The Arrest of Christ].[Flanders (Bruges?), or Nürnberg, ca. 1520]. Miniature painted on vellum (7.8 x 5.6 cm) in numerous colours, highlighted with gold and in a gold border, probably from a book of hours, but with no text.

      - For the general style: U. Merkl, Buchmalerei in Bayern in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts (1999). A finely rendered miniature showing great detail in bright colours, highlighted with gold, depicting the Arrest of Christ, most likely from a diminutive book of hours. Surrounded by a bustling throng of Roman soldiers carrying spears and wearing halberds, Christ appears calm just at the moment when a soldier takes him captive. An elder of the Jewish Temple stands directly behind him, dressed in red. To the right stands Simon Peter, sword raised, having cut off the ear of the High Priest's servant, Malchus, who sits nursing his bleeding ear in the lower left corner of the composition. An earlier episode, Christ's Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he learns that one of his disciples will betray him, appears in the background at left. A genre scene, with men working the fields and crossing a river on a narrow plank bridge, occupies the middle ground to the left of the main scene, and the towers of a castle or city the middle ground to the right. The general style recalls the art of the last generation of Ghent-Bruges painters, especially that of the famed Simon Bening. Though the anonymous artist owes much of his style to Bening's model, he was most likely German. The acidic palette, bright yellow juxtaposed with blue and lime green, and the facial types (remarkably expressive, even at this tiny scale) recall Nürnberg painters in the circle of Glockendon. It is worth remembering that Bening himself collaborated with several Nürnberg painters whose presence in Flanders is thus confirmed. With some fine superficial cracks and an occasional tiny abrasion (mostly near the edges), but generally in good condition. A lovely miniature of Christ's arrest, rendered in remarkably fine detail.

        Vertigo (SIGNED)

London: Harvill Press, 1999 VERTIGO by W. G. Sebald -- SIGNED, first edition.W. G. Sebald or Max Sebald -- was a German writer and academic; and at the time of his death at the age of 57, he was being cited by many literary critics as one of the greatest living authors. The late authors second book consists of four narratives. The first of its four sections is a short but conventional biography of Stendhal, who is referred to not by his pen name but by his given name of Beyle. The second is a travelogue of two journeys made to the Alpine region by an unnamed narrator whose biography resembles Sebald's; an episode from the life of Casanova is also featured. The third describes a difficult period in the life of Kafka, referred to only as "Dr. K." And the fourth is a nostalgic recounting of the narrator's visit to his German hometown of "W," a rural village which he has seen nothing of for decades. First published in Germany & translated by Michael Hulse. By all accounts a very small print run of this edition and is thereby an extremely rare find.

        Tintypes

      - BIDAUT, JAYNE HINDS. Tintypes, No. 45 of an edition of 100, quarto, Graphis, 1999, pp. 224, red cloth boards in a black cloth-covered wooden clamshell box, essay by Eugenia Parry, with a dedication by the artist and an original tintype of a butterfly (2.5x3.5 inches) signed by the artist. Fine in scuffed clamshell. A mostly forgotten phenomenon, the tintype is a thin piece of sheet iron enameled black or brown-black with a collodion coating to hold an image. It was the first photographic process that was widely available to anybody, with itinerant practitioners of the art selling their work for little money. The tintype brought the first instances of people mugging and generally making fools of themselves in front of a camera, so it is interesting to come upon a serious artist working in this medium In her explanatory essay, Parry takes us through the thinking that brought Bidaut to the tintype as her means of expression. “Modern chemistries wouldn’t do. . She chose ferrotype (also called tintype) in which ‘The Dark - felt beautiful-,’ for the dusky shadings of the process impart to everything captured the aura of perpetual twilight. . Returning to ferrotype, photographically retrograde, was also an act of deliberate preservation ‘against the strange disease of modern life.’ ” The book is largely made up of toned and color plates reproducing Bidaut’s work: academy figures, insects and stereo nudes. Bidaut’s hand-written inscription on the last page says: Dec. 23, 1999 This book is dedicated to my parents - without whom none of this would have been possible and in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary.         How Many Strads? Our Heritage from the Master; a Tribute to the Memory of a Great Genius

Bein & Fushi, Chicago 1999 - Thick Quarto. Enlarged and Expanded Edition. 464 pages. While the 1945 edition was a great contribution, this new expanded edition is the definitive reference for those at the highest level of understanding Strads for whom expertise is essential. Not only is it issued in a far superior binding and high quality paper but with the research of Charles Beare and Peter Biddulph along with Harry Benson there is an improved text. Of course, it is the four additional chapters containing histories and photographs of violins not previously illustrated in any of the violin literature as well as exploring the cellos from Stradivari's last years that are part of its major contribution as well as containing several newly illustrated instruments. These new photographs are mostly from the archives of Bein & Fushi. Finally, the bibliography lists all the major contributions since the original 1945 edition as well as the location and seventy-five items not found in Herbert Goodkind's "Violin Iconography of Antonio Strativari". The index and extensive updated bibliography complete what is a major contribution to violin literature. A fine bright copy bound in red cloth lettered and decorated in black and gilt, spine black and gilt, decorative endpapers. An exceptionally nice copy.

How Many Strads? Our Heritage from the Master; a Tribute to the Memory of a Great Genius

Chicago: Bein & Fushi, 1999. Thick Quarto.
