Autographed letter signed: A Christmas Memory

1991 - When asked for an early childhood memory by a fan in 1991, Tony Hillerman wrote in blue ink on his "Tony Hillerman" letterhead: "Eric: An early memory-- at about age 8--coming home sleepy with Mama, Papa, brother & sister down the hill from Christmas midnight mass--sleepy, hungry, excited--eating fresh from-over bread & baked hot fresh ham, juicy & delicious--wood stove glowing hot, kitchen decorated with ironweed berries strung on threads, opening presents--finding Santa had brought me a cap gun and a book, a stocking cap & book for brother, a little doll & book for my sister. Bliss indeed. Then down the icy hallway to bed. Tony Hillerman" Also included is a glossy black and white photograph of Tony Hillerman, signed on both sides: "Tony Hillerman." The photo is by Miriam Berkley. Tony Hillerman (1925 – 2008) was an award-winning American author of detective novels and non-fiction works best known for his Navajo Tribal Police mystery novels. Several of his works have been adapted as big-screen and television movies. Some of his novels are: The Blessing Way, Dance Hall of the Dead, Listening Woman, People of Darkness, The Dark Wind, and A Thief of Time. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, serving from August 1943 to October 1945. He served as a mortar-man in the 103rd Infantry Division. He earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart. He attended the University of Oklahoma after the war, meeting Marie Unzner, a student in microbiology. The couple wed and have one biological child and five adopted children. From 1948–62, he worked as a journalist, then moved his family to Albuquerque where he earned a master's degree from the University of New Mexico in 1966. It was during his time as a writer for the Borger News-Herald in Borger, Texas that he became acquainted with the sheriff of Hutchinson County, the man upon whom he would pattern the main character in his Joe Leaphorn novels. He taught journalism from 1966 to 1987 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and also began writing novels. He lived there with his wife Marie until his death in 2008. At the time of his death, they had been married 60 years and had ten grandchildren. (Wikipedia) [Attributes: Signed Copy]

SWEYNHEYM AND PANNARTZ AND THE ORIGINS OF PRINTING IN ITALY: GERMAN TECHNOLOGY AND ITALIAN HUMANISM IN RENAISSANCE ROME

McMinnville: Printed by the Bird & Bull Press for Phillip J. Pirages, 1991. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 233 COPIES (of 241 total). The present leaf book offers an uncommon opportunity for research libraries as well as collectors interested in early printing or in private press work and the book arts to obtain an example of the work of Sweynheym and Pannartz in a form that is handsomely produced and at the same time not prohibitively expensive. Aside from Gutenberg and his immediate associates, there are no figures more important in the early history of printing than Sweynheym and Pannartz, the earliest printers outside Germany. First at Subiaco and later in Rome, they produced an imposing catalogue of first editions of ancient authors, which for the first time systematically exploited the potential of the new technology as a means for disseminating humanistic texts to a large audience. The present scholarly work is the first book to create from the available information a broadly based and detailed picture of the activities of these two printers. The book examines in a full and careful way their lives and achievements within the context of their newly developed craft as well as the humanistic environment they encountered in Rome in the 1460s and 1470s. In the process of his account, Professor Hall challenges a number of widely held assumptions about the origins of printing in Italy. The volume is printed on luxurious mould-made Frankfurt paper by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press, for more than 40 years one of America's most distinguished private presses. The 14 1/2 x 10 1/2" leaves are in excellent condition, and they show to good advantage the famous and beautiful type Sweynheym and Pannartz first used in 1467, recognized now as the earliest truly roman font.. 235 x 159 mm. (9 1/4 x 6 1/4"). FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 233 COPIES (of 241 total). A Campbell-Logan Co. binding of purple quarter morocco, using marbled papers especially designed for this edition by Iris Nevins. Text with four nine-line initials in red and blue (replicating 15th century rubrication), two pages of typographic facsimiles. ACCOMPANIED BY A LARGE FOLIO SWEYNHEYM & PANNARTZ LEAF from the 1471 printing of Nicholas of Lyra's "Postilla super totam Bibliam." The book and leaf (which is secured behind a hinged cloth mat) housed in an impressive (15 1/2 x 11 3/4") navy blue folding cloth box constructed of acid-free materials by Jace Graf of Cloverleaf Studio. Title page printed in black, red, and blue.         Diccionario Grande De La Lengua De Michoacan

Fimax Publicistas, Mexico City 1991 - 2 volumes: 704 pages with tables; 848 pages. Octavo (9" x 6 3/4") bound in original wrappers. Compiled by Warren J Benedict. First edition limited to 500 copies. In the fall of 1965, Warren found in the John Carter Brown Library, a very incomplete manuscript dictionary of the Tarascan language . In the catalog of the library it was indicated as a work of Father Gilberti, who first publish the grammar (1558) and dictionary (1559) of the language. But the manuscript dictionary was very different togthan that of the dictionary published by Gilberti. Warren considered copying the document but because of the poor physical condition of the manuscript, decided against doing so. In 1977, when Warren began to investigate further the life and writings of Brother Mathurin Gilberti, he found in a bibliographic directory quotation from a manuscript in the Latin American Library at Tulane, indicating that it was a "Vocabulary Castilian-Tarasco-Tarasco and Castilian" written by Brother Gilberti. When asked about the content of the manuscript, he was assured that the manuscript was published the Gilberti vocabulary. He found that not only was it different in many ways from the published vocabulary of Gilbert,i but was a full version of which the dictionary the manuscript of the John Carter Brown contained only the last part. Since the manuscript in the Tulane library completely, legible and without major flaws, it was possible to begin serious editorial work. So Warren called the manuscript of Tulane Text A. It consists of two parts: the Spanish-Tarasco part which has 130 leaves and the Tarasco-Spanish Part of 150 leaves. There was a note by the famous Mexican bibliophile Nicolás León indicating the provenance of the manuscript. This manuscript was an unpublished document in the hand of Father Gilberti. This vocabulary was produced after the one printed in Mexico in 1559 and therefore more copious and corrected. It was found among the books belonging to Mendoza in Guadalajara, 1913, and bought in the Archdiocese. With the stamp on the title page is the"Sociedad [Mexicana] de Geografía y Estadística"; but it is believed that it was part of the Mendoza's collection, because no files appear in the receipt proving that it had been donated in 1913, noted by Leon. Having satisfied his conscience, Leon sold the manuscript to William Gates, who in turn sold several photographic prints, which are cited in the Newberry Library, the Peabody Library, and the Library of Congress. In 1924 Tulane bought the collection. The binding of the manuscript has a stamp of "Gates Collection" on the back of the cover. The original manuscript is written throughout in the same hand, but has corrections and additions between the lines. Many of them are the original scribe, but there are also many additions in another hand, especially at the beginning of the Spanish-Tarasco part, which may conflict sharply with the original. The manuscript of the John Carter Brown Library, here called the Type B, consisting of 148 leaves. This work is the compilation of all this material. Lightly soiled with gently bumped corners and light edge wear, else a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        My Favorite Summer 1956.

New York: Doubleday, 1991. Signed limited first edition. Octavo, original leather. Signed by Mickey Mantle in gold ink on the front panel. Laid in is the information regarding that Mickey Mantle signed a limited number for the publisher, Doubleday. In near fine condition. Uncommon. Mickey Mantle, like Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio before him, was arguably the most beloved player of his time in New York, and in this look back at his greatest year, written with New York Daily News sportswriter Pepe, one understands why he was so popular. In 1956 the Yankee centerfielder won the Triple Crown, batting .353 to beat Ted Williams, knocking in 130 runs to beat Al Kaline and hitting 52 home runs to beat everybody. He won the Most Valuable Player award and figured importantly in the World Series, chiefly because of a catch he made to preserve Don Larsen's perfect game. Mantle writes as well of his notorious escapades with Whitey Ford and Billy Martin and of his special relationship with manager Casey Stengel, but what readers will carry away is the picture of a fierce competitor who also seems to be a warm and generous-hearted human being.

        Automobiles Voisin 1919-1958.

London White Mouse Editions 1991 - First and limited numbered edition of only 2000 printed, (although 3500 were planned), this copy numbered 1671, landscape 4to., 312pp., numerous vintage photographic illustrations with French text, (together with a separate saddle-stitched English translation by Peter Hull also published in 1991, 64pp., publisher's blue leatherette, the upper cover mounted with a stunning silver metal intaglio plaque, rubbing to head of spine, else fine, both books housed in original decorative slip-case, which is a little worn and chipped from protecting the superb content. The History of Avions Voisin - cars for the French President, Josephine Baker, Rudolph Valentino and H. G. Wells, dates from 1919 when Gabriel Voisin established his luxury car business, producing some of the most original and potent vehicles of the 1920s, cars designed for function and efficiency that eschewed all the conventional tricks of the stylist. The special merits of the Voisin design were amply demonstrated in the Touring Grand Prix of July 1922, in which Voisin cars came home first, second and third place. The Voisins of the 1930s, including the legendary straight-twelve, the engine of which encroached on the driving compartment in the interests of perfect weight distribution, were cloaked in coachwork whose bizarre appearance has perhaps been softened by the passage of time but were the subject of much controversy in their day, even in France (which was the home of eccentric bodywork at that period).

The Seven Deadly Sins with: Related Ephemera

New York, NY: Lococo Mulder, 1991. Limited First Edition. Hardcover; Folded Sheet. Fine/ Very Fine. A catalog of artworks & accompanying text on the title subject by William S. Burroughs, the immortal Beat-&-Beyond innovator/subverter- who certainly knew a thing or two about these topics. As noted in Eric C. Shoaf's WSB Collector's guide, this was published as "...the trade edition in cloth covered boards without dust jacket as issued, one of 2,000 copies. There was also a signed and numbered limited edition of 150 copies bound in full leather. Cover features an original piece of wood "shotgun art" by Burroughs. Frontispiece photo of Burroughs aiming a shotgun by Robert Mapplethorpe. Features reproductions of Burroughs' paintings illustrating the "seven deadly sins," with text by him...Though all copies of the book have the printed page with "Luxe Edition of 150 copies" this often creates confusion among collectors. But only the limited copies were bound in leather, and were signed and numbered by hand. In addition, there was a boxed portfolio of the same title, each with the seven prints and seven sheets of text, and each print numbered, signed, and dated. The edition includes 90 boxed sets, 10 artist proofs, 4 hors commerce, 3 printer's proofs, and 1 right to print. All published by Lococo-Mulder in NYC Sept. 1991." (Section I, No. 76, pg. 59; see also Schottlaender, B18A, pg. 26). The copy we offer here is from the cloth edition of 2,000 as described above. Though not officially signed & numbered, WSB has hand-inscribed & signed on the title page: "For Jim McCrary/ with all best wishes/ and friendship/ (signed) William S. Burroughs/ April 27, 1992." Jim McCrary, a poet & educator, has long resided in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was a friend & associate of WSB during his later years; a member of Burroughs Communications led by James Grauerholz. Included is a folded sheet-card issued by the publisher-gallery with printing on outer panels & blank interior, depicting one of the artworks on front panel, described on rear panel as "GLUTTONY 1991; Edition: 90/ 5-color woodblock/ screenprint; 45" x 31" " With its warm inscription dated shortly after publication & significant association, here is a uniquely desirable, collectible version of this most acclaimed WSB artistic & literary production. Catalog in fine-to-very fine condition: Very mild fading, wear & some fine dust-particles to front, esp. back covers & spine; tiny areas of wear with cloth-loss at front cover right corner, lower front & back cover corners. Interior very fine, virtually mint. Sheet-card also in fine-to-very fine condition with only mild rubbing to blank, off-white areas & margins of front, rear panels; tiny bumps & short, faint creasing at all corners; one short, faint crease visible on verso of front panel, not effecting reproduction of artwork on recto. Blank interior otherwise very fine. Inscribed & signed by William S. Burroughs to Jim McCrary.

The Legendary poet and photographer "Allen Ginsberg" - photographed in London, 1971.

1991. London, c. 1991. Vintage print of the original Photograph on archival paper. Image: 24 cm x 33,5 cm / Framed: 43,5 x 53,5 cm. Original photograph, from the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. With John's copyright-stamp verso. Signed and titled by John Minihan. Beautifully framed. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives.nnThe work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell.nIn between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first.nOver the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer".nnMinihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality;nn 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.'nnMinihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing,nn 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'.nnAmong his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996.nHe is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. nMinihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.
