[Inscribed Linoleum Cut Print of:] "ST. STEPHEN CHURCH, ACOMA PUEBLO."

[Roswell, NM (?): , nd]. [Roswell, NM (?), nd]. Original linoleum cut print, in black on khaki tan stock with cross-hatch texture Image size 7.5 x 10 cm, plus margins. Affixed with tape along extreme top margin into linen covered mat. A beautiful linocut rendering by Horgan of the San Esteban del Rey Mission, at Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. Horgan has inscribed the print, in pencil, in the lower margin: "St Stephen Church - Acoma Pueblo [unique print] Paul Horgan." The print is unfortunately not dated, but Horgan's handwriting conforms to that of his middle years. This print was adapted and reproduced as the cover design for Horgan's 1995 Memorial Service Booklet. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, novelist and biographer Horgan's strong association with the American Southwest has its roots in his early residence in New Mexico. His illustrative work and field sketches, usually in watercolor, are well known and have been utilized in his own work as well as the subject of exhibitions and books by others. This example of his simple but highly effective ventures into printmaking is likely the most desirable of his handful of works in that medium.

        Soros on Soros.

New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.,, 1995. Staying Ahead of the Curve. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed by the author to Denis and Edna Healey on the front free endpaper, dated 25 August 1995. In this book, which comprises a series of expanded interviews with the influential investor and business magnate, Soros discusses his political and philosophical approaches to business and his philanthropic work with the Open Society Foundations. It is possible that the Healeys – he, the former British Labour Party Chancellor, and she, the writer and film-maker – met Soros through the elite Bilderberg Group, of which Denis was a founder and Steering Committee member. It is widely accepted, though not confirmed, that Soros is a member; others who have been associated with the Bilderberg Group include Bill Clinton, Angela Merkel, Rupert Murdoch, and David Rockefeller.

        John's Apples

Wisconsin: The Perishable Press, 1995. Wisconsin:: The Perishable Press,, 1995.. Edition of 125. 25 x 17 x 1 cm (9 7/8 x 6 3/4 x ½"); 102 page surfaces with 78 printed. Letterpress printed. Different papers used from Europe & Japan as well as paper handmade by Hamady's elder daughter in Wisconsin. Bound in chipboard with front board lacking linen cloth that covers spine and back board. Circular cutout on front board reveals a portion of a reproduction of a John Wilder painting ("Two golden delicious, one bitten"). Numbered by blind emboss on the colophon page. Hamady (7/6/1917): "These books ae pristine, as issued by the printer/publisher. Unlike the secondary market they are somehow of a better upbringing. Justamorphing (the) space (in) exhibition catalog (James Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy, 7 October through November 20, 2005): "Thirteen paintings by John Wilde, twelve poems by Reeve Lindbergh: a book ostensibly for children, especially those of well-to-do graphic designers. This book physically and visually shows how books come to be, from ideas to alphabets to words and pictures in an unshrouded bound structure. As usual, this book breaks new ground in the genre in ways anathema to chaste bibliopundits. To the receptive mind it should evoke pleasant contrasts between the measured austere and playful parameters essential to our child's eye. "Again, the press-numbered edition ... juxtaposes the antiquated technology of hand printing with the state-of-the-art six-color Heidelberg. Machine, hand, eye, heart, and mind are intermixed in a very unusual revelation of process."Reeve Lindberg, the daughter of aviator-authors Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, is a writer of personal stories and children's literature. Her work has appeared in a number of periodicals and magazines including The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, and the Washington Post. John's Apples features twelve of Lindberg's poems. "It's ostensibly a book of poetry with paintings of apples, but more than that, it is a book that shows the stages by which it was put together. … The poems are set run-on as blocks of prose, then spaced out properly and printed, and then at the back of the book allowed to decompose and pie [sic] on the press (a pretty neat trick from a technical point of view). The paintings are shown as a folded signature from the offset-printer complete with color bars and trim marks." ("Life & Death in Driftless, Wisconsin" by Alastair Johnston)John Wilde (1919-2006), Wisconsin Visual Artists website [accessed 7/12/2o17]: "Wilde was well-known as a painter, master of silverpoint, occasional printmaker, renowned draftsman, illustrator, and sometime writer. Many readers probably studied with him at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he taught from 1948-1982 (two of his most well-known students were Bruce Nauman and Wynn Chamberlain). For over sixty years, Wilde's paintings and drawings have been among the most powerful, startling, and gorgeous objects to emerge from Wisconsin. Wilde remained in Wisconsin and helped shape the state's cultural identity. "Yet Wilde was never simply a Wisconsin or Midwestern artist. His work is among the strongest of his generation and its impact on American art is only now beginning to be assessed by a generation of art historians rethinking modernism."Among the paintings by Wilde in John's Apples are "Five early redbirds"; "Two apples of love"; "Four Dolgo crabs"; and "Two Thalman sweets with a hinder light.

John's Apples Illustrated by John Wilde

Machine, hand, eye, heart, and mind are intermixed in a very unusual revelation of process." Reeve Lindberg, the daughter of aviator-authors Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, is a writer of personal stories and children's literature. The paintings are shown as a folded signature from the offset-printer complete with color bars and trim marks." ("Life & Death in Driftless, Wisconsin" by Alastair Johnston) John Wilde (1919-2006), Wisconsin Visual Artists website [accessed 7/12/2o17]: "Wilde was well-known as a painter, master of silverpoint, occasional printmaker, renowned draftsman, illustrator, and sometime writer. His work is among the strongest of his generation and its impact on American art is only now beginning to be assessed by a generation of art historians rethinking modernism." Among the paintings by Wilde in John's Apples are "Five early redbirds"; "Two apples of love"; "Four Dolgo crabs"; and "Two Thalman sweets with a hinder light.

        Hwiangerddi

Gwasg Gregynog 1995 - 30x17cm, 66pp. With a hand-coloured illustration signed by Jac Jones to the frontispiece and title page spread, and a further fifteen drawings by Jones, two initial letters and titles printed in red. Copy C of 15 (plus two unnumbered) (367), bound in full blue goatskin by Alan Wood to a design by David Vickers, with a butterfly gold-blocked to the front cover and a flowering stalk gold-tooled to the backstrip, blue suede doublures, red silk endbands, in a drop-back box covered in light blue cloth with a butterfly blocked in black to the front, lined with blue felt with a blue leather title-label to the spine. A collection of nursery rhymes (literally 'lullabies') collected by Sir Owen M Edwards in a delightful and rarely-seen Gwasg Gregynog special binding. All of the Press's special bindings, just like their illustrious predecessors from the pre-war Gregynog Press, were issued in very small limitations between 15-20 copies. Because most of these were 'fully subscribed on announcement to a group of regular collectors' there are 'very few people who have actually seen a special binding from the Press' (Anthony Dowd, The Special Bindings of Gwasg Gregynog, 2004). Hwiangerddi is unique amongst the special bindings in two respects. Firstly, its design is subtly coordinated with the bindings for the two other plainer variants of the book (250 copies in ¼ cloth and 100 copies in quarter leather). A butterfly climbs a flower stalk on the cover of the cloth binding, a ladybird approaches it on the cover of the quarter leather binding, and finally it flies off in fright on the cover of the special binding, as here, with the vacated stalk appearing on the backstrip. Secondly, it is the only special binding which includes a feature beyond the binding alone to distinguish it from the ordinary edition, namely the hand-colouring of the frontispiece/title page illustration by Jac Jones, with his signature. Fine, in a Near Fine (a minimal sheen of dustiness) drop-back box. Dowd 'M' [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
