Ezra Pound
New York: The Limited Editions Club Printed at Horton Tank Graphics, 1992. Condition: Volume is fine overall, the binding is clean and not sunned, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the colophon page has some shallow unintended creases at the gutter, else fine. Number 269, quarto, 41 pp., signed by Francesco Clemente. Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (1885-1972) was a major figure in the early modernist movement; his early poetry was devoted to the development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. Of this work, Cathay, Chinese critic Wai-lim Yip writes: "One can easily excommunicate Pound from the Forbidden City of Chinese studies, but it seems clear that in his dealings with Cathay, even when he is given only the barest details, he is able to get into the central concerns of the original author by what we may perhaps call a kind of clairvoyance" (N.B., above info from Wiki). DESCRIPTION: Fully bound in light blue-grey linen, embossed decoration on the front board, all text pages french fold, the seven colour woodcuts bound in throughout the text; type Monotype Lutetia, text printed on handmade Japanese Ogawashi paper, large quarto in size (almost 11.75" tall), pagination: (i-iv), (1)-34, blanks (35-36), colophon (37); limited edition of only 300 copies, this no. 269, signed by the artist. Villiers de L 'Isle-Adam
Joe D'Ambrosio, Sherman Oaks, CA. Sherman Oaks, CA: Joe D'Ambrosio, 1992. 24 pp. 6 1/4 x 9". LIMITED EDITION of 75 copies and 10 artist's proofs, this being #46, box binding with patterned floral cloth sides, a blue-grey cloth backstrip over a broad telescoping spine composed of five stepped planes, the central and highest of these surfaces with long vertical printed paper label, text printed on leaves with raised accordion portions, both raised and recessed portions with engraved illustrations, cloth inlays, or serigraphs, the recessed title page under a stretched netting meant to resemble opera hose, most of the leaves with decoratively cut curved and spiked edges, signed by the publisher on the colophon, accompanied by 6 pieces of epherma, including a typed letter signed by D'Ambrosio along with other interesting material, all in fine condition. This story of two Parisian prostitutes by the obscure French satirist Villiers de L 'Isle-Adam (1838 - 1889) is printed on paper made by Madeleine Pestiaux. Albert Sperisen was an advertising executive in San Francisco, widely known as "the Dean of San Francisco print production", and also the librarian of the Book Club of California from the 1950's until his death in 1998. A beautiful book with a unique Bay Area provenance. Joe D'Ambrosio (1934 - 2009) began designing books in 1969. His goal was to "create a visual environment for the written word". He lived in southern California for most of the 1980's and moved to Phoenix after the large San Fernando earthquake of 1989. Rigby Graham
Llandogo: The Old Stile Press, 1992. Condition: Fine - Signed. Number 146 of 150 copies, elephant folio size, 58 pp. Rigby Graham (1931-2015) was a landscape and topographical artist, book illustrator and muralist who worked within the British Romantic tradition. His work is distinguished by bold lines, a formalistic understanding of structure, and dramatic use of colour, alike to German expressionism. The text of this volume was conceived in hospital during an extended treatment for cancer, where he retreated into recollections of the past to escape the sterile detention of the infirmary; the overall structure of the book is built around that method of circumvention during a time of calamity. The feature of the book are the colour woodcuts, which include four double-page images composed with four to six blocks each; there are also five single-page images printed in three colours to give a glowing 'monochrome' effect. As Graham shares in his introduction: "Cuts would be the answer. Woodcuts. I had always like the stiff angularity of woodcuts. The wood was not only unyielding, it bit back with a ferocity more readily associated with a rabid dog. Perhaps it is because of our civilised pattern of living that we tend unthinkingly to look on many natural things as attractive and somehow imply, or suggest, 'gentle'. We imbue them at times with qualities they do not actually possess...." Here, then, is a travelogue of the mind, reflections on woodcuts and the images made using them, infused with the philosophical musings of a man whose body was recently "hacked at by surgeons" as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gould, John
Melbourne: Hill House, 1992. Limited facsimile edition, this copy is stamped no. 204 to the front paste-down; a fine copy, cloth very slightly marked, contents clean and tight, unmarked. 36 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. Original green Japanese Saifu cloth gilt. One of a series of remarkably exact same-size facsimiles of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Glover, Crispin
Volcanic Eruptions, 1992. A collection of first editions and ephemera by Crispin Glover, from the collection of filmmaker Trent Harris. Included are Glover's first three avant-garde books, "Rat-Catching," "Oak Mott," and "Concrete Inspection," all of which were issued in limitations of 1000 copies, and are in this case each the best possible copy, numbered "-01," "0," and "0" respectively, and inscribed in the year of publication (with inscriptions that are colorful to say the least). Also included is a proof of Glover's first book, "Rat-Catching," one of reportedly only a handful of copies created by Glover for promotion, in a much larger format than the resulting book, with each page in a plastic protector, bound with silver clasp-rings. Last is an original poster for a 1979 signing event for Glover's first book. Harris directed a trio of short films between 1979 and 1985 now known as "The Beaver Trilogy," all featuring an eccentric character named "Groovin' Gary," a resident of Beaver, Utah, with whom the director was obsessed. "Gary" played himself in the first film ("The Beaver Kid," 1979), and was then represented by Sean Penn in the second film ("The Beaver Kid 2," 1981), and finally by Glover in the third installment ("The Orkly Kid," 1985). Glover has continued to make books and films, along with live performance art, all of which challenge conventions and boundaries. His work has its roots in the avant-grade, the early work of Werner Herzog and Frederick Wiseman, and the his ongoing interest in the lives of American outsiders and outsider culture. A remarkable col … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burke, Clifford
Newark, Vermont: The Janus Press, 1992. First Edition. Songs written by Clifford Burke to drawings by Ruth Fine, with the book and structure by Claire Van Vliet. This is 86 of 150 copies signed by Burke, Fine, and Van Vliet. "In 1990, Fine sent her drawings of animal skulls to Burke and asked him to write poems to go with them. Text and image transport us into the realm of spirit and nature, reminded of Native American lore as we would be by bleached skulls in a dry desert - a liminal world of spirit and earth ... Each deckled sheet was printed whole with two drawings and two blocks of text, then folded in four and bound together with paper strips for alternating spreads of text and image. The paper stripping forms a spine at the center of the illustrated pairs of pages. The two word titles of the poems - 'Fire Song,' 'Wind Song,' 'Root Song' - straddle the fold, printed in a tiny point size and repeated in vertical columns, an echo that anchors the page without overwhelming it. Thus, the book opens like a series of spread wings. Letterpress in a delicate, capitalized san serif font that reflects the quality of the line drawings. Printed on thick, handmade paper the color of sun-bleached bones. Housed in a two-sided slipcase made of folded paper and folded skin the texture of a drum" (Califia Books). Forty French-folded unnumbered pages including covers. Eighteen polymer relief prints from drawings by Ruth Fine. 10¼ x 8 x 2", text printed damp from magnesium plates in black on Barcham Green Royal Watercolour Society paper; completely non-adhesive binding using MacGregor-Vin … [Click Below for Full Description]
