THREE LIONS AND THE CROSS OF LORRAINE, BARTHOLOMAEUS ANGLICUS, JOHN OF TREVISA, JOHN TATE, WYNKYN DE WORDE, AND DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM

Bird & Bull Press, Newtown, PA 1992 - tall 4to. quarter leather, paper over boards. 40, (22) pages. Limited to 138 numbered copies; this is copy "1," this work was printed at the Bird & Bull Press by Henry Morris using Van Dijck types by M&H Type on Frankfurt mouldmade paper (Berger A53). Three Lions and the Cross of Lorraine, Bartholomaeus Anglicus, John of Trevisa, John Tate, Wynkyn De Worde, and De Proprietatibus Rerum contains four essays written for this volume, nineteen facsimiles of the woodcuts from De Prorietatibus Rerum, and two actual leaves, inserted in a mylar folder, taken from a defective copy of De Prorietatibus Rerum (circa 1495 and printed by Wynkyn de Worde). This book was the first English book printed on paper made in England and the use of Tate's paper is proudly cited in the epiloque of the actual book. After Tate's death in 1507, three failed attempts to make paper in England happened during the 15th century but English papermaking was not established until John Spilman's successful mill in 1585. Hills has written about John Tate and his papermill. Such a leaf is rare, for it is highly unlikely another incomplete copy of Bartholomaeus will be on the market again. Henry Morris in his foreword says about this book, "I knew it would probably be the most important work I could ever hope to produce in the field of papermaking history." This copy has two leaves from the "tabula" in the pocket in the back pocket. With a postcard addressed to Morris and related ephemera inserted. quarter leather, paper over boards [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths, Volume 29 The Role of Rare Earths in Catalysis

North Holland. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 436 pages. Dimensions: 9.2in. x 6.5in. x 1.3in.Among the numerous applications of the rare-earth elements, the field of catalysis accounts for a large number. Catalysis represents approximately 20 of the total market sales of rare earths worldwide. As a matter of fact two main applications have been prominent in the last decades: zeolite stabilization for fluid cracking catalysts, and automotive post-combustion catalytic treatment. The oldest use of rare earths in catalysis deals with the structural and chemical stabilization of the zeolites for petroleum cracking applications. For a long time this has been an area of application for non-separated rare earths. The addition of several percent of rare earths in the pores of the zeolite results in a strong surface acidity, which is essential for an efficient conversion of high-weight molecules into lighter species, like low-octane fuel, even in the very aggressive conditions of the petroleum industry. The popular demand for high-quality air in spite of the traffic congestion in large cities resulted in larger and larger constraints in the emission exhaust from cars. Thus highly efficient catalysts have had to be designed, and due to the combination of its redox properties and very good thermal stability, cerium oxide has been since the beginning, early in the 1980s, a major component of the three-way catalysts (TWC) now used in all modern gasoline cars. The future of rare earths in catalysis is probably bright. The fact that approximately 400 patents are applied for yearly in the area since 1992 is an illustration of a very active area. Usage of rare earths in catalysis is expected to grow due to their highly specific properties. Instead of the physical properties used in electronic applications, one deals now with redox properties, water and thermal stability, coordination numbers and so forth. The rare earths are so specific in these properties that their use can hardly be avoided, not only for the beauty of academic studies but also for the development of industrial applications with immediate influence on everyday life. Careful control of the synthesis conditions and the definition of optimum composition in each case are the keys to the preparation of highly performing compounds for catalytic applications. They must actually be considered as high performance products with functional properties, and not just chemical species. Chapters devoted primarily to catalysis have been published in earlier volumes of the Handbook. In this volume several more are added. The first is an extension of the earlier chapter 43, on interactions at surfaces of metals and alloys, to reactions such as hydrogenation, methanation, ammonia synthesis, saturated hydrocarbon reactions, dehydrogenation of hydrogenated materials, hydrodesulfurization, and carbon monoxide oxidation. The second chapter reports on the wide variety of catalyzed reactions involving metals and alloys in the innovated form of metal overlayers or bimetallic compounds with some transition metals produced from ammonia solutions. This is followed by a chapter on catalysis with mixed oxides usually having perovskite or perovskite-related structures. Then follows a comprehensive discussion on the background and current role of cerium oxide and associated materials for post-treatment of exhaust gases for pollution control. These three-way catalysts (TWC) are designed to render harmless the CO, NOx, and unburned hydrocarbons from internal combustion engines. The next chapter considers the wide field of zeolite catalysts containing rare earths from their historic use in petroleum refining in the 1960s to other petrochemical and fine chemical applications today. The final chapter documents the use of the triflates (the trifluoro-methane-sulfonyl group which is a hard Lewis acid in both aqueous and o This item ships from multiple locations. This suite of ten is issued in a numbered edition of 25, plus two publisher's proofs, one artist's proof, one museum proof, and one archival proof. Total impressions: Thirty suites of 10. This copy is the Artist's Proof. 16.75 x 21.125 x 2" (box), 15.5 x 19.75" (paper); ten folios plus colophon and title page. Ten monoprints hand printed by the artist. Each monoprint printed on paper handmade by David Kimball at Magnolia Editions (Oakland, California). Text printed with Centaur type on BFK Rives paper by Alan Hillesheim at Digger Pine Press (Berkeley, California). Laid into a portfolio box lined with Japanese chiri paper and covered with Mexican amate paper. Each monoprint signed by the artist. Each suite signed by the artist and the master printer on the colophon. Each folio contains a separate monoprint inspired by a poetic fragment by Nahuatl-speaking poets excerpted from 16th-century transcriptions by Spanish missionaries. The poetry appears on the interior page of the folio in both Nahuatl and English. [Nahuatl, the language of the people popularly known as Aztecs, has been spoken in Mesoamerica since at least the 7th century CE.] Colophon: "Published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first meeting between Europeans and the inhabitants of the New World. Artwork by Gustavo Rivera. Text by Nahuatl-speaking poets excerpted from the transcriptions of the Spanish missionaries, Friars Bernardino de Sahagun, Adres de Olmos, Toribio de Benavente, Motolinia, and other informants, who between the years of 1524 and 1585 chronicled the wealth of Nahuatl poetry which survived the Conquest of Mexico. Edited and translated by Michael Dunev." Miguel Leon Portilla, "Flower and Song: Poetry" from Nahuatl Philosophy (quoted on the reverse of the title page of this suite): "One of the most profound of Nahuatl metaphors 'Flowers and Songs,' is repeated countless times throughout Nahuatl poetry as being the highest form of expression upon earth. Considered in essence to be the only way through which Truth could be expressed, this concept was so significant to the Nahuas, that 'poetic knowledge coming from the interior of Heaven,' was the key with which to penetrate the realm of Truth. Indeed it can be stated that all of Nahuatl thought had its roots deep in the wellstream of poetry." Roberto Trujillo, "Unique and Limited-Edition Artists' Books" in Gustavo Ramos Rivera: "Much of Ramos Rivera's art clearly evinces his experiences and cultural background from Mexico, and this is most evident in his work for the portfolio Xochitl in Cuicatl. ... "Ramos Rivera has always loved poetry. He told me of the ways that poetry and poets have affected his work. ... For Ramos Rivera, the processes of creating art and writing poetry are similar: 'Relationships between images and language are very interesting to me. Some sentences in poetry are like condensed paintings. Haikus, for example - you hear in the rhythm of the words the drop of water, or the bird that flew away. And the same thing happens in painting, only visually.'

Edited and translated by Michael Dunev."Miguel Leon Portilla, "Flower and Song: Poetry" from Nahuatl Philosophy (quoted on the reverse of the title page of this suite): "One of the most profound of Nahuatl metaphors 'Flowers and Songs,' is repeated countless times throughout Nahuatl poetry as being the highest form of expression upon earth.
