Harry Middleton
Stone Harbor: Meadowland Press, 1992. Condition: Fine in Fine Slipcase Limited to 500 copies, signed by the author on the limitation page. First edition. Frontis, line drawings. Black cloth with spine titles in silver. Housed in publisher's slipcase. Still In publisher's shrinkwrap, as new copy. Extremely scarce and unopened copy of an esoteric and reverberating classic in the practical and philosophical art of flyfishing. Middleton was a North American nature writer who hailed from the South, who was an award-winning outdoors columnist who wrote for various publications such as Southern Living and Louisiana Life. He lived but 44 years, dying of a suspected brain aneurism. "..At the time of his death at age 44 in 1993, Harry Middleton was working three jobs. He was a factory janitor, a grocery store stocker and a garbage man in suburban Birmingham, Alabama. He was also a fly fisherman and one of America's greatest writers, known for creative nonfiction and as a memoirist. Never heard of him, right? It could be that solitary activities combining athleticism, concentration and contemplativeness result in the deepest consciousness. Perhaps none fit this description better than fly fishing; certainly, no fly fisherman exemplifies the potential better than Harry Middleton. Fly fishing was as needful an element to Harry as oxygen is to the rest of us. All the way through an unusual life, fly fishing was much more to Harry than a hobby. It was a connection to all creatures and life beyond its typical experience. Fly fishing made living deeper to Harry than the activity of a rod an … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Allen Press
The Allen Press, 1992. Condition: Altogether offering a unique glimpse at the congenial disposition of Lewis and Dorothy Allen, whose private lives remain fairly abstruse.___ All the items are in fine/near fine condition; a few have minor creases to the edges, but almost every piece is clean and without wear, free of soiling; they came to us in a large mailing envelope addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Jack Aldridge, and were clearly kept well-protected, and cherished, by them. 17 pieces of ephemera of varying sizes, in original mailing envelope, many with hand-written notes from the Allens. Ethel Crockett-Aldridge was a prominent librarian in California. She (alone at first, and subsequently) with her second husband Jack Aldridge, were devoted collectors of The Allen Press limited editions. The correspondence in this small archive begins with Ethel Crockett in 1966, and continues through 1992, after her marriage to Jack. They were evidently members of The Book Club of California and The Roxburghe Club, with some of the ms letters and announcements referring to the clubs. The friendship between the Aldridges and the Allens appears to have begun with Ethel as a customer, and eventually developed into a close friendship with regular intimate dinners. The archive includes announcements, Christmas cards, ms notes, ms postcards and letters (on The Allen Press stationary), and one prospectus. Altogether offering a unique glimpse at the congenial disposition of Lewis and Dorothy Allen, whose private lives remain fairly abstruse. CONDITION: All the items are in fine/near fine condition; a fe … [Click Below for Full Description]

KUSAMA, Yayoi
Tokyo: Sogetsu Art Museum / Committee of the Exhibition of Yayoi Kusama, 1992. First Edition. Quarto. Errata page laid in. Bound in a brilliant red fuzzy felt; silver stamped titles to front and spine. In the publisher's acetate jacket. SIGNED by Kusama and dated 1998 in red marker to the verso of the front endpaper. Catalogue to accompany an important retrospective, one of a number of exhibitions in the late 1980's and early 1990's, culminating with the Japanese Pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale, that brought Kusama back to the international attention that has only grown to this day. A beautiful production, copies were bound in a number of jewel-toned felts. Most likely produced in small numbers and not distributed internationally, the book is uncommon. Since 1977, Kusama has been a voluntary resident of the Seiwa Hospital for the Mentally Ill; books signed by her are rare. A touch of fraying and dustiness to the bottom edge of the felt boards, otherwise fine in an acetate jacket with wrinkling and some surface rubbing at the bottom of the front panel. Number 269, quarto, 41 pp., signed by Francesco Clemente. Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (1885-1972) was a major figure in the early modernist movement; his early poetry was devoted to the development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. Of this work, Cathay, Chinese critic Wai-lim Yip writes: "One can easily excommunicate Pound from the Forbidden City of Chinese studies, but it seems clear that in his dealings with Cathay, even when he is given only the barest details, he is able to get into the central concerns of the original author by what we may perhaps call a kind of clairvoyance" (N.B., above info from Wiki). Joe D'Ambrosio, Sherman Oaks, CA. Sherman Oaks, CA: Joe D'Ambrosio, 1992. 24 pp. 6 1/4 x 9". LIMITED EDITION of 75 copies and 10 artist's proofs, this being #46, box binding with patterned floral cloth sides, a blue-grey cloth backstrip over a broad telescoping spine composed of five stepped planes, the central and highest of these surfaces with long vertical printed paper label, text printed on leaves with raised accordion portions, both raised and recessed portions with engraved illustrations, cloth inlays, or serigraphs, the recessed title page under a stretched netting meant to resemble opera hose, most of the leaves with decoratively cut curved and spiked edges, signed by the publisher on the colophon, accompanied by 6 pieces of epherma, including a typed letter signed by D'Ambrosio along with other interesting material, all in fine condition. This story of two Parisian prostitutes by the obscure French satirist Villiers de L 'Isle-Adam (1838 - 1889) is printed on paper made by Madeleine Pestiaux. Albert Sperisen was an advertising executive in San Francisco, widely known as "the Dean of San Francisco print production", and also the librarian of the Book Club of California from the 1950's until his death in 1998. A beautiful book with a unique Bay Area provenance. Joe D'Ambrosio (1934 - 2009) began designing books in 1969. His goal was to "create a visual environment for the written word". He lived in southern California for most of the 1980's and moved to Phoenix after the large San Fernando earthquake of 1989. Rigby Graham
Llandogo: The Old Stile Press, 1992. Condition: Fine - Signed. Number 146 of 150 copies, elephant folio size, 58 pp. Rigby Graham (1931-2015) was a landscape and topographical artist, book illustrator and muralist who worked within the British Romantic tradition. His work is distinguished by bold lines, a formalistic understanding of structure, and dramatic use of colour, alike to German expressionism. The text of this volume was conceived in hospital during an extended treatment for cancer, where he retreated into recollections of the past to escape the sterile detention of the infirmary; the overall structure of the book is built around that method of circumvention during a time of calamity. The feature of the book are the colour woodcuts, which include four double-page images composed with four to six blocks each; there are also five single-page images printed in three colours to give a glowing 'monochrome' effect. As Graham shares in his introduction: "Cuts would be the answer. Woodcuts. I had always like the stiff angularity of woodcuts. The wood was not only unyielding, it bit back with a ferocity more readily associated with a rabid dog. Perhaps it is because of our civilised pattern of living that we tend unthinkingly to look on many natural things as attractive and somehow imply, or suggest, 'gentle'. We imbue them at times with qualities they do not actually possess...." Here, then, is a travelogue of the mind, reflections on woodcuts and the images made using them, infused with the philosophical musings of a man whose body was recently "hacked at by surgeons" as … [Click Below for Full Description]
