        Memories of My Father.

Maryland:: Shireen M. Holman,, 1998.. Edition of 25. 15 x 11" closed. Woodcuts on handmade paper and screenprints on the Arches Cover. The woodcuts are on handmade paper made of cotton rag and abaca. Towards the end of the beating, Holman added pieces of old hand woven cushion covers to the pulp. These were cushion covers which her parents had used in their home in India. She incorporated the covers' embroidered design into the woodcuts, and added a small remaining piece of the embroidery in each book. Shireen M. Holman: "This is an artist's book of visual memories of my father, who died in 1994. My father immigrated from India to the United States, where he spent the last thirty years of his life. The memories combine both cultures. The walking stick in one of the small books, for example, is a hand-carved stick from the hilly region of Maharashtra. It reminds me of hikes in the mountains; of a picnic interrupted by news that a tiger had beensighted in our vicinity. The bathrobe is one that he wore on cold nights in America. His glasses and chappals (Indian sandals that he wore no matter what the weather) were still beside his bed after he died; books and music represent his interests. The fire in the family room conveys his warmth and love. It makes me think of his deep attachment to family, and the many occasions he created for bringing us all together. I used one of the designs from a carved frieze on our house in India as the border for the woodcuts.

        The Book of Love

      W. W. Norton & Company, New York, New York, U.S.A 1998 - This impressive literary compilation of love, perhaps the most sought after and important human emotion borne of intimate relationships, includes many classic excerpts and works, along with contemporary and previously unpublished contributions. It is signed by the two editor/contributors and three notable and esteemed authors and academics. Roald Hoffmann is a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry (1981), the Cornell University Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters, Emeritus and respected poet ("The Metamict State," "Gaps and Verges"). He contributes a poem, "How It Grows" to this compilation. Stephen ("Steve") F. Poleskie is a performance artist of the first rank as a former aerial performer of aircraft aerobatics. His earthbound art includes drawings and silk screens in museums and private collections world-wide. Poleskie is a former Cornell University teacher and author of fiction (e.g., "The Third Candidate," "Grater Life," "Virgilia's Tempest," "Foozler's Runs" ) and Civil War historical fiction ("The Balloonist, The Story of T. S. C. Lowe, Inventer, Magician, and Father of the U.S. Air Force"). His contribution in "The Book of Love" is a short story titled "Love and Janus Zyvka." James McConkey, the Cornell University Goldwin Smith Professor of English, Emeritus, has authored critically praised novels (e.g.,"To A Distant Island," "Rowan's Progress," "Court of Memory," "Stories from My Life with the Other Animals," The Tree House Confessions,"The Anatomy of Memory," and "Kayo"). His "Idyll" is included in this book. Editors Diane Ackerman and Jeanne Mackin are well-known for their novels. Diane Ackerman's prodigious work includes "The Zookeeper's Wife," "On Extended Wings," I Praise My Destroyer," "A Natural History of the Senses," and many others. Jeanne Mackin, an Ithaca College writing instructor, wrote the Louisa May Alcott mystery series under the pen name Anna Maclean. Her novels include "Dreams of Empire," "The Sweet By and By," and "The Frenchwoman." A literary celebration with an unusual panoply of literary lions' autographs under a gift inscription penned by Diane Ackerman. "The Book of Love" and dust jacket are in near fine condition, with a slight bump at the upper spine corner and slight edge curl, minimized by an archival clear cover that is easily removed. 826 clean and unmarked pages.         Intimacy Outlawed by the Commissar of Aids

1998 - Pen, ink and watercolour on paper. Signed, inscribed with the full title and dated '98 in pen in the bottom left hand corner. 30 x 20.5 cm. Although Beiles always made pen and pencil drawings from the late 30s onwards, his interest in making art intensified from the late 80s onwards when he was inspired by his friend William Burroughs's exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York in 1988. I have a letter in my archive from the Shafrazi Gallery confirming that they had posted a catalogue to Beiles of this current show. The letter was written by Christopher Gallagher and dated May 7, 1988. Burroughs even said in an interview around this time that "a couple of shot-gun paintings and drawings taking me only a few hours can earn me more than the entire fee earned in writing a book that takes years". Beiles started to exhibit regularly in Johannesburg from the early 90s onwards and was represented by the now defunct Newtown Galleries. Artworks by Beiles are considered rare with only a couple of hundred drawings in watercolours estimated to have been produced. The work is unframed. ONCO ( Or Nearest Cash Offer).         NEW CASTLE A Brief Encounter

Risbury, Herefordshire: The Whittington Press, 1998. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND NUMBERED AND LIMITED, one of only 100 copies, and the only issue as no trade edition has been printed. With eleven beautiful hand stenciled pochoir illustrations coloured in watercolours by artist Miriam Macgregor, and with one initial in colours. 4to, in the original binding by the Fine Bindery of artist designed brick-red paper over boards, hand-stenciled in a pattern resembling brick paving stones, in the original slipcase. 12 ff, unpaginated. A pristine and perfect as new copy of this lovely book. FIRST EDITION, LIMITED AND SIGNED. A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE CONTEMPORARY EXAMPLE OF POCHOIR AND WATERCOLOUR ILLUSTRATION. Macgregor and the Whittington Press have jointed talents to produce a book that can stand proudly beside the wonderful art deco period productions of the Curwen Press. These lovingly hand-coloured pages capture Ms. Macregor's impressions in both words and images of her brief visit to New Castle, Delaware, to attend the Oak Knoll Fest, a bi-annual celebration of book arts, fine press, and beautiful books. The text was hand-set in 14 point Walbaum and was printed at Whittington on heavy Zerkall mould-made paper. Macgregor's eleven pochoir illustrations include four that are full page and one that is a two page spread.
