        Bibliografia geral portuguesa. Volumes I-III.

Lisbon, Imprensa Nacional, 1941-1944, 1983 [i.e., 1992?]. - 3 volumes. 4°, recent crimson half Oasis morocco, spines with raised bands in six compartments, gilt-lettered, original printed wrappers bound in. Uncut and partially unopened. In fine condition. c, 402 pp.; cxiv, 832 pp.; xlvii pp., (1 l.), 583 pp., (2 ll.). Profusely illustrated. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. An outstanding publication. The first 300 or so pages of volume I describe incunables printed in Portugal, with bibliographical references and collations. Volume II is on Portuguese authors published abroad, and describes many later editions as well as incunables. A number of works deal with early voyages and discoveries, including America, while others are of great interest as Sephardic Judaica or Hebraica. The illustrations include reproductions of title pages, pages of text and watermarks. Volume III, co-published with the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, deals with sixteenth-century Portuguese authors and anonymous works from Abarbanel to Amato Lusitano. The first two volumes, dealing with the fifteenth century, were published 1941-1944. Many more volumes were planned, but the project languished. Apparently a significant portion of the third volume was printed some years ago, while other parts were printed more recently; to the best of our knowledge, it was published only in 1992.*** Jorge Peixoto, Bibliografia analítica das bibliografias portuguesas 330 (for the first two volumes).         Un Coup de Des Jamais N'Abolira Le Hasard [WITH] A Throw of the Dice Never Will Abolish Chance

[New York]: The Limited Editions Club (1992), 1992. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Kelly, Ellsworth. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. 23 p. Signed by Artist. Limited Edition of 300 copies for sale, this no. 295, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST on the colophon page, with both the English translation and the monthly newsletter loosely laid in. Stephane Mallarme (Etienne Mallarme, 1842-1898) was a French symbolist poet whose work inspired Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism. This work, his last major poem, combines free verse with an unusual typographic layout; facing pages are meant to be read as a single panel, with the text flowing back and forth across the two pages, along irregular lines. The text of the main volume is entirely in French, with a small companion volume in wraps containing the English translation that follows Mallarme's typographic arrangement. Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015) created eleven lithographs to accompany the text; while his flat, monochromatic panels appear to be purely abstract, each draws on specific details in the text observed by the artist, and each challenges the viewer's perception and perceptiveness (N.B., above info from Wiki, monthly newsletter, and LEC web site). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full black Nigerian oasis goatskin over boards, gilt lettering on the spine, the lithographs bound in throughout the text; Monotype Bodoni, handset, printed by the Wild Carrot Letterpress on BFK Rives paper, elephant folio size (approximately 17" tall), unpaginated with 23 printed leaves, each printed only on one side, limited edition of 300 copies, this no. 295, signed by Ellsworth Kelly. The companion volume with the English translation has 10 leaves plus the wrapper. Box enclosing the volume is covered in black linen cloth, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, the inside lined with black suede. ***CONDITION: Fine, the leather binding still supple retaining its full, rich black colour, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings - crisp, as new. The clamshell box is also fine, unfaded and unfrayed; the monthly newsletter and companion volume are also fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. No. 196 of 200 for sale (plus 26 not for sale), signed by Ginsberg (with circled initials below). Written three years after the death of his mother, Ginsberg focused on a cryptic note left to him by her, the mother who had been hospitalized for mental illness for many years, and used that as his inspiration for the poem written in her honour. The volume contains, at Ginsberg's suggestion, two related poems that also relate to his mother. Bound into the volume, facing each other, are two lithographs by R.B. Kitaj, portraits of Allen and Naomi Ginsberg, picturing them both at about age 30; the lithograph of Naomi is signed in pencil by Kitaj. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in two colours of imported Japanese cloth, black with tan fibers and greyed blueish green, black lettering on the front, binding design unusual with a flap enclosing the fore-edge that folds into the front cover; cream endpapers, fore- and bottom edges uncut, copy number and Allen Ginsberg's signatures on the half-title page in pencil, his signature with his initials below enclosed in a circle, lithographs bound in after the introduction and before the poems with a tissue guard between the two prints; large quarto size (approximately 12.25" tall), pagination: (1)-18 being the preliminary pages and the introduction, sectional title for the lithographs (19), the two lithographs (20 and 21), blank (22), sectional title for the poems (23), 24-62 being the three poems, colophon (63), Imprint type hand-set, on T.H.         ONE FOOT IN THE MOUTH, ONE FOOT ON THE SHELF

(PETTIBON, RAYMOND). Pettibon, Raymond & Nelson Tarpenny. ONE FOOT IN THE MOUTH, ONE FOOT ON THE SHELF. NP: Superflux Publications, 1992. First Edition 1/100. 8vo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Artist's Book. Near Fine. np (36pp), 18 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Raymond Pettibon first came to prominence during the late-seventies with his raw, literary-inflected imagery for Black Flag, Sonic Youth, and SST Records. Over the subsequent decades, the erstwhile Southern California artist has deservedly become an international contemporary art icon. Limited to one hundred copies, "One Foot in the Mouth, One Foot on the Shelf" is his 1992 Superflux-published artist book cum 'zine collaboration with "Master" Nelson Tarpenny that reproduces eighteen psychologically-charged drawings. A most handsome, guaranteed authentic example of this exceedingly uncommon Pettibon tour de force (entry number one hundred and one in Uwe Koch and Roberto Ohrt's "A Catalogue Raisonné of Artists' Books by Raymond Pettibon, 1978-98") HAND NUMBERED "72/100" in black ink by the artist on the front cover, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Original Scrapbook of Collages Given to Charles Plymell

Np, 1992. 9 x 12" sketchbook of Strathmore 60 lb archival acid free paper, ring bound, with one hundred sheets, 79 of which feature collages which are either glued or taped down with clear tape - a few using red tape. Inscribed in pencil at the first leaf, alongside the first collage in Pelieu's hand: "to Chas Plymell 92 Xmas." Fine. Provenance: from the collection of Gregory Smith, of Mother Road Productions, via the trade. Smith was a friend of Plymell's who published the 1989 edition of his Last of the Moccasins under that imprint. An astonishing and previously unknown collection of collages by Pelieu. Pelieu and his partner Mary Beach increasingly worked in collage from the 90's onward. Their work was featured in several gallery shows in Europe and memorably in an excellent 2001 show and exhibition catalog curated by the late John McWhinnie. In his short essay in that catalog Thurston Moore had perhaps the best summation of their work - "Collages of real life both delightful and deadly, horrible and high, jazzed and disjointed, jinxed and holy. . . The Art and writings of Mary Beach and Claude Pelieu remain as visionary grace, codes and mirrors to spark song as revolution."The 79 collages in this collection have a speed and cohesiveness that emerges upon successive readings. Occasionally collages echo each other by reference to certain themes, or even physically as clippings and fragments of pages are reincorporated into later works. The collages incorporate fragments of fashion, pop culture, and even the art world, notably in a collage which features one of Warhol's Marilyn's, and one which incorprates a reproduction of a work by Barbara Kruger along with a quote on her work. The self-referential quality extends to the Beat Generation, with a collage that includes a well known photograph of Jack Kerouac, smoking and painfully aware of the camera - perhaps a commentary on the public perception of a movement that Plymell was such an important part of?

        Martin Kippenberger: Hotel Hotel

1992. KIPPENBERGER, Martin. Hotel-Hotel. 494 pp. Illustrated with 245 reproductions. 4to., bound in original wrappers in a new cloth box. Koln: Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther Konig, 1992.|~||~||~||~||~||~||~||~| |~||~||~||~||~||~| This is the first volume of Kippenberger's trilogy Hotel-Hotel, Hotel-Hotel-Hotel and No Drawing No Cry. The books each consist of collections of drawings Kippenbergerer made on stationary from hotels around the world. Kippenberger made hundreds of drawings on hotel stationery, a body of work that comes across as a kind of travel diary. Although he often lived in hotels for weeks or even months, he didn't stay at all the hotels whose notepaper he used, often picking it up from other sources. The stationery became, like so many things he encountered, a readymade material for his art. One of an edition of 950, this one unnumbered. A fine copy, rarely found thus.
