        Brooklyn Gang

Twin Palms: Santa Fe, 1998. First Edition. Hardcover.. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to, 98pp. Yellow cloth in printed dustwrap. Numerous Black & White plates. One of 4000 trade copies. Printed by sheet fed gravure. More images available on request. A wonderful copy of an exeedingly difficult book to find in good condition. "During the summer of 1959, Bruce Davidson followed a loosely knit "gang" of teenagers around Brooklyn, New York. His camera captured these children of the James Dean generation in both private and public moments at the soda fountain, the tattoo parlor, Coney Island, and late-night basement dance parties. The beautiful adolescents that fill the pages of this book exude a cool sensuality which came by way of the young Brando and Dean, and traveled from American shores around the world. Davidson has created an exquisite photographic elegy for a time when, in retrospect, we all seemed young". A real classic.

This book celebrates his work in both arts, two arts which for Metoyer are completely separate and have nothing in common but their creator. His photographs do not illustrate his poems nor is his poetry a commentary on his photography. They are merely separate manifestations of a similar genius.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone [First Australian Edition]

[Maryborough, Vic. Australia]: Bloomsbury, [1998]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The first in J. K. Rowling's blockbuster seven-book Harry Potter series. This copy is the first Australian edition (stated First published in Great Britain in 1997 on copyright page, with full number line). Illustrated boards include the 1997 Gold Award Winner seal on the bottom left cover. An excerpted review by the Sunday Telegraph runs along the bottom front cover, with additional reviews on the back board beneath a publisher's blurb about the story. The dust jacket also contains the Gold Award seal, and notice of same runs along the bottom front cover. The back of the dust jacket contains the same publisher's blurb but not the reviews. Pricing information is ommitted entirely from the jacket and oddly, the ISBN on the jacket is that of the first British paperback edition. In contrast, the printer's imprint page contains only the ISBN of the Brittish hardback. The copyright holder is listed as 'Joanne' Rowling, which was shortened to 'J.K.' in later editions and used throughout the rest of the series. The book is dated 1997, but the presence of the Gold Award winner seal on the cover and a notice of availability of the second book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, suggests the book was printed in 1998. A scarce, early Harry Potter. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.

Catalog of the Thirty-Three Designer Bindings of You Can Judge a Book By Its Cover, A

Pico Rivera, California: Kater-Crafts Bookbinders, 1998. - Limited To Six Special CopiesThis Copy In A Spectacular Designer Binding By Tini Miura [MIURA, Kirsten Tini, Binder]. MIDDLETON, Bernard C. A Catalog of the Thirty-Three Miniature Designer Bindings of You Can Judge a Book By Its Cover. Compiled by Mel Kavin. Kater-Crafts Bookbinders: Pico Rivera, California, 1998.First edition, limited to six copies specially bound, and signed by each of the thirty-three contributing binders, the book designer, the printer, and all people listed in the colophon, this being copy no. 3. Oblong quarto (8 3/8 x 10 3/4 in; 212 x 273 mm). [12], 73, [1, blank], [colophon], [1, blank] pp. Color photo-illustrated throughout. A spectacular designer binding by Tini Miura of full blue crushed morocco with varicolored onlaid morocco "books", tiny green and blue metallic stars, and title and author lettering in gilt ribboned across the upper cover. Custom gold-foil doublures. Custom hand-watercolor endpapers. Hand-painted top-edge. A pristine copy. Housed in the original linen, fleece-lined clamshell case.Kirsten Tini Miura was born in 1940 and in her late teens embarked on the three year course on bookbinding in Kiel and Flensburg, in her native Germany. At the end of her examinations, her bindings were chosen as the best in all of West Germany. Following this she studied with Hugo Peller in Switzerland and at the Royal Bindery in Stockholm. In the mid 1960s, she spent a year working at the famed École Estienne in Paris. After establishing her own bindery in Stockholm, she went to Tokyo, Japan where she established her own bindery and met her future husband, the publisher Einen Miura. She still has a bindery in Tokyo, as well as one in Long Beach, California where she also teaches master classes. "Kirsten Tini Miura is an outstanding example of the accomplished independent craftswoman. The diversity of styles, including Japanese influence, is impressive and demonstrates her respect for each author. A striking feature of many of the bindings is the oleographs that are distinctly her own and very successfully complement her cover designs." (Bernard Middleton, Preface to My World of Bibliophile Binding, 1983)Signed by all of the contributing binders:David H. Barry; Raoul Bollin; James Brockman; Gerard Charriere; Jeff Clements; Paul C. Rae Fox (binding); Marianne Tidcombe (essayist, On Small Books)."How did the thirty-three designer bindings and this catalog come about? In publishing my miniature book, I was working with two internationally known designer binders, Bernard Middleton, who wrote the book and Tini Miura, who designed the binding that was bound by Kater-Crafts Bookbinders. I commissioned each of them to do a designer binding for me before the book was published. The thought occurred to me, if two designer bindings, why not more? I wrote to thirteen other binders to bring the list up to fifteen. Looking at the list of binders in the world I kept expanding until I ended up with thirty-three, an odd number, but I had to stop somewhere. The list starting with binders I knew personally than then to those I knew by reputation." (Mel Kavin, foreword). [Attributes: First Edition]

american psycho: a novel (With SIGNED bookplate)

Picador, London 1998 - With a bookplate SIGNED by the AUTHOR laid down on the front fly leaf, probably at the time of publication. This is a copy of the First Hardback Edition (First Impression) with the full number string including 1, published by Picador, London in 1998. A tight and obviously unread copy which is very clean internally but has foxing on the top edge of the text block and a few spots on the fore edge and the foot of the spine is bumped, otherwise this is a near fine copy. The unclipped dustwrapper has a 2mm. closed tear at the foot of the lower hinge, but otherwise is a near fine example with no fading whatsoever of the spine panel. This novel was first published in the U.S. and the U.K. in 1991, both editions being in paperback form only. This copy is the first hardback edition and is, as far as I'm aware, still the only trade hardback edition. Included in Callil and Toibin's The Modern Library: The Two Hundred Best Novels in English since 1950. Delivery within the U.K. will be by Special Delivery Next Day. Delivery overseas (by air) will be by Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed (when available), or by International Signed (not trackable after leaving the U.K., but fully insured and needs to be signed for upon delivery).         Leaf on vellum from Graecismus of Evrard de Bethune

Germany, 1386. Manuscript leaf, 215 x 170 mm., fine calligraphic initial at top of each page, on recto enclosing sketched head of a man, capitals touched in red, 26 lines in gothic hand; vellum slightly darkened consistent with age. The initial D which begins the text contains a sketched head of a man. This decoration is characteristically German, and is very similar, for example, to the decoration in a late-thirteenth-century Bamberg Bible, sold at Sotheby's London in December 1998. This leaf has come from a fragment of eight leaves, the last with part of a dated colophon recording that the manuscript was completed before the feast of St Hedwig (16 October) 1386. This leaf contains lines from Book 10 of this grammar in Latin verse.

        DARD HUNTER & SON

N.P. (but Newtown, PA): Bird & Bull Press, 1998. quarter black morocco, leather spine label, Japanese cloth-covered boards, cloth-covered clamshell box with leather spine label. Bird & Bull Press. 4to. quarter black morocco, leather spine label, Japanese cloth-covered boards, cloth-covered clamshell box with leather spine label. 152, (6) pages, with 30 additional pages and 6 additional leaves of paper & printing samples, and reproductions. This fine letterpress work is an edition limited to only 225 numbered copies, of which 180 were pre-subscribed (Berger A61; Leaf Book - Chalmers 215); this copy is not numbered and has "Binder's Sample #1, Rec'd 7/17/98" written in place of a number. Henry Morris' Bird & Bull Press has now published a new Dard Hunter book, which aims to "provide a reasonable taste of the original [The Life Work], sufficient perhaps to appreciate the unstinting quality of the artistry and uncommon skill that was lavished on this work," and to provide additional material, including some on Dard Hunter II. The introduction by Mr. Morris is followed by Dard Hunter II's account of the writing of his father's biography, followed in turn by Dard Hunter III's short account of the life of Dard II, with color plates. Dard Hunter & Son documents Hunter's early Roycroft days, studies in Vienna, stained-glass windows, first paper mill in Marlborough, NY, early watermarks, typefounding experiments, the move to "Mountain House," brief venture into large-scale hand papermaking, later moulds and watermarks, and his publications. Each topic is complemented by appropriate illustrations. There are three tipped-in-plates with 55 color reproductions of swatches of marbled and paste papers done by Hunter in his Vienna days, three samples (reprintings by Bird & Bull) of 2-color page or cover designs done for the Roycrofters, photos of the Marlborough Mill and a reduced-size reprint of a Dard Hunter poster drawing of the mill, original leaves from various publications, a bound-in sample of paper made by Dard Hunter and two by his son, tipped-in photos of Dard Hunter demonstrating papermaking at MIT in 1946, and a tipped-in facsimile of a page of notes made by Dard Hunter while visiting an English paper mill. The book concludes with a ten-page facsimile of the journal kept by Dard Hunter II while writing the Life Work. In all, there are about seventy individual text illustrations or facsimiles, twenty or so tipped-in plates, and sixteen printings or reprintings by the Hunters and print reproductions by Bird & Bull. This work is set in Ehrhardt type and printed on Frankfurt mould made paper at Bird & Bull. The multi-talented Dard Hunter (1883-1966), who eventually settled upon papermaking and the history of paper as his life's work, is a person of considerable interest in the recent history of the book arts. Relatively little, however, of a biographical nature has been published about him: chiefly his own autobiography of 1958, and the Life Work of Dard Hunter by his son, Dard Hunter II (1917-1989), itself an impressive work printed in Dard Hunter II's own type, and produced in a very limited edition in the early 1980s. Loosely inserted in this copy is a folded printed title page from Hunter's Old Papermaking in China and Japan and two photographs, one shoping Henry Morris reading a book and the other a photo of Dard Hunter's portrait. Also includes a prospectus.

Faksimile Verlag, Luzern / München - 1998. PETITES PRI RES OF RENEE DE FRANCE * * * The Petites Prieres was intended for the religious education of the young princess Renee de France. It was probably given to Rene as a gift on the occasion of the wedding of her sister Claude, when she was crowned Queen of France. * * * Since Rene was not opposed to Protestantism, almost all of her books were burned by the inquisition in 1554. One of the few works that escaped the irretrievable destruction was her Petites Prieres. The book escaped this catastrophe only narrowly. Yet the disaster took its course in 1994 on the occasion of an exposition in the Abbey of Montecassino. There, the manuscript was stolen and has never surfaced since! Luckily the Petites Prieres was entirely captured photographically shortly before. This was the basis to create facsimiles which could preserve this treasure for the public. * * * Title: Petites Prieres of Renee de France * Owner / Shelf mark: ?.U.2.28=lat. 614 (now lost) ? All text pages are decorated with the finest coloured and gilded floral ornaments. The sheer wealth of floral variety makes the manuscript a true sea of flowers. 112 painted and gilded initials enable the text to be structured in both Latin and French * Patron: Renee of France (1510-1574), daughter of the king of France, Louis XII * Former Owners / Provenance: Maitre de Claude, Queen of France.
