        Kaldar - World of Antares

Royal Oak, Michigan: Haffner Press, 1998. 1st and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Arfstrom, Jon. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 235 pp. Special edition of 300, this no. 93, pictorial limitation page facing the title page. Edmond Moore Hamilton (1904-1977) is credited with writing, in 1936, the first hardcover compilation of what would come to be known as the science fiction genre, "The Horror of the Asteriod and Other Tales of Planetary Horror". This volume is a collection of three stories from the fragile pulp pages of Magic Carpet and Weird Tales magazines, and is the first hardbound edition of the stories. It features original artwork by 1940's Weird Tales illustrator Jon Arfstrom as well as an introduction by Edmond Hamilton's longtime friend, Ray Bradbury. Also included is an autobiographical article by Hamilton from the January 1934 fanzine, Fantasy Magazine (N.B., some of the above info from the Press' web site). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in black cloth with gilt decoration and lettering on the spine designed to match the Arkham House editions of Robert E. Howard's "Skullface and Others" and William Hope Hodgson's "The House on the Borderlands", plain endpapers, pictorial limitation page serving as frontispiece, vignette of a creature on the title page, octavo size (just under 9" tall), pagination: (i-viii) being the preliminaries, (i)-iv being the introduction by Ray Bradbury, 2 blanks (v-vi), (1)-219, blank (220), colophon (221). The unclipped dust jacket shows the original price of $55.00, and displays wrap-around cover art by Jon Arfstrom on a black background, white lettering on the front and spine, short summary of book on the front flap, author and artist bios on the back flap. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, the text block is crisp and tight as though the book has never been read, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is a minute amount of rubbing on the gilt on the spine, else fine. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and is also fine overall, the colours on the spine are bright and true to the front panel (no sunning), the edges of the jacket are crisp (no edgewear); our dust jacket is the first state, with the black matte finish, and does show a few light scuff marks (per the publisher the printer shipped the books unprotected, and the black in on the dust jackets scuffs too easily and mars the finish); there is also a very light trace of black ink residue from the cloth binding on the verso of the dust jacket where the flaps meet the panels, else fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       [New York]: The Limited Editions Club (1998), 1998. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Ranney, Edward. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 30 p. Signed by Artist. Limited edition of 300 copies, this no. 56, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST ON THE COLOPHON PAGE, with monthly newsletter loosely laid in. Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (born Ricardo Eliecer Neftali Reyes y Bosoalto, 1904-1973) became known as a poet at the young age of 10 years and began publishing his verse at 15; Gabriel Garcia Marquez once called Neruda "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language", and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. This volume is a portion of the Canto General (General Song) which consists of more than 15,000 lines, being a telling of the entire American Western Hemisphere from an Hispanic American perspective; it is a beautiful poem of praise to the continent as it flourished before the arrival of the Spanish. Wonderfully brought to life by the photogravures of the work of Edward Ranney (b. 1942), who has been internationally recognized for his images of Inca and Mayan landscapes and architecture; Scientific American commented that Ranney did "more than any other photographer to show the works of the Incas as they are set into numinous mountain landscapes that somehow called forth those superb forms into stone" (N.B., above info from Wiki and the monthly newsletter).***DESCRIPTION: Bound in rough green linen over boards, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, text presented in both Spanish and English in two columns, the ten photogravures bound in throughout the text; type Monotype Centaur on Velin Arches, printed at the Golgonooza Letter Foundry with the photogravures made and printed by Jon Goodman, oblong, being approximately 12" tall and 14.5" wide, unpaginated with fifteen printed leaves; limited edition of 300, this no. 56, signed by Edward Ranney; monthly newsletter loosely laid in. First published as the Adventures of Pryderi (University of Wales Press, 1962), the text concerns the story of Pryderi, a central character in all four branches of the Mabinogi, the classic of Welsh medieval literature. The book has its genesis in a series of radio talks for children broadcast in 1943 and later published with illustrations by Leslie Jones. Kyffin Williams's striking illustrations were cut in the late 1950's and were-in the artists 81st year- finally re-united with the text which was their original inspiration. Not often seen on the market! [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Timothy McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, a.k.a "Gegenshein"

(Brooklyn): (McSweeney's). 1998. The first issue of Dave Eggers' literary journal, which reportedly included only materials that had already been rejected by other publications. This copy is signed by Eggers ("Thank you/ D.E."), David Foster Wallace (on the dedication page), Rick Moody, Neal Pollack, Sarah Vowell, Arthur Bradford, and Todd Pruzan. McSweeney's went on to be one of the most influential publishing companies of the first decade of the 21st century: in addition to publishing the journal McSweeney's, with its innovative formats and content, it became a book publisher, introducing new writers and publishing new work by a number of already well-regarded writers. Light use; near fine in wrappers. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

        Ulysses

Ulysses by James Joyce. Preface by Stephen James Joyce. Introduction by Jacques Aubert. With etchings by Mimmo Paladino. London: The Folio Society, 1998 [2004]. "This edition of Ulysses has been published by The Folio Society on 16 June 2004 to mark the centenary of the day on which the action of the book is set. It is limited to 1760 copies, of which 1750 are for sale, bound in full goatskin leather blocked with a design by Jeff Clements. This is Copy No. 744".Small quarto (9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches; 235 x 165 mm.). xxii, 735, [1, blank] pp. Eighteen etchings in black, white, and gold by Mimo Paladino. Full turquoise-blue goatskin, covers and spine decorated in gilt and black from a design by Jeff Clements, smooth spine decorated in black and lettered in gilt, gold end-papers, top edge gilt. A mint copy housed in the original, gold lined, dark blue buckram clamshell case blocked with James Joyce's signature on the front and lettered "Ulysses" in gilt on spine. Mint as issued together with the original prospectus and photographs in the original shipping carton. The text used is the one as issued in the 1998 Folio Society edition (which takes the text of the 1926 second edition) set in Old Style with Pastonchi display. Paladino's etchings were first published in a limited edition of eighteen copies."Ulysses is by no means an easy or straightforward book; it is a challenging book… Reading a book such as Ulysses is not only a challenge, it is a unique face à face between writer and reader… The ultimate arbiter … must remain the reader, the listener, the beholder; not the academic or critic. I do not believe that literature can be taught. En revanche one can when the human appetite, open the human mind. If our cultures and civilizations are to be preserved and carried forward down through the ages, the creator must remain the master of his oeuvre, particularly beyond the grave. It is that timeless Joycean mastery that Paladino's illustrations amplify with delicate expressiveness and resonance of sensibility. Though this breathtaking edition is long out of print, I was fortunate enough to track down a copy for our shared enjoyment. (Preface by Stephen Joyce, James's nephew). One of the most important works of Modernist literature, it has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement" (Maurice Beebe, Ulysses and the Age of Modernism. James Joyce Quarterly Vol. 10, no. I). "Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so fore-grounded the process of thinking" (Declan Kiberd, Ulysses, Modernism's Most Sociable Masterpiece).Ulysses chronicles the passage of Leopold Bloom through Dublin during an ordinary day, 16 June 1904 (the day of Joyce's first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle). The title alludes to Odysseus (Latinized into Ulysses), the hero of Homer's Odyssey, and establishes a series of parallels between characters and events in Homer's poem and Joyce's novel (e.g., the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus). Ulysses is approximately 265,000 words in length and uses a lexicon of 30,030 words (including proper names, plurals and various verb tenses), divided into eighteen episodes. Since publication, the book attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from early obscenity trials to protracted textual "Joyce Wars." Ulysses' stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose - full of puns, parodies, and allusions, as well as its rich characterizations and broad humor, made the book a highly regarded novel in the Modernist pantheon. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Ulysses first on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.Mimmo Paladino (1948-) is an Italian sculptor, painter and printmaker. Great literature is the underlying thread that, over the years, has led him to illustrate the icons of world culture, such as Tristes Tropiques, Ulysses, the Homeric poems, Pinocchio and Don Quixote.
