MAIL ART]: 19 ISSUES OF "BRAIN CELL", By Ryosuke Cohen, each issue SIGNED by the artist. (Issues numbered 202-220 created in 1991 are being offered here)

1991. 1991 - 1991. 1991. Fine. - sc A collection of 19 color folio broadsheets, each measuring 11-3/4 inches in height by 16-1/2 inches in width. Each broadsheet is an individual print composed of art work sent to Cohen by mail artists from around the world. These contributions consist of rubber stamps, stickers, photos, postage stamps, signs, address cards, business cards, logos, drawings and cartoons. Each contribution is pasted or printed by Cohen onto the sheets to form large, brightly colored collages. Each is signed in ink by Cohen on the front and numbered in pencil on the verso. The broadsheets being offered here have never been folded. There are a few minor creases, else near fine.Among the hundreds of mail artists represented on these sheets are:Ray Johnson (the Father of mail art), Bruno Capatti, Byron Black, Klaus Groh, Arki Melandri, Zhurba (Alexander), Fa Ga Ga Ga, Bruno Chiarlone, Giovanni Strada, Ruud Janssen, Jorg Seifert, Edward Plunkett, Reed Artemus, Kees Francke, Cesar Figueiredo, Michael Lumb, Calum Selkirk, Jeanne-Claude & Christo, Barry Edgar Pilcher, and "Vote Andy" stamps (by Gerard Barbot?). A Junior High School art teacher who has become a leading figure in the field of mail art, Ryosuke Cohen was born in Osaka, Japan in 1948. His family name is normally romanized as "Koen" but, on the advice of a friend, he adopted the English spelling "Cohen". Cohen describes his work as Mail Art Networking--a form of artistic activity which allows the artist to "deny the authority of the traditional art world", does away with the conception of "copyright" and lets them freely exchange their work and collaborate with one another. In June 1985 he initiated a major mail art project "Brain Cell", which by now has thousands of participants in more than 80 countries. Cohen commented in 1985: "I'll title my work 'Brain Cell" because the structure of the brain through a microscope looks like the diagram of the Mail Art network. Thousands of neurons clung and piled up together are just like Mail Art network, I believe".Cohen invites mail artists around the world to send him a 30 x 42 cm. art work. These contributions, which include rubber stamps, stickers, photos, postage stamps, signs, address cards, business cards, logos, drawings and cartoons, are pasted or printed by Cohen onto 12" by 16" sheets to form a large, brightly colored collage, which he compares to a rain forest where "numerous species.cohabit harmoniously; ferns and mosses parasitic to the gigantic trees, very tiny insects that hide themselves under the fallen leaves, insects camouflaging in dead leaves and twigs against the enemies, puny insects swarming together as a threat, birds displaying their existence with colorful feathers and a shrill cry and many other mammals and birds." A copy of the finished sheet, which is printed in an edition of 150 signed and numbered copies, is mailed to each participant along with a list of addresses of the other collaborators. New editions are projected to be published every eight to ten days. As of January 2012, there have been 813 issues. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock. A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK.. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/No Dust Jacket. Elephant Folio.

        My Sister - Life

The Limited Editions Club (1991), [New York] - Limited edition of 250, this no. 65, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his novel, Doctor Zhivago - it was smuggled out of the USSR and published in Milan in 1957, earning Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. This work, My Sister, Life, was his first published collection of poems and is considered one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Controversial when it was first published, five years after the October Revolution of 1917, the revolutionary spirit pervades the poems - not in the political sense but in the spirit of beginning again. The artist, Yuri Kuper (b. 1940), has worked in several mediums. His work for My Sister-Life recalls the Russian Constructivists' radical, dynamic, geometric abstractions in his use of strong diagonals and primarily geometric forms. Kuper has exhibited at galleries in Europe and the United States, and his work forms part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Moscow Museum of Fine Arts, and the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris (N.B., above info from Wiki and the LEC newsletter). ***DESCRIPTION: Half-bound with a grey Nigerian oasis goatskin spine and fore-edges, author's name in Cyrillic embossed in black on the spine, the boards covered in hand-made paper made by cutting Russian newspapers into minute pieces which were then incorporated with the rags and cotton pulp, with individual Cyrillic letters floated into the mixture in order to complete the process; fore- and bottom edges uncut, endpapers and text pages of the same hand-made paper as that covering the boards, six full-page, tissue-guarded etchings by Yuri Kuper bound in throughout the text; type Monotype Scotch Roman, handmade paper as referred to above, elephant folio size (approximately 19" tall), pagination: (i-iv), (1)-81, blank (82), colophon (83); limited edition of 250 copies, this no. 65, signed by the artist on the colophon page. Monthly newsletter loosely laid in. Publisher's slipcase covered in grey linen cloth, lined with light grey velveteen. ***CONDITION: Fine, the leather spine and corners are smooth and supple, the colour of the spine deep and true (not sunned), the paper boards not rubbed; with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; two miniscule shallow scrapes to the fore-edge of the back board, else fine. The newsletter is also fine, with no folds, creases or edgewear. The slipcase is fine as well, strong and sturdy, the cloth covering without blemish. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that due to the large size and weight of this volume, additional postage may apply; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Album of 12 paintings on pith paper. N. p., 19th century.

1991. 12 watercolours (ca. 222 x 340 mm) on pith paper mounted on album pages with blue silk ribbon. Bound in silk-covered boards. Oblong folio. These highly coloured depictions were produced in large numbers in the port of Canton, China during the second and third quarters of the 19th century. A variety of subjects was created, mostly illustrating Chinese customs or practices seemingly exotic to Western eyes. Made primarily for the export trade, they are mostly the work of anonymous artists, a description of Lam Qua's studio in the 1840s noting that 'Here.... are painted those little silk covered albums which are sent to England and the United States and even to France and contain representations of animals, flowers, landscapes... etc.' (cf. Carl Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1991, p. 200). Boards chipped and frayed with some loss to silk covers. Some paintings with some minor cracking.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Original screenplay for the 1991 film)

Manhattan Beach, CA: Lightstorm Entertainment, 1991. Revised draft script for the 1991 film. Pages watermarked "T20029" and bearing the ownership watermarks of director Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment. The film would eventually be produced by Carolco Pictures, the same company that distributed the "Rambo" films and produced Oliver Stone's "The Doors" (1991). Schwarzenegger returns to play one of his most recognizable roles: a human-like cyborg, sent back in time to protect the son (Edward Furlong) of the woman, Sarah (Linda Hamilton), that he was supposed to have killed. A more advanced cyborg, T-1000 (Robert Patrick), made out of liquid metal, is also sent back -- to kill the woman's son. An alternate ending was scripted for the film, involving an elderly Sarah reminiscing in a park, but the scene was ultimately cut. This script retains that alternate ending. The second film in the apocalyptic, science fiction action saga, with its predecessor "The Terminator" (1984) being arguably the highest-grossing "low-budget" feature ever made. "Terminator" made James Cameron the most sought-after action director in the world, and led to a nearly billion-dollar franchise whose story and characters have inspired countless films (including three sequels and a television series), comic books, action figures, video games, and even amusement park rides. Winner of four Academy Awards, and the first film to have a production budget of more than 100 million dollars. Director Cameron also won a Bradbury Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1992. Set in Los Angeles, shot on location throughout California and in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Black untitled wrappers. Title page noted as Revised script, dated February 19, 1991, with credits for screenwriters Cameron and Wisher. 127 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 124. Photographically reproduced, with white, blue, green, pink, goldenrod, and yellow revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/10/90 and 2/19/91. Near Fine overall, bound internally with two gold brads. Lentz, p. 1589. Newman, p. 116. Smith and Schneider 1001. Weldon (1996), p. 561.
