Rumpole Of The Bailey : Rumpole And The Eternal Triangle

Thames Television, Teddington 1992 - 104 mimeographed script pp., unpaginated scene breakdown, unit list, and rehearsal room location, the whole secured with split pin to top left corner. McKern's numbered scene tags to leading edges. A well-preserved, near fine copy. First edition. LEO 'RUMPOLE' McKERN'S WORKING SCRIPT FOR SERIES SEVEN, EPISODE THREE OF RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY. WITH HIS NOTES, AMENDMENTS AND UNDERLININGS THROUGHOUT. Between 1978 and 1992, John Mortimer and Leo McKern collaborated on seven series of the television show Rumpole of the Bailey, adapted by Mortimer from his own books, and starring McKern in the title role. Although the show was a huge success, relations between its star and writer were often strained. McKern was frequently troubled by the growing realisation that he was going to be remembered for playing Rumpole on ITV rather than Iago at the RSC; Mortimer, while grateful to McKern for Rumpole's success, knew his star felt this way, and was understandably displeased. The relationship never became fond, but the two remained in touch after the series came to an end. Although the title page of this script announces this story as episode four of the seventh series, it was broadcast as episode three, on 12 November 1992. The Rumpole stories were all written originally for television, and later adapted by Mortimer for publication in book form. The stories in this, the final series of Rumpole, were published by Mortimer as Rumpole On Trial [Viking, 1992].

Un Coup de Des Jamais N'Abolira le Hasard

1992. Signed. (KELLY, Ellsworth) MALLARMÉ, Stéphane. Un Coup de Dés Jamais N'Abolira le Hasard. [New York]: Limited Editions Club, (1992). Folio (13 by 17-1/2 inches), original full black morocco, original felt-lined clamshell box. $3200.Signed limited edition of Mallarmé's enigmatic final poem, complemented by Ellsworth Kelly's stark folio lithographs, number 55 of only 300 copies signed by the artist.Mallarme's poems ""have a rare, evocative beauty which can be apprehended if not always comprehended; which make him the crown and conclusion of the Symbolist Movement"" (Harvey & Heseltine, 442). ""Some of Mallarmé's poems and prose writings are so obscure (the adjective 'hermetic' is frequently applied to them) as to defeat determined study. An extreme example is his last poem Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard, first printed in May 1897 in the review Cosmopolis. The size of the type and the arrangement of the words on the (double) page are continually varied in an attempt both to produce the effect of a musical score and to reproduce the 'subdivisions prismatiques de l'idée'"" (Harvey & Heseltine, 442). This lovely version, reproducing Mallarmé's own radical experiments with typesetting, was printed by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Hadley, Massachusetts on Velin BFK Rives paper, hand-set in Monotype Bodoni by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari at Golgonooza Letter Foundry; Bruce Porter of Testle Editions in New York City printed Kelly's dramatic black-and-white lithographs, also on BFK Rives Paper. Fine condition, an elegant production.

        Dettes

1992. First Edition . Signed. LEISER, Eric. The Dettes. A Catskill Legend. (Fishkill, New York): Willowkill Press, (1992). Quarto, original pictorial beige leather gilt, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label, elaborate wooden slipcase with inset shadow box and four hand-tied flies by the Dettes. $2500.Signed limited first edition of this photo-illustrated biography of the Dettes family of professional fly-tiers, letter ""O"" of only 26 copies signed by the author as well as Walt, Winnie, and Mary Dette, the ""First Family of Catskill Fly Tying,"" with this deluxe edition specially designed by Joan Stoliar, handbound in imported calfskin, and specially housed in a slipcase designed by Don Leydon from black walnut with an inset shadow box displaying four hand-tied flies by the Dettes illustrating the stages in tying the Hendickson fly, mounted with an excerpt for Smedley's Fly Patterns and their Origins.Written by Eric Leiser, this work focuses on a special Catskills family widely believed to be responsible for helping to spread the art of fly tying across the United States. ""Walt Dette, the Catskill Mountains fly tier who passed on his complicated art to future generationsÂ… was an exceptionally gifted fly tier. And for almost three-quarters of a century, he, along with his wife, Winnie, and their daughter, Mary, have been part of the tradition of Roscoe, a center of fly-fishing, and are the last of the renowned school of the Catskill fly tiers. Mr. Dette, along with Rube Cross, is a major link in a chain that reaches back to Theodore Gordon, long considered by many as the father of dry-fly fishing in this country. In 1928, when Mr. Cross was one of the acclaimed professional fly tiers in the East, Mr. Dette approached him with an offer of $50 if Mr. Cross would reveal the technical processes involved in the construction of his flies. ""He told me to go to hell,"" Mr. Dette said, ""even though I'd promised him I'd not tie commercially and thus compete with him, nor would I divulge his techniques to anyone else."" Dressing flies was a jealously guarded secret during that era. This did not discourage the young Dette. He began purchasing flies tied by Mr. Cross and others. While his soon bride-to-be, Winnie, took notes, young Dette meticulously untied the Cross flies, one turn of thread at a time, in order to learn their construction. Unlike Mr. Cross, however, Mr. Dette shared the procedures with any and all who asked. Thus, not only was a wealth of technical knowledge preserved but in his willing students it was also eventually spread throughout much of the country. There is no doubt that Mr. Dette has directly, or indirectly, affected all who fish with the fly todayÂ… In 1990, for example, the Eastern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers presented their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to 'Walt, Winnie and Mary Dette, the First Family of Catskill Fly Tying, for their untiring dedication to the sport of fly-fishing and their efforts to preserve the Catskill fly tying tradition.'"" (New York Times). Fine condition.

Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being.

London: Faber and Faber,, 1992. Octavo. Original Faber proof wrappers. Lightly rubbed at the ends and joints, minor stain to fore-edge at top corner, excellent condition. Presentation copy of the scarce uncorrected advance proof, signed by the author on the title page and inscribed to his friend Nick Gammage: "Nick's special copy with all its errors on its head, Greetings 25 Nov. 93". This "special copy" of Hughes's ambitious piece of mystic Shakespearean criticism appears to have been printed from a working proof which had thoroughgoing hand corrections by Hughes, reproduced here in facsimile. The association is superb: Gammage and Hughes's correspondence began when Gammage, then a 19 year-old student and fan, wrote to the poet for help on his dissertation. For twenty years Hughes used to write exhaustive letters to him, in which he expressed much of his thinking on literature and on life - in Gammage's words, his letters "were like triggers, as though he was using the letters to explore his thinking about his writing. He would often start by saying, 'Your question is impossible to answer', and then for six pages give the most brilliant answers." After the poet's death in 1998, Gammage published the memorial tribute The Epic Poise: A Celebration of Ted Hughes (Faber 1999).
