Yarmouth, ME:: Allison Cooke Brown,, 2005.. Edition of 6. 3.75 x 4 x 5.5" paste paper covered box ("Whitman's Sampler" design) holding 36 vintage glassine envelopes each containing a word hand cross stitched on cloth with red cotton thread. Each word is a definition of "hold". Cross stitched label on paper. Paper covered interior walls. Box construction by Scott Mullenberg. Allison Cooke Brown: "Looking at the glassine envelopes holding my father's boxed collection of categorized postage stamps caused me to think about the many words that can mean 'containment'. I found 36 different definitions, cross stitched them in the old sampler style and put each in one of his envelopes. Each has its own distinct connotation to me or the reader, but combining two of them yields some surprising or disturbing results such as embrace/protect or believe/control."

        GRAND HOTEL ET DES PALMES

Santa Cruz, California:: Foolscap Press,, 2005.. Editon of 120. 9 x 11.25" bound in quarter goat skin leather and housed in a custom made box. Printed letterpress on Hahnemühle Bugra. The direct-gravure etchings are printed on 300 gram Pescia. In this unusual binding "half pages" are opened revealing an etching in nearly every section of the book. The edition is limited to 120 numbered copies plus eight printer's proofs numbered i-viii. Signed in the colophon by both the translator and artist. Written by the poet, Cyrano who was, indeed, a brave soldier . He was wounded in battle twice, and was an excellent swordsman. But, most important, he left behind a work that influenced many writers who followed. Cyrano was an satirist, a man ahead of his time who dared to challenge the orthodoxies of both contemporary astronomy and the Church. This work is translated by Geoffrey Strachan who won the Scott Moncrieff Prize for his translation of Makine's Le Testament Français. In his informative introduction of Journey to the Moon he speaks of "pataphysics," a term used by Alfred Jarry meaning the science of imaginary solutions. Mr. Strachan states, "If ever there was a classic example of pataphysics in action it is surely Cyrano's decision to resolve his contemporaries' disputes about the nature of the moon by penning an imaginary flight there — in order, as it were, to see for himself: a perfect marriage between empirical method and poetic imagination."

On Governors" in Proceedings of the Royal Society 16, 1868, pp. 270-283

      - FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT PAPER ON FEED-BACK MECHANISMS," ONE "USUALLY QUOTED AS THE FOUNDING PAPER OF THE SUBJECT OF CYBERNETICS" (Flood, James Clerk Maxwell, 56). In an experiment "to establish a standard for electrical resistance, James had used a governor to keep the coil spinning at a constant rate. This had turned his thoughts to the way governors worked. In a steam engine governor, weights on a driven shaft are linked to a valve controlling the steam input. The further the weights fly out under centrifugal force, the smaller the valve opening becomes. If the engine starts to speed up the steam input is reduced, causing it to slow again; so the engine settles down to a controlled steady speed. James saw that the same principle could be applied to give precise and stable control of any kind of machine" (ibid). "The key idea was negative feedback. To control the machine's output to a desired value (which may vary over time), you continuously compare the actual output against the required output, and feed the difference back to the input in such a way as to make the output converge on the wanted value. James worked out the conditions for stability under various feedback arrangements, and examined the effects of damping and of changes in the driven load. He wrote up the results [in this paper]. It was the first mathematical analysis of control systems and became the foundation of modern control theory" (ibid). "In coining the term "cybernetics" to describe the field of control and communication/information theory, Wiener was paying homage toMaxwell's paper, as the English word "governor" -- the familiar term for the first popular feedback device -- derives from the Latin corruption of the Greek kubernetes. The word means "steersman"; the steering engines of a ship are among the earliest and best developed forms of feedback mechanism" (Christies, Origins of Cyberspace Auction, 2005). CONDITION & DETAILS: Complete. Ex-libris bearing no exterior markings whatsoever; 4 discreet interior stamps (one on title page, one on the table of contents, one on the subscriber's index, one on the last page of the index). 4to (Quarto). 10 x 7 inches (250 x 175mm).         The Hours of Joanna I of Castile, Joanna the Mad

2005. FLEMISH BOOK OF HOURS. The Hours of Joanna I of Castile, Joanna the Mad. 237 ff. Illustrated with illustrations plus 75 full-page illuminations. 8vo., 240 x 165 mm, bound in publisher's full crushed brown morocco, gilt-tooled floral borders on covers, red leather title-labels on spine. Preserved in matching brown morocco slipcase. Barcelona: Moleiro, 2005. An impressive facsimile from British Museum Add. Ms. 35313. The illuminations in this exceptional Book of Hours are the work of Ghent artist Gerard Horenbout (ca. 1465-1541), the leading Flemish illuminator of the sixteenth century, and Sanders Bening and his atelier, who painted most of the miniatures of the Suffrages of the Saints. The miniatures are characterised by three-dimensional realism and great sophistication, particularly those illustrating the Passion cycle. The faces are seen charged with emotion; the liveliness and realism of the illuminated scenes result in a Book of Hours that remains one of the most impressive artistic works by the Flemish artist. The lavishness of the manuscript suggests that it was commissioned by a monarch. The references to St John the Baptist, St. Ildephonsus and St. Isidore indicate that it was likely a member of the Spanish royalty: for instance, Joanna the Mad, Queen of Castile. Accompanied by a 430 page trade edition by Moliero offering commentary, iconographical explanations of the miniatures, the decorative borders, a bibliography, etc., edited and written by Carlos Miranda Garcia-Tejedor. Limited to 987 numbered copies, this being copy # 347. Originally published at $ 11,560.00.

The Quantum Theory of Optical Coherence" in Physical Review 130, No. 6, June 15, 1963, pp. 2529-2539

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF GLAUBER'S NOBLE PRIZE WINNING QUANTUM THEORY OF OPTICAL COHERENCE, the quantum mechanical basis of different types of light. Glauber's seminal theory, at first controversial but now widely used in the field of quantum optics, differentiates between laser (coherent) light and normal (blackbody) light. Arguing that photon correlation experiments must be based on a consistent application of quantum electrodynamics, Glauber showed how the quantum theory has to be formulated in order to describe the detection process. "This also served to bring out the distinction between the behaviour of thermal light sources and presently common coherent sources such as lasers and quantum amplifiers. "[Glauber's] theory uses the formalism of quantum electrodynamics to describe the absorption of a photon in a detector. By correlating several such detectors, [Glauber showed how] one may obtain higher order correlations, which [then] display clearly the characteristic features of quantum radiation" (Nobel Prize Website). Glauber's work formed the basis for the development of Quantum Optics when it was written and still does to this day. Glauber was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in optical coherence in 2005. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society, Volume 130, No. 6, June 15, 1963. Original Wraps 4to (10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm).         Geryon's Country

Leonia, New Jersey:: Lois Morrison,, 2005.. Edition of 25. 9 x 5.5" tunnel book with envelope fold attached to contain "paper doll" of Geryon. Color-copied from rayon drawings. Gocco-printed and color penciled onto digital color supreme glossy recycled Arches text wove and Fabriano Tiziano lava red. Typeface is Font Lister: Font Book #68. Handcut, grommetted and assembled. Wrapped in lined cloth with button closures. Embroidered runes on the cloth wrap. Text by Morrison on exterior accordion sides of the tunnel book. In Greek Mythology Hercules had to perform twelve Labors for penance of the murder of his wife and children. The tenth of these Labors was to steal the cattle of Geryon from an island called Erythia, which was near the boundary of Europe and Libya. In the execution of this theft Hercules killed Geryon and the two headed dog who guarded them.Geryon is described has being red, incredibly strong with six arms and legs. While Geryon may not have been the most attractive fellow he was after all protecting his property. Few remember that in the execution of his labors Hercules actually committed a series of crimes. At the beginning of the "Autobiography of Red," Anne Carson translates fragments of Stesichoros' "Geryoneis" that show Geryon as far more vulnerable and gives him a red dog that Hercules clubs to death. Stesichoros also gives Geryon a pair of wings and has Hercules split his skull with a single arrow. Thus, he dies protecting his mythical herd of red cattle from the Hercules. Carson recasts the Geryon Labor as a contemporary homosexual love affair. IIn Morrison's representation two Geryons share the pocket on the back of the tunnel book along with a red dog. These 'paper' Geryons can be placed in the tunnel book among the cattle. As one manipulates the Geryons and "reads" the story of the Labor, Morrison charges the reader to "Believe what you will.
