Deluxe Issue, one of 12 copies in a design binding and case by Marilyn Bonaventure, signed by Crumley, Lise McClendon (author of the introduction), Phil Parks (illustrator), and Marilyn Bonaventure (binder) on the limitation page. Fine in a Fine clamshell case. The Mexican Pig Bandit" is a mystery short story featuring Crumley's best-known character C.W. Sughrue, and bridges an important gap between Crumley's novels. A transitional story, it shows Sughrue's transformation from private detective into a Montana badass, and also explains the reason behind traveling south of the border. The story was later anthologized in Otto Penzler's "Murder and Obsession" (1999). Easily the most limited volume in Crumley's body of work.

        Seven Trees

Kat Ran Press, (North Andover, MA) 1998 - 30 pages. These seven autobiographical poems presented chronologically are all built around images and memories of trees. The first poem is inspired by the author's family tree. The other poems trace her childhood among saman trees in the Dominican Republic, adulthood among the maples, elms and weeping willows in her adopted homeland, and the locusts around her home and sanctuary in Vermont. In the final poem, ?Last Trees?, Alvarez imagines her own death and links the themes of the previous six poems neatly together. The book is a wonderful example of the book arts, combining strong poems with lithographs by the noted painter Sara Eichner?Alvarez's stepdaughter?printed on impossibly delicate Japanese paper and mounted following each poem. The images, abstractions of trees, do not directly illustrate the poems but instead enhance the meaning by reflecting the emotion or feeling of the text. The book is bound into boards covered with handmade flax paper died with walnut hulls to give an impression of bark or wood (a play on the language of book binding?the boards). This is a substantial volume, roughly 11 by 16 inches, giving enough space for the poems to be printed without line breaks and each entirely on one page. Laid into a clamshell box with the title inset on the front. Now for the statistics, the text is the English Monotype cutting of Eric Gill's classic Perpetua; the paper is Czech, handmade by the Velke Losiny mill; the binding was completed by the Thistle Bindery. Published in an edition of 65 copies, of which 50 were for sale. First edition (first printing). Fine in a fine folding presentation case. Signed by Alvarez and Eichner.         Sophie

Bristol, England:: Ral Veroni,, 1998.. Edition of 15. 22 x 21 cm with 120 pages laser printed on Transmarque paper of 110 gms. Housed in a portfolio box bound in gold paper with the title embossed in blue on the front. Made at the Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of the West of England, Bristol. A deliberately disorienting combination of Lynn Ward and Julio Cortázar. This portfolio of Veroni's drawings, printed on transparent paper, chronicles a turbulent time in the artists' life (see his comments below). Textless. The format encourages reader/viewer interaction to construct meaning. The Colophon provides some hints. The comments below help even more. Veroni: "I like the idea that the viewer can play with the order and combination of the images. The concept of the book was that of playing with a number of multi-layered designs, gaining in depth and changing, in turn, with a series of suggestive-and not quite fixed-meanings. At the same time I wanted to keep a certain track of the original order I gave to the images. "The book was made in Bristol in 1998 after falling in love with a French girl called Sophie. I was captivated. I found it ironic that a woman with a name meaning wisdom could make me lose my head.... I couldn't sleep for many nights and the drawings I did during those days were my way to achieve some kind of catharsis. I put all together within the book: mixed reading of Greek myths along with the legend of Orpheus plus my own feelings and interpretations. No wonder ambiguity and confusion remains throughout its pages.

What Was the Name of That Nymph Again?, or Greek and Roman Studies Recalled. Contained within Pegasus Magazine. The Journal of University of Exeter Dept. of Classics and Ancient History, Issue 41: 1998

University of Exeter Press 1998., 1998. FIRST (and only) EDITION. A scarce early essay on Greek mythology from the later author of the popular Harry Potter series, appearing on pp.25-7. This article, demonstrating the author's interest in fantasy and folklore, was written whilst J.K. Rowling was at university, and was first published in this student journal shortly after her breakthrough novel in 1997. It was the author's first non-Harry Potter- related writing to be published and is exceptionally scarce, only intended for circulation at Exeter University. Publisher's printed orange wraps, fine condition. Together with Newsletter No.10 from the Classics department, which congratulates Joanne Rowling on 'her marvellously imaginative children's novel'. Destined to become a major JK Rowling rarity which will be lacking from many Harry Potter collections.

A Catalog of the Thirty-Three Miniature Designer Bindings of You Can Judge a Book by Its Cover.

Pico Rivera Kater-Crafts Bookbinders 1998 - Oblong quarto. (76)pp. Copy number one of six signed by the binders and everyone involved in the publication of the book. This was Mel Kavin's personal copy, which he had specially bound by Michael Wilcox, and it was the only copy of the six to have received a designer binding. Photocopies of the correspondence between Kavin and Wilcox are included with the book. In a letter dated November 28, 2001, Wilcox explains his design concept: "My design (intended to be decorative) is about reading texts.and binding texts into books (precisely thirty-three of them, in this case)." What Wilcox does here is to transform the concept of turning ideas from the text, and the binder's reaction to that text, into physical objects. At the lower inside corners of both covers sits the text, which is symbolized by a small rectangular light brown gilt-framed onlay with lines. Radiating out from these two onlays are gilt rules that terminate in thirty-three book forms within gilt circles surrounded by small geometric shapes. In between the text and the finished books are small nebulae of these geometric shapes tooled in gilt, various colored onlays symmetrically arranged in a semi-circular pattern. Further along, the lines cross a wider field of various shapes formed of gray onlays. All these pieces represent the choices binders make when deciding on a design: tooling, color, and shape. Wilcox continues the visual theme on the turn-ins, creating a running border of text and book shapes. As with all of Wilcox's designs, this binding reflects the thought, care, and craftsmanship for which he is widely regarded. Extremely fine, housed in a stout cloth clamshell box.
