1999. EULALIE. ORIGINAL ART: OLD MOTHER HUBBARD [MOTHER GOOSE] by Eulalie [Banks]. This piece features the full range of colors and has nice background detail as well. Eulalie Banks had a long and successful career as an illustrator. Although she was born in England in 1895, most of her professional life was spent in California. She died at the age of 104 in 1999.

Tender Buttons. Etchings by Susan Weil

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 1999. One of 50 copies, all on hand-made papers, each signed by the artist, Susan Weil. 76pp; page size: 11-1/2 inches x 13-1/2 inches. Bound by Zahra Partovi and Priscilla Spitler: peach Dieu Donne hand-made paper with 5 chine colle original etchings by Susan Weil that are Cubist portraits of Gertrude Stein (recognizable features, some set askew, title in red in calligraphy by Jerry Kelly across front panel purple silk spine, binding signatures sewn Coptic style with additional structural feature of extended hollow attached to text spine and to the separate spine piece of the cover allowing the book to open completely flat, housed in two color purple silk clamshell box, title in gold gilt on spine in calligraphy by Jerry Kelly, new. Susan Weil's first book with Vincent FitzGerald, EPIPHANIES by James Joyce (1986) is a joint effort that succeeds completely. Her fascination with words and word-play, incorporating them into visual images that have a sense of motion that is more than simply turning pages, was further explored and polished with publication of GIACOMO JOYCE (1989). It seems inevitable that she would rise to the challenge of Gertrude Stein's TENDER BUTTONS, first published in Paris in 1914, in which Stein attempted to verbalize with prose poems the cubist art of her circle in Paris. According to Weil, Stein, with this work, "invented verbal cubism." In this edition, beautifully printed by Daniel Keleher in Meridien type designed by Adrian Frutiger, the text is shaped by the placement of Weil's etchings, often in the reverse when the plate marks leave "cubes" as a residue on the verso. The etchings were pulled by Aleksandar Duravcevic, Kelly Driscoll and Vincent FitzGerald. As with all books from Vincent FitzGerald & Company, this is a subtle book. At once immediately accessible, appreciation for its complexity grows with opening and reading / viewing this work of art.
