Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 2005. THE ART OF FALCONRY BY FREDERICK II * Limited Facsimile Edition * Manuscript Pal. Lat. 1071 Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Vatican City, State of the Vatican City) * Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Commentary: 1 volume (ADEVA 1973) * Mint copy

Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 2005. THE BOOK OF EMPEROR FREDERICK II FALK - De arte venandi cum avibus * * * The Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250) was called not by chance "stupor mundi" (amazement of the world): He was curious beyond all measures, spoke many languages fluently, was open-minded against other religions and way ahead of his time. One of his greatest passions was falconry. As he considered all the textbooks about it as insufficient, he wrote down thirty years of his own experiences and created the leading standard work for centuries himself: De arte venandi cum avibus. * * * This edition here from the 13th Century is known for its rich illustration and therefor is probably the most beautiful copy of this masterpiece. The book was decorated with more than 1,000 illustrations and demonstrates the fascination of this royal sport. Today the manuscript is kept as ms. pal. Latin 1071 in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. * * * Title: The Art of Falconry by Frederick II * Owner / Shelf mark: Pal. Lat. 1071 Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Vatican City, State of the Vatican City) * Alternative Titles: De arte venandi cum avibus * Arte de cetreria de Federico II * Die Kunst, mit Vögel zu jagen * Falkenbuch Friedrichs II. * Theme: Hunting book * Style: Gothic * Date: 2nd half of the 13th century * Origin: Probably Naples (Italy) * Format: 36 × 24.5 cm * Extent: 220 pages * Language: Latin * Content: Treatise on hunting with birds of prey and a zoology of birds * Artists / Schools: Frederick II von Hohenstaufen (1194-1250), a passionate hunter and especially interested in falconry and the natural sciences spent more than 30 years gathering information and experiences to write this master work of the Western art of falconry * Illustrations: This 2-column 111 folio parchment manuscript is the most famous and best known of all the works of Frederick II because of its incredibly beautiful illustrations: 170 human figures, more than 900 species of birds, 12 horses and 36 other animals plus all the paraphenalia needed for falconry * Patron: Emperor Frederick II and his son Manfred * Former Owners / Provenance: After Frederic's Son Manfred 's death (1266), the manuscript passed to Jean II de Dampierre, among whose possessions it is recorded in 1300. Around 1594, it was owned by the Nuremberg doctor Joachim Camerarius the Younger (t 1598). The Whole Edited, Verified, Introduced and Commented by Aleister Crowley. The text is a facsimile of Crowley's personal copies of the 1904 first edition (Boleskine: Society for the Propigation of Religious Truth, 1904) reproducing the substantial annotations therein. These commence with three pages carrying Gerald Yorke's notes. The Preliminary Invocation or Bornless ritual is given twice. The first reproduces the text from Crowley's vellum bound copy, the second presents the text from Crowley's camel hair bound copy which has a different set of annotations. These will be important for anyone studing the genesis of Liber Samekh. The Introduction has two additional annotated footnotes by Crowley. The text of the Goetia itself, has seven illustrations of Goetic demons by Crowley, plus some additional annotations. There is then a two page list in the hand of Gerald Yorke giving the appearance of the demons from the Bagh-I-Muattar plus Crowley's sources for that material. Finally there are three pages of Enochian Calls in the hand of Leah Hirsig plus a pages reproducing talismans from Crowley's Temple of L.I.L. in Mexico. Crowley's annotations reveal potent A.A. & OTO magickal formulae, which later were given form in the instructions of "Liber Sameckh" & "Liber Pyramidos", and which shed much light on Crowley's later sex magick practices. ¶¶ [Along with] MANUSCRIPT OF THE GRIMOIRE OF POPE HONORIUS. Colour reproduction of nineteenth century Grimoire or Book of Spells of Pope Honorius, once in the personal collection of Frederick George Irwin - a prominent fringe freemason and member of the 'Society of Eight' precursor to the Societas Rosicruciana In Anglia and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Irwin was an associate of Hockley who appears to have had this English language translation prepared from French originals of Honorius and the 'Collection of the Secrets of the Magic Art' of one Guidon, which draws heavily upon the Grimorium Verum and the 'Pacts'.

Includes a specimen leaf on paper from each of the six Presses: Kelmscott, Ashendene, Doves, Eragny, Vale and Essex House. Also includes additional specimen leaves showing other typefaces used by the Presses. The first purely leaf book to be published by the Whittington Press, this book is designed to give collectors the feel of the actual pages from these great Presses in a way that no reproduction can achieve. The collection represents the superb work of the founding figures of the Private Press movement: William Morris, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, St John Hornby, Charles Ricketts, Lucien Pissarro and C.R. Ashbee. The leaves demonstrate clearly the quality of the work of each Press, showing to their best advantage the type design, layout, exact format, quality of inking and impression, and often examples of initials and decorative devices. David Butcher's commentary about each Press concentrates in particular on the books from which the specimen leaves are taken. Printed on Czech Losin hand-made paper. Title page and chapter titles printed in red and black.
