Walter Niedermayr: Reservate Des Augenblicks (Momentary Resorts)

Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern, Germany 1998 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine, gray cloth-covered boards with title stamped in white on spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Walter Niedermayr. Essays (in German and English) by Sigrid Hauser, Francesco Bonami and Guy Tortosa. Designed by Little Stars of Bethlehem (Manfred Veigl / Georg Wagenhuber), Vienna. Includes a list of plates, an exhibition history, bibliography and brief biographies on the contributors. 116 pp., with 98 four-color and 17 black-and-white plates. 11-1/4 x 13 inches. This first edition was limited to 2650 copies. Published on the occasion of exhibitions at AR/GE Kunst Galerie Museum, Bolzano, Centre Photographique d'Ile de France, Pontault-Combault, Fundación BBK, Bilbao, Gallery Robert Miller, New York, Musée Château, d'Annecy and RUPERTINUM, Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art, Salzburg. CONDITION: Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (small crease along lower front edge). [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From the publisher: "Tram stations, ski runs and panoramic terraces - the Alps are a playground for winter sports fans and enthusiastic mountain climbers: a populated Alpine leisure park. In his tableaus from close-up photos Walter Niedermayr documents the effects of Alpine tourism on the mountain world. But his pictures on the 'injuries' to the landscape are by no means pure photographic depictions of reality; he works in a subtle way with minimal changes of angle and viewpoint, and uses scarcely perceptible alterations to combine individual pictures into disturbing photo arrangements, achieving an intensity of seeing. At the same time, Niedermayr's artistic, photographic eye captures the traces of the Alpine leisure industry as aesthetic signs and lines in the landscape. The moments of tension in his photos emerge not least from the individualistic ambivalence between the beautiful appearance of the composition and the knowledge of the vulnerability of the mountain world and the ecological danger it faces. Momentary Resorts [was] created during three years of research in the Alpine region." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Communication in the Presence of Noise

New York: The Institute of Radio Engineers. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. RARE FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of one of Shannon's most influential papers. "Shannon's ideas, described in this paper in a lucid engineering fashion and complementing his celebrated work ['A mathematical theory of communication'], which established the discipline of information theory, affected in a profound fashion the very thinking on the structure, components, design, and analysis of communications systems in general. As such, and through the implementation of state-of-the-art communications systems and their implications on modern communications technology, which plays an ever increasing role in modern society, these ideas of Shannon's had an influence well beyond the technical professional world of electronics engineers and mathematicians.   "The focus of Shannon's paper is on the transmission of continuous-time (or 'waveform') sources over continuous-time channels. Using the sampling theorem, Shannon shows how waveform signals can be represented by vectors in finite-dimensional Euclidean space. He then exploits this representation to establish important facts concerning communication of a waveform source over a waveform channel in the presence of waveform noise. In particular, he gives a geometric proof of the theorem that establishes the famous formula W log(1 + S) for the capacity of a channel with bandwidth W, additive thermal (i.e., Gaussian) noise, and signal-to-noise ratio S" (A. D. Wyner & S. Shamai, 'Introduction to "Communication in the presence of noise" by C. E. Shannon, Proceedings of the IEEE, Vol. 86, No. 2, February 1998). IN: Proceedings of the I.R.E., Vol. 37, No. 1, January 1949, pp. 10-21. New York: The Institute of Radio Engineers, 1949. Quarto, original wrappers. A little edgewear, otherwise fine.         BRUCE DAVIDSON: BROOKLYN GANG - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe, NM 1998 - 98pp, 70 b&w gravure plates. "These photographs of Brooklyn gangs, Bruce Davidson's first photographic project, were undertaken when he was barely older than the rough boys depicted in the work. Never before published as a whole, though frequently excerpted in collections, this gritty monograph is photo documentary at its best". Photographed during the Summer of 1959, (and uncollected in book form until this undertaking) Davidson's revealing portraits of the daily life of these New York J.D.s very much mirror those in his groundbreaking work, "The Bikeriders". A pristine copy of the 1998 Twin Palms first edition bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATION "For . Bruce Davidson" in black ink on the front pastedown.         PORNOGRAPHIC ("POR'NE-GRAF'IK") - Rare Pristine Copy of The Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition With Original Silver-Gelatin Print

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998 - 1st Printing. Signed. 102 pages. Published in 1998. Landmark collection of sex pictures. Now considered a contemporary erotic art photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ken Probst and Jack Woody: Regular-sized volume format in oblong shape. Glossy red hard boards with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ken Probst. "Ballad For the Beautiful Boy Or Why I Like Photography" by A. M. Homes. List of Plates appended at the end. Black cloth clamshell box. 10 X 8 inch original silver-gelatin print mounted on pristine-white boards and laid into the box. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "behind-the-scenes" photographs of the adult-entertainment stars "in action". Popularly (and aptly) known as The Valley, an actual place as well as the metaphorical opposite of The Heights of Hollywood, American pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of this puritanical country's most reliable exports. Ken Probst was hired to photograph film actors for publicity pictures and video boxes. Once on the sets, he began to photograph behind-the-scenes, revealing the absurdity, pathos, and humanity of the business. Despite its ironic stance, it is a highly erotic collection, and provides a remarkable glimpse of the mechanics of manufacturing desire. That is why the original print that the Deluxe Edition comes with is stunning: The cameraman is visible in the foreground but only as a silhouette while the male actors (who are in the throes of anal sex) in the background are brightly lit, reversing the focussed foreground/blurred background photographic convention, in keeping with Probst's point about the "behind-the-scenes" versus "in action" dynamic of desire. One of the most unusual erotica books ever published, this is an absolute "must-have" edition for Ken Probst and erotic art photography collectors. This copy of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition is Number 50/50, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, the very last copy in the edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the page opposite the very first plate by Ken Probst. It comes with an archival 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print that is mounted in white boards, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil by the photographer: "Brad & Corey 50/50 Ken Probst". This title is an erotic photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 48 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy.         Typed Letter, Signed ("Samuel R. Delany"), to science fiction author Tom Disch, discussing science fiction criticism, Disch's book The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of, including Disch's pointed critique of The Norton Book of Science Fiction (edited by Ursula K. Le Guin and Brian Ateberry, and response to one of Disch's critiques of a work by Delany

New York, 4 june 1998 - Interesting and substantial letter "Dear Tom, "Two nights back I finished The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of and - as they say - thoroughly enjoyed it. - I was, of course, delighted to see you break your own strictures and champion Joanna's The Female Man! "I think the story of Ursula and The Norton Book of SF is, if anything, shoddier then even the tale you tell. After all, one person's ideology is another person's ethics. And however namby-pamby, simpering, and milktoast you find her politics, if you were right it would mean decisions about which pieces to use were at least ethics driven, however much those ethics aren't yours. "But I don't think it was even that. "When Ursula contacted me about using my story High Weir, the first thing I remembered was, of course, how, at a Milford, lo, these many years back, you once pointed out - and quite rightly - that the story was probably my weakest SF tale to date [and I've still only written a dozen]; it contains the appalling phrase "the pretty Micronesian biochemist," which I can only hear, even now, voiced in your most disdainful/amused tones. "(I write it; my neck reddens -) "Said I to Ursula over the phone: "Gosh, Ursula, this is a Norton Anthology. It's going to be used as a teaching text all over the country. You want to represent me and my part in the development of '60s SF by what I and pretty much everyone else with any taste consider among my two or three worst pieces. Why not take one of the really good ones?" "Said Ursula to me: "No, Chip. You're making the same mistake some of the other writers have. This is not a Norton Anthology of SF. This is a Norton Book of SF. They're not the same thing. -" She went on to cite even your 'misunderstanding,' with the greatest regret. - If you take Ursula at her word, as I'm inclined to, she was still purposely avoiding the stories that should have been in the book, given its final, because they had appeared before in other places! - Most people I know - yes, in academe, use the volume practically as something to curse by." (DISCH, THOMAS M.) 4to. 6-1/2 pp. Fine
