Autograph musical manuscript signed from his Urban Songs, 1992

1 page. Large oblong folio (ca. 292 x 403 mm.). For soprano, instruments and synthesizer. Precisely notated in ink, pencil and coloured pencils, identified and signed at conclusion by the composer: "vit: schetsontwerp 'Urban Songs' (1992)," with his additional signature in heavy black marker beneath. & & Creased at central fold. In very good condition overall. . An award-winning, avant-garde Swedish composer active in the Netherlands, "Torstensson stands completely on his own in the Dutch musical world. His aesthetic point of departure is strictly modernistic. Stylistically there is a relationship with Varèse and Xenakis. His compositions, regardless of the strength of the orchestra, are radical explorations of musical boundaries, in which extremes are sought in a detailed manner in terms of dynamics, registers, density, stasis and movement, degrees of dissonance and consonance, and physical and spatial effect... The first outline of his compositions is graphic: only the overall progression and the associated stress curves are indicated. In the subsequent phases (Torstensson speaks of ‘generations’) more and more detailed decisions are taken with regard to timbre, gestures, rhythm, dynamics, articulation and registers..."& & "Torstensson’s output is highly consistent. All his works are written for very specific performers, with the sole exception of the orchestral work Stick on Stick. ‘Families’ of compositions, in which an overall compositional idea is elaborated in an increasingly radical way, are also characteristic: Solo, Licks & Brains I, Licks & Brains II; Hamra, Urban Solo, Urban Songs, Urban Extra." Erik Voermans in Grove online & & An attractive item, executed in the composer's unique and graphically interesting colourful notation.

Illustrated with a mono photo portrait of Drury for the frontispiece and 94 reproductions of his prints. A fine copy in a fine dustwrapper. ----- Paul Drury was at the centre of the revival of the pastoral tradition at Goldsmith's College in the 1920's, along with Robin Tanner, Graham Sutherland, Bouverie Hoyton & William Larkins, among others, rejecting the plein air tradition of etching which was prevalent at the time. The limited edition wood-engraving that is included with the book is of particular importance, being one of the earliest works by any of the Goldsmiths' group that can really be described as pastoral.

Le Bateau Ivre (The Drunken Boat)

West Stockbridge, New York: Thornwillow Press, 1992. Folio. (86)ff. One of 250 copies. Signed by the artist and designer, Thierry Despont. Text in French, with an English translation by Louise Varèse, the English set below the French on the page. Contains twenty-eight drawings by Despont, printed using offset lithography by Susan Medlicott. Type and printing by Michael and Winifred Bixler and Luke Pontifell. Printed on heavy, sumptous cotton rag paper. This copy has been bound by Sylvia Rennie in full blue calf with a design of seven stiff, curvilinear shapes of polished blue, black, and white calf mounted to the front cover as a sculptural element evoking waves and sails. The endpapers are reddish brown brushed suede, very heavy, and the top edge of the book is stained black, with subtle swirling patterns in the stain that pick up the theme of one of the illustrations. The spine letters are onlays of black leather, and this is repeated on the spine of the book's clamshell box, which is specially designed to house this sculptural binding. Sylvia Rennie was a student of Hugo Peller, the Swiss master binder, and her work has been shown in a one-woman show at Kroch and Brentano in Chicago, in the Guild of Book Workers traveling exhibitions, at the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts, and other universities and galleries. A very fine copy of an elegant production, both inside and out.

Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being

London: Faber and Faber [0-571-16604-0] 1992, 1st British Edition. (Hardcover) xv, 517pp. Near fine in near fine dust jacket. Octavo. Navy cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Light wear to ends of spine. Clean, tight text block. There are a few small notes on the rear paste-down presumably from the previous owner refering to the text. In dust jacket, not price clipped, with only light wear to edges and some very mild chipping to ends of spine with one small closed tear. Placed loosely inside are two clean clipped articles relating to Hughes. A fantastic association copy. Double Signed and Inscribed by the author. Signed by the author in black ink on half title and inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page. The inscription reads "For Patricia Kathleen, with my very best wishes from Ted, 12th August 1993". Edward James "Ted" Hughes (17 August 1930 – 28 October 1998) was an English poet and children's writer. Critics routinely rank him as one of the best poets of his generation. Hughes was British Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death. This critical magnus opus looks at Shakespeare's use of the two most significant poems in the archaic world and argues that they later provided the template for the construction of every one of Shakespeare's plays. The inscription is written to Patricia Kathleen Page, commonly known as P. K. Page, who was a Canadian poet. She was the author of over 30 published books: of poetry, fiction, travel diaries, essays, children's books, and an autobiography. She was also known as a visual artist, who exhibited her work as P.K. Irwin at a number of venues in and out of Canada. Her works are in permanent collections of National Gallery of Canada and Art Gallery of Ontario. Inscribed to P.K. Page..

Reagan Lists His Administration's Greatest Achievements

Reagan had a way of reaching out to people that made him friends across much of the political spectrum. He was also seen as a principled man and people trusted him to do what he thought was right and not be controlled by interest groups. However, it seemed to some that his successor owed too much to the religious right, an impression heightened by the Republican Convention in 1992. That event moved life-long Republican Raymond Doig, a film executive at 20th Century Fox where he served for years as president and chief executive officer of Fox International, to write a heart-felt letter to Reagan on August 20, 1992. In the letter, a copy of which is present, he explained that he feared for the direction his party was taking under Bush, and said that Reagan's continued leadership was needed. "...I believe that we have lost direction and have become captive of the Radical Religious Right. Your speech on the opening night of the party's convention was deeply felt and appreciated by this deeply conflicted Republican. You helped me to focus on what is good and just about America. It was always easy to vote for you and embrace your view of America and the world, knowing that you represented the values and ideals I share...Our nation is at a troubled period...We need Reagan leadership not reactionary responses to issues that have been left untended these last four years...If only I had the choice of again voting for you, I would not be leaving the party..." This letter obviously mattered to Reagan, who not only answered it but had the response hand-delivered. & & Autograph Letter Signed on his embossed personal notecard, 2 pages small 8vo, August 31, 1992, pointing out what Reagan obviously considered his administration's greatest achievements, revealing to Doig that George Bush played an integral part in them, and making clear that jumping to the Democrats, who had opposed everything Reagan had tried to do, was no solution. "Thank you for your letter and kind words about my speech. But I must take exception to your concern about our party. We must stay together and prevent a takeover by the Demos. They have had a majority in the Congress for almost all of the last half century. In my 8 years as governor and 8 years as president, I was serving with a Democratic Congress and had to do battle with that Congress. For example, I submitted a budget to the Congress every year as I'm supposed to do. In every one of those 8 years the Congress put my budget on the shelf and submitted a "Continuing Resolution" to me as a substitute. In every instance their substitute called for more spending except in the military, where they reduced the services to a ridiculous level. When I became President, I discovered more than half our military aircraft on any given day could not fly for lack of spare parts. Contrary to the media, Bush as vice president participated in all the things we did, such as the tax reductions, created 19 million new jobs in the economy...eliminated many useless Federal regulations, etc. He was a major participant in the things we did. We were opposed by the Democrats in everything we accomplished. Again thanks for your kind words." & & Many vice presidents have had no authority and little in the way of accomplishments (Eisenhower, when asked by a reporter if he could think of something Nixon had done as vice president, said he could if given a week to think about it). This letter testifies that Bush was an active participant in Reagan's work, and shows that Reagan was sincerely working for Bush's reelection. Perhaps most valuable is Reagan's list of his accomplishments, as in such a situation the most important things are the ones that would come first to mind. There were three: tax cuts, job creation and reduction in Federal government controls. This historically important letter is crucial to understanding both Reagan's view of his main accomplishments and Bush's role within his administration.

        Correspondence Archive

1992-2011. Fifty pieces of correspondence from Josef Skvorecky (Czech author of The Engineer of Human Souls, among many others) to his eventual friend, writer and musician Anthony Weller. Includes: ¶ 23 typed letters signed by Skvorecky; 1 typed note signed; 2 typed postcards signed; 3 autograph notes signed; 3 autograph postcards signed; 5 signed cards; 12 emails; ¶ one unsigned letter which is together with the unpublished 2007 translation (bound computer printout, double-spaced, rectos only, 280pp.) of the author's novel Encounter in Prague, with Murder. ¶ Much of the correspondence falls in the years 2001-2007, a time frame that included: ¶ Weller providing an Afterword to a new edition of Skvorecky's The Bass Saxophone [Toronto: L&OD/Key Porter, 2001], a copy of which is included; ¶ Weller writing an essay, in 2007, on the adaptations of The Bass Saxophone (five-pages, computer printout), also included; ¶ and Skvorecky soliciting advice from Weller on the adequacy of the above translation of Encounter in Prague, on which Skvorecky's and his wife's (Zdena Salivarova) names are crossed out as authors and replaced by hand with the pen name "Josephine Salivar." ¶ Weller's retained email response is included, as are 14 retained copies of letters from Weller to Skvorecky. Weller and Skvorecky shared a passion for jazz as well as both being writers, so their correspondence -- which at first is quite cordial, almost formal -- eventually developed into a friendship based on intellectual closeness and trust. Skvorecky is widely considered one of the most important Czech writers of the postwar and Soviet era. Choosing a self-imposed exile to Canada after the failure of the Prague Spring movement in 1968, he founded a press, 68 Publishers, to publish exiled Czech and Slovak writers whose works were banned in communist Czechoslovakia, including Vaclav Havel, the future President of the Czech Republic, and Milan Kundera, whose Unbearable Lightness of Being was first published in Czech by 68 Publishers. Skvorecky himself was a Nobel Prize nominee in the 1980s. The correspondence spans more than 20 years, up to a point two months before Skvorecky's death. The two writers discuss music, writing, publishing, their health, their travels, and a range of other subjects, exchanging CDs and books (not present here), and discussing their own works as well. Also included is the Czech edition of Nachod, 1254-2004 by Lubomir Imlauf and Stanislav Bohaldo, inscribed by Skvorecky "For Anthony my friend," in 2004, with an additional note saying it is also available in English. Nachod was Skvorecky's birthplace and featured prominently in much of his work. In all a revealing look at one of the major writers of the 20th century, writing candidly to a friend, confidant and fellow writer, along with a typescript of an unpublished translation of one of his novels. All items fine. .

Birds of Australia Volume I (Birds of Prey)

Hill House, Melbourne 1992 - First limited facsimile edition thus. 36 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps; this is copy no. 113. Original green Japanese Saifu cloth gilt. Fine condition with minimal wear only, contents clean and tight, unmarked, no inscriptions. One of a series of remarkably exact same-size facsimiles of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production."
