A Tribute to the Pioneers of Animation: Commemorative Program [*SIGNED* by 26 noted figures of the animation world]

Privately Issued, [Los Angeles] 1994 - [virtually flawless condition, with just the tiniest bit of edgewear]. 64-page booklet commemorating a banquet held on September 1, 1994, in honor of 29 "pioneers of animation" (many, but not all, of whom were animators), the majority of whom were in attendance -- except for four who had passed away earlier in the year, while the event was still being planned. The 26 signatures present in the program were collected by the publisher on labels, which have been carefully affixed to the appropriate pages, each beneath a photograph of the individual and opposite a one-page summary of his career and achievements in the animation field. ("His," yes: they're all men.) Contained in the book are the signatures (on labels) of the following: Bob Allen, Ed Benedict, Dick Bickenbach, Preston Blair, Shamus Culhane, Marc Davis, Ron Dias, Eyvind Earle, Bob Givens, Bill Hurtz, Ollie Johnston, Paul Julian, Ward Kimball, Walter Lantz (who died in March 1994, but whose signature here is dated 1982, although I can't vouch for its source or its authenticity), Bill Melendez, Maurice Noble, Ken O'Connor, Bill Peet, Virgil Ross, Irv Spence, Frank Thomas, Richard Thomas, Myron Waldman, Clair Weeks, Lou Zukor, and Morey Zukor. The only person who seems to have missed his label-signing assignment was Joe Grant, and two of those (Izzy Ellis and Jack Hannah) who died before the event are represented by photographs of their signatures and handprints in cement at the "Animation Walk of Fame." Anyone who knows anything about animation will recognize most of these names -- which include four of Disney's renowned "Nine Old Men" (all the survivors of that group at that time) -- and will appreciate the significance and uniqueness of this gathering of signatures. All of these gentlemen have now passed from the scene, I believe; I haven't checked every last one individually, but the youngest man in the room at the time (at least 20 years younger than almost everybody else), Ron Dias, passed away in 2013. Also included, as a laid-in (unattached) center-spread insert, printed on heavy stock but folded vertically down the middle, is a color group photo of 23 individuals, 21 of whom are among the group of honorees; facsimiles of their signatures are printed on the photo, but not matched up with their images in any way, and since you can't read their name-tags in the photo, you're on your own as far as connecting the dots is concerned. (The two other people in the photo are women -- one of whom is almost completely hidden -- who are either (a) wives or (b) unannounced honorees.) The group photo, unfolded, measures 10-1/2" x 8-1/2".         VISIONAIRE NO 12: DESIRE (FALL 1994) - DISPLAY COPY

(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. VISIONAIRE NO. 12: DESIRE (FALL 1994) - DISPLAY COPY. New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1994. First Edition 1/2000. 4to. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. Individual illustrated sheets laid into a debossed silk-over-boards portfolio, profusely illustrated. Designed by Gregory Foley. Published in an edition of two thousand copies, this is the twelfth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "This was our collaboration with Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, and an opportunity to support a cause very close to Visionaire. Anneliese Estrada, DIFFA's creative director and our friend, came to us to raise awareness and money through art. The art dealer Paul Morris helped us gather all the original artwork printed in the issue, which was then exhibited at Charles Cowles Gallery and auctioned, with all of the proceeds benefiting DIFFA's charitable programs. The issue came in a red-satin case with bone latches, modeled after Chinese brocade jewelry boxes. These were made by hand in China, and the work took forever. The fabric refused to adhere to the boards due to, the factory wrote us, ''the humidity caused by the monsoon.'' Each edition opens with an actual print of a three-dimensional photograph of Shalom Harlow shot by Stephane Sednaoui. Sixty more artists contributed their own sexy and suggestive imagery". The stellar contributors to this issue include editor Stephen Gan, Bill Cunningham, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Ruben Toledo, Francois Berthoud, Mats Gustafson, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, David Seidner, Todd Oldham, Enrique Badulescu, Ruven Afanador, Martin Margiela, Pamela Hanson, Peter Robotham, Barbara Kruger, Nobuyoshi Araki, Nan Goldin, Ross Bleckner, David Armstrong, Jack Pierson, Steven Klein, Karen Kilimnik, Jim Hodges, Zoe Leonard, Kay Rosen, Lisa Yuskavage, Bill Jacobson, Mark Morrisroe, Bjork, and many, many more. A most handsome unnumbered hors commerce example of this uncommon issue stamped "Display Copy" by the publisher on the inside front board. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1994., 1994. First edition. First edition, first printing. White cloth, purple endpapers, 8vo. Fine, unread copy in fine dust jacket. A novel set during WWII on the Greek island of Cephallonia, which is occupied both by German and Italian forces. The Greeks, Germans, and Italians, all seem to co-exist rather well given the circumstances, but after a time the desire for power and control causes a terrible hardship for the islanders. Provocative and yet a sensitively written story that we feel many of you will enjoy for its sense of place, the characters involved, and the story itself. Winner of the Commonwealth Writer's Prize and the basis for the 2001 movie that starred Nicholas Cage, Penelope Cruz, and John Hurt.

Milano: Photology, , 1994. Rilegato (hardback). Ottimo (Fine). Illustrated with black and white and colour plates. Text by Bruce Weber (NYC, 1994) / Illustrato con fotografie in bianco e nero e a colori. Testo di Bruce Weber (New York City, 1994). 16mo (cm 19x13,5). pp. 92. Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition). Raro fotolibro di Bruce Weber, pubblicato in occasione dell'esposizione presso la Galleria Photology di Milano del 1994. Il libro è un'ode al Montana, dove l'Autore vive con la sua famiglia: "A lot of people come to Montana wanting to experience the west and become a cowboy just like John Wayne. I couldn't imagine doing that, because I don't ride, I don't hunt animals, and I never wear cowboy  boots. But that's okay, because nobody in Montana cares what you look like or what you do. There's an old story that Steve McQueen once came to the Chico Inn in Montana, with Ali McGraw. He was there to meet Sam Peckinpah, and start work on "The Gateway". He walked into the bar and asked the bartender for a beer, and the bartender said, 'Hy, my name's Jim-what's yours?" Hesitatingly he answered, "Steve McQueen". And the bartender said, 'Where are you from Steve?'

Von dem greüwlichen Laster der Trunckenhayt ...[Augsburg, Heinrich Steiner, 1533?]. 4to. With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 x 12 cm) on title-page showing an elaborate banquet and a vomitting man, by H. Weiditz (the Petrarca master), decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. Early 19th-century shell-marbled boards.

Goedeke II, 10,6; Hayn Gotendorf II, 357; P. Hayden-Roy, The inner world and the outer world: a biography of Sebastian Franck (1994), pp. 19-25; Kaczerowsky, Sebastian Franck Bibliographie (1976), A 4 (5 copies); VD16 F2142 (2 copies); not in Vicaire; Adams; Fairfax Murray. One of at least three and possibly five editions that VD16 lists under 1533 of "On the horrible vice of drunkenness", a treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages, probably first published in 1531. Kaczerowsky and others regard the present edition as the first, published in 1528. It is also of medical interest, since Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness. He attributed a variety of social ills to alcohol, including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. All of his works were placed on the index of prohibited books in 1559.Most of the editions with the 1531 date have 32 leaves, expanded to 38 leaves in one with the 1531 date and those with the 1533 date. Since the present edition also has 38 leaves, it seems likely to have been printed in 1533. With 5 pages of bibliographical notes in German on 3 leaves inserted before the title-page, the first 2, dated 1857, signed by the owner Friedrich Latendorf (1831-1898), who later edited Sebastian Franck's erste namenlose Sprichwörtersammlung vom Jahre 1532 in getreuen Abdruck, 1876. They discuss the dates and order of the first editions and issues. Further with the name of the owner Howard Osgood (1831-1911), professor at Rochester Theological Seminary in New York, on the title-page; the embossed stamp of the Rochester Theological Seminary Library on the title-page and the stamp of its Ambrose Swasey Library on the foot edge. With the inserted leaves crudely attached to the title-page with tape in the gutter margin, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor foxing.

Selbst: Gewörtert. Illustrierte Briefe von Horst Janssen. Herausgegeben von Gertraut und Wilhelm Hornbostel / Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Ausstellung vom 11. November 1994 bis 22. Januar 1995.

Horst Janssen (* 14. November 1929 in Hamburg - + 31.

Bradshaw's Ancient Rock Paintings of North-West Australia

Edition Limitee, Geneva, Switzerland 1994 - Roughly 65,000 years ago the earliest humans arrived in Australia from Timor and eventually created astonishing works of art in the Kimberley region of northwest Australia, making them perhaps the oldest paintings of human figures ever created. Called the Bradshaws after Joseph Bradshaw (who first recorded them in 1891), or the Gwion Gwion, the mystery of their creation has not been solved and has become a politically and culturally charged issue. Grahame Walsh (1944 - 2007), the author and world's leading expert on the Bradshaws, made thousands of photographs of these sophisticated works and was commissioned by the Australian government to produce a book considered to be the finest in its field ('Australia's Greatest Rock Art') for the Bicentenary. Large 4to, xviii, 285pp, illustrations include 99 full page color plates. Black gilt cloth. Original pictorial dust jacket with illustrations in black silhouette at front cover, title in black at white dust jacket spine. OCLC: 221613465. Trove 23687823. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
