BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA (VOL. 1) (AUTHENTIC FACSIMILE EDITION) Birds of Prey

Hill House. New;. 1992. Hardcover. 0947352163 . 36 Plates. BRAND NEW! This is not a mere reproduction. This is an exact facsimile of an original held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. It is not a reproduction, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the originals. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. This facsimile carries faithfully every spot, mark or stain as the original. It also carries the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. The color printing is so accurate that, from behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile. This facsimile is exactly the same size as the original (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). It is cased-in and bound between 4 mm. The boards are covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the book, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. This book is individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. ; Vol. 1 .

Faksimile - Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame du Duc de Berry. Bibliothèque nationale, Paris, Nouv.acq.lat. 3093. (2 Bde.).

Luzern, Faksimile-Vlg., 1992 - 4° (28 x 20 cm), 252 S., mit Pinsel- und Blattgold versehene Miniaturen; Kommentarbd.: 254 S., Rotes OLdr. goldgeprägt ( Kommentarbd. HLdr.) in Acrylglasschuber, Rücken minimal beschienen, sonst tadellos. Jahrhundert in Familienbesitz.

The International Contest between Heenan & Sayers

Victor Dubreuil, New York - VICTOR DUBREUIL'S TROMPE L'OEIL PAINTING OF A LITHOGRAPH Oil on canvas Canvas size: 31 1/2" x 41 1/2" Frame size: Frame size: 36 1/8" x 46 3/8" Signed l.r.: V. Dubreuil Provenance: Private collection Exhibitions: The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, The Artist at Ringside, 1992, exh. cat. p.72 (illus. in color on cover); The National Art Museum of Sport, Indianapolis, Indiana, June 1-August 2, 1992; Spanierman Gallery, LLC, New York, Tranquil America: A Century of Painting, 1840-1940, November 4, 2000-February 28, 2001 Literature: The Artist at Ringside exh. cat. (The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, 1992), p.72 (illus. in color on cover); Tranquil America: A Century of Painting, 1840-1940 (Spanierman Gallery, LLC, New York, 2000), pl.9, color illus. Victor Dubreuil's painting of The International Contest between Heenan & Sayers cleverly recreates the 1860 lithograph by the same name. It is a remarkable trompe l'oeil or "trick of the eye" and an exact replica of the print on canvas. The artist's intentions behind creating such an image are not readily apparent. The painting may be a reference to the class struggles prevalent during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Boxers were mainly from working class backgrounds and in America pugilism became a popular avenue for African-Americans eager to escape slavery. In contrast, the spectators were from the wealthier classes and it is known that among the crowd watching the Heenan and Sayers fight were Charles Dickens and William Thackeray. The painting may also be a comment upon Anglo-American relations during the second half of the nineteenth century, as the global power of imperial Britain was threatened by its colonial dominion. The heavyweight title fight between the English boxer Tom Sayers and his American counterpart John .C. Heenan was fought in 1860. It took place at Farnborough, England because pugilism was still officially outlawed in the United States. However, it was the first title fight to draw attention form both sides of the Atlantic. Heenan outweighed Sayers by 46 pounds and towered six inches above him. Up to this time America had not been regarded as a serious contender for the world title, but the discrepancy in the weights was expected to give Heenan a real chance. The fight was bloody from the beginning, in the sixth round, Sayers broke his right arm blocking a punch and in the eighth, Heenan broke his left hand. In the 37th round someone cut the ropes and the referee deserted. The fight continued for five more rounds until it ended in a draw. Among the most enigmatic of the American trompe l'oeil still-life painters of the late nineteenth century was Victor Dubreuil, born in New York City to French émigré parents. While Dubreuil's training is unknown, his name appears in Manhattan directories in 1886. Dubreuil had a satirical streak, frequently painting dollar bills to underscore America's preoccupation with wealth in the age of the robber barons. His works show a preoccupation with the plight of the working man through the policies of government.

The Heritage Press New York (copyright 1964). Bookbinding by Linda Sandlin with her miniature binder’s label on the inner back cover, reading: Sandlin’s Books & Bindery Valparaiso IN[diana]. Ca. 1992. - Size of binding: 7 1/8” x 10 1/4”, 221pp., illustrated with full page color illustrations & black & white drawings by Clarke Hutton. A copy of the Heritage Press edition of "The Prince and the Pauper", in a handcrafted design binding by Linda Sandlin. Bound in full gray (goatskin) leather with onlays of various color leathers; the spine features a blue leather title label with silver-stamped title & red leather “stitching” around the label. Front cover features the Prince’s crown in onlays of red & black & blue & tan leathers with metallic-surfaced leather details in gold & silver; Pauper’s coat in brown & blue leather outline, with special “patches” on coat & stick in brown leathers. The back cover (shown in the scan along with the spine) features the Prince's robe in dark purple & tan leathers with details or highlights in blue, red, & (feathered) black & silver & gold metallic-surfaced leathers; with gold-surfaced sword & Pauper's hat in dark blue with details in green, tan, brown & specially produced "stitched patch" on hat. Gray leather turn-ins & inner hinges with cream-colored endpapers. Applied, multi-colored headbands & multi-colored, sprinkled top edge. White, watered-surface cloth wraparound chemise. Chemise shows crease along spine area, a few dust spots. Bookbinding in fine condition. Artist’s descriptive statement: “It was one of those things where I had an idea in my head and had to get it on a copy of that book before it drove me crazy. Unfortunately, the best copy I came across was this Heritage press volume. The headbands are onlayed, and the the patches on the coat and hat are reverse side leather. All the ‘stitching’ on the patches and title slip are of red Nigerian goat strips which are tucked top and bottom to better simulate sewn threads, and to prevent peeling. The top edge is spattered to match the headbands. If you are familiar with the story you will remember that the two little boys (one a prince & one a pauper) trade places thus, the princely robe with the pauper hat, and the pauper coat with the prince’s crown.” (1993). This is one of Linda Sandlin's larger size handcrafted design bindings made around 1992. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A box (size 320 x 460 mm)with leather-covered spine with gold tooling, contains the codex and a text volume of 290 pages printed on handmade paper and bound in Fabriano paper. The Squarcialupi Codex is the vastest and most refined of all manuscript anthologies of the Italian music copied in Florence during the first twenty years of the fifteenth century. The over 300 pieces it contains – to almost half of which only this source bears witness – are the work of nearly all the most renowned composers of the fourteenth century. In this edition the codex is accompanied by a volume with studies (translated into English) edited by Franco A. Gallo. '
