A unique collection of inscribed first editions and ephemera by Crispin Glover, from the collection of filmmaker Trent Harris, including Rat Catching, Oak Mot, and Concrete Inspection

Los Angeles: Volcanic Eruptions, 1992. A collection of first editions and ephemera by Crispin Glover, from the collection of filmmaker Trent Harris. Included are Glover's first three avant-garde books, "Rat-Catching," "Oak Mott," and "Concrete Inspection," all of which were issued in limitations of 1000 copies, and are in this case each the best possible copy, numbered "-01," "0," and "0" respectively, and inscribed in the year of publication (with inscriptions that are colorful to say the least). Also included is a proof of Glover's first book, "Rat-Catching," one of reportedly only a handful of copies created by Glover for promotion, in a much larger format than the resulting book, with each page in a plastic protector, bound with silver clasp-rings. Last is an original poster for a 1979 signing event for Glover's first book. Harris directed a trio of short films between 1979 and 1985 now known as "The Beaver Trilogy," all featuring an eccentric character named "Groovin' Gary," a resident of Beaver, Utah, with whom the director was obsessed. "Gary" played himself in the first film ("The Beaver Kid," 1979), and was then represented by Sean Penn in the second film ("The Beaver Kid 2," 1981), and finally by Glover in the third installment ("The Orkly Kid," 1985). Glover has continued to make books and films, along with live performance art, all of which challenge conventions and boundaries. His work has its roots in the avant-grade, the early work of Werner Herzog and Frederick Wiseman, and the his ongoing interest in the lives of American outsiders and outsider culture. A remarkable collection of items by one of a challenging and significant artist, and an important association with one of his earliest collaborators.

ITURI. The Distribution of Polychrome Masks in Northeast Zaire

Munich 1992 - 348 pages, 66 full-page color photographs of masks, 64 smaller color photographs, 16 b/w masks, 5 pages of color maps, 2 double-page color maps, 11 pages of maps, fold-out ethnic map in color in rear pocket. Cloth cover. Mint condition. Written somewhat like a good detective mystery, the author takes us step by step as he uncovers the masking tradition of a people who live mainly in an area in northeastern Zaire known as Ituri, and among whom the Ndaaka are the central ethnic unit. Virtually nothing had been known of the art of the peoples of Ituri, and in this fascinating tale we learn how their art has been recently discovered/rediscovered, and we see examples of the splendid masks that were uncovered. The text takes us into the villages from which the masks emerged and then discusses the masks and the rituals in which they were used. The photographs are splendid; the excellent text is in English and German [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Essence of Beeing

The Sherwin Beach Press, Chicago 1992 - Frontispiece and five full page illustrations by Alice Browon-Wagner, decorative initials coloured in gold and bee ornaments in the text. Folio. [340 x 250 x 15 mm]. Bound by Tracey Rowledge in 2010 (signed and dated inside rear cover) in black goatskin, the front cover with the title tooled in gilt using repeated impressions of a single basket-weave tool and a bee over the letter "i", smooth spine, yellow endleaves, uncut edges. Contained in a black cloth drop-over box, lined with light brown paper, the spine lettered in gilt on a black goatskin label. No. 127 of 200 copies. As stated in the colophon: "Work was begun on the book in 1980. Bob McCamant designed it, set the first few pages, and printed most of the pages of type. Kate Friedman set a few more pages. All the rest were set by Alice Brown-Wagner. Albert Richardson drew the bee ornaments and the drop capitals. Cheryl Towler printed most of the bee ornaments. Jennifer Hughes came along at the end and finished everything". Credit is due to all of them for a delightful production. Tracey Rowledge studied Fine Art at Goldsmith's College, London, and Fine Bookbinding and Conservation at Guildford College. She is a founding member of the international bookbinding collective Tomorrow's Past and a member of the independent artists group 60/40. She wrote about this binding: "A lot of decisions have gone on under the cover of this book, that's what fascinates me about binding books; it's so technical and so process driven. To get the right balance in my work, I have to keep focused on what I want the book to look and feel like; this thinking is based on my response to what the book is about and what structural demands I need to consider. Then there is the surface of the object, what will my mark be, the mark that will show to others. The image I created for this book draws the content on to the cover, whilst enabling me to continue my exploration of mark-making. The image appears spontaneously drawn and yet it is gold-tooled: a process that employs exacting skill, is utterly precise and couldn't be further removed from the marks it recreates".

In the critical election year of 1992, Ronald Reagan lists his administration's greatest achievements, while defending the record of George H. W. Bush's Vice Presidency: "He was major participant in the things we did."

n.p., August 31, [1992]. 6.25" x 4.25". "Autograph Letter Signed “Ronald Reagan,” 2 pages, on a 6.25"" x 4.25"" card with gold gilt Presidential seal, August 31, [1992], to 20th Century Fox executive, Raymond Doig, listing his administration's accomplishments and defending the work of his Vice President, George H. W. Bush. Very Fine.Reagan writes, in full: “Thank you for your letter and kind words about my speech. But I must take exception to your concern about our party. We must stay together and prevent a takeover by the Demos. They have had a majority in the Congress for almost all of the last half century. In my 8 years as governor and 8 years as president, I was serving with a Democratic Congress and had to do battle with that Congress. For example, I submitted a budget to the Congress every year as I’m supposed to do. In every one of those 8 years the Congress put budget on the shelf and submitted a “Continuing Resolution” to me as a substitute. In every instance their substitute called for more spending except in the military, where they reduced the services to a ridiculous level. When I became President, I discovered more than half our military aircraft on any given day could not fly for lack of spare parts. Contrary to the media, Bush as vice-president participated in all the things we did, such as the tax reductions, created 19 million new jobs in the economy, lowered taxes, eliminated many useless Federal regulations, etc. He was major participant in the things we did. We were opposed by the Democrats in everything we accomplished. Again thanks for your kind words.”This letter was a response to heart felt August 20th 1992 letter from Raymond Doig, a film executive at 20th Century Fox and a life long republican. Many Vice Presidents have had not authority and little in the way of accomplishments (Eisenhower, when asked by a reporter if he could think of something Nixon had done as Vice President, said he could if given a week to think about it). This letter testifies that Bush was an active participant in Reagan’s work, and shows that Reagan was sincerely working for Bush’s reelection. Perhaps most valuable is Reagan’s list of his accomplishments, as in such the most important things are the ones that would come first to mind. There were three: tax cuts, job creation and reduction in Federal government controls. "

        Livro de Lisuarte de Abreu.

Lisbon, Comissão Nacional para as Comemorações dos Descobrimentos Portugueses, 1992. - Folio (30.5 x 21.3 cm.), publisher's sheep, spine decorated in blind, with raised bands in five compartments, crimson leather lettering piece in second compartment from head, gilt short-title and date, covers also decorated in blind, pictorial endleaves. Profusely illustrated in color. As new. 55 pp., (1), 19, 92, 1 blank, (1) ll. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, one of a small but unspecified number of special copies in a publisher's leather binding. Magnificently produced full-color facsimile of the original manuscript in the Pierpont Morgan Library. Besides much other data, it includes an illustrated relation of the India fleets, from that of Vasco da Gama (1497-1499) until the voyage of D. Jorge de Sousa (1563). Only two manuscripts with this sort of illustration are known to exist: the other one, the "Livro das Armadas" in the Academia de Ciências, Lisbon, covers the period 1497 to 1567, but lacks the fleet of 1517.The Morgan manuscript consists, effectively, of three parts. Part I contains a group of texts, copied no doubt by order of Lisuarte de Abreu, including a diary of the voyage of the nau @Rainha from Lisbon to Goa in the fleet commanded by D. Constantino de Bragança in 1558. D. Constantino paused for 18 days in Mozambique, during which time he sent a messenger-ship to Sofala, mainly to obtain information about Turkish movements. Lisuarte de Abreu was a member of this mission. In the same part of the manuscript is another description of the same voyage, this time in the form of a "relation." There are also copies of various letters and documents of the period.Part II is a list of the governors and viceroys of India to 1558, with unusually bold and striking full-page color portraits of these officials.Part III, perhaps the best-known part, contains color representations of the ships that made up the various fleets, with the names of the captains in almost every case. There are also illustrations of naval battles. This part of the manuscript was made by order of the governor Jorge Cabral, in 1550, but the illustrator continued his work up to the 1563 fleet, and included naval engagements, especially those led by D. Fernando de Monroy and D. Diogo de Noronha against Turkish galleys. Several of the fleets stopped in Brazil on the outward voyage, beginning with that of Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500, making this a crucial document for the early history of that country. The late Professor Luís de Albuquerque provided an introduction (pp. 11-31), which is followed by Maria Luísa Esteves' transcription of the text (pp. 33-55). *** [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
