The Tale of Peter Rabbit. A Portfolio of Art Prints from the original illustration line-blocks made for the First Private Edition (1901), with an introduction by Maurice SENDAK

Kingston NY: Battledore Ltd, 1995 - Comprising Thirty-four separate prints (using all of the surviving blocks) from the original 1901 Beatrix Potter designs, now re-struck in brown ink on mould-made deckle-edged 100% cotton acid free paper, limited to 275 numbered sets (250 numbered 1-250 + xxv 'hors commerce'), each print individually certified with a stamp on its reverse by Alecto Historical Editions. Square 16mo, accompanied by a separate booklet with an original essay written by Maurice Sendak in appreciation of these images and signed by him. Letterpress-printed (23pp + colophon), hand-sewn printed wrappers; the whole boxed together in gray cloth folding case, the front blocked with the same image on the front cover as that used on the privately printed first edition. Also signed by historical block specialist Iain Bain who supervised and designed this project. SPECIAL COPY: one of 'xxv' hors commerce, of which this is copy # 'vi' which includes an original pencil sketch by Maurice Sendak of his own interpretation of Peter Rabbit wearing his jacket; the drawing measures 1-3/8 inches (3.5 cm) height and is under the artist's signature (verso title) on the colophon page. Also with an additional print from another Beatrix Potter line-block: "Come dance a jig, to my Granny's pig", this design probably from the 1890s illustrating a nursery rhyme, and perhaps also intended as a design for a Christmas Card. Measuring 6-1/2 x 9 inches, the print comes in its own printed folder with separate descriptive commentary by Anne Stevenson Hobbs; only 125 copies were printed as a bonus to the first 100 pre-publication subscribers to the Peter Rabbit Art Prints portfolio (+ xxv copies 'hors commerce').       - POTTER,BEATRIX. THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. Battledore Books 1995. This is a magnificnet Portfolio of prints from the original blocks with an appreciation signed by Maurice Sendak. The original first printing of Peter Rabbit was produced in 1901 by Potter herself after efforts at finding a publisher failed. She privately printed 250 copies of Peter Rabbit with a color frontispiece and 42 black line illustrations (including the cover). The blocks for this printing were only used one other time (for the second printing of 200 copies). Now, after nearly a century, the publisher has located 34 of these original blocks and has produced this wonderfully elaborate portfolio, LIMITED TO 250 NUMBERED SETS. Each illustration is printed on fine acid free paper and each has its own enclosure printed with the caption. All are housed in a cloth clamshell case with a leather label. The images are remarkably sharp and clean. Featured before the prints is a 20 page ESSAY BY MAURICE SENDAK - an appreciation of Beatrix Potter. Sendak's admiration for Potter is longstanding and having the association between Sendak - the greatest contemporary author/illustrator and children's book, and Potter - author of one of the greatest literary works for children, couldn't be more significant. It has been printed by letterpress and SIGNED BY SENDAK! Included with this portfolio is a wonderful block print by Potter made from the original zinc line-cut. It is previously unpublished and is a charming woodcut entitled "Come dance a jig, to my Granny's Pig. The print is housed in a printed folder and is accompanied by a descriptive commentary by Ann Hobbs (Curator and the V&A). This is altogether a most wonderful item for anyone who appreciates Beatrix Potter. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large (S,M,L,XL)

The Monacelli Press, Inc., New York 1995 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Silver leatherette-covered boards with title stamped in black and yellow on cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Collaboration between Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau. Edited by Jennifer Sigler. Photographs by Hans Werlemann. Designed by Bruce Mau Design, Inc., Bruce Mau with Kevin Sugden, and Nigel Smith, Greg van Alstyne, Alison Hahn and Chris Rowat. 1375 pp., with four color plates throughout. 9-3/8 x 7-3/8 inches. CONDITION: Fine. From the publisher: "This massive book is a novel about architecture. Conceived by Rem Koolhaas -- author of Delirious New York -- and Bruce Mau -- designer of Zone -- as a free-fall in the space of the typographic imagination, the book's title, Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large, is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. The book combines essays, manifestoes, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city, with work produced by Kookhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today -- its splendors and miseries -- exploring and revealing the corrosive impact of politics, context, the economy, globalization -- the world."         Autograph musical working manuscript draft in short score of the Sinfonisches Vorspiel for large orchestra. The complete work

4 pp. Notated in pencil on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper. Large folio (420 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Signed, titled and inscribed to the composer's friend Jürgen Köchel by the composer. Dated May 25, [19]94. Dedicated to the conductor Gerd Albrecht. Scored for triple wind, 4 horns, 3 trombones, tuba, 3 performers on timpani, harp, piano and strings. A very active manuscript, with numerous corrections, amendations, directions and indications pertaining to instrumentation in Schnittke's small, dense hand. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. Together with a printed edition of the full score published by Sikorski in ca. 1995. . Designed as a tribute to the composer on his 60th birthday, the Sinfonisches Vorspiel was first performed at the Musikhalle in Hamburg on November 6, 1994 with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester, conducted by Albrecht, the dedicatee; the composer was unfortunately unable to attend due to ill-health. Schnittke moved to Hamburg in 1990 to teach composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He had had his first stroke in 1985; he suffered a second in 1991 and yet another in the year of composition of the present work, 1994, which left him almost completely paralysed. He went on to write only a few more short works thereafter, and also a Ninth Symphony, but its score was almost completely illegible because he was forced by his paralysis to notate it with his left hand.Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output. A dynamic working manuscript of one of Schnittke's last major orchestral compositions.

        To Kill a Mockingbird

New York: HarperCollins, 1995 35th Anniversary Edition. First edition thus, later printing. Signed by Lee on the half-title. Publisher's black cloth over black boards, metallic copper lettering to the spine; in the original black pictorial dust jacket, with a tree illustration after the original first edition dust jacket art to the front panel. Fine book; in a fine unclipped dust jacket. A fresh and pleasing copy, signed by Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic Southern Gothic novel that tells the story of protagonist Scout Finch, who is coming of age in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression. Along with her brother Jem, Scout watches as her father Atticus defends an African-American man who has been falsely accused of raping a white woman during the height of Jim Crow Era racial inequality. Despite its controversial and emotional themes, To Kill a Mockingbird is beloved as a warm and entertaining bildungsroman; Harper Lee loosely based the plot on an event she witnessed as a child in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama and many of the characters were inspired by her friends, family and neighbors, infusing the novel with the author's sentimental memories of her childhood in the American South. To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into a film of the same name in 1962 starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham.. Signed by Author. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        RUTH BOOK ["Ruthbook"]

(Nigel Shafron) (1995), (London) - Oblong 8vo. Very good plus in stapled glossy printed wraps, with title hand-written by Shafran in pencil (as issued). A few spots of soil to covers. Some moderate rubbing. Else clean and sound. Very good plus overall. [32]pp. From an edition of 600 unnumbered copies. Though not called for, INSCRIBED and dated in year of publication by Shafran to the first page. Shafran's first book, "[a] chronological set of photographs taken between June 1992 and January 1995" of his long-time partner Ruth. "RUTH BOOK could be said to be composed from exalted snapshots, but that is not to denigrate the work's superb quality [.] This is a simple book, a family album or a love poem, and is very affecting. A relationship - or two and a half years of it - in fourteen pictures. Photography can do that" (Parr & Badger, PHOTOBOOK Vol. III, p. 261). Intimate and tender, RUTH BOOK marked the transition in Shafran's career from commercial (i-D etc.) to personal projects, with Ruth being a frequent and ongoing subject (see, for example, RUTH ON THE PHONE, 2005). An elusive book. Scarce in trade and OCLC locates just one holding (MoMA). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Daemonum investigatio peripatetica In qua explicatur locus Hippocratis in Progn. Si quid diuinum in morbis habetur. Florence: Giunta. 1580

EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION of a quite important work on witchcraft, demonology, Hippocratic medicine, and Aristotelian science by the Italian scientist, botanist, physiologist, and philosopher Andreas Cesalpino [Caesalpinus]. Here Cesalpino set out to reduce evidence of witchcraft and demons to a literal science so that he could then examine and study it in a proper 'Aristotelian' manner in order to "discover a role for the physician in diagnosing and treating possession" (Clark, "Hippocratic Medicine and Aristotelian Science in the 'Daemonum investigatio peripatetica' of Andrea Cesalpino," Bulletin of the History of Medicine, 69: 4 (1995: Winter) p. 527). "By returning to Hippocratic tradition and seeking to validate it through Aristotelian science, Cesalpino thought he had discovered the proper unifying principles of medicine and natural philosophy which would allow him to view possession as a process of nature" (ibid., 541). As the title of Cesalpino's work suggests, he also "examines the problem of demonic possession by explaining a passage of Hippocrates that dealt with the question of whether there is anything divine in diseases. The treatise appeared at the height of a flurry of theological and scientific inquiry into the nature and role of demons, in which almost all agreed that in one way or another demons are real, physical entities working within the natural scheme of things. Demons achieve their magical effects, it was generally believed, through an extraordinary knowledge of cause and effects and by their unusual constitution (the fineness of their bodies, their swiftness, etc.). Several thinkers had raised the question of how this view of demons might affect the functions of the physician and the exorcist, since traditionally the former treated natural diseases, the latter supernatural. Cesalpino sought to treat the topic more fully and systematically" (Clark, p. 527). REFERENCES: Censimento 16 CNCE 10932; Wellcome 1180; Caillet 1889. CONDITION & DETAILS: Florence: Giunta. 8vo. 8 x 5.75 inches (200 x 143mm). [2], 52 pages, [2]. Small repair to the vellum on the rear board (see scan). Very tightly bound. Exceptional condition. Interior: Complete. Meticulously rendered repairs to upper margins, never impacting text.         Theorematis fundamentalis in doctrina de residuis quadraticis demonstrationes et ampliationes novae.Göttingen: H. Dieterich, 1818.

First edition, offprint issue and an exceptionally fine copy, of this important memoir in which Gauss provided a fifth and sixth proof of his great law of quadratic reciprocity, which he privately referred to as the <i>Aureum Theorema</i> (Golden Theorem). These two proofs are particularly important since, as Gauss explains in the introduction to the present work, the techniques they employ ('Gauss's lemma' and 'Gauss sums,' respectively) can be applied to the study of cubic and biquadratic reciprocity. These ideas were indeed used by many mathematicians, including Gauss himself, in the study of higher reciprocity laws from the nineteenth century through to the present day. Attempts to demonstrate one of these higher reciprocity laws led in 1995 to the proof of Fermat's last theorem (see below).<br/><br/> The law of quadratic reciprocity was discovered by Euler in 1783, and incomplete proofs were given by Euler himself and in 1788 by Legendre. The law was discovered independently by Gauss when he was just 18, and a year later on 8 April, 1796 he found the first correct proof, which Kronecker (1823-91) aptly called "a test of the power of Gauss's genius." It was published in his greatest work <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i> (1801), in which he wrote: "For a whole year this theorem tormented me and absorbed my greatest efforts until, at last, I obtained a proof." The attempt to generalize quadratic reciprocity for powers higher than the second was one of the main goals that led nineteenth century mathematicians, including Gauss, Dedekind, Dirichlet, Eisenstein, Hilbert, Jacobi and Kummer to the study of general algebraic number fields; notably, Kummer invented 'ideal numbers' in order to state and prove higher reciprocity laws. The ninth in the list of 23 unsolved problems which David Hilbert proposed to the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1900 asked for the "Proof of the most general reciprocity law for an arbitrary number field." <br/><br/> "Gauss' fifth proof of the quadratic reciprocity is Gauss' most elementary proof of the quadratic reciprocity law... for which Gauss has given altogether eight proofs, six of which were published, and two more were found in his papers after his death. The fifth proof was published in 1818, together with the sixth proof, under the title <i>Theorematis Fundamentalis in Doctrina de Residuis Quadraticis Demonstrationes et Ampliationes Novae</i>. But Gauss found it probably already between 1807 and 1808... [it is] based on <i>Gauss' lemma</i>" (Laudal & Piene, p. 276). <br/><br/> "The sixth and last of Gauss' published proofs of the law of quadratic reciprocity was published in 1818... He mentions in the introduction to this paper that for years he had searched for a method that would generalize to the cubic and biquadratic case and that finally his untiring efforts were crowned with success... The purpose of publishing this sixth proof, he states, was to bring to a close that part of the higher arithmetic dealing with quadratic residues and to say, in a sense, farewell..." (Ireland & Rosen, p. 76). <br/><br/> Quadratic reciprocity is a result about 'modular arithmetic.' Two integers (whole numbers) <i>m</i> and <i>n</i> are said to be equal modulo an integer <i>p</i> if <i>m - n</i> is an integer multiple of <i>p</i> (so there are only <i>p</i> distinct integers modulo <i>p</i>). "For almost all its history, the study of modular arithmetic has been driven purely by its inherent beauty and by human curiosity. But in one of those strange pieces of serendipity which often characterize the advance of human knowledge, in the last half century modular arithmetic has found important applications in the "real world." Today, the theory of modular arithmetic (e.g., Reed-Solomon error correcting codes) is the basis for the way DVDs store or satellites transmit large amounts of data without corrupting it. Moreover, the cryptographic codes which keep, for example, our banking transactions secure are also closely connected with the theory of modular arithmetic.<br/><br/> "The first really great achievement in the study of modular arithmetic was Carl Friedrich Gauss's proof in 1796 of his celebrated law of quadratic reciprocity... It states that 'if <i>p</i> is a prime number, then the number of square roots of an integer <i>n</i> in arithmetic modulo <i>p</i> depends only on <i>p</i> modulo 4<i>n</i>'... Gauss's theorem also provides a very effective way of determining the number of square roots a whole number has in arithmetic modulo a prime number <i>p</i>... One could ask for a similar method that given any number of polynomials in any number of variables helps one to determine the number of solutions to those equations in arithmetic modulo a variable prime number <i>p</i>. Such results are referred to as 'reciprocity laws'." (Taylor). <br/><br/> In 1957 the Japanese mathematicians Yutaka Taniyama and Goro Shimura proposed a reciprocity law for cubic equations in two variables. "In the mid-1980s, Gerhard Frey, Jean-Pierre Serre, and Kenneth Ribet showed that the Shimura-Taniyama reciprocity law, if true, would imply Fermat's Last Theorem. Motivated by this, in 1995, Andrew Wiles, partly in collaboration with the author, established many cases of the Shimura-Taniyama reciprocity law and hence finally proved Fermat's Last Theorem" (<i>ibid</i>.). <br/><br/> Cajori, <i>A History of Mathematics</i>, pp. 435-36; Poggendorff, I, 854-57; K.
