La Maison Martin Margiela (9/4/1615)

Rotterdam: Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, 1997. First Edition. Hardcover.. VG+. 8vo. 154pp. White raw edged cloth as issued. Numerous Colour and Black & White images. Text in English. With exhibition poster and booklet laid in. More images available on request. A real treat here! The impossible to find first book by Margiela, which accompanied the MMM show at Boijmans. Very much a conceptual project, with the team taking one piece from every collection since the beginning, reproducing it in white, cream and grey, and covering it with bacteria specially created for the show, which then grew, ate and changed the colours of the clothes during the duration of the exhibition. The book itself comprises 3 parts, firstly- archive photographs of the garments chosen, second- garment descriptions, diagrams, and the original press releases with space for notes, and the third part comprises the research into bacterias and micro organisms by collaborator Dr. van Egeraat, with numerous photographs and diagrams. Really brilliant, and extremely scarce.

        Pomegranate. Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild.

Editions de l'eau, [Reynes 1997 - One of 14 deluxe copies all on Hahnemuhle paper, each numbered and signed by Fainlight and Rothchild on the colophon with an original drawing and page of manuscript. In addition there were 28 regular copies , 8 hors commerce. In addition, there were 40 additional copies of the mezzotints editioned. Page size: 15-1/2" x 10-1/2". Bound: loose in original wrappers, housed in red publisher's slipcase, paper over boards. New. With mezzotints printed by the artist, Judith Rothchild, the text was printed by Albert Woda, the publisher, who also designed the layout. This is Judith Rothchild's first livre d'artiste. Noted poet Ruth Fainlight has contributed a moving poem using the imagery of pomegranates and its association with the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter to pose questions about the life process, aging, revisiting our youth, death and rebirth. Ms. Rothchild's pomegranates are rich and warm, almost supernaturally lit images -- always in pairs -- exposing its complicated fruit. The artist usually works in the pastel medium, using vibrant strong colors, usually still lifes, bringing life to inanimate objects with magical light. Encouraged by master engraver, Albert Woda, to work in mezzotints, Ms. Rothchild has created six haunting images to perfectly complement Ms. Fainlight's poem. See illustration.7 See an Image. Operative Zugangswege in der Neurochirurgie : zentrales und peripheres Nervensystem / Iradj Mohsenipour ... 305 farbige Zeichn. von Wolf-Eberhard Goldhahn

Stuttgart , New York : Thieme.

Washington D. C.: Nature Publishing Group, December 11,, 1997. [In] Nature Volume 390, Number 6660. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers. Mailing label to upper wrapper as often. Wrappers only very slightly rubbed. An excellent copy. First edition of the first paper describing successful quantum teleportation, the transmission of information using quantum entanglement, in which the quantum states of a pair of particles are linked so that a change in one alters the other, even at large distances. Quantum teleportation was first proposed theoretically in 1993 by a team led by the physicist and information theorist C. H. Bennett, and this paper marks the first time it was carried out successfully. Lead author Anton Zeilinger (1945– ) is now renowned for his work in this growing field, which promises to revolutionise communications and computing technology, and he and his team have achieved numerous other firsts, including the first quantum cryptography using entangled photons.

[Elevations and plans of pipe organs in 3 Paris churches and of pipe organs by Feillet].Paris, Jacques Chereau, [ca. 1700/50]. With 16 finely engraved elevations and plans of pipe organs, numbered 1-16. 3 works in 1 volume. Oblong small 1mo (ad 1) & large folio (ad 2-3). Early 19th-century half red roan (sheepskin), Stormont on shell marbled sides.

Fine collection of 3 rare series of architectural prints, the third series (showing elevations and plans of existing and newly designed pipe organs) is especially rare. The first series, with 12 large plans of classical gardens, is dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary, Joseph I in Vienna. Its title-print includes a beautiful bird's eye view of a palace and its gardens. The title describes the designer of the garden plans, Georg Hätzl, as Royal art and pleasure gardener at Schönbrünn, near Vienna. The title-plate was engraved by Jakob Müller (ca. 1670-1703) in Augsburg. The palace does not appear to be either Schönbrunn or Hofburg. The second print series shows a splendid arch with columns and sculpture, bearing the title on a large rectangular panel and the imprint on a scrollwork cartouche. It is followed by 15 beautiful elevations and plans of Royal summer houses and gardens, Princely country houses and gardens, large garden halls, etc., and includes a splendid Royal building that could be used as a Town Hall or Court House as well. The extremely rare third print series shows 16 elevations and plans of pipe organs in their architectural context. It was sold and presumably engraved by the copperplate engraver Jacques Chereau (1688-1776) in Paris. The name "Chereau" appears with the address ("Paris ... ruë St. Jacques au Grand St. Remy") on plates 2 and 11, and other engravings with the same address identify him as Jacques. Each print has a title engraved on the plate, but there is no general title. The series includes a plan and two elevations of the large and richly decorated organ of the Abbaye de St. Victor, a plan and two elevations of the organ of the Church of St. Geneviève, and a plan and two elevations of the richly decorated organ of the Abbaye de Saint Germain-des-Prés, all at Paris, and 7 plans and elevations of pipe organs drawn by a certain "Feillet", whom we have not identified. With a bookplate on the front paste-down indicating that the book came from the library of the late Isaac La Lau and was given by his son to the society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix" in Leiden, and with the society's label on the front board. In very good condition and with generous margins, with only an occasional minor stain or fold. Binding slightly rubbed. The prints in the second series are bound out of order.

Amsterdam, Cornelis Danckerts the younger, [ca. 1696]. Royal folio (44.5 x 29.5). With 8 double-page engraved plates (plate size mostly ca. 29.5 x 35.5 cm) by Bastiaan Stopendaal after the designs of Herbert Kramer, showing plans and elevations of the house designed for Pieter Reael and his wife Maria Eleonora Huydekoper and the surrounding water and drawbridge; a half-page engraved coats-of-arms of Reael and his wife on the back of the dedication page; and a woodcut decorated initial. Modern half maroon goatskin morocco, marbled sides.

BAL 796 note; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemmish) XXVIII, p. 132, 25; Munnig Schmidt & A.J.A.M. Lisman, Plaatsen aan de Vecht en de Angstel (1997), p. 16; on Reael and the house: Elias 173; J. Broerstra, "Verdwenen buitenplaatsen in Vreeland. De Nes", in: Jaarb. Oudheidk. Genootsch. "Niftarlake", 1989, pp. 23-37. Rare first and only edition of an architectural print series of 3 elevations and 5 plans of the stately manor house "Huis te Nigtevecht" also known as "De Nes", designed by the Amsterdam architect Herbert Kramer (d. 1705). The house nearly fills a small square island in the Vecht river, near Vreeland, southeast of Amsterdam. One plan includes the surrounding water and the drawbridge that gave access to the house, and another shows the roof. The house was built in 1687 for Pieter Reael (1650-1701), Lord of Nigtevecht, after his 1683 marriage with Maria Eleonora Huydecoper (1658-1706), the daughter of the magistrate, burgomaster of Amsterdam and humanist Balthasar Huydecoper. Huis te Nigtevecht was torn down in 1829/30, so the present print series gives us our best record of its original form. Its large octagonal hall looking on to the garden is of special architectural interest, for it may be the earliest example of this form, which shows French influences. Otherwise it follows the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch manor house architecture and resembles "Oud-Poelgeest" (1667) near Leiden and "Trompenburg" (ca. 1675) in 's-Graveland. The 1719 Zegepraalende Vecht includes an engraving with a view of the house and its drawbridge by Daniel Stoopendael. The single letterpress leaf preceding the plates serves as title-page, but gives no title. It opens with the dedication to Pieter Reael and his wife, signed by the architect "Herbert Cramer, stads mr. metselaar en keurmeester van de gebakken steen over Amsterdam" (official master brick mason and inspector of brick for the city of Amsterdam). Although the last date mentioned in the text is 1688 and the plates must have been engraved before Stoopendael's death in 1693, Danckerts took occupancy at the address in the imprint only when he married the daughter of the late Albertus Magnus and his widow in 1696. He probably published the print series in or soon after that year, and clearly before Reael's death in 1701. The name HB Kramer has been supposed to refer to a Hendrick Kramer, but is almost certainly the Herbert who signed the dedication and the man of that name buried in Amsterdam in 1705. He is likely the "voornaam liefhebber, H.K." who drew the illustrations for the undated Architecture van verscheidene nieuwe poorten; óf deuren van huisen, engraved and published by Danckerts from the same address. In very good condition, with only some browning near some of the folds (from the guards of an earlier binding) and occasionally along the edges.

Ground breaking quantification and analysis of ballistics for muzzle-loading muskets, rifles, carbines, and pistols, drawn from a mass of newly-discovered 19th century data: accuracy of fire (unique statistics and many graphs); muzzle velocity and muzzle energy; rates and causes of misfires (flintlock and percussion); ... Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, three volume limited and numbered edition of 1997

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Second Edition of the Oxford Text. Hardcover. As new/As new. This is a pristine, as-new set of the handsome first Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text. This set is #580 of 752 total and 650 copies issued thus. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to famously lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled "Revolt in the Desert". It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, the fuller "Oxford Text" - a third longer than the shortened text which became so famous - would not be republished until 1997. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of this Oxford Text. Of these, 650 sets were issued thus. The production value is excellent and aesthetically appealing. The large volumes measure 11.25 x 9 inches. The two text volumes are printed on acid-free stock and bound in quarter cream Rohalbleinen cloth with grey Fabriano Tiziano paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels, head and foot bands, green top edge stain, and green endpapers. The Volume I rear pastedown features a pocket bearing two folding, color maps. The third volume is Illustrations, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars Portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 81 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence formed and presented to the Imperial War Museum. The Illustrations volume is bound in full cream Rohalbleinen cloth with limp boards, gilt spine, and illustrated endpapers. All three volumes are issued in uniform dust jackets and housed in a dark red cloth slipcase. This set is in pristine, as-new condition, clearly unread with no discernible flaws or wear noted. The dust jackets are fitted with removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a

Flashpoints: Selected Images of Gilles Peress (Portfolio of 11 Signed Silver Gelatin Prints)

1997: Double Elephant Editions, 1993. 1st Edition . No Binding. Fine. This is a portfolio of 12 signed silver prints of some of the most famous photographs of Gilles Peress entitled Flashpoints: Selected Images of Gilles Peress produced by Double Elephant Editions, New York in 1997. The portfolio has received critical acclaim and has been displayed in numerous exhibitions over the past decade and features photographs from Telex Iran, The Silence and Farewell to Bosnia as well as his most famous photograph, Bloody Sunday, Derry. Commenting on the New York exhibition, famed art critic Jung Joon Lee stated, From Rwanda to Bosnia and Tehran to Belfast, Peress\'s signature Magnum photographs show dramatic moments of disaster. Three photographs depict the conflicts in Northern Ireland during the 1970s and early 1980s. In Peress\'s photograph Bottom of William Street One Minute before the British First Parachute Regiment Opened Fire, Killing Thirteen Civilians--an Event Known as Bloody Sunday, Derry, Ireland, 1972, one sees the very moment before tragedy strikes. Frozen in time, we see the panic of the crowd, the heavily armored soldiers among them, and the devastated children. The heightened tension he is able to capture in these dramatic moments conjures up terror, one of the effects of the sublime. The sublime gives beauty to the moment of atrocity and makes the horror digestible for the viewer. In the exhibition\'s press release, Peress says, I\'m gathering evidence for history, so that we remember. The carefully composed narratives in Peress\'s photographs do indeed echo his statement by taking on a didactic nature. In presenting us with images of collective suffering, his photographs give us a lesson on humanity\'s past mistakes. The photographs measure approximately 13 x 19 inches and are individually matted with Peress\' signature, title and date, in pencil, on the verso and housed in a silver-stamped black clamshell case that also contains a printed title and plate list. Both the clamshell case and photographs are in FINE condition.
