New York: Limited Editions Club, 1995. Hardcover. Fine in a Fine slipcase. Setsuko Ideta. Folio (14" x 17") bound in a lush violet Japanese book-binding cloth. First Edition in English of this mystical masterpiece by the supreme romanticist of the Meiji period (1868-1912) which coincided with Japan's emergence from a feudal society. The "pouch binding"--or Fukuro toji--is the traditional Japanese with pages securely "bound" across an open spine with thread in a pattern that suggests a delicate Japanese screen and with the traditional title strip on the cover. The format has been modified so that the spine is on the left, Western style, rather than the right. Illustrated with four paintings by Setsuko Ideta, wife of Balthus, that were converted into wood blocks by Keiji Shinohara in his California studio. These were then aligned and overlaid to print the images on hand-made Japanese mulberry paper. Copy #78 of 300 numbered copies SIGNED by Setsuko. Monthly Letter laid in.

        Al Aaraaf

[Sherman Oaks:] Livre d'Art by D'Ambrosio, 1995 One of fifty copies printed letterpress on Lana Royal Classic paper. Signed on the title-page by D'Ambrosio. Trapezoidal shape binding in quarter blue morocco and mirrored panel boards, housed with the original trapezoidal two-part display stand and cover with further mirrored paneling. . Octavo. Printed letterpress in black and purple with woodcut backgrounds in various colors, several pages with embossed margins. A fine copy. Based on the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe's discovery of what later would be termed a supernova?Al Aaraaf (a star that arose upon the night in a brilliant flash, stayed for a short while, and then disappeared), Edgar Allan Poe created this metaphysical communication of fleeting beauty. In it he juggles time and space between reality and fantasy. I had no recourse but to do the same. However, I did start with a basic premise, which is that when one passes a mirror, one can see one's image and the surrounding scene. Once past the mirror, one disappears from the view but the reflection of the surrounding scene continues: a visual presentation of the term 'evanescence.' During the period of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), all heavenly bodies were given Arabic names. The structure of the book, therefore, had to evoke that background, along with the spirit of a beautiful thing arising and then passing forever from view. Hence, I created a mirrored polybhedron with unintellible but real script that evokes Arabic writing (but not Arabic) banding its throat..." (Joseph D'Ambrosio in A Memoir of Book Design 1969-2000).

        X-Ray Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 4

San Francisco: Pneumatic Press. 1995. The fourth issue of this artist book/magazine, produced by Johnny Brewton. This issue features a Thompson contribution on the inside rear cover, and a cover photo shot through by Thompson with a .45. The image is of porn star Marilyn Chambers posing in the nude, holding a box of Ivory Snow detergent, which is illustrated with a photograph of her holding a young baby. Chambers starred in the ground-breaking porn movie Behind the Green Door, produced by San Francisco porn kings Jim and Artie Mitchell, longtime friends of Thompson. Their theater, the O'Farrell, was considered the Carnegie Hall of pornography in those days, and Thompson made such regular visits there that at one time he had business cards made up reading "Hunter S. Thompson Night Manager the Mitchell Brothers Theater." Chambers' posing as the idealized young mother for Ivory Snow before it was known that she made her living in porn was a scandal for the detergent company, which recalled hundreds of thousands of boxes and replaced Chambers' photo with a painted image, although the woman still bore a striking resemblance to Chambers. This cover image is torn through with two jagged holes, and is stamped inside the cover: "Front Cover Shot With A .45 By Hunter S. Thompson." Unlike other copies of this image we have seen shot by Thompson, this one also bears lips prints, so both shot and kissed (owner of the lips not determined). Hand-assembled and velobound; fine. An extravagant production; the entire run of X-Ray Magazine consisted of ten issues. .

Walasse Ting: Acrylic on Canvas 1994-1995

Zeedjik 742, Digue, Belgium: Guy Pieters Gallery, 1995 Book. Illus. by Walasse Ting. Near Fine. Soft cover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. [unpaginated] A lavishly produced exhibition catalogue of the Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting's work for the Guy Pieters Gallery with a letter, presentation inscription and original drawing by the artist. The book is a folio sized production in white stiff card with a thick illustrated dustjacket. Ting has drawn one of his signature parrots in black pen on the verso of the card wrapper, opposite the title page. The parrot is 35x20cm and beneath it is written: 'to Maureen Best Wishes Ting 1999'. Loosely laid in is a double-sided A4 size letter written using the same pen to 'Dear Maureen' and dated 'Amsterdam 3-10-1999'. Writing on purple paper with silver highlights Ting asks about his correspondent's life, mentioning that 'I heard your News from Yves [Riviere], time to time'. He speculates about a joint venture 'in business in fashion' and dreams of the future: 'Maybe one day we are both getting famous and rich in blue sky and pink T-shirt.' Ting closes with fond reminiscences of Maureen and asks her to 'Please drop a line Yours Walasseting'. The book is very nearly fine with just a little toning to the edges of the paper and almost imperceptible wear to the edge of the jacket. Born in Shanghai Walasse Ting arrived in Paris and then New York at the height of the abstract expressionist movement. Though a friend of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol he is remembered for his bold and vibrant paintings of women, parrots and flowers. As the artist himself puts it: 'When I see a beautiful woman, I see flowers, I have spent all my life painting to express a sense of freshness just like a new spring, and women, cats, flowers and birds in my paintings all represent the beauty in that freshness'. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book. .

      - Near Fine+ typed SIGNED letter from R.D. Wingfield on his personal stationary, dated 1995 talking about Frost books being published in US and about the TV series. "Monday 4th December 1995- Dear Dan Monte: Many thanks for your letter. As requested, I return the bookplates duly signed in my best writing. I do not find book writing easy, so have only written four FROST novels and these have all been published in paperback by Bantam in the States. HARD FROST has just come out over here in hardback and the first print run was completely sold out before publication. A specialised bindings, leather quarter bindings and limited to 85 copies, but at 48 (pounds) a time who (how) many people will want it? I stopped watching after the first three Frost TV films as I did not want the book Frost to be taken over by the TV Frost who is very different. I understand Colin Dexter has the same problem with Morse. I found the episodes I did watch slow, and very bland, although David Jason is a terrific actor. They have cleaned the character up far too much for my taste. Am doodling with another Frost book, but can't work up too much enthusiasm at the moment. Thanks for writing. have a great Christmas. Sincerely Rodney Wingfield". Comes with author hand-addressed return envelope. Letter folded twice. Scarce signed letter from Wingfield with persoanal view of TV adaptation of his work. Unique collectable item for the Wingfield-Frost collector. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 315 pages. Exhibition monograph presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. A brilliant production by Jim Goldberg, Philip Brookman, and Hans Werner Holzwarth: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and video stills by Jim Goldberg. Stories by the street kids themselves: Runaways, hustlers, and prostitutes, abandoned and discarded by their families, "raised by wolves". Printed on thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the very highest standards. In publisher&#39;s plastic wrappers. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark travelling exhibition, which commenced at the Zurich Museum of Art in 1995 and went on to the Corcoran Gallery of Art and other major American venues between 1996 and 1998. Presents Jim Goldberg&#39;s affecting and unforgettable record of his involvement with street kids in Los Angeles and San Francisco over a ten-year period. Left on their own to roam the jungle called the city, they tell Goldberg their individual stories, in interviews, handwritten notes, letters, and other texts, faithfully reproduced in their entirety and brilliantly interspersed with Goldberg&#39;s photographs and video clips. The result is a true collaboration between artist/photographer and subject/storyteller. It is hard to imagine how successfully the exhibition was mounted because the book itself is perfect, a seamless fusion of image and text. Goldberg&#39;s imagery is haunting, stark, and compelling while the kids&#39; stories are rich, complex, and riveting that one ends up poring over every image and reading every word, and yet hunger for more. It is a mistake to think of "Raised By Wolves" as a film in book form. Even if it were, it has more in common with Pier Paolo Pasolini than with Mary Ellen Mark&#39;s "Streetwise" or Larry Clark. Goldberg&#39;s unique achievement is to tell his subjects&#39; stories from their and his own committed points-of-view at the same time. He and his subjects have no "message" for society. They do not want our pity or compassion. They have given us a beautiful book that demands and deserves our loyalty and attention. A "must-have" title for Jim Goldberg collectors. <I><b> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jim Goldberg. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty.         Central Asia

Petersfield & Washington, The Barbican Publishing Company, , 1995. A Contribution towards the better Knowledge of the Topography, Ethnography, Resources, and History &#133; 7 parts in 10 sections, large octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to spines. Very good. Facsimile reprint of MacGregor&#39;s encyclopaedic intelligence resource on the region, originally published "confidentially" in Calcutta between 1871&#150;75. The seven parts cover the north-west frontier in three sections: Afghanistan, Belochistan, Persia, Asiatic Turkey and Caucasia, the khanat of Bokhara, Kashmir and Ladakh. Almost unobtainable in its original form, the text is here reprinted from the British Library&#39;s India Office Records collection, the most complete in existence. The print-run of this facsimile was intended to be 300, but due to the publisher&#39;s bankruptcy only about 30 complete sets were produced. "MacGregor was Quartermaster-General of the Indian Army, and head of its new Intelligence Department. A firm proponent of the &#39;Forward Policy&#39;, which maintained that possible Russian designs on India could be checked only by military might and the creation of buffer states &#133; A bluff, stern man of idiosyncratic disposition, MacGregor was the model for Colonel Creighton in Rudyard Kipling&#39;s Kim, and the effective instigator of the second phase of the Great Game" (French, Younghusband).

The Green Frog Service : Wedgwood & Bentley's Imperial Russian Service

Cacklegoose Press Ltd, London 1995 - Copy no. 914 of the edition of 1000 copies, of which the first 25 are a special leather-bound edition, a further 25 were for collaborators on the publication, and 350 copies were for subscribers; with 600 numbered copies for general sale. 424 pages, over 350 large detailed illustrations, 60 colour plates and more than 1000 reference illustrations, presenting for the first time the entire service in colour and monochrome plates. The crowning achievement of the great English potter Josiah Wedgwood was a dinner and dessert service decorated with hand-painted views of England, Scotland and Wales, commissioned by Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. Known as the Green Frog Service, it provides one of the finest surviving pictorial records of 18th-century Britain. Commissioned and produced in 1773-4, the Service was destined for a 'palace' Catherine was building in English Gothick style as a staging post between St Petersburg and her summer residence at Tsarskoe Selo. Surrounded by marshes, the palace was known as La Grenouillère, hence the device of a bright green frog that appears on every piece of the Service. The Empress particularly asked for views of landscape gardens, and many of the finest gardens in Britain are depicted, together with a great array of 'Antiquities' . ruined castles and abbeys, old manor houses, Cornish dolmens . as well as romantic landscapes, views on the Thames at London and even early industrial sites.         Arabian Nights & Days [Signed, Murray Gell-Man&#39;s copy]

New York: Doubleday, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American edition, first printing, in a Near Fine dust jacket, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ on the half-title. Originally published in Arabic in 1979, the novel&#39;s title was inspired by the classic "A Thousand and One Nights". Naguib Mahfouz "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind", won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Egyptian, and the only author writing in Arabic, ever to win the Prize. In 1994 Mahfouz survived an assassination attempt perpetrated by religious extremists. The attack damaged nerves in his right hand, rendering Mahfouz unable to write for more than a few minutes each day, and seriously affecting his handwriting as seen in his inscription and signature to this book. (The inscription is in Arabic.) Having a wonderful Provenance, this copy belonged to Murray Gell-Man, the American physicist and linguist who himself won the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles and for his discovery of the quark, and carries his bookplate on the front free endpaper. Signed copies of this Nobel Prize winner&#39;s books are scarce. A Fine, Superior, copy, of this this Nobel Laureate&#39;s work from the library of another important Nobel Laureate. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ. RARE.
