Parfionovich, Yuri, with Gyurme Dorje & Fernand Meyer (Editors)
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1992. First US Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 2 Large Volumes in Slipcase. Books measure 12” x 14”. Hardcover. Bound in scarlet cloth with gilt titles to front and spine. Sewn bindings. Orange textured end papers. 336 total pages. Illustrated throughout with full page plates in black in white (Vol. 1) and color (Vol. 2). A very heavy set of books. May require extra postage costs. Books are in fine condition in a near fine, color pictorial slipcase. In this extra large format set are a series of 79 full-page paintings (tangkas), which were originally commissioned to illustrate the comprehensive medical treatise called The Blue Beryl. Created between 1687 and 1703, these paintings are vibrant pieces of educational art that interweave practical medical knowledge with Buddhist traditions and Tibetan lore—depicting such things as the use of omens and dreams for making diagnoses, hundreds of medicinal herbs and medical instruments, detailed diagrams of human anatomy, and much more. Volume one contains the full page paintings in black and white, with complete translation of the Blue Beryl text. Volume two includes the 79 paintings in full and vibrant color, with descriptive text of each plate. A beautiful production.

Internally pages are clean with no marks or foxing. Signed and inscribed in black ink by the author to the title page as 'Teddy' the name used by family and close friends. There's a signature under the dedication which I can't read but assume it's the Michael mentioned in the inscription. Charles Bukowski
SANTA ROSA CA: BLACK SPARROW PRESS, 1992. LIKE NEW ALL PAGES CLEAN AND INTACT SPINE TIGHT. "A. Huxley died at 69/ much too early for such a/ fierce talent." Now in his seventh decade, Bukowski is preoccupied with death, but in such a way that he spices his usual flat monotone with bits of welcome humor. While continuing his focus on life in bars and at the racetrack, these poems enlarge the meditative tone begun in You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense ( LJ 1/87). Bukowski remembers the first time he read great authors or heard classical composers; he reflects on old friends, co-workers, and lovers, but with a new gentleness, as in "Darkling," a wonderfully lyric love poem to his wife. Poems such as this make it easier to spot the poetic craft at work behind Bukowski's understated common speech. Finally, the poet's emphasis on reflection and mellowed tone will, one hopes, enlarge the poet's huge but specialized readership. - Rochelle Ratner, formerly Poetry Editor, "Soho Weekly News," New York Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. 405 PAGES. (Charles Bukowski)
Black Sparrow Press & Apopira Editions, 1992. very good. This is a signed contract to allow Apopira Editions to publisher a Greek edition of Bukowski's novel 'Hollywood'. This contract was made in May of 1992. Charles Bukowski signs (in his own hand on THIS contract) and so does Bukowski's European representative Carl Weissner, working out of Manhein German. Also signing is John Martin of Black Sparrow Press and the Greek publisher. It's quite an artifact. Probably a 100 or more of these sorts of contracts exist but good luck trying to buy one. This is one of the few to come onto market and the very LAST such contract I own. If you were interested in framing you could copy the front, put a photo of Bukowski in the center and have the signed back on display. To have Weissner, Martin and Bukowski...what a combo. Where are you going to find it kid? Here's your chance.

Santa Rosa, California: Black Sparrow Press, 1992. Fine. This is one of the most exclusive copies of this book. It is one of 26 "Lettered" copies, this one being "U". It has the special multi-colored cloth back strip. This is listed in Krumhansl as 129e (rarest limitation). This was the last Black Sparrow collection of poems published in Bukowski's lifetime. It has the print of Bukowski artwork but notice how the print has been signed by Bukowski, "BUK 92". He also has signed the colophon page. This copy has the clear mylar dust jacket (not shown). 405 pages. Of course you can find a much less expensive copy but this is the exclusive "Lettered" club.
