Diamond, Jared
Harper Collins Publishers, New York, 1992. First edition of this early work by the award-winning scientist. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, warmly and lengthily inscribed by the author to fellow writer Peter Matthiessen on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Plenty of provocative ideas in this grand sweep of evolutionary biology and anthropology: not surprising for this MacArthur ``genius'' Award-winner, Natural History columnist, and UCLA Medical School physiology professor. With only 1.6 percent difference between the human genome and the genomes of two species of chimps, Diamond declares that we should call ourselves the third chimpanzee. "The Third Chimpanzee will endure" (Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Douglas Adams
Easton Press, 1992. Condition: Very Good. Mostly Harmless Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Book Five by Douglas Adams (signed) Frontispiece by Frank Mayo Introduction by James Gunn Easton Press First Edition Description: Leatherbound hardback book published by Easton Press in 1992. Bound in top grade turquoise leather with 22kt gold lettering and cover artwork. Hubbed spine, acid neutral paper with page edges gilded, satin moire endpapers, and a satin ribbon book mark sewn in. Unused publisher supplied bookplate laid in (not attached). Issued by Easton Press signed by the author on a special signature page without inscription or personalization. Synopsis: It's easy to get disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished due to a misunderstanding about space/time, the spaceship you are on crashes on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit-and immediately all hell breaks loose. Hell takes a number of forms: there's the standard Ford Prefect version, in the shape of an all-new edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and a totally unexpected manifestation in the form of a teenage girl who startles Arthur Dent by being his daughter when he didn't even know he had one. Can Arthur save the Earth from total multidimensional obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter, Random, from herself? Of course not. He never works … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolkien, J.R.R.; Lee, Alan (illustrator)
Harper Collins. J.R.R. Tolkien; Alan Lee (illustrator) (1992) ‘The Lord of the Rings‘, UK first three volume editions, first printings, published by Harper Collins. All three volumes are signed by illustrator Alan Lee. ‘Fellowship’ also includes a sketch drawn by Alan Lee. Beautiful high quality blue cloth volumes. Provenance: signed and sketched to us in person Condition: all three books are in fine condition with no previous owner’s scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. The dust jackets are fine as well, not price clipped. The original cardboard slipcase is included, but has split along the folds. That is not unusual and the reason why most sets lack the slipcase. After years of talks Alan Lee finally convinced Christoper Tolkien, J.R.R’s son and head custodian of his work to illustrate ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Tolkien’s best known and greatest fantasy novel of all time. In 1991, ‘LOTR’ was published for the first time as an Alan Lee illustrated edition and in a single volume. The three volume edition followed a year later which is friendlier to the reader and resembles more the original LOTR publication of the 1950s which was also done in three volumes. Christoper was so impressed of Alan’s visual interpretations that ‘The Hobbit’ was illustrated by Alan in 1997 as well. They both collaborated on Tolkien’s posthumous books, Christopher editing Tolkien’s unfinished tales, whilst Alan working on the illustrations (‘Children of Hurin’ (2007), ‘Beren and Luthien’ (2017), ‘The Fall of Gondolin’ (2018)). Alan’s work caught the eye of film director Peter Jackson, and Alan was in … [Click Below for Full Description]

KUSAMA, Yayoi
Tokyo: Sogetsu Art Museum / Committee of the Exhibition of Yayoi Kusama, 1992. First Edition. Quarto. Errata page laid in. Bound in a bright green fuzzy felt; silver stamped titles to front and spine. In the publisher's acetate jacket. Catalogue to accompany an important retrospective, one of a number of exhibitions in the late 1980s and early 1990s, culminating with the Japanese Pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale, that brought Kusama back to the international attention that has only grown to this day. A beautiful production; copies were bound in a number of jewel-toned felts. Most likely produced in small numbers and not distributed internationally, the book is uncommon. A hint of wear along the bottom edges, else fine in an acetate jacket with a few tiny wrinkles. Beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Cramer, Richard Ben
New York: Random House, 1992. First edition of "quite possibly the finest book on presidential politics ever written, combining meticulous reporting and compelling, at times soaringly lyrical, prose" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Ambassador Frank Wisner, Who's probably known enough Presidents to know What It Takes. Richard Ben Cramer Christmas 1999." The recipient Frank Wisner is a career diplomat who served as Ambassador to Zambia, Egypt, the Philippines and India. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. An American Iliad in the guise of contemporary political reportage, What It Takes penetrates the mystery at the heart of all presidential campaigns: How do presumably ordinary people acquire that mixture of ambition, stamina, and pure shamelessness that makes a true candidate? As he recounts the frenzied course of the 1988 presidential race -- and scours the psyches of contenders from George Bush and Robert Dole to Michael Dukakis and Gary Hart -- Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Richard Ben Cramer comes up with the answers, in a book that is vast, exhaustively researched, exhilarating, and sometimes appalling in its revelations. Stephenson wrote about the Macintosh that 34When the computer crashed and wrote gibberish into the bitmap the result was something that looked vaguely like static on a broken television seta snow crash34. Stephenson has also mentioned that Julian Jaynes book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind was one of the main influences on Snow Crash. Penick, Harvey; Jack Nicklaus; Betsy Rawls
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1992. First edition of the bestselling golf instruction book of all time. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Harvey Penick on the half title page. Additionally signed by Jack Nicklaus and Betsy Rawls on the front free endpaper. Fine in a fine dust jacket. First printings are rare, especially signed. The legendary Harvey Penick, whom Sports Illustrated called the "Socrates of the golf world," began his golfing career as a caddie in Austin, Texas, at the age of eight, and over the course of nearly a century worked with an amazing array of champions. In this classic book, which is named for the red notebook he always kept, Penick's simple, direct, practical wisdom pares away the hypertechnical jargon that's grown up around the golf swing, and lets all golfers, whatever their level, play their best.

Ford, Gerald R.
Oroville, CA: Butte College Press, 1992. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto, 119pp. Black morocco spine, title in gilt on spine, green cloth covers. In publishers cloth slipcase, near fine condition. Bookplate from James Strohn Copley, legendary newspaper publisher from San Diego and lifelong Republican. Signed limited edition of 50 copies, this being number 45, signed by President Gerald R. Ford on the half title. Not to be confused with a similar signed, limited edition publication of 200 copies of the same name. This edition was held for the author and includes a leather spine and slipcase. This address by Gerald Ford was given at Butte College in 1991. It addresses the War Powers Resolution (War Powers Act) which was enacted by congress over the veto of President Nixon. In 1973, tired of the Vietnam and Korean Wars, congress passed a new law that required a president seek a declaration of war by congress before sending troops into combat. While this law has never been challenged in the Supreme Court, President Ford contended that it was unconstitutional and hindered the ability of the executive to defend the nation. President Clinton and President Bush have both challenged the law with their actions in Kosovo and Iraq. A scarce edition.

Friedman, Milton & Rose
Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich Publishers, New York, 1992. First edition of this work by the Nobel Prize-winning economist on monetary history. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For Alan, some bedtime reading, Best regards Milton." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. From the Micronesian Yap islands' 12-foot stone "coins'' to today's paper currencies backed only by fiat, Nobel Prize-winning economist examines anomalies of world monetary history, including the effect of successive 19th-century gold ore discoveries and refining improvements on U.S. and British tender. He traces American currency's long, contentious gold-silver bimetalist saga, marked by the so-called Congressional coinage "crime of 1873'' and ending with William Jennings Bryan's unsuccessful "Cross of Gold'' presidential campaign in 1896. Friedman cites harsh lessons from postwar hyperinflation in many countries and declares that Roosevelt's 1933 silver-buying program may have skewed China's silver-based economy toward eventual communism. Uncontrolled money growth is the cause of inflation, the author stresses, and only monetary reform, despite undesirable side effects like unemployment, can cure it. Penick, Harvey; Jack Nicklaus; Betsy Rawls
Simon & Schuster, New York, 1992.
