        Mummy Mummies

Didier Mutel, [Rome] 1999 - 48 pp. 25cm x 32cm. Printed by Didier Mutel on the press of the Villa Médicis in Rome on Velin d’Arches, 160 grams, in a limited edition of 44 copies, 20 of which are numbered 1-20 for Alain Fleischer, 20 copies numbered 21-40 for Didier Mutel, and 4 copies numbered 41-44 reserved for friends of the collaborators, all copies signed by Fleischer and Mutel. Text and original photographs by Alain Fleischer published at the l’Académie de France, Villa Médicis in Rome. The text was photoengraved and etched with acid on copper plates. Six original chemically unfixed silver gelatin photographs, protected by red safelight polyester barrier sheets, and housed in a lead slipcase. Mummy, Mummies is the second work of Didier Mutel published in Rome, in collaboration with Alain Fleischer, an artist and director of the Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains. Fleischer provided Mutel with a set of six original photographs of mummies from the Crypt of Ferentillo in the Umbria region of Italy, and an essay accompanying the images. The essay addresses the ironic tension Fleischer sees between the preservation of human remains in mummified form and preservation by photographic means, evaluating the imprint ("empreinte") that each leaves to posterity. Mounted in blind impressions facing the text, the photographs were prepared unfixed, but protected from light damage by red safelight barrier sheets which conserve the images just as the mummies of Ferentillo are conserved in their crypt—each exposition of the images to the bare light of day will, over time, bring out in each of them the dark into which they will disappear. SIGNED by Mary Heebner on the colophon. Fine. Mary Heebner only muses upon consequential subjects. In the late summer of 1995, Heebner spent three weeks in Iceland; instead of reading fiction or sagas, Heebner found herself reading geology texts. She learned that while the island of Iceland is 16 to 18 million years old, it was only occupied by humans in 850 CE. She trekked across land that was only 500 years old, full of minerals and redolent with stunning colors, chartreuse, ochre, cobalt green, viridian and violet. The original text and abstract artwork in this portfolio reflects the feelings evoked on the artist’s visit to this new land; the artwork is suitable for framing.

Quarto, original black paper-covered boards, original photographic dust jacket. Original gelatin silver photograph (8 by 6-1/2 inches) housed in protective case. $3500.First edition of this major retrospective of KaldeiÂ’s work, accompanied by a vintage gelatin silver photograph, number 2 of only 100 printed, signed by Khaldei on the verso, showing Russian poet Yevgeny Dolmatovski holding a plaster head of Hitler in a photograph taken by Khaldei in Berlin, on May 2, 1956.“Best known for his shot of Russian soldiers hoisting their flag over the Reichstag as Berlin fell in 1945, Yevgeny Khaldei [was] RussiaÂ’s greatest combat photographer, a 20th-century master” (New York Times). Khaldei “worked as a front-line photographer throughout the Second World WarÂ… Afterwards he covered the Potsdam Conference and the Nuremberg Trials. He suffered anti-Semitic persecution in the 1950s, but later returned to work for TASS and Pravda” (Lenman, 341). This volume appeared in conjunction with an exhibit commemorating the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII, held in Tel Aviv at Beth Hatefutsoth, the Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora. Icons of War features KhaldeiÂ’s own commentary and 90 powerful photogravures-including images of Stalin, Goering and KhaldeiÂ’s iconic “Raising the Soviet Flag Over the Reichstag,” some published here for the first time. With a foreword by Prime Minister Ehud Barak; essays by historian Matitiahu Mayzel and curator Rachel Schnold. Text in Hebrew and English. An exceptionally fine copy, with scarce signed photograph.
