Typed Letter, Signed ("Samuel R. Delany"), to science fiction author Tom Disch, discussing science fiction criticism and offering excuses and abject apologies for his delay in returning the typescript of a book of collected criticism ("The Village Alien", not present) sent to him by Johns Hopkins U.P. for evaluation, which Delany had neglected for almost two years

Amherst, MA, 2 october 1992 - An interesting and digressive letter: "Dear Tom, "At long last I'm getting a manuscript back to you - with a long and unhappy tale. "In 1990, Johns Hopkins University Press sent me the enclosed manuscript of your essays, The Village Alien, to review. I had agreed to on the phone. It arrived a few days later. Of course I read it instantly. My basic feeling was pretty much what my feeling has been about everything you've ever written. Sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, page by page, the pieces were such a delight, the sheer joy of their endlessly energetic surfaces absolutely warranted their publication. "But, as you can see in their accompanying letter, they'd asked me what I thought of the content and coherence of the pieces as a book . . . As critics of science fiction, Tom, you and I - as you know- are polar. And after I had written some thirty-seven pages of scattered (and, when I read them over, rather incoherent) notes on part one alone . . . Well, I decided I better put it down, let it rest, then come back to it. "And therein began a process of procrastination and delay -" A long digressive series of excuses follows, explaining that the press had inexcusably sent him the only copy of the MS, and eventually concluding with: "Alas, for all my high dudgeon with Johns Hopkins, I have been inconsiderate - and I apologize. Two years is an unconscionable time for anyone to keep any manuscript for any reason. And if I've endangered the project, I'm mortally sorry, Tom. Really I am." (DISCH, THOMAS M.) 4to. 6 pp. Computer typescript with occasional manuscript corrections. With a letter to Delany and enclosure from Johns Hopkins University Press dated 17 April 1990. Fine

Garton & Co. London. 1992 - FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (11 X 8.5 inches). LIMITED EDITION. One of only 50 copies. Original wood engraving (again one of just 50, numbered and initialled by the printer) in a pocket inside the rear board. Also included with the book is an amendment to the catalogue which was issued as 6 stapled A4 sheets and featuring revisions by Alan D. Guest. Illustrated with a mono photo portrait of Drury for the frontispiece and 94 reproductions of his prints. A fine copy in a fine dustwrapper. ----- Paul Drury was at the centre of the revival of the pastoral tradition at Goldsmith's College in the 1920's, along with Robin Tanner, Graham Sutherland, Bouverie Hoyton & William Larkins, among others, rejecting the plein air tradition of etching which was prevalent at the time. The limited edition wood-engraving that is included with the book is of particular importance, being one of the earliest works by any of the Goldsmiths' group that can really be described as pastoral.         Booked to Die

New York:: Scribner,, 1992. 0684193833. A Fine, tight, perfectly square copy in a Fine, unclipped dj. Signed and dated by Dunning on titlepage. Dunning, twice nominated for the Edgar, deserves to win one for this Denver cop-turned-bookman tale--a lively, seductive primer on how to open a bookstore, spot a first edition, warehouse it, price it, and enjoy it for its own sake. Cliff Janeway quits the force when he is suspended pending the outcome of brutality charges brought by his nemesis, Jackie Newton. Long a collector and frequenter of Denver's Book Row, Janeway rents space, hires the charmingly efficient Miss Pride as his assistant, and opens Twice Told Books. And, on his own time, works on a case that the Denver force has no leads on: the murder of book scout Bobby Westfall. As Janeway goes deeper and deeper into the book business, he manages to pinpoint Bobby's last day--the book dealers he sold to, the collector he bought from, and the big score he was double-crossed out of. Then a book-scout friend of Bobby's and the estimable Miss Pride are executed at Twice Told Books, and Janeway ups his investigative pace, which involves meetings (and romance) with a highly secretive rare-book dealer; scrutiny of a collection appraisal; and schmoozing with the owners along Book Row, until an alibi, like some book spines, cracks. Janeway, who can be tough, sensitive, and passionate, is a credible hero, both as cop and as book-lover. Moreover, the mystery holds its own with the atmospherics..
