Booked to Die: A Mystery Introducing Cliff Janeway

Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Scribner 1992 - Here is a stunning copy of the bibliophile's bibliophilic mystery that has been signed by the author. Here is a First Edition, First printing of the novel that introduced us to Cliff Janeway. It is a highly entertaining read and one of the more-revered and most sought after books in the mystery genre. Very light toning and minimal soiling to the text block. No markings to text. The only flaws are two minor bumps to the bottom corners of the front and rear boards. Spine is straight and book has been very carefully read. no dog ears and no tears. Full number line is present. Charles Scribner's Sons. 1992. DJ is beautifully bright and mylar-protected. No chips or tears, very light shelf wear. The only discernible wrinkling is at the top front of DJ near spine-4 very tiny spots that are visible only with close scrutiny and at the bottom corner of front DJ where book was bumped. Light rub to bottom corner of rear DJ and a small nick to interior front flap directly above the $19.95 issue price that is present. This is a spectacular copy of an important title for any serious collector. The book has been flat-signed on the title page by John Dunning. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Cover Title in Japanese: Higashiyama kaii daihyosaku sen nihon no shiki] Selected Works: Four Seasons of Japan

[Tokyo]: [Yomiuri Shimbun], 1992. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Large folio (57cm x 45cm). Blue linen clamshell box with Japanese characters on paper label and blind-stamped on upper board, English title stamped in blue on upper board. First and only edition. Pagination: 4 loose leaves of front matter, almost entirely in Japanese, followed by 4 folders, each representing a season, and each with a b/w pictorial index on the front; each folder contains 6 matted and framed but unmounted color lithographs (except for the "Autumn" folder, which is lacking two plates -- see below), for a total of 22 lithographs (each measuring 52cm x 42cm). There is additionally one final leaf consisting of a chart giving original sizes and dates for each work. All of this is protected by a lidded corrugated-cardboard box with paper title labels on cover and bottom edge. Clamshell is very near fine, with only some very slight fraying and a little separation at two corners. Folders and lithographs bright, clean, and beautiful, with a little soiling on two frames in the "Spring" folder -- but the lithographs themselves are unscathed; the "Autumn" folder is lacking plates #4 and #6. The corrugated box is still solid and functional, but not pretty, with some scraping, a few shallow puncture wounds, and some soiling to the cover label. Overall, a stunning set, and quite scarce (not to be confused with the far more common "Four Seasons of Kyoto") -- one copy only in OCLC (at the National Diet Library), no auction records, and none that we've been able to find offered for sale in the trade for the last several years. Contains works produced between 1947 and 1986, including "Vibrant Greens" (1982), "Forest with White Horse" (1972), and "Afterglow" (1947).

        Romantic Music: Sound and Syntax

Schirmer Books. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1992. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 9780028720654 . This specific hardback book is in near fine condition with a hard board cover that has sharp edges/corners with no bumping or scuffing and has a tight binding. The pages are clean, crisp, unmarked and uncreased with no underlining, highlighting, or notes but for a small area (1/8 - 1/16 of an inch) of creasing to the top edge of about 70 pages. This is minor damage and in no way interferes with the text, but is worth mentioning and is the only defect that takes this book out of the like new rating. The dust jacket is in fine condition with only the slightest bit of cover or edge wear. We package all books in custom cardboard book boxes for shipment and ship daily with tracking numbers.; "This book is divided into thirteen chapters. Chapter 1 surveys critical comments dealing with qualities of sound in the ninteenth century. Chapter 2 examines the continuity between Classic and Romantic texture and sound. Specific examples drawn from piano, orchestral, and chamber music literature are discussed in chapters 3-5. Chapter 6 explores the uses of harmonic color in the Romantic repertoire. Chapter 7 reviews the tradition of the period form in Western music. Chapter 8 discusses rhetorical reductions, a technique that factors out the changes introduced by the new sound values to uncover the conventional outlines of the music. Chapter 9 examines symmetrical arrangements in the music of Johannes Brahms, Giuseppe Verdi, Felix Mendelssohn, and Robert Schumann. Chapter 10 discusses the modification of symmetry by sustained sounds and harmonic progressions in the music of Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, Frederic Chopin, and Richard Wagner. Chapter 11 explores the extensions of periodic symmetryin the music of Hector Berlioz, Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt, Brahms, and Wagner. The last two chapters treat small forms and sonata forms in the music of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Liszt, and Mahler. - taken from the dust jacket" ; 9.29 X 6.30 X 1.10 inches; 348 pages .

All three volumes signed by the reclusive author on the half-titles. The author's reclusive nature and his distaste for the spotlight have made his signature uncommon. Century|~| London: Century. (1992). The very scarce third novel in the author's acclaimed Inspector Rebus series. Several years after this title was published, when the Rebus series became a huge critical and commercial success, it was reissued as Tooth and Nail. This copy is signed by the author on the title page. Faint discoloration and small bump to upper rear corner, mild age toning to pages; still a very near fine copy in a fine dust jacket. . Snow Crash

Bantam Spectra, New York 1992 - Uncorrected Proof Copy. This book is in Near Fine condition and was issued thus without a dust jacket. This is a trade paperback. The book was produced in both a hardcover edition of approximately 600 copies and a trade paperback edition of a larger print run. Not only is the hardcover copy of this book a difficult find, but this book became an instant classic in the speculative fiction / cyberpunk sub-genres. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have a bit of light bumping and rubbing. Plain cream colored card stock covers have red gilt lettering to spine and front cover of book. The gilt lettering has started to rub. The front cover of the book has some light ground-in finger dirt and there are two very tiny spots of discoloration. The text pages are clean and bright. The foredge of the text block has one very light spot of discoloration. Stephenson pulls his ideas and themes from all areas: history, cryptography, philosophy, computer programming, religion, archeology, and many more. Snow Crash, while not the first to use Avatar as a computerized golem of a person, did make the term commonplace. He also coined the term Metaverse and indeed, the word Snow Crash. The impact of this book has had both in the science fiction world and in the world of computers cannot be denied. It was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke award and the British Science Fiction award. "Snow Crash is a vision of the world as it will be: franchines line the street to the horizon, the freeways are privately owned, and the computer-generated universe - virtual reality - is more livable than the real world. But a strange new designer drug called Snow Crash is making zombies of everyone, and a deadly computer virus is striking down hackers everywhere. The last great hope in this post-modern landscape is a new kind of hero: Hiro Protagonist, - Last of the freelance hackers, Greatest swordfighter in the world, Stringer CIA -, - as his business card reads." Autograph musical manuscript signed from his Urban Songs, 1992

1 page. Large oblong folio (ca. 292 x 403 mm.). For soprano, instruments and synthesizer. Precisely notated in ink, pencil and coloured pencils, identified and signed at conclusion by the composer: "vit: schetsontwerp 'Urban Songs' (1992)," with his additional signature in heavy black marker beneath. & & Creased at central fold. In very good condition overall. . An award-winning, avant-garde Swedish composer active in the Netherlands, "Torstensson stands completely on his own in the Dutch musical world. His aesthetic point of departure is strictly modernistic. Stylistically there is a relationship with Varèse and Xenakis. His compositions, regardless of the strength of the orchestra, are radical explorations of musical boundaries, in which extremes are sought in a detailed manner in terms of dynamics, registers, density, stasis and movement, degrees of dissonance and consonance, and physical and spatial effect... The first outline of his compositions is graphic: only the overall progression and the associated stress curves are indicated. In the subsequent phases (Torstensson speaks of ‘generations’) more and more detailed decisions are taken with regard to timbre, gestures, rhythm, dynamics, articulation and registers..."& & "Torstensson’s output is highly consistent. All his works are written for very specific performers, with the sole exception of the orchestral work Stick on Stick. ‘Families’ of compositions, in which an overall compositional idea is elaborated in an increasingly radical way, are also characteristic: Solo, Licks & Brains I, Licks & Brains II; Hamra, Urban Solo, Urban Songs, Urban Extra." Erik Voermans in Grove online & & An attractive item, executed in the composer's unique and graphically interesting colourful notation.

Le Bateau Ivre (The Drunken Boat)

West Stockbridge, New York: Thornwillow Press, 1992. Folio. (86)ff. One of 250 copies. Signed by the artist and designer, Thierry Despont. Text in French, with an English translation by Louise Varèse, the English set below the French on the page. Contains twenty-eight drawings by Despont, printed using offset lithography by Susan Medlicott. Type and printing by Michael and Winifred Bixler and Luke Pontifell. Printed on heavy, sumptous cotton rag paper. This copy has been bound by Sylvia Rennie in full blue calf with a design of seven stiff, curvilinear shapes of polished blue, black, and white calf mounted to the front cover as a sculptural element evoking waves and sails. The endpapers are reddish brown brushed suede, very heavy, and the top edge of the book is stained black, with subtle swirling patterns in the stain that pick up the theme of one of the illustrations. The spine letters are onlays of black leather, and this is repeated on the spine of the book's clamshell box, which is specially designed to house this sculptural binding. Sylvia Rennie was a student of Hugo Peller, the Swiss master binder, and her work has been shown in a one-woman show at Kroch and Brentano in Chicago, in the Guild of Book Workers traveling exhibitions, at the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts, and other universities and galleries. A very fine copy of an elegant production, both inside and out.
