        ARMS TRADE.

Tempe, Arizona:: Cabbagehead Press,, 1996.. Edition of 150. 8 x 10" closed (folded); 8 x 20" single sheet extended. Handmade paper from shredded paper currency with rag pulp including clothing from the victims named. Handset types used include Stymie, Clarendon, Baskerville, and Neuland. Metal relief engravings and woodcuts created for the images and printed by John Risseeuw at his Cabbagehead Press in Tempe, Arizona. Signed and numbered by the artist. Risseeuw created a piece about the world arms trade, printed on paper made from clothing of victims of armed conflict and recycled currency from the top 10 arms-exporting nations. John Risseeuw, Content-Specific Handmade Paper in Prints and Artist Books: "I started with an appropriate quote about arms sales, then printed a list of the top ten arms exporting nations between 1990 and 1994. The U.S. was (and is to this day), to my regret, the top exporter by far. I began a list of arms sold as well as some woodcut and engraved images. Inside the piece, the facts continue about the value of arms sold, the list of arms, and more quotes and images. Included within the page are stories of victims of armed conflict, from South Africa, Iraq, and elsewhere. Finally, at the bottom, the colophon tells you that the paper you are holding was made from the paper currency of the top ten arms exporting nations (U.S., Russia, Germany, UK, France, China, The Netherlands, Italy, Czech Republic, and Switzerland) mixed with clothing from the victims of armed conflict named above. For example, a papermaker friend in South Africa knew a woman whose sister had been murdered by the Security Police in 1985. She sent me a cotton skirt once belonging to her sister and it was pulped for this paper. A colleague at my university in the mathematics department is an Iraqi Kurd, who was chased out of northern Iraq with the other people of his family and village when the Iraqi army began shelling it. The paper contains clothing from people killed in that action sent from relatives who are still in exile in southern Turkey. "Repeatedly, I have found that the impact of this piece is increased when people read about, or are told, the content of the paper. Some, in shock, have dropped it, unable to bear the weight of the connection linking arms, money, and death. It is so simple, making the paper from these materials, yet the piece becomes a conceptual whole that is much more powerful. It has a wholeness like that of the farm keepsake - a satisfying unity and rightness - making the art into an object for deeper and further consideration, rather than merely a representation of an idea. The paper is not merely a substrate holding representative marks; it becomes something greater. A friend calls this Symbolic Paper, but I think it may be more than that.

London and Boston: Faber and Faber, 1996. FIRST EDITION. This special presentation binding displays one of the major innovations developed by Philip Smith: the "maril onlay," a concentrated arrangement of a great many extremely small multicolored bits of scrap leather in an embedded picture. This same design feature has been used on a large number of Smith bindings, including some of his most famous works. The binding notes tipped in here describe the artisan's process in great detail, even explaining how a printing mistake necessitated the open back design, and also record the exhibitions at the British Library and the Bibliotheca Wittockiana where this work was displayed, and the issue of the "New Bookbinder" (vol. 17, 1997) in which it was featured. As a fellow of the Designer Bookbinders, Smith was regularly approached to create bindings for finalists for the Booker Prize, an annual tradition. "A Fine Balance" tells the story of the impact of the 1975-77 Indian political crisis known as "The Emergency" on two tailors, a widow, and an engineer whose lives are unexpectedly entwined. In addition to being shortlisted for the Booker Prize, it earned Indian-Canadian author Rohinton Mistry the prestigious Giller Prize in his adopted country. Even more lucratively for the author, it was selected for Oprah's Book Club in 2001.. 240 x 155 mm. (9 3/8 x 6 1/8"). 5 p.l., 614 pp. FIRST EDITION. DRAMATIC SKY BLUE AND BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO WITH MULTI-COLOR "MARIL" ONLAY BY PHILIP SMITH (signed in ink and dated October 1996 on rear pastedown), covers with complex maril inlays forming an impressionistic mountain range and river separating the light blue morocco "sky" above and the brown morocco "earth" below, the latter onlaid with a number of rounded black spots like boulders, eight brightly colored maril squares representing squares of the quilt described in the text scattered across the landscape; two black and one blue and black goatskin yokes across the spine, with painted stitching and paper quires showing through the openings between yokes, title blind-stamped on yoke at head, orange endpapers, head and fore edges painted and waxed, the head edge with a brightly colored quilt on a blue background, the fore edge with a continuation of the mountain design from the covers. Original pictorial dust jacket bound in. Booker Prize finalist presentation plate tipped onto the bound-in dust jacket spine. Binder's extensive notes tipped onto rear flyleaf. In mint condition.         Epistle of Rabbi Samuel]; [Epistola Samuelis]; [Title from incipit:] Hic Incipit Prohemium Unius Libelli Translati De Arabico In Latinum De Inductione Ad Fidem Catholicam Iudeorum A Quodam iudeo Confecto

Around the first half of the fifteen century - Manuscript in Latin. Large margins. Paper with unidentified watermark. Text in black ink, headings, initials and rubrications in red. With a note by later hand on title page, about Alfonsus: "Parisis per manum fratris Alfonciis". In modern half vellum binding. 20 leaves. Manuscript copy in Latin of the Epistle of Rabbi Samuel, one of the most influential anti-Jewish treatises of the middle ages. Allegedly translated from Arabic by the Spanish Dominican Hebraist and Arabist Alfonsus Bonihominis (d. 1353). Alfonsus writes in his introduction to the manuscript, that the Epistle was written after the year 1000 by Rabbi Samuel, a Jew of Fez in Morocco, to share the reasons with Rabbi Isaac, chief of the synagogue at Sujulmeca (Subiulmeta?), which led him to be baptized and convert to Christianity. According to Alfonsus it was originally written in Arabic because only a few Jews and even fewer Christians knew that language, thus the text could remain concealed for hundreds of years, and the Christians were not able to use it against Jews, until he found and translated it while he was the Bishop of Marrakech in 1338 or 1339. The Epistle itself, coming after this introduction. Most copies are divided into twenty-four, sometimes twenty-five sections. Other version of the work, like this copy, contains additional chapters. Since the Arabic original of the text, from which Alfonsus allegedly translated the Epistle, has never been found, it is more likely that he imitated other works in the genre and composed a new text himself, which ended up being among the most widely copied and printed anti-Jewish tracts of the later middle ages. Bibl.: Limor, O.: The Epistle of Rabbi Samuel of Morocco: A Best-Seller in the World of Polemics. In: Contra Iudaeos. Ancient and Medieval Polemics between Christians and Jews. Tübingen: J.C.B. Mohr, 1996. pp. 177-194. Insignificant wormholes to margin with no effect to text. Overall in fine condition. Manuscript in Latin. Large margins. Paper with unidentified watermark. Text in black ink, headings, initials and rubrications in red. With a note by later hand on title page, about Alfonsus: "Parisis per manum fratris Alfonciis".

THE WHITTINGTON PRESS A BIBLIOGRAPHY 1982-1993 With An Introduction By John Randle

Risbury, Herefordshire: The Whittington Press, June, 1996. NUMBERED FIRST AND LIMITED EDITION, one of only 80 copies bound in vellum and marbled boards and one of only a small number to include an extensive set of tipped-in specimen pages. Including the normal copies, there was a printing of only 380 copies in total. Included is a printed letter/order form with notations and salutation in hand from Rosalind Randle to the original owner. Handsomely printed on Zerkall mould-made papers, illustrated with engravings printed from woodblocks and tritone plates printed by DTD, and with the set of over 40 specimen pages, mostly from the original printings, which was not included in the 244 buckram bound copies. 4to, in the original binding by the Fine Bindery of half vellum over beautifully marbled paper covered boards, the spine panel trimmed and lettered in gilt, in the original slipcase. 179, [1], specimen leaves. A pristine and perfect as mint copy of this beautifully produced book. FIRST EDITION, VERY LIMITED ISSUE AND A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THIS MODERN FINE PRESS. The Whittington Press has, since 1971, been printing books by letterpress from type ('as God intended', the Reverand Bernard Roberts once remarked), in the Gloucestershire village of Whittington. The Press was begun by John and Rosalind Randle partly as the result of an early enthusiasm for Caslon type, Albion presses and hand-made papers, and partly because of a wish to escape from London publishing jobs at the weekend. The first book of the Press, Richard Kennedy's 'A Boy at the Hogarth Press' (1972), which took a year of weekends and holidays to print in an edition of 525 copies on an 1848 Columbian hand-press, proved to be that rare event in the private press world, a best seller, and encouraged the founders to make the Press a full-time activity in 1974. From 1972 to 1991 the Press’ home was at Manor Farm, Andoversford, a mile away from the presses at Whittington. Since 1972 they have printed, and nearly always published, some 250 books, including the renowned annual review for printers and bibliophiles, Matrix (‘by far the finest periodical of the book arts of the twentieth century, surpassing even the seven-volume Fleuron issued in the 1920s’), which is now in its thirty-fifth year. The Press has received numerous awards for its printing and publishing, including THE AMERICAN PRINTING HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION’S AWARD for Matrix, the first time APHA’S INSTITUTIONAL AWARD has gone to a private press. The Press has a varied list, which can be best described as belles lettres, and includes books with and about wood-engravings, bibliographies of other presses, type specimens, diaries, pochoir (stencil) illustration, and much else. One common theme is illustration, nearly always printed from the original block, plate or stencil (‘things, not pictures of things’, as Eric Gill once said).

1996. Signed. PULLMAN, Philip. The Golden Compass. WITH: The Subtle Knife. WITH: The Amber Spyglass. WITH: Lyra's Oxford. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1996-2003. Together, four volumes. Octavo, original half navy cloth gilt (Books I, II), illustrated paper boards (Book III), original dust jackets. Lyra's Oxford: 12mo, original pictorial red cloth, mounted cover illustration. $2500.First American editions of Pullman's celebrated trilogy—the second two books signed by Pullman on the title pages—together with the companion volume, Lyra's Oxford.A former schoolteacher and accomplished playwright, Pullman followed several historical and realistic novels with this literate, sophisticated series, ""perhaps the most highly acclaimed work of fantasy for young adults published in the 1990sÂ… The Dark Materials series is filled with moral ambiguity rather than clear-cut didacticism, and readers as well as [protagonist] Lyra must grapple with the difficult questions raised by the story"" (Fantasy and Horror 7-311). ""InitiallyÂ… [Pullman] simply planned to infuse his story with Miltonian atmosphereÂ… Soon, however, Milton's theme, the Fall of Man, crept into the novelÂ… [Pullman explains,] 'My story resolved itself into an account of the necessity of growing up, and a refusal to lament the loss of innocence'"" (The New Yorker). The final installment, The Amber Spyglass, became the first children's novel ever to win the Whitbread Book of the Year Award (2001). The Golden Compass first published in Britain in 1995 as Northern Lights; other volumes published in Britain in the same years, under the same titles. Text of Lyra's Oxford with slightest toning to edges. A fine and desirable set, signed in two volumes.

One of the true classics of mountaineering literature. A fine copy, in the original cloth slipcase, also in fine condition.

        Citizen Sidel

1996. KLEIN, William and CHARYN, Jerome. Citizen Sidel. No place: (Coromandel Express, 1996). Oblong folio, signatures loose as issued in paper portfolio and original clamshell box. $12,500.Signed limited edition, number 82 of only 80 copies signed by both Klein and Charyn, with six exhibition-size vintage gelatin silver prints of New York, each print numbered and signed by Klein, and mounted on Arches paper, in original clamshell box.William Klein and Jerome Charyn each grew up Jewish in tough New York neighborhoods whose “great hero,” in CharynÂ’s words, “was always the local tough who never survived his own childhoodÂ… it was like Sophocles in the Bronx” (“Interview,” Center for Book Culture). Both would leave New York for Paris, then return and use their respective arts to explore New YorkÂ’s mythical qualities. Klein sought a way of compelling his “photographs to reveal the harshness of life on the New York streets, and he realized that the way to do so was to cultivate in himself a killer instinct for pictures as ferocious as the primal emotions he wanted to betray in his subjects” (Frizot, 644). The text by Charyn accompanying KleinÂ’s photographs, in two columns in French and English, describes a day in the political campaign of Isaac Sidel, the police detective at the center of a critically-praised series of novels. Charyn is a writer who “has made [New York City] his universe and has turned it into something entirely his own” (Washington Post). In 1963 Klein “was named one of the most important photographers in the history of the medium” (McDarrah & McDarrah, 261). As the publisher notes in the laid-in booklet, these “photographs can not be sold as original prints elsewhere than in this edition.” CharynÂ’s full-length novel Citizen Sidel was published in 1999. A beautiful high spot in modern photography. Fine condition.
