Writing on the Body; Degas's Words about Drawing the Figure

San Francisco: Pacific Editions, printed at The Greenwood Press, 1999. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hobson, Charles. Number 35 of 45 copies, quarto size, [19] pp., signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) has long been considered one of the greatest of the French impressionists, especially concerning the female body in movement which is given a masterful homage in this intriguing volume. Degas did many monotypes "and in many cases he applied pastel over the ghost version to create a finished piece." Charles Hobson's own masterful pastel and photogravures of the female nude, having a self-proclaimed "lifelong influence" by Degas, are given a loving home beside Degas' words. The text was selected from letters and other material, his words are not only printed typographically on pages facing the plates but overlaid in Degas' actual handwriting to the copper images created by Hobson.***DESCRIPTION: Original quarter rust-red cloth with Degas' handwriting in facsimile to the cloth in black, hand painted paper covered boards illustrated with a reproduction of a Degas drawing, all edges uncut, concertina binding, eight photogravures; BFK Rives paper, Meridien type, quarto size (11.5" by 7.75"), unpaginated [19] pp., limited edition of 45 copies, this number 35, signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase decorated with facsimiles of Degas' writing, a nib pen imprinted with the title is attached to the backstrip.***CONDITION: Fine copy, like new, in fine slipcase.***CITATION: Experiments in Navigation, pp. 30-33.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         THE DWELLINGS OF THE PHILOSOPHERS.

Boulder: 1999. The true identity of the alchemical adept calling himself "Fulcanelli" has never been publicly discovered but there are few who would not recognize his works as the most significant contribution to the Great Art in more than 100 years. The author displays an immense knowledge of the practices of Alchemy and of the Alchemists of the Middle Ages. For for the first time he makes clear the differences between Chemistry, Spagyrics, Archemy, and Alchemy. For many, the most amazing revelation of the book will be the author's review and exhaustive interpretation of the extensive statuary, bas relief, and other artistic devices built into the homes of numerous Medieval Alchemists. These works of art for centuries have revealed openly the secrets of Alchemy to all who have the eyes to see. This long awaited, meticulously translated work from the original French will be of immense benefit to those who seek to understand Alchemy for what it truly is--the art and science of Creation and Transformation of physical form through the agency of Man. With thirty-nine illustrations by Julien Champagne; Translated by Brigitte Donvez and Lionel Perrin; Limited issue of 300 copies bound in leather, though low quality bonded leather, tan marbled end papers and red marking ribbon; 550 pages. Fine condition in very good dust jacket; Jacket has a few small scrapes to the fore-edge.

REAPER." Original pastel for "Apocalypse Clocks.",

(Northampton), 1999. - A figure seated within a large clockwork mechanism is drawn by two buffalo reaping wheat. The colors are ochre, orange, vermillion, blues, greens, and purple. Pastel measures 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 and is tipped to a larger mat. Signed "Kuch 1999." Fine. Kuch creates his book images first as pastels or watercolors. They are larger than the engravings. In this pastel all the elements of the final etching are the same; but the colors, and hence the mood, are different. The dark, threatening sky, orange reaping machine, and golden wheat of the pastel become a rain-swept straw-colored sky, black grasses, and a violet reaper in the etching. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A Core Collection; A Comprehensive Run of 17 Volumes

1999 - 17 vols. A comprehensive, high quality run of Proulx's work from her first nonfiction how-to books, to her award winning novels and stories, but this is a 20th century collection, and anyway, her 21st century titles are all common and you can add them for cheap if you like. 1) Great Grapes (1980). 1st edition (published by Storey Publications). Her first book, a 32 page monograph. Fine in wrappers. 2) Making the Best Apple Cider (1980). 1st edition (published by Garden Way, with little girl on cover, ads to A-47). A 32 page monograph. Near fine in wrappers, complete with 4 pages of ads on yellow paper. 3) Making the Best Apple Cider (after 1980). 2nd edition (published by Storey, with old man on cover, ads to A-137). Wraps. Fine. Not scarce. 4) Sweet and Hard Cider (1980). 1st edition. Her (co-written) first substantial book. Pictorial boards. The usual binding is in wrappers, this one is a scarce hardbound copy produced only for specially requested library pre-orders, with stamps on the front endpapers and a tiny one to the dedication page, otherwise fine, unworn, and despite the stamps, the only hardbound copy I've ever seen. The first significant publication of her 6 how-to books, written 8 years before she could get any of her fiction published. 5) What'll You Take For It (1981). 1st edition, an essay exploring barter. Her first individually published book. Wrappers a bit rubbed, spine faded, else near fine and unread. 6) The Complete Dairy Foods Cookbook (1982). 1st edition. Fine in a dustjacket with a 1/2" tear and slightly fade spine, else fine. Her second (and last) co-written book, the first with an E. before Annie. 7) Fences & Gates, Walkways, Walls & Drives (1983). 1st edition. Fine. Scarcer hardcover binding of the common trade issue in wraps, likely done with libraries in mind but our copy has no library marks. 8) The Gardner's Journal and Record Book (1983). 1st edition, not really an instruction book but not lacking in guidance either (only mad fools, gardeners and New Yorkers, go out in pouring rain). Pictorial boards. Fine. 9) The Fine Art of Salad Gardening (1985). 1st edition. Fine in fine dustjacket. Pretty much, chase off the gophers so you can eat like one. 10) The Gourmet Gardener (1987). 1st edition. Faded spine, else near fine in wrappers. Her last how-to book. "A garden is an honest place." -Emerson 11) Heart Songs (NY, 1988). 1st edition. Her first fiction. 9 mesmerizing short stories. Signed. Tiny NFS stamp, maybe a review copy, maybe not. Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Sharp angles to small things. 12) Postcards (NY, 1992). 1st edition. Her first novel. Signed and inscribed with a 4 line quotation (a superior inscription). Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Signed copies are around, inscribed ones are less common. 13) The Shipping News (NY, 1992). Advance excerpt (45 pages). Near fine pictorial wrappers with fading to the spine. 14) The Shipping News (NY, 1993). 1st edition. Pulitzer Prize. Signed and inscribed, ".long may your big jib draw." Fine in near fine dustjacket with fading to the spine. Turns a phrase better than her counterparts, and writes one elegant sentence after another. 15) Accordion Crimes (NY, 1996). 1st edition. Signed on the integral title page, a distinction of some note considering that 2,500 copies were signed on a tipped-in leaf. Fine in fine dustjacket. 16) Brokeback Mountain (London, 1998). 1st edition. Source of the film. Stiff pictorial wrappers. Near fine with fading to the spine. You had me at "Howdy." 17) Close Range (NY, 1999). 1st edition. Fine in fine dustjacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Harry Potter's wizarding adventures have had an unrivalled impact on popular culture today; indeed, some have referred to adults between the ages of roughly 20-30 years old as 'the Harry Potter generation'. Harry Potter is a series of many genres, including fantasy, bildungsroman, and the British school story (which includes elements of mystery, thriller, adventure, and romance). According to Rowling, the main theme of the books is death – although prejudice, corruption, and madness can be seen as dominant motifs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Complete Set of Signed Harry Potter Deluxe Editions

Bloomsbury 1999 - 2007, London - A wonderful complete set of the Harry Potter deluxe editions. All first editions, and presumed first printings, supplied to a book shop at the time of release. All in the original cellophane wrap, with just slight damage to the wrapper on Philosopher's Stone, otherwise all in fine condition. Very unusually all have an accompanying signed official Bloomsbury book plate. All are in fine condition. Also included is a hand written note on official Bloomsbury compliment slip card referencing the book plates, stating 'Dear Christine, I hope these prove useful in promotion of the new Harry Potter. Best Wishes R'. Overall a truly exemplary set, a fantastic investment for any serious Harry Potter collection. Notoriously hard to find unopened, and almost heard of with signed book plates kept separately alongside - ordinarily they would have been tipped in to the book to help promote sales.  [Attributes: Hard Cover]

168 Jump Into Hell: A True Story of Betrayed Allied Airmen

Self Published, Canada 1999 - 0968419801 290 pages. Reproductions of black and white photos in text. "Whether by accident or design, governments and agencies have remained silent, so all the research has been up to us. However this true fifty year old shame must be revealed in the hope that mankind remembers and never allows it to be repeated." - from Foreword. "Our story tells what happened to 168 Allied Airmen who jumped into Northern Europe after their planes had met with an explosive and fiery end. Because our eventual betrayal to the Gestapo was accomplished so smoothly, a number of these encounters will be explained so that you can better understand our dilemma. The retelling of our encounter with our Gestapo hosts is mild, for many of us do not wish to recall the most unpleasant details that deserve to stay well hidden in the back of our minds. Now with this story told, we again wish to forget." - from Prologue. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Binding intact. A sound copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
