The World Crisis, the full leather Easton Press edition in six volumes

Norwalk, Connecticut: Easton Press, 1991. Full leather. This is an as-new, full six-volume set of the striking Easton Press leather bound edition. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. This edition is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and reader-friendly editions to date. Easton Press publications are sought for their high production values. Standard features include full leather binding with raised spine bands, extensive gilt lettering and decoration, all edges gilt, satin ribbon page markers, archival paper, sewn pages, and moire fabric endsheets. This set is bound in full crimson pigskin with black title and author spine labels. Richard Langworth, author of A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill, helped design this edition. Consequently, the contents of this Easton Press edition present an ideal combination of features from the many editions of this critically acclaimed work; the text is from the first English edition, while the photos are from the second American edition. The full color reprints of the original folding maps "are, if anything, better than the originals." (Langworth, p.112) Condition of this set is as new. The bindings are immaculate with no discernible wear or defects. The contents are pristine, crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks. Each volume feels unread. Please anticipate that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.19, Langworth p.111

        Valparaiso

Hazan, Paris 1991 - A very nice copy of this lovely book. Covers and contents are clean with just very very slight tanning to spine but it really is almost imperceptible and much better, in this respect, than is often the case with this book. The only other flaw is due to the nature of the covers, as they appear to be made from some sort of recycled material, and on the back cover there is a small lump that is in the paper itself. It's not something added nor is it post publication damage. I'll include an image of it but it won't really show you anything. Tough to describe and I only noticed it when listing. I wont meddle with it as it would only make it a bigger issue, wheras at present it is jut a minor publishing flaw and the only flaw that there is. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Walt Whitman ALS: "as I sit here late night Dec 31 … a storm out … tomorrow a new year", to Gabriel Sarrazin French poet and translator

Camden, NJ: , January 1891, 1991. Camden, NJ, January 1891. 3" x 5". "ALS postcard, 5"" x 3"", postmarked, ""Camden /Jan / 91"" with the third being illegible. Signed by Walt Whiteman as ""Walt Whitman"". Boldly scripted with strong contrast entirely in his own hand. Front slight discoloration from being in an album of some sort with dime size spot, with verso maintaining one small spot of smeared ink, else near fine.Whitman's letter appears reflective on his life with the advent of the New Year. The postcard was written on a late and stormy night, Dec 31, 1890. His health was in rapid decline at point and he references such in his not ""-Am here yet + much the same"". However Whitman, with his strong constitution and relently attitude of looking forward regardless of his health, was still determined to compose and publish ""When I publish anything new I will send you""His reflective letter to Gabriel Sarrazin is shown in full below:""Campden New Jersey US AmericaThot(thought) I wd(would) send a short word as I sit here late night Dec 31 '90 + a storm out - + tomorrow a new year beginning (+ I pray it will be one lucky + blessed to you) - Am here yet + much the same-When I publish anything new I will send you - If you receive this write + give me directions - God Bless you.Walt Whitman""Called America's first ""poet of democracy"", a name for Whitman which reflected his ability to write in a singularly American character. Among the most influential US poets, often called the ""father of free verse"", his work was very controversial, particularly ""Leaves of Grass"" (1855) which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. He worked as a government clerk and as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War. ""Leaves of Grass"", published with his own money, was an attempt to reach out to the common person with an American epic. He continued expanding and revising it until his death. There is a distinct contrast between Whitman's idealized notions of the human body as expressed in his literary work and the actual state of his health as it evolved over the course of his life. The many revisions of Leaves of Grass did not so much parallel his decline in health as much as reinforce his original conception of the natural human being as the divine reflection of the cosmos. Over time this idea as an essential theme of his work began to take precedence over others, serving as both his conception of America's unique characteristic as a people and the archetype of his own self-created myth for the model of healthy masculinity. As a consequence, the health-imbued persona of mythic proportions he projected in his work fused with new and various aspects of his self-created image as healer in each newly revised edition of the work. Harold Aspiz believes the first three editions of Leaves of Grass illustrate a merger of what he terms the ""fact and invention"" of Whitman's self-portrayal as the self-endowed symbol of his own magnificent body. His image as ""one of the roughs"" in the first edition transforms in the second into a magnetic ""folk-evangelist,"" in the third into a ""reincarnated Adam"" ready to bear healthy children, and in the fourth into the ""healer-camerado."" With each new edition, the body of the poet is used less and less as a metaphor for the physical vitality that was integral to his philosophy. By the time of this letter, Whitman was already partially paralyzed. Whitman spent his last years in Camden, New Jersey. As the end of 1891 approached, he prepared a final edition of ""Leaves of Grass"", the ""Deathbed Edition;"" hedied in 1892, about 2 years after he penned this postcard to Sarrazin. This incredible letter/postcard demonstrating Whitman's staunch perseverance to ignore the short comings of his long term health issues and clearly notes his phenomenal eternal positive energy he had for life. A fantastic piece."

Hazan, Paris. 1991 - The original edition and 1st. printing 1991. "Valparaiso", an important seaport in Chile, here photographed by the Chilean photographer-photojournalist (Magnum 1961-) Sergio Larrain, a city he saw as quite ugly but still had charm and a romantic sense. Book layout by Xavier Barral, text in French by Pablo Neruda, followed by 38 b&w photographs beautifully printed by the editor. This copy was bought at an exhibition of Larrain's work in Arle 1991 (France) and has since than never been opened. Nevertheless, some text pages in the beginning of the book and some following images show faint yellowing in the margins to border's extremities (probably the acid in the paper when contact with light/air !), covers clean, showing only a hint of tanning along spine and borders on both panels, else a clean and near flawless copy. With engraved general title-page, engraved author's portrait, 6 engraved plates and 3 engraved folding plates. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum.

Krivatsy 2363; cf. Hagelin, p. 148, A.G. Debus, The French paracelsians: the chemical challenge to medical and scientific tradition in early modern France (1991), pp. 130-131. Reissue of the first Latin edition of a pharmacopoeia compiled by the French apothecary Moyse Charas (1618-1698). The pharmacopoeia "begins with a hundred-page introduction to ancient (Galenic) and modern (chemical) pharmacy. The remainder of the volume was divided almost evenly between traditional and chemical preparations. ... In a long section on the elements he openly took the side of the chemists stating that the four elements were insufficient to explain observations. ... The chemical section included plates illustrating chemical equipment as well as chemical characters and symbols". (Debus)Charas "attained European celebrity in 1668, when the plague swept France, as the first French pharmacist to prepare the famous Theriac. ... " (Hagelin). In the third part the Latin translation of this text on theriac is given, along with Charas's work on vipers. Binding with a couple smudges and a small part of the front hinge cracked, but otherwise very good. Slightly browned and some occasional foxing throughout, a few bottom corners torn off, not affecting text. A very good copy.

… In a long section on the elements he openly took the side of the chemists stating that the four elements were insufficient to explain observations. … The chemical section included plates illustrating chemical equipment as well as chemical characters and symbols".
