A simulation of a one of a kind collaborative book made during the period 1967-68. The original was passed back and forth for about a year - each artist adding, subtracting, and editing each other's work.       (GOSSAGE, JOHN). Gossage, John & Thomas Weski. JOHN GOSSAGE: THERE AND GONE / ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS - THE NEAR-UNIQUE DELUXE SIGNED LIMITED BOXED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. Signed with an Original Photograph. Berlin: Nazraeli Press, 1997. First Deluxe Edition. 4to. Cloth in Dust Jacket, Boxed. Photography Monograph. Fine/Fine. 160pp + 16pp, 124 duotone illustrations. Text in English and German. This is the lovely hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with the 1997 John Gossage exhibition entitled "There and Gone" that travelled from Hannover's Sprengel Museum to Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College. It features reproductions of each of the photographs shown, and includes a sixteen page insert containing a transcribed interview between Gossage and curator Thomas Weski. According to Chris Pichler, Nazraeli Press planned to produce a deluxe boxed edition of one hundred and forty-four copies with an ISBN separate from the trade edition - each retailing for nine hundred and fifty dollars and containing a single unique photograph from the one hundred and forty-four images in the book. Ten clamshell boxes were fabricated in Japan, and John Gossage agreed to produce and supply the prints as orders were received. Unfortunately, the first two copies ordered were returned to Nazraeli by the purchasers who objected to Mr. Gossage's insistence on splashing a few drops of coffee on the mat of each of the original prints as an artistic gesture, and the entire project was then scrapped. Only between three and five vintage completed copies of this near-unique edition exist. A most handsome example of the exceedingly uncommon unnumbered deluxe edition BOLDLY SIGNED by John Gossage in black ink on the first preliminary housed in the publisher's debossed and silkscreened black clamshell box, as issued. Laid in is a 4 x 2 3/4" black and white silver gelatin print of a woman's silhouette at the water's edge (reproduced on page 39 of the book) mounted on a 10 x 8" sheet of board SIGNED "John Gossage 1996 / p 39" in pencil on the verso, as issued. It shows the small coffee splash to the board on the recto, which was the intent of the photographer. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-923922-50-7 Inventory Number: 022704&

The World Crisis (first abridged and revised edition)

This is the first abridged and revised edition of Churchill's monumental and acclaimed history of World War I in the original first printing dust jacket - one of the most striking and rare dust jackets in the Churchill canon.  The front face of the yellow-tan dust jacket features a full-length, half-tone photograph of Churchill striding, in top hat and tails with walking stick in hand.  The rear cover features a smaller head and shoulders image of Churchill in the uniform of the South African Light Horse (set amid an advertisement for A Roving Commission).  Writing in 1997, Churchill expert Richard Langworth said of this dust jacket "I know of only two or three of these in existence."  We know of a few more than that, but certainly only a small number survive and very few collectors are able to own them.  This first abridged and revised edition is not simply an abridgement, but a genuine first edition in its own right; Churchill made significant revisions and added a new introduction and an entire new chapter on the Battle of the Marne.  Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition.  This copy is notable for condition as well as scarcity, being near-fine in a very good dust jacket.  The blue cloth binding is square, immaculately clean, and tight, with sharp corners and vivid spine gilt.  Searching for exterior flaws, we find only light shelf wear to the lower edge, barely perceptible mottling of the color at the lower front edge, and a fractional adhesion of some dust jacket paper fibers to the fore edge of the rear cover.  The contents remain bright and clean.  We find no spotting and even the untrimmed fore edges and top edge remain quite clean.  The sole previous ownership mark is a name, date, city, and price in faded ink written vertically along the ffep gutter: "Demuth Norman (Chicago) Jan 4 1936 $5.00".  The dust jacket is a noteworthy survivor.  It is unclipped, still bearing the original $5.00 front flap price and notably clean, with only slight soiling confined to the spine tail and the upper rear hinge.  Shelf presentation is particularly good, with the jacket spine only very slightly toned and highly complete, showing only fractional losses at the extreme spine ends.  The only two losses of note are at the bottom edge of the front face, these being a .75 x .75 inch triangle at the lower front hinge and .5 wide x .25 inch deep chip closer to the front flap fold.  There is also a .375 inch abrasion to Churchill's right leg.  The jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.5.a, Woods/ICS A31(ba.1), Langworth p.115.

The Easton Press, USA 1997 - SIGNED AND NUMBERED COPY 223 pages. Index. Signed copy #297 of 1,150. Includes certificate of authenticity. "Few Americans have influenced international affairs as profoundly as the author. As a scholar, theorist, teacher, best-selling author, and advisor to both Democratic, and Republican presidents, he has for over thirty years been one of the nation's premiere strategists. In this work he examines how America, as the world's only remaining superpower, can best preserve its global prominence in the post-Cold War World. His primary focus is the Eurasian landmass stretching from France to Korea - an area Dr. Brzezinski calls the "grand chessboard" on which the world's powers will struggle for political and economic advantage. Essential for policy-makers and citizens concerned with America's future." - from insert. All edges gilt. Gilt-decorated brown full-leather binding. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear.       New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 294 pages. The author&#39;s sixth novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Jose Saramago&#39;s "Ensaio sobre a Cegueira", his anti-totalitarian allegory/novel, in a felicitous English translation. It is the very last translation by Giovanni Pontiero, to whom the book is dedicated (together with Saramago&#39;s wife Pilar and daughter Violante). Saramago considered himself very lucky (rightly so) to have had two masterly English translators (Pontiero was succeeded by Margaret Jull Costa). By the most cruelly ironic twist of fate, Pontiero was already gravely ill when he was working on "Blindness". "He was translating &#39;Blindness&#39;, which he finished. Then he died. Toward the end, he himself started to go blind as a result of medication his doctors gave him. He had to choose between taking the medication, which would sustain him for a bit longer, and not taking it, which would create other risks. He chose, shall we say, to preserve his vision, and he was translating a novel about blindness. It was a devastating situation" (Jose Saramago). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. "He got ahead of us; he is ahead of us. His work belongs to our future" (Ursula K. LeGuin). The basis of the fine film adaptation by Fernando Meirelles, with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago&#39;s signature was the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn&#39;t signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago&#39;s achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. </B></i> Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151002517.

        Echoes of An Autobiography

New York: Doubleday, 1997. First edition. Octavo. Fine in near fine dust jacket. Signed by both Nobel Laureates Naguib Mahfouz and Nadine Gordimer, who contributed the foreword to this volume. Both signatures were obatined in person. Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988 for his status as one of the first contemporary writers of Arabic literature to explore themes of existentialism (Gordon, 2007). He published 34 novels, 350 short stories, dozens of movie scripts, and five plays over a 70-year career. Many of his works have been made into Egyptian and foreign films. Mahfouz&#39;s work describes the development of his country, Egypt, in the 20th-century but in a manner that combine the literary techniques of Eastern and Western literature, authors such as Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka. His stories are set in the densely populated urban areas of Cairo, and his characters are ordinary people who must cope with the modernization of society and the temptations of Western values.
