        POOLS

New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 208 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the most beautiful photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes, is infinitely superior to, and should not be confused with the 2007 Reissued Edition. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A stunningly beautiful production by Sam Shahid: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 7 pounds. Linen cloth boards with white titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who&#39;s Who of 20th-century photography. The production values cannot be improved upon: Printed on very thick, 100-pound Rapoport Lithographic Stock Paper in the United States to the highest standards. At the time the book was published, the retail price was $100 because of the paper Klein insisted upon. According to art book publishers, the book would be impossible to re-produce in exactly the same way today without incurring $500 for each copy in paper cost alone. In pictorial DJ, which features the iconic "Pool" photograph by Ralph Gibson, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the most sumptuous, sensuous, and sensational collection of swimming-pool photographs of the 20th century. They include images by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, William Klein, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Greg Gorman, and Bruce Weber, among many others. "Pools" owes an immense debt to Slim Aarons&#39; ground-breaking books, "A Wonderful Time" and "Once Upon A Time". Aarons showed images of the American elite relaxing by the pool. Their cumulative effect was such that the swimming pool became a concrete symbol of American culture (Kelly Klein devotes eight pages to Aarons&#39; "pool" photographs). The pool is American leisure at its most Edenic and erotic. But it goes deeper, as it were, than that: With its languid indolence, its emphasis on "immersion" and "slowing down", it is the very opposite of our "work" and "productivity" ethic. One gets nothing done in a pool; that&#39;s the whole point. Kelly Klein&#39;s eye is impeccable, but then again, many of the greatest photographs in the medium&#39;s history were taken in swimming pools. Esther Williams&#39; "underwater palace" pool, which cost her $50, 000 in 1952, a princely sum then, will set one back by at least $500, 000 today. OMG. Thank you, Kelly, for this blissful book instead. Klein published a "follow-up" volume, "Pools: Reflections", in 2012, bringing her rich subject to our time. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. <b><i> This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Kelly Klein. This title is a modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the true First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Beware: Most copies available online have major flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 187 plates. Some of the world&#39;s greatest photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO KELLY KLEIN&#39;S "POOLS: REFLECTIONS" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0679409130.

THREE LIONS AND THE CROSS OF LORRAINE, BARTHOLOMAEUS ANGLICUS, JOHN OF TREVISA, JOHN TATE, WYNKYN DE WORDE, AND DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM

Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 1992. quarter leather, paper over boards. 23772|33382|61557|88867/CA. Bird & Bull Press. tall 4to. quarter leather, paper over boards. 40, (22) pages. Limited to 138 numbered copies, this work was printed at the Bird & Bull Press by Henry Morris using Van Dijck types by M&H Type on Frankfurt mouldmade paper. Three Lions and the Cross of Lorraine, Bartholomaeus Anglicus, John of Trevisa, John Tate, Wynkyn De Worde, and De Proprietatibus Rerum contains four essays written for this volume, 19 facsimiles of the woodcuts from DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM, and an actual leaf, inserted in a mylar folder, taken from a defective copy of DE PRORIETATIBUS RERUM (circa 1495 and printed by Wynkyn de Worde). This book was the first English book printed on paper made in England and the use of Tate&#39;s paper is proudly cited in the epiloque of the actual book. After Tate&#39;s death in 1507, three failed attempts to make paper in England happened during the 16th century but English papermaking was not established until John Spilman&#39;s successful mill in 1585. Hills has written about John Tate and his papermill. Such a leaf is rare, for it is highly unlikely another incomplete copy of Bartholomaeus will be on the market again. Henry Morris in his foreword says about this book, "I knew it would probably be the most important work I could ever hope to produce in the field of papermaking history." Loosely inserted is a printed note from the publisher commenting on the small limitation.

Booked to Die: A Mystery Introducing Cliff Janeway

Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Scribner 1992 - Here is a stunning copy of the bibliophile's bibliophilic mystery that has been signed by the author. Here is a First Edition, First printing of the novel that introduced us to Cliff Janeway. It is a highly entertaining read and one of the more-revered and most sought after books in the mystery genre. Very light toning and minimal soiling to the text block. No markings to text. The only flaws are two minor bumps to the bottom corners of the front and rear boards. Spine is straight and book has been very carefully read. no dog ears and no tears. Full number line is present. Charles Scribner's Sons. 1992. DJ is beautifully bright and mylar-protected. No chips or tears, very light shelf wear. The only discernible wrinkling is at the top front of DJ near spine-4 very tiny spots that are visible only with close scrutiny and at the bottom corner of front DJ where book was bumped. Light rub to bottom corner of rear DJ and a small nick to interior front flap directly above the $19.95 issue price that is present. This is a spectacular copy of an important title for any serious collector. The book has been flat-signed on the title page by John Dunning. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Cover Title in Japanese: Higashiyama kaii daihyosaku sen nihon no shiki] Selected Works: Four Seasons of Japan

[Tokyo]: [Yomiuri Shimbun], 1992. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Large folio (57cm x 45cm). Blue linen clamshell box with Japanese characters on paper label and blind-stamped on upper board, English title stamped in blue on upper board. First and only edition. Pagination: 4 loose leaves of front matter, almost entirely in Japanese, followed by 4 folders, each representing a season, and each with a b/w pictorial index on the front; each folder contains 6 matted and framed but unmounted color lithographs (except for the "Autumn" folder, which is lacking two plates -- see below), for a total of 22 lithographs (each measuring 52cm x 42cm). There is additionally one final leaf consisting of a chart giving original sizes and dates for each work. All of this is protected by a lidded corrugated-cardboard box with paper title labels on cover and bottom edge. Clamshell is very near fine, with only some very slight fraying and a little separation at two corners. Folders and lithographs bright, clean, and beautiful, with a little soiling on two frames in the "Spring" folder -- but the lithographs themselves are unscathed; the "Autumn" folder is lacking plates #4 and #6. The corrugated box is still solid and functional, but not pretty, with some scraping, a few shallow puncture wounds, and some soiling to the cover label. Overall, a stunning set, and quite scarce (not to be confused with the far more common "Four Seasons of Kyoto") -- one copy only in OCLC (at the National Diet Library), no auction records, and none that we&#39;ve been able to find offered for sale in the trade for the last several years. Contains works produced between 1947 and 1986, including "Vibrant Greens" (1982), "Forest with White Horse" (1972), and "Afterglow" (1947).

        Romantic Music: Sound and Syntax

Schirmer Books. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1992. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 9780028720654 . This specific hardback book is in near fine condition with a hard board cover that has sharp edges/corners with no bumping or scuffing and has a tight binding. The pages are clean, crisp, unmarked and uncreased with no underlining, highlighting, or notes but for a small area (1/8 - 1/16 of an inch) of creasing to the top edge of about 70 pages. This is minor damage and in no way interferes with the text, but is worth mentioning and is the only defect that takes this book out of the like new rating. The dust jacket is in fine condition with only the slightest bit of cover or edge wear. We package all books in custom cardboard book boxes for shipment and ship daily with tracking numbers.; "This book is divided into thirteen chapters. Chapter 1 surveys critical comments dealing with qualities of sound in the ninteenth century. Chapter 2 examines the continuity between Classic and Romantic texture and sound. Specific examples drawn from piano, orchestral, and chamber music literature are discussed in chapters 3-5. Chapter 6 explores the uses of harmonic color in the Romantic repertoire. Chapter 7 reviews the tradition of the period form in Western music. Chapter 8 discusses rhetorical reductions, a technique that factors out the changes introduced by the new sound values to uncover the conventional outlines of the music. Chapter 9 examines symmetrical arrangements in the music of Johannes Brahms, Giuseppe Verdi, Felix Mendelssohn, and Robert Schumann. Chapter 10 discusses the modification of symmetry by sustained sounds and harmonic progressions in the music of Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Schubert, Frederic Chopin, and Richard Wagner. Chapter 11 explores the extensions of periodic symmetryin the music of Hector Berlioz, Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt, Brahms, and Wagner. The last two chapters treat small forms and sonata forms in the music of Mendelssohn, Brahms, Liszt, and Mahler. - taken from the dust jacket" ; 9.29 X 6.30 X 1.10 inches; 348 pages .

The Border Trilogy: All the Pretty Horses / The Crossing / Cities of the Plain (3 volumes)

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1992,1994,1998. First editions. Hardcover. Three volume set. 301,425, 291pp. Octavo [22 cm] 1/4 black cloth over matching boards. All three volumes signed by the reclusive author on the half-titles. The author&#39;s reclusive nature and his distaste for the spotlight have made his signature uncommon. The Border Trilogy helped to cement the author&#39;s legacy. The first volume in the trilogy, All the Pretty Horses, won the National Book Award. All three volumes were bestsellers. A nice signed set .
