        Adult Comedy Action Drama (Signed)

Scalo, New York, Berlin, Zurich 1995 - This is a signed first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook Adult Comedy Action Drama published by Scalo, New York, Berlin, Zurich in 1995. Containing 235 vibrant color images, the book is Prince¿s ode to consumerism. Writing in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century David Levi Strauss states, An autobiography through words and pictures Adult Comedy Action Drama links together Prince's drawings, aphorisms, original photographs and photographs of other peoples' photographs. Lighthearted and funny, it describes and theatricalizes the visual 'stage set' of an artist's life, enacting all the comedies, actions and dramas with pictures alone. Prince's is a postmodern landscape, where one becomes what one beholds"¿."Adult Comedy Action Drama is a kind of self-portrait of the artist as individual consumer. Or one might think of it as landscape photography, where the landscape is consumerism.Richard Prince, always the classicist, revisits a central concern of art from the beginning of easel painting: the display of constitutive possessions. The New York Times in their review of the book wrote, Prince updates the old Modernist flirtation between the intellectual and the supposedly primitive borrowing conceptual and aesthetic strategies from Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Minimalism and the photography-as-painting movement. Measuring approximately 10 inches x 12 inches, the book is bound in blue paper boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book and dust jacket are in FINE condition. The book has been signed, dated and inscribed by Richard Prince and is housed in a custom slipcase. Cited in both The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century and The Open Book by Andrew Roth. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fine in a fine dust jacket.Richard Prince is the first artist whose "rephotograph" image, Untitled (Cowboy), raised more than $1 million at auction when it was sold at Christie's New York in 2005.         Arithmeticorum libri sex, et de numeris multangulis liber unus. Cum commentariis C.G. Bacheti V.C. & observationibus D.P. de Fermat senatoris Tolosani.Toulouse: Bernard Bosc, 1670.

First edition of Fermat's discoveries in number theory and first printing of his celebrated 'last theorem', one of the most famous problems in mathematics and unsolved for over 325 years until its solution in 1995. Norman 777. <br/><br/> A Toulouse parlementaire with a passion for numbers, Fermat was one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his or any time. He made important discoveries in analytic geometry and algebra, and was the first European to make extensive contributions to the theory of numbers, which he restricted in principle to the domain of integers, establishing it as an independent branch of mathematics. Since most of his work in the realm of number theory remained unpublished in his lifetime and of limited circulation later, "it was neither understood nor appreciated until Euler revived it and initiated the line of continuous research that culminated in the work of Gauss and Kummer in the early nineteenth century. Indeed, many of Fermat's results are basic elements of number theory today... The importance of Fermat's work in the theory of numbers lay less in any contribution to contemporary developments in mathematics than in their stimulative effect on later generations" (DSB). His work paved the way notably for the development of the differential calculus.<br/><br/> Fermat showed not the slightest interest in publishing his work, which remained confined to his correspondence, personal notes, and to marginal jottings in a copy of the 1621 <i>editio princeps</i>, edited by Claude Bachet, of Diophantus' <i>Arithmetica</i>. Fermat's marginalia included not only arguments against some of Bachet's conclusions, but also new problems inspired by Diophantus. After his death, Fermat's eldest son Clement-Samuel published in 1670 his father's marginalia in this new edition. Most famous of the 48 observations by Fermat included here is the tantalizing note that appears on fol. H3r; stating one of the most famous problems in mathematics; the impossibility of finding a positive integer </i>n > 2</i> for which the equation <i>xn + yn = zn</i> holds true for the positive integers <i>x</i>, <i>y</i>, and <i>z</i>. Fermat noted that he had discovered a 'truly marvelous demonstration' of this proposition, but that the margin was too narrow to transcribe it. The proposition, so simple in form, became known as the single most difficult problem in mathematics, and for over 325 years no mathematician succeeded either in disproving it or in finding Fermat's mysterious proof. In 1995 Andrew Wiles, professor of mathematics at Princeton, who had been obsessed with Fermat's proposition since the age of 10, completed a 130-page proof of the theorem (first presented in 1993, with a flaw that required revision), using the most advanced techniques of modern mathematics. His achievement was described by fellow mathematicians as the mathematical equivalent 'of splitting the atom or finding the structure of DNA' (Simon Singh). Nonetheless, Wiles had had to resort to sophisticated 20th-century techniques not available to Fermat. The exact form of Fermat's proof, if indeed he had a genuine one, thus remains one of the great unsolved puzzles of mathematics.. Folio (350 x 232 mm), contemporary with raised bands and gilt spine label, edges sprinkled in red, pp [12] 64; 341 [i.e., 343, pp 337-343 mispaginated 335-341]; 48. Upper front corner with some chipping and wear, some gatherings with light toning, title page with a small wormhole, inner margin of the first five leaves with a light water stain, in all a fine and entirely untouched copy

Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia and Jody Hanson: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and photo-tableaux by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. Essay by Peter Galassi. Printed on thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the work that secured Philip-Lorca DiCorcia&#39;s place at the forefront of contemporary art photography. DiCorcia&#39;s photography is influenced primarily by film-making, which he divides into two styles: The first is profoundly suggestive of a wider world beyond the frame (as in Jean Renoir and Francois Truffaut). The second is a closed world, where one&#39;s gaze is completely focussed on the frame because everything is contained within it (as in Alfred Hitchcock and Robert Bresson). The dominant tradition in photography has been much closer to the first cinematic style (as in Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand), in street photography that feels effortless and spontaneous, alludes to the city-at-large and ultimately, to our world. DiCorcia admires this great tradition enormously. Still, a whole body of work already exists, and it could not be improved upon. Instead, he feels that the opportunity for an ambitious photographer (like himself) lies in creating private worlds, his as well as other human beings&#39;. Hence his meticulously directed photographs and photo-tableaux, with their precise, deliberate, and static yet ineffable ambience, a universe unto itself, whose possibilities are defined solely by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. His stated wish is that this willed omniscience enables him to hint at the mysterious and sublime: "Photography is a foreign language everyone thinks he speaks" (Philip-Lorca DiCorcia). An absolute "must-have" title for Philip-Lorca DiCorcia collectors. <b><i>This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the half-title page by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Beware: Almost all other copies available online, signed or un-signed, are subsequent printings and as such, do not have the same collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 55 color plates. One of the most important and influential living artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PHILIP-LORCA DICORCIA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0870701452.

DAS PERIKOPENBUCH HEINRICHS II. [THE LECTIONARY OF HENRY II]

Lachen am Zürichsee: Coron-Verlag, 1995. No. 244 OF 250 SPECIAL COPIES in the immense sculpted container (of a total edition of 500) . Hardcover. The Deluxe Version, with theImmense Gilded, Sculpted, and Bejewelled Lid. 445 x 330 mm (17 1/2 x 13"). Box: 700 x 500 mm. (27 1/2 x 19 5/8"). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German). No. 244 OF 250 SPECIAL COPIES in the immense sculpted container (of a total edition of 500). Publisher&#39;s light gray-green silk, upper cover with pierced brass palmette frame, large central medallion of the Agnus Dei surrounded by four smaller medallions of the Virtues (Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude), raised bands, two ornamental brass clasps and leather thongs. Housed in a massive suede-lined brown leather box, its lid a gilt-plated metal reproduction of a Medieval relief scuplture of Christ in Majesty, his nimbus studded with colored gems and pearls, an orb in one hand, with small figures representing the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II and his wife Cunegund on either side, kneeling to kiss the Savior&#39;s feet. Rubrics in red, illuminated five-line knotwork initials throughout, and 28 full-page miniatures with burnished gold applied by hand. With a folding cloth case containing two prospectuses, authentication documents, and related material. In mint condition. This is the deluxe form of a facsimile of one of the major works of Ottonian decoration, written and illustrated ca. 1007-12 at the scriptorium of the Benedictine abbey of Reichenau, in its glory then as the largest and most influential school of book illumination in the 10th and 11th centuries. The Pericope, which contains the Gospel excerpts to be read at Mass throughout the liturgical year, was commissioned by Henry II for the consecration of the cathedral at Bamberg. The miniatures here illustrate key stories from each Gospel and are typical of the large New Testament cycles found in the Liuthar group of manuscripts, attributed to a monk and scribe of that name who produced works of outstanding artistic merit, among them the Gospels of Otto III and the Aachen Evangeliary. The greatest care was taken in reproducing the original manuscript (now held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich), using digitization methods of the highest resolution and employing artisans to apply 23 1/2 karat gold by hand and to handstitch the leaves. Curators from BSB compared the facsimile to the original to insure the accuracy of the colors. The binding, too, is convincing: for example, the metalwork on the front cover, obviously accomplished by hand, is full of irregularities in the strips and nails used to hold down the decorative leafy frame. The facsimile itself (issued in a press run of 500 copies) is impressive enough, but the box in which it is housed (for the 250 special copies like the present one) is particularly memorable. The relief sculpture of Christ, which is based on a piece held by the Cluny Museum in Paris, represents without doubt the most majestic packaging of any modern facsimile.
