A former privateer in the service of the Colombian government, Gilbert began raiding American merchant vessels off the east coast of Florida in early 1832. Later that year, his men stole roughly $20,000 worth of silver from the Mexican, en route from Salem to Rio de Janeiro. The crew surrendered, but on Gilbert's orders his men locked them below deck and left them to burn alive. The captain managed to free himself and his men who eventually reached Salem. The British Navy captured Gilbert's ship and crew in 1833 and all thirteen were convicted and hanged in Boston in 1834. Some spotting. Good copy.

Small 8vo in 12s (15 x 10 cm). Modern red sheepskin, glazed, each board with a gold and blind-stamped border, spine title in gold.

Anuario de estudios Bolivianos, 13 (2005), p. 680; Parke-Bernet 12 March 1968 (Carbone auction), lot 2664 (this copy); cf. A. Costa de la Torre, Cat. bibl. Bolivianos 1900-1963 (1968), p. 37; not in KVK & WorldCat; Medina; Palau. An extremely rare "Novena" prayer book perhaps first compiled in 1714, when the city of La Paz in Bolivia (after surviving an earthquake) made Christ its patron and erected an image under the name "Señor de las Piedades". After a preliminary note on the events of 1714 (pp. 3-4) the book gives orations and prayers for each of the nine days of the Novena. We have located neither another copy of the present Argentine edition nor an earlier edition of the same text, but the title-page indicates that an earlier edition existed. The prayers for the nine days are followed by a closing note with additional prayers, which includes a reference to another book: Juan Gabriel de Contreras, Despertador eucarístico, Madrid, 1786, which is known in the literature. The italic type used for the preliminary note and a few headings was cut by Antonio Espinosa in Madrid, famous for the (slightly different) italic he made for Ibarra's 1772 Salust. Updike, Printing types, figs. 242 and 243, shows italics matching the present one in style but in a larger and smaller size in Espinosa's 1771 type specimen, noting (p. 81) the "extraordinary quality of pen-work. ... they are among the most thoroughly calligraphic characters to be found in any existing specimen". The use of this type in Argentina 28 years later is noteworthy. With the bookplate and stamp of Oscar E. Carbone (d. ca. 1967). The binder has trimmed the margins, just touching the text on 1 page, but without loss, and there is a stain on the title-page, but the book is in very good condition. The binding has some tears and chips to the spine and corners, but is still good. An extremely rare Argentine edition of a Bolivian prayerbook.

Nature's selfprinting[:] a series of useful and ornamental plants of the South Indian flora[.] Taken from fresh specimens in facsimile colours. Mangalore, "Botanographed and published by J. Hunziker, Basel Mission Press", 1862 (binding label: printed and published for V. P. Coelho esquire, etc.). Imperial 4to (42 x 33 cm). With 3 colour-printed preliminary leaves, and 231 nature-printed plates in several colours, printed by an experimental process transferring the image to a litho stone. Publisher's original gold-tooled green half morocco.

Cf. Barker, Treasures of the British Library (2005), p. 203 (1862 Hunziker: "a marvelous example of nature printing"); Madhyastha et al., "A brief history of scientific technology, ... of South Kanara, Karnataka State", in: Indian journal of history of science, 17 (1982), pp. 260-267, at p. 264 (1862 Hunziker); WorldCat & KVK (1 copy of 1861 Coelho with 114 plates & 4 copies of 1862 Hunziker, some probably with 474 plates but incl. 1 with only 31 plates); not in Blunt, Art of botanical illustration; DiNoto & Winter, The pressed plant: the art of botanical specimens, nature prints, ...; Fischer, Zweihundert Jahre Naturselbstdruck; Kew Library on-line catalogue. Extremely rare set of 231 colour nature prints (no other copy known in the present form) printed using an experimental process by the Basel Mission Press at Mangalore on the west coast of India for the local timber merchant Venantius Peter Coelho (1813-post 1862). What appears to be the first book printed in this way appeared under Coelho's name, A small collection of Indian plants, ... printed from fresh plants, Mangalore, German Mission Press, 1861. We have located only the British Library copy, which has 114 plates. One year later, in 1862, the Swiss missionary John James Hunziker issued the present title in two volumes, said to include 474 plates, probably including the 114 that had already been issued by Coelho. The present set of 231 plates has three preliminary leaves from the 1862 edition, including the title-page of the second volume with "part II" struck through, and the plates are probably from that edition (and Coelho's book) as well. The plates show not only leaves and stems, but often roots and sometimes flowers, fruits and even thick stems (such as sugar cane). Among the plants included is Cannabis sativa. One plate is printed on a different paper with a reddish cast, and it has several tears and lacks a corner. Another plate is torn through the middle. About five plates show creases that were in the paper before printing. Most are in good condition, however, though some are slightly loose and one detached. The binding is also somewhat loose and slightly worn, but still generally good.

        Geryon's Country

[Leonia, NJ]. 2005. One of 25 artist's books in form of tunnel , each containing a three- dimensional accordion-file bucolic scene of Geryon's red cattle, as well as three stand-alone cut-out figures, one of Geryon himself, with legs, arms, and wings grommeted so all 6 legs and arms and 2 wings move, and he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd and his red dog, jaws grommeted so that he can bear his teeth or not, and one figure of Geryon WITHOUT wings but with his six arms and legs gromted so that he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd. The artist's statement is Gocco- printed and color penciled onto digital color supreme glossy recycled Arches text wove paper and appears on each side of the "tunnel.". The figure is handcut and assembled from Fabriano Tiziano lava red paper. The text on the left side of the panorama recounts one of Hercules' twelve labors - the stealing of Geryon's cows - during which Hercules kills the six-armed, six-legged giant. The text on the right side of the panorama refers to an alternate version of the mythy, citing Anne Carson's AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RED in which she portrays a far more vulnerable Geryon, who had a red dog that was also killed by Hercules during his theft. The artist captions her panorama without words "Believe what you will." Another two-sided story - provocatively and beautifully told through visualization. Size: 5-3/8 inches x 9 inches opening to 4 inches; colophon on back of panorama within foldout case that also houses cut-out figure, the whole book housed in custom-made printed gold and red cloth case, lined with red silk, fastened with white buttons, fine.

The Duino Elegies (Signed Limited Edition with 11 Signed Silver Gelatin Prints)

South Dennis, Massachusetts: 21st Editions , 2005. Limited Edition . Hardcover. As New. In 2005, fine press photography book publisher 21st Editions released The Duino Elegies. Limited to 60 copies worldwide, the hand-bound collection contains 11 original silver gelatin prints (ten bound and one free-standing silver gelatin print that is suitable for framing). Each print is fully signed by Josephine Sacabo with the free standing photograph also signed in full on the rectro. This copy, 4 of 60, was presented to Lance Speer (21st Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing) upon completion of the project. While Josephine Sacabos photographs are often visually and psychologically calming, they also resonate with energy. The viewer is continually seduced by her warm tones and elegant figures yet becomes caught up in the pathos just under the surface. These photographs were directly inspired by her passion for Rilkes Duino Elegies. Rilke, a Symbolist like Sacabo, was the finest poet writing in German in the 20th Century, and The Duino Elegies was his masterpiece. This translation by the great Welsh poet Leslie Norris and the noted German scholar Alan Keele renders Rilkes complex and often poorly translated work back into the moving poetry that it is. Each signed and numbered copy of The Duino Elegies is hand-bound and printed in letterpress on handmade cotton rag paper. This gorgeous handmade volume is housed in a custom clamshell box. The book measures 16 x 13.5 inches with each of the 11 fully signed silver gelatin prints measuring approximately 9 x 11 inches. The free-standing silver gelatin print is housed in a folded, letterpress printed presentation folder. The book is signed by Josephine Sacabo, John Wood, the translators Leslie Norris and Alan Keele, and publisher Steven Albahari. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer is included. The book, prints, and case are all in PRISTINE condition.

Autograph musical manuscript of "Say Thou Dost Love Me. Sonnets from the Portuguese XXI," a work for unaccompanied voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), signed and dated Ithaca, 21 January 2012. [Subtitle]: Written "For the 25th anniversary of The New York Virtuoso Singers, Harold Rosenbaum, Artistic Director" and dedicated to Mimi Stillman

6 ff. Large oblong folio (375 x 292 mm.). Notated in pencil on one side of each leaf only on 14-stave Carta No. 25 music manuscript paper. With text by Elizabeth Barrett Browning commencing "Say over, say over, say over again, and yet once over again, that thou dost love me." . Stucky, a major figure on the contemporary American music scene, is one of the most highly regarded and frequently performed living composers. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his Second Concerto for Orchestra in 2005 and has written commissioned works for many of the major American orchestras. Long associated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he was resident composer from 1988-2009, Stucky studied with Karel Husa at Cornell and has been a professor of composition there since 1980. "Stucky&#39;s style combines rigorous compositional techniques with direct, eloquent expression. This mixture results in colourful, variegated and attractive musical structures that exhibit clear formal patterns and carefully organized pitch arrangements. The influence of Bartók and Lutoslawski lends an Eastern European character to works such as Voyages (1984) and the Double Concerto (1985). Several other works (Boston Fancies, 1985; Concerto for Orchestra, 1986&#150;7; Son et lumière, 1988) refer to Stravinsky in their juxtaposition of blocks of material. In later works, Stucky&#146;s harmonic language develops from atonal aggregates like those of Berio and Lutoslawski towards harmonic complexes that allude to triadic structures." James P. Cassaro in Grove online Browning (1806-1861) was one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era. Her acclaimed "Sonnets from the Portuguese," a collection of 44 love sonnets written just prior to her marriage to Robert Browning in 1846, were first published in 1850.

        The Mappist

San Francisco, CA: Pacific Editions, 2005 San Francisco, CA: Pacific Editions. 2005. First Edition thus, one of 48 copies, all on BFK Rives paper, signed by the author, Barry Lopez, and the artist / designer / publisher, Charles Hobson, in pencil and numbered by Hobson. Page size: 11 inches x 12 inches. Bound: with original USGS maps for the concertina binding, which, when opened, creates its own vista of mountains and valleys representing the maps that figure so prominently in the Lopez story, covers made of paper over boards, paper reproducing a 1911 map of Bogotá from the collection of the Library of Congress, publisher's slipcase of wood- grained paper over boards with brass-toned metal label holder attached to spine of box holding white paper label with title and author in black, all suggesting a map cabinet which plays a pivotal role in Lopez's story, further housed in tan corrugated paper board slipcase, slipcase and board covers made by John DeMerrit with the assistance of Kris Langan, new. The book opens with images of hands emulating gestures of a map maker at work reproduced as digital pigment prints on transparent film. The book also contains landscape images and an image of pencils from the writing desk of Barry Lopez printed as digital pigment prints from monotypes with pastel all created by Charles Hobson. The text has been printed letterpress by Les Ferriss in Garamond Narrow type. The book and images were created by Charles Hobson who assembled the book with the assistance of Alice Shaw. Barry Lopez's THE MAPPIST was originally published in 2000 in LIGHT ACTION IN THE CARIBBEAN. It is a multi-layered story perfectly embodied by Charles Hobson's book. Themes of hidden identities searched out and deciphered, hidden intentions coded in seemingly disparate actions, and the tantalizing possibilities of bringing order to a chaotic history are beautifully served by the combination of maps that are the subject of the story and, literally, hold the story together. The story itself is certainly one of the wittiest "legends" ever devised for its surrounding map. The reader is challenged with images thrown up by the author and artist: bits of map interspersing text, bits of map as foredge and gutter outside edge on any turn of the page, a phrase full of possibilities "he was a patriot" and suggestions in the form of queries: was Lewis Mumford a populist? When "The Mappist" gives the narrator a copy of his very rare book, THE CITY OF GERANIUMS, the reader is doubly seduced with this act of generosity (or is it instinct to preserve one's values) for the words are preceded and followed by a page of transparent film with the image of a map being passed from one hand to another. Turning the film page, the reader is confronted with the act being completed and the hand off accomplished. The narrator finishes his tale with a ride down a very dark gravel road, using the sound of the tires on the crushed stone as his "map." We are left wondering where will we find our maps - and will we be able to read them - or remember what we've read. Pacific Editions' THE MAPPIST will certainly help in this ongoing quest. See an Image.

        Doubling Back

[New York, 2005]. [New York. 2005]. One of 20 copies, all on Fabriano Tiepolo paper, signed and numbered by the artist / author on the colophon. Page size: 14-3/4 inches x 11 inches; 9 leaves each containing an original poem printed letterpress at The Grenfell Press on an original aquatint printed by Peter Pettengill in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, plus titlepage with original aquatint, plus colophon page. Bound: loose as issued in cloth clamshell box by Claudia Cohen. The aquatints are in grays and blues, greens and tans, always with subtle shadings, full of texture and often three dimensional in feel. The color and texture work as one to form a frame (and what splendid frames they are) for the words, focusing the reader&#39;s eye to the text. The verses are not long, but they do stick. "VISITS - visited / you bent a smile into the mouth / the same smile / muscles in place / forced as a stick that opens / the teeth." <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/9645.jpg >Image.</A><br>

THE STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES - THE FIRST EDITION WITH INTERVIEW CD + "2001" FILMSTRIP

Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2005. (KUBRICK, STANLEY). Castle, Alison, Jan Harlan & Christiane Kubrick. Alison Castle, Editor. THE STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES - THE FIRST EDITION WITH INTERVIEW CD + "2001" FILMSTRIP. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2005. First Edition. Oblong Folio. Debossed Boards. Film Monograph. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 544pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. With an Audio CD. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The making of this book has been something of an odyssey: two years of traveling through time and space to the heart of Stanley Kubrick&#39;s universe, where I not only had the unprecedented privilege of having access to his archives, but also the invaluable guidance of those who were closest to him. Endeavoring to uncover each and every artifact that could cast light upon Kubrick&#39;s creative process, I scoured the archives, gathering the most illuminating items, from bits of paper covered with hurriedly scribbled notes to photographs taken by Kubrick on the sets of his films. Hunched over hundreds upon hundreds of contact sheets with my loupe, I was able to select images that had never been printed before, let alone seen; rifling through screenplay drafts I found references to scenes that were never filmed, and among the photos I found images of sequences that were abandoned; reading Kubrick&#39;s notes and letters, I discovered not only clues to his thought processes but also his curious love affair with various types of stationery, typewriters, and pens. Searching through the often chaotic mountains of material was an exhilarating experience: each and every "discovery" was like a minor miracle, a defining moment, an epiphany. Part two of this book features the result of this gleaning: an eclectic collection of material that represents the nuts and bolts of Kubrick&#39;s creative history. To help guide readers through the expedition is a selection of articles and essays by noted Kubrick scholars as well as a generous selection of material "from the horse&#39;s mouth" (i.e. Kubrick letters, essays, and interviews), refuting the popular misconception that Kubrick was a recluse who didn&#39;t or wouldn&#39;t talk about his work". This is Taschen&#39;s lavishly illustrated history of Kubrick&#39;s oeuvre from "Fear and Desire" through "Eyes Wide Shut" - the most comprehensive survey of the late, great director&#39;s work to date. A handsome copy of the lavish, oversized 2005 first printing complete with audio CD and twelve frame filmstrip snipped from Kubrick&#39;s own 70mm print of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (that appears only in this edition) showing just a bit of wear along the foredge of the textblock.
