MEXICO CITY: PHOTOGRAPHS BY HELEN LEVITT - Rare Pristine Copy of The Limited Slipcased Edition: Numbered And Signed by Helen Levitt

New York City, NY: The Center For Documentary Studies/W. W. Norton & Company, 1997 - 1st Printing. Signed. 184 pages. Published in 1997. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the finest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Slipcased Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Helen Levitt and Marvin Hoshino: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Helen Levitt. Essay, "Helen's Other City", by James Oles, the American photography scholar/historian who has lived in Mexico City since 1991. Selected Exhibitions, Bibliography, and Acknowledgments appended at the end. Matching gray slipcase with gilt titles on one side. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name held in 1997 and 1998. Presents Helen Levitt's "Mexico City". Indelible photographs of the eponymous, tragic city. In 1941, Helen Levitt spent several months in Mexico, photographing the city and its inhabitants. Her work joins the best by such photographers as Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who all felt an urgent need to come to grips with the city. Without sentimentality, Helen Levitt captured the conflicts and juxtapositions that announced Mexico City's entry into the 20th century. "These images stand as crucial documents of an urban world caught in the throes of modernity, of a people, and of a nation that was leaving the village behind" (James Oles). To show just that, Levitt personally selected the photographs in this collection, from among the hundreds she took, to represent her body of work on her other city, a searing contrast to her beloved New York, of which she has deservedly been called its visual Poet Laureate. An absolute "must-have" title for Helen Levitt collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by Helen Levitt. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 67 duotone plates. Helen Levitt's "A Way of Seeing" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HELEN LEVITT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0393045498.         Mural]: Mothership Connection. Parliament-Funkadelic

      - Large mural. Approximately 72" wide by 36" high. Luminous or florescent paint, probably acrylic-based (similar to DayGlo paint) in many colors on large 1/2" Weyerhaeuser plywood. Signed in the lower right quadrant: "Chet Williams, 12-11-78." Corners a little rounded, some rubbing to a few sections, grain of the plywood shows through a bit, overall very good. A spectacularly colorful accomplished representation of the band, staged in front of the giant Mothership, and with a cerise ray gun blast bisecting the painting horizontally. Parliament and The Funkadelics were two separate bands that played concurrently, both under the direction of George Clinton, and both with roughly the same complement of musicians. By the late 1970s, the term Parliament-Funkadelic became the catchall phrase for the creative and increasingly uncatagorizable music project. The wildly creative members of Parliament-Funkadelic, who played a mixture of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, and jazz improvisations, were an important influence on post-disco and post-punk music, as well as a seminal influence on hip hop music, and in some sense have become a genre unto themselves. In the years following their commercial decline, brought about by a number of reasons, hip hop DJs began to extensively sample P-Funk beats, which helped to reinvigorate the band, with the subsequent re-issue of their catalog and the reconstitution of the band. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. This spectacular vernacular mural pretty perfectly captures the P-Funk lineup at their most creative, as well as during their most commercially successful iteration, when they evolved the entire P-Funk mythos, complete with references to science-fiction, and featuring their prop "Mothership" that was central to their touring show. A unique artifactual evocation of the P-Funk phenomenon. We can find out nothing conclusive about the artist, but apparently this was found in southern Connecticut.

A Wavering Grace: a Vietnamese Family in War and Peace.

1997 - Viking. 1997. 8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A fine copy. First edition. "Gavin Young first visited Vietnam in 1965 at the time of the American invasion. He was to spend most of the next ten years there as a reporter for the Observer, but also as a kind of honorary citizen and adopted son, forming unusually close ties with the 'delightful, infinitely patient Vietnamese people' and with one family in particular. In a Wavering Grace one of our most distinguished travel writers offers us an unusual and affecting memoir, a unique view of a tragic land. It is the tale of one man's relationship with a people and a place, but even more it is the tale of one indomitable family, whose own lives read like a chronicle of twentieth century Vietnamese history." With a quantity of related material including three typed drafts of the work, dated May to July 1996 with manuscript corrections and amendments by Gavin Young, Peter Carson and Gritta Weil (some on post-its). Each draft is c. 200pp. typed on the rectos only. Also with various typed drafts of chapters from the book, annotated in manuscript by Young and Weil (c. 600pp). With a folder containing an annotated set of page proofs of the early chapters, with editorial notes and correspondence between the author, Gritta Weil, and the publisher discussing corrections, rights payments, advance puffs etc. Some of the correspondence is faxed and therefore fading. Provenance: From the estate of Gritta Weil (1924-2009), a refugee from Germany, who worked for The Observer from 1945 to 1984, and was a close friend of the travel writer and journalist for the same paper, Gavin Young (1928-2001), who is most remembered for his 1977 book Return to the Marshes, based on his life with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq. This was followed by an account of his travels in Mesopotamia in 1980. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(vgl. Traxler-Gerlich Nadja, Henri Cartier-Bresson zum 95. Book has light bumping to the top of the boards and light handling marks to the top of the jacket. Jacket also has a "Signed" sticker on the front cover, else clean and tight. This book is signed not by the authors, but rather by two survivors of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. The other signature is by mountaineer David Breashears, who was in the midst of making the IMAX film Everest when the blizzard hit and killed eight people.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, four volume limited and numbered edition of 1997, one of only 75 sets issued thus

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Second Edition of the Oxford Text. Hardcover. This is a beautifully fine set of the handsome first, limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text – the first edition of the full text of Seven Pillars of Wisdom ever available to the public. This is hand-numbered set #261 of 752 total and only 75 “Extra-illustrated Sets” issued thus, with an additional illustrations portfolio and specially sized slipcase. Accompanying this set is an archive of documents, including original prospectus for the edition and the Extra-illustrated sets, original order documents, and correspondence between the original purchaser and the publisher. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence was famously conflicted about publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new draft in 1920 in a punishing burst of writing that was followed by an equally brutal editing process. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled "Revolt in the Desert". Only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, was the text of the Subscribers' Edition finally published for general public circulation. However, the fuller "Oxford Text" - a third longer than the shortened text which became so famous - would remain suppressed until this 1997 limited edition. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. "In historical and biographical terms its most important form is the 1922 text” which is not only 84,600 words longer than previously published versions, but “also, as literature, closer to Lawrence's usual style of writing." Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets. Of these, 650 sets were issued in the handsome cloth and paper bindings featured here, but only 75 of these 650 included an extra matching portfolio containing a proof set of the Seven Pillars portraits. The three volumes plus the portfolio of proof portraits were issued in a cloth-covered slipcase. The two text volumes are beautifully bound in quarter cream cloth over grey paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels. The Illustrations volume and Illustrations portfolio are both bound in matching full cloth. The three volumes feature dust jackets in a style evocative of the original 1935 British trade edition of the shorter text. These Extra-illustrated Sets were issued to subscribers only and otherwise available only with the very limited number of full-leather sets. The publisher also supplied a specifically-sized dark red cloth slipcase able to house both the three volumes and the portfolio. Condition is fine, the books and dust jackets nearly perfect, the slipcase only lightly scuffed. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a.
