Stamperia Valdonega, Verona. 1991. Two volumes. Folio (38,5 x 26,5 cm). 95 leaves (facsimile); 73 pages (Commentary). Facsimile bound in red leather with gold-tooled borders, gold tooled spine, and black leather spine label with title and author in gold, all edges gilt, ribbon bookmark, and headbands to match the original presented to Napoleon and Marie Louise on the birth of the King of Rome. Accompanying commentary volume is bound in red leather-textured paper covered boards with gold decoration and lettering to match. Slipcase for both volumes is covered in the same textured paper, and decorated with elaborate gold borders and the arms of the parents on the front and back. Forty verses are printed in forty different roman typefaces, surrounded by different borders. Forty copper-engraved emblematic miniatures by the Parmesan artist Antonio Pasini face the verses. The original copy presented to the imperial couple was photographed for this edition, and all details of its production were reproduced. Just as his father had done, Martino enlarged the pages of the original, retouched them letter by letter, and then reduced them back to original size. From these, relief engravings were made. Issued in celebration o the 250th anniversary of the birth of Giambattista Bodoni. Mosley's essay is entitled "Typography in England and France in the Age of Giambattista Bodoni." Martino Mardersteig's technical note is followed by a Bodoni Chronology.. "This edition, designed and realized by Stamperia Valdonega in Verona, consist of two volumes: The facsimile, for which Bodoni's texts were printed in flat bed letterpress with the frames and miniatures printed in nine color offset, on specially-made papers by Cartiere Magnani, Pescia, and the commentary, printed in letterpress and offset on Fedrigoni Bodoni Paper. The binding was carried out at Legatoria Recalcati in Milan." From the colophon

[Archive of Correspondence, Typescripts, and Manuscripts]

Various (Northampton, MA; Paros, Greece; and elsewhere), (1991-2008). Four (4) typed letters signed (TLS), twelve (12) autograph letters signed (ALS), and eight (8) signed autograph postcards, from poet Jack Gilbert, all addressed to friend Mike Edwards. Some 7000+ words in total. WITH: Eleven (11) original typescript draft poems (both laser-printed and typewriter) and one (1) holograph poem. ALSO INCLUDES: 34 draft poems photomechanically reproduced from Gilbert's holograph and typescript (for use in workshop setting, see details below), as well as complete photomechanically-reproduced copies (from Gilbert's original typescripts) of his final two books: REFUSING HEAVEN and THE DANCE MOST OF ALL, the latter INSCRIBED to Edwards by Gilbert in his late hand. Generally near fine or better overall. An intimate nearly two-decade-long archive of correspondence and related materials from poet Jack Gilbert to his friend Mike Edwards. The archive is composed of four parts: photomechanically reproduced poems from Gilbert's original holograph and typescript (created for use in the writing group); original holograph and typescript drafts of Gilbert?'s poems (given to Edwards directly and conveyed via mail); original correspondence (both typed and autograph letters as well as postcards); and copies (from his original typescript) of Gilbert's final two books: REFUSING HEAVEN and THE DANCE MOST OF ALL. The archive begins with the poems reproduced for workshop use. There are some 34 in total, of which at least 12 are by our reckoning unpublished, with at least another ten representing drafts differing substantially from their final versions. Only seven examples are largely or entirely as published. Though undated these workshop poems date ca. 1991-96 and provide a valuable window into Gilbert?'s compositional methods, as well as offering significant unpublished materials for study. 11 original typescript poems are also present, as is one entirely in Gilbert?'s holograph. Again, at least two are unpublished, with most of the others representing drafts, usually with substantive changes when compared again the final published versions. Most of these originals are later, ca. 1998-2000. In all, 45 draft poems, at least 15 apparently unpublished, with fewer than a dozen as (or largely as) published and most demonstrating substations revisions. Though Gilbert was often known for prickliness and distance, these letters bely that reputation. They find him entirely warm, open, and generous. Gilbert offers comments on Edwards?' poems and on several occasions encloses poems of his own (see above). He variously discusses his own ideas about poetry, his travel plans, his youth, health, publishing, relationships, the deaths of friends and family, and numerous other topics. The letters reveal a tender relationship, one clearly born of trust and mutual admiration, and a voice that is the same as that of the poems: utterly sincere and unembarrassed. The correspondence ends in 2002, but the friendship continued, as the presence of copies of Gilbert's final two book attests. These typescripts, like the individual draft poems previously discussed, show substantial variation from their final published forms. The typescript for REFUSING HEAVEN demonstrates perhaps the most significant revisions between the draft included and the ultimate version. First and most obviously, the order of the poems in the book is radically different. More than that, however, many of the poems themselves differ from their final forms: several title changes and numerous edits (both large and small) are evident throughout. In addition, several poems originally slotted for REFUSING HEAVEN were removed between this version and the final, only to be included later in THE DANCE MOST OF ALL. And most importantly, one poem exists in two drafts, both of which differ from the final, and another two poems were cut from the published edition that apparently remain unpublished. THE DANCE MOST OF ALL typescript differs most significantly in the order of the poems, while the poems themselves show fewer changes than the previous typescript for REFUSING HEAVEN. Nonetheless, numerous smaller edits are evident throughout, and the presence of Gilbert?'s inscription at a time when he was signing very few books lends this final piece of the archive an undeniable poignancy. In his shunning of public attention, infrequent appearances and interviews, slender and careful output, regular self-imposed exile, and unique mix of both popular acclaim and peer respect, Gilbert?'s career resembled less those of his contemporaries and more the careers of beloved poetic figures like T.S. Eliot and Elizabeth Bishop. Indeed, at the time of his death, Gilbert was one of the most widely-read and influential of American poets, a combination that gave him an almost singular stature. A detailed, descriptive inventory of the archive is available on request, as are additional images. More than 200 printed pages in total, this collection represents a long-lived correspondence with a major American poet during what was arguably his most fertile period, one rich in personal and biographical detail. It offers a rare window into both Gilbert?'s working methods and creative process, as well as containing a significant trove of unpublished material. An archive worthy of prominent institutional placement, with a scope and depth that has clear potential for original scholarship.

        Photographs 1970-1990

HarperCollins, New York 1991 - SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of only 326 copies signed by Leibovitz. A collection of Annie Leibovitz's most classic photographs. The photographs made up her first museum show, which "took place in 1991 at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and toured internationally for six years. At the time she was only the second living portraitist - and the only woman - to be featured in an exhibition by the institution." ("Life Through a Lens", PBS). Included in the book are such legendary photographs as those from the Rolling Stones' 1975 world tour; the last ever taken of John Lennon, nude and wrapped around a fully-clothed Yoko Ono; Nixon's resignation; and Leibovitz's series of ballet dancers, with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mark Morris, and Darci Kistler. In addition to commemorating Leibovitz's talent as a photographer, Photographs is emblematic of the three decades it spans, depicting celebrities and major events with unparalleled artistry and intimacy. New York: HarperCollins Publishers, 1991. Folio, original cloth, original pictorial slipcase. Very minor wear to slipcase; tiny spot of soiling on spine; generally a fine copy. Rare.         VHOR-TEXT

1991. ELY, Timothy C. VHOR-TEXT. One-of-a-kind manuscript book. Comprised of 15 double-spread and two single-page sheets of thick hand-made paper, each original drawing executed in pen and ink, graphite, watercolour, and dry pigments by Timothy Ely. 8vo., 207 x 140 mm, bound in brown metallic on boards, relief lettering with gold, red and blue decorative highlights. Preserved in grey cloth protective box. Colfax, Washington: Timothy Ely, 1991. |~||~||~||~||~| Unique painted manuscript. Signed and dated by the artist on the title page. Timothy Ely's VHOR-TEXT is a visual laboratory, a metaphysical realm, consisting of symbolic architecture, geometry, perspective, celestial spheres, astronomy, astrology, phantasmagoric spaces, ideograms, horizons, and mystic mathematical writing. The mystical text, labeled "cribiform" by the artist, is a hybrid of scripts by ancient scribes, engravers and calligraphers, Chinese characters, ciphers, Egyptian hieroglyphics, cryptographs, codes and various secret writings. The cribiform is meant to function "as an intermediary to other types of meaning." Certainly, the connection to Carl Jung's theories on single marks and symbols as messages from the collective unconscious comes immediately to mind. This painted manuscript echoes the style and sensibility of the historical illustrated works of Pacioli, Ptolemy, Mercator, Copernicus, Celarius, Tyco Brahe, Leonardo and Galileo, as well as evoking the modern sensibility of Max Ernst and Iliazd, as seen in their masterpiece Maximiliana of 1964. Timothy Ely began making books in the 1950s with one surviving example from that time: a small cookbook covered in stars. Ely has taught bookbinding, drawing and creativity workshops in many places in the world from Scandinavia to Central America. His books and other works can be found in museums and libraries, most extensively in the United States and Europe. In as new condition. Timothy C.

The archive is composed of four parts: photomechanically reproduced poems from Gilbert's original holograph and typescript (created for use in the writing group); original holograph and typescript drafts of GilbertÂ’s poems (given to Edwards directly and conveyed via mail); original correspondence (both typed and autograph letters as well as postcards); and copies (from his original typescript) of Gilbert's final two books: REFUSING HEAVEN and THE DANCE MOST OF ALL. 1991-96 and provide a valuable window into GilbertÂ’s compositional methods, as well as offering significant unpublished materials for study. 11 original typescript poems are also present, as is one entirely in GilbertÂ’s holograph. Gilbert offers comments on EdwardsÂ’ poems and on several occasions encloses poems of his own (see above). Nonetheless, numerous smaller edits are evident throughout, and the presence of GilbertÂ’s inscription at a time when he was signing very few books lends this final piece of the archive an undeniable poignancy. In his shunning of public attention, infrequent appearances and interviews, slender and careful output, regular self-imposed exile, and unique mix of both popular acclaim and peer respect, GilbertÂ’s career resembled less those of his contemporaries and more the careers of beloved poetic figures like T.S. It offers a rare window into both GilbertÂ’s working methods and creative process, as well as containing a significant trove of unpublished material. An archive worthy of prominent institutional placement, with a scope and depth that has clear potential for original scholarship.

CYCLE OF THE DAY, A BOOK OF HOURS |THE

N.P.: The Press at Colorado College, 1991. 8 loose singature and a colophon section folded in three and loosely inserted in a clamshell box. Press at Colorado College. oblong 4to. 8 loose singature and a colophon section folded in three and loosely inserted in a clamshell box. Unpaginated. Limited to 50 numbered copies.Illustrations, designs and diagrams. Color plates printed letterpress, a few hand-done inclusions and hot-stamped foil. Bird drawings are from photographs, altered by James Trissel. This contemporary Book of Hours was influenced by the Rule of St. Benedict and other Books of Hours printed from 1460-1800. The materials chosen for this Book are those of the designer and printer tempered with advice from friends. Each Book of Hours is an invention; no two are alike. The opening diagrams and schemes are obvious references to the daily cycle. The emphasis upon the Psalms is traditional and meant to be ecumenical, "The color printing of the central panel of each section is entirely consistent with elements found in manuscript paintings of the hours." - Colophon. This great production by the late James Trissel is a tour de force, with both printing and illustrations of fine quality. Slight bump to top right-hand corner of box, else fine.
