Münchner Landschaft mit Gespensterschlößl oder Rockerl (später Maigarten).

      - Sepia-Pinsel über Bleistift, auf Bütten. 17,9:21,9 cm.

        The Curse of Lono

Berlin: Taschen 2005. Hunter S. Thompson's most eccentric book in a new, limited edition The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: the crazy tales of a Journalist's "coverage" of a news event that ends up being a wild ride to the dark side of Americana. Originally published in 1983, Curse features all of the zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson / Ralph Steadman duo have become known and loved.         VARIATIONS on the Dialectic between Mingus and Pithecanthropus Erectus.

Wheaton, MD:: Lynn Sures,, 2005.. Edition of 55. 10.5 x 7.5 x.5" (27cm.x19cm.x1.5cm) closed and opens to 58.5" (148 cm). An accordion book with 16 pages of abaca, pulp-painted paper. Eight consecutive pages are printed with woodcuts and polymer-plate text, eight are printed with woodcuts alone. Three pamphlets of abaca and hemp papers are sewn into the accordion; each contains two polymer-plate images and one essay, plus a watermark image. The title and colophon are printed on the front and back of the wrapper, which is a single folded sheet of abaca paper with a woodcut and polymer-plate text. All text and images are letterpress printed, all paper is handmade. Lynn Sures designed the book; drew and carved woodblocks from basswood (Japanese shina) panels. The paper, pulp paintings & watermarks were made at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, of Silver Spring, Maryland. Sures then bound the edition with assistance from Maria Burke & Jill Christian. Lynn also worked on the text design with Terrence Chouinard and designed the wrapper with assistance from Shawn Sheehy. Harold Kyle produced the photopolymer plates at his Boxcar Press of Syracuse, New York. Terrence Chouinard of the Wing & the Wheel Press, Locke, New York, was the printer. Variations began in 2000 and was completed in 2005. Inspiration for this book is the musical work entitled "Pithecanthropus Erectus" written and performed by twentieth-century musician Charles Mingus. Mingus speaks in the album liner notes about the stages of evolutionary development and the self-awareness of humans. Book artist Lynn Sures and paleoanthropologist Rick Potts use images and words to weave Mingus' musical tale together with the poignant factual story of early hominid P. erectus. The dialectic between Mingus and P. erectus addresses fragility, the power of creation, the hand played by chance, and the blank slate of the future.

With: (2) FLOURENS, Pierre, [Louis-Isidore?] DUPERREY and Etienne SERRES. Rapport sur les races nègres de l'Afrique Orientale au sud de l'équateur, observées par M. de Froberville.(Colophon: Paris, printed by Bachelier, [1850]). Offprint, with its own pagination, from Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des Sciences , XXX (1850).2 works in 1 volume. Small folio & large 8vo. 19th-century black half morocco, with the blue paper back wrapper of the second offprint bound in.

Ad 1: WorldCat (1 copy, as issued in the proceedings); ad 2: Cohen, French encounter with Africans, p. 242 & note 86 on pp. 340-341; for De Froberville's work in Mauritius: Vaughan, Creating the Creole Island: slavery in eighteenth-century Mauritius (2005), p. 267. Two offprints discussing the researches of the French ethnographer Eugène de Froberville (1790-1871) in Mauritius on the languages and races of sub-equatorial East African, the first one published in Mauritius. The first is especially interesting, because it is an account of a lecture De Froberville gave at the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Mauritius, apparently on 8 February 1844, and his lecture does not appear to have been published on its own. The present account, comprising primarily long quotations from De Froberville's lecture (including an 11-page comparative table of East African languages), may therefore be the best record of his lecture.Bound before the offprints is a signed autograph letter from De Froberville, written in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 7 August 1846. It does not name the person he is addressing, but it seems likely to have been sent to Louis Bouton concerning his publication of De Froberville's lecture. A signed autograph note by Bouton on the first page of the 1846 offprint identifies him as the author of the parts that are not directly quoted from De Froberville. With the second offprint foxed, but both otherwise in very good condition. A rare record of early French research into East African languages.

        Mayflies of the Driftless Region

Wisconsin: Midnight Paper Sales, 2005. One of 300 copies. 14 color wood engravings (13 specimen plates plus a microscope) by Gaylord Schanilec. 13 entomological identifications of specimens by Dr. Clarke Gary. Hand-set in Bembo monotype. Printed on Zerkal mould-made paper. Bound in quarter leather by Gregor Campbell with handmade paper by Mary Hark. Issued in a slipcase. Mint. A study of mayflies by an artist: "I began this project with little practical knowledge of mayfly entomology. It was not the information in Halford's Dry Fly Entomology that caught my attention, but rather the detailed wood engravings that illustrated it. While Mayflies of the Driftless Region may provide useful information for fishermen and women of similar naïveté, the essence of the book is art. I have created 13 depictions of mayflies, color wood engravings with each hue printed from a separate block of end-grain maple. These images are the result of careful microscopic study of specimens collected from streams near my home in rural Wisconsin.

London, England: Phaidon Press, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. London, England: Phaidon Press, 2005. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 288 pages. Massive retrospective collection of photographs. The single most complete and valuable book on the photographic art of Mary Ellen Mark. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Phaidon Press and Mary Shanahan: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 6 pounds. Pristine-white hard boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs and Afterword by Mary Ellen Mark. Essay, "Family Ties", by Weston Naef, Curator of The Photography Department, Getty Museum Los Angeles. Chronology appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pristine-white DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published in 2005 to celebrate Mary Ellen Mark's 40th Anniversary Year as a photographer. Presents, in a beautiful edition, the most comprehensive retrospective of Mary Ellen Mark's life-work. She made her first pictures in Turkey on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1960. Her photographs in the 1970's of Bombay brothels were published as "Falkland Road", a masterpiece and (together with "Ward 81"), the collection confirmed her stature as one of the most provocative documentary photographers of our time. "Mark's pictures are a celebration of humanity in its most diverse and eccentric forms. Circuses, gypsy camps, children yearning for adulthood, the poor and destitute are some of her recurring themes. Mark has the unique ability to capture gestures and expressions that translate the intense emotions of her subjects. Compassionate but never literal, her pictures can be humorous, tragic, enigmatic, shocking, and often, all of these simultaneously. Mark's images provide intimate insights into the lives of others, presenting compelling stories of human strength and suffering" (Winston Naef). Apart from the iconic images of the title, Mary Ellen Mark has included a generous selection of photographs that appear in book form for the very first time. Mary Ellen Mark died on May 25, 2015, Memorial Day, at the age of 75, an irreplaceable loss. A stunningly beautiful book. An absolute "must-have" title for Mary Ellen Mark collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the half-title page by Mary Ellen Mark. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 118 duotone, 17 color plates. Voted by American Photo Magazine as the most important and most influential female photographer of all time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARY ELLEN MARK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0714844047.

        KIKUJI KAWADA: THE MAP (CHIZU)

(KAWADA, KIKUJI). Kawada, Kikuji. KIKUJI KAWADA: THE MAP (CHIZU). Tucson, AZ & Tokyo: Nazraeli Press & Getsuyosha Ltd., 2005. First Edition Thus 1/500. 8vo. Cloth in Pictorial Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Japanese and English. With a chronology. "Originally published on August 6, 1965 - the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima - Kikuji Kawada's "The Map (Chizu)" is a true icon in the history of photographic publishing. Its status as the "ultimate photobook-as-object", coupled with its scarcity, combined to make it one of the most famous and sought-after photographic publications in existence. "The Map" combines powerful graphic design with a masterful photographic narrative exploring recent Japanese history - its imperialist past, western-influenced popular culture, and brutally violent clash with the United States. The photographs, many visible only with the opening of the multiple double-page gatefolds, capture on high-contrast film scenes of places and objects seared with the memory of horrific wartime events, from the atomic-bomb dome in Hiroshima to a trampled Japanese flag. Nazraeli Press in association with Getsuyosha Ltd. is proud to announce a facsimile reprint of this historic book. This edition is limited to only five hundred copies for distribution in the United States and Europe. Each copy is hand-numbered and signed by the artist, who also oversaw production of the project". A brand new, pristine example of the uncommon 2005 Nazraeli Press edition (whose 1965 Bijutsu Shuppan-sha first edition is cited on pages 286-287 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 212-213 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 86-93 of Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian's "Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and '70s") NUMBERED AND SIGNED by Kikuji Kawada still in the publisher's shrinkwrap.         Of Woodland Pools, Spring-Holes & Ditches

Petersham, Massachusetts: Lone Oak Press, 2005. Rorer, Abigail. Oblong quarto. 89pp. Of a total edition of fourteen deluxe copies and 70 standard copies, this is one of five deluxe copies chosen to be specially bound for the international traveling exhibit "InsideOUT: Contemporary Bindings of Private Press Books," and as such, it does not include the extra suite or block as listed in the colophon. The exhibit, organized by British binding society Designer Bookbinders, married the works of nine private presses with the artistry of 59 binders from the United Kingdom and the United States. The text consists of selections from Henry David Thoreau's journal, which describe the vernal pools of New England that serve as breeding habitats for all manner of amphibians. Accompanying the text are twenty-eight engravings by Lone Oak Press founder Abigail Rorer, some of which are hand-colored by the artist. The detailed drawings brilliantly capture the teeming life and varied textures of these small pools. The book was designed by Michael Russem of the Kat Ran Press and includes an introduction by Thoreau scholar Bradley P. Dean. The designer binding, specially commissioned for the exhibit, is by Mark Esser. Esser developed the curriculum and was the first instructor for the hand bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and now works as a private binder in Massachusetts. This binding is full brown goatskin with leather onlays and gold and blind tooling, top edge gilt. On the cover, green reeds enter a rippling pool and are cleverly refracted beneath the water's surface. A repeating yellow leaf design frames the image, continuing inside onto the green goatskin doublures. Opposite, the marbled paper flyleaves are reminiscent of stones and pebbles. Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box. As a whole, Esser's work evokes the deep peace found in nature, and of the surprises that lurk just below the surface. Extremely fine.
