Ludwigsburg Edition Libri Illustri, 1991. 596 Seiten. Pergament in Schuber. Limitierte Auflage: 800 Exemplare. Editionsnummer: 239. Original Cartoon Illustration: "The Balance of Power - The Invincible U.S. Air Force - Communism's Overwhelming Ground Forces"

N.d. (ca 1950s). An absolutely stunning drawing by Burris Jenkins, long-time staff cartoonist for the New York Journal-American. Jenkins was best known for his sports cartoons, which documented the major sporting events of the day, but he was also a prolific editorial cartoonist. The current example combines elements of both genres, with a foreground dominated a swooping, indomitable, and very athletic-looking American airman hovering over a defiant (but overmatched) Soviet army, in his hands a pair of enormous bombs -- a terrific piece of American Cold-War propaganda. The inscribee, E. Maurice Bloch, was an art historian, long-time professor at UCLA, and founder of the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts in Los Angeles. His distinguished collection of graphics was auctioned by Christie's in 1991; this drawing was part of Lot 241 in Part 2 of the Bloch sale. Original drawing in graphite and ink, with white ink highlights. Sheet size 33cm x 58cm (ca 13" x 23") with ca. 1" margins. Titled in pencil, top margin. Signed in image, lower right; additionally inscribed in lower margin: "With best wishes to Professor E. Maurice Bloch / Burriss Jenkins," undated but ca 1950. Smudging in margins; compositor's directions written below image; Near Fine. Archivally mounted to a hinged gallery mat with mylar window.

Writer Tom Wolfe - Photographed at the BBC - London, 1991.

London, 1991 - Original, Vintage Photograph on archival paper. London, 1991. Fantastic vintage photograph of Wolfe, from the library of irish photographer John Minihan. With John's copyright-stamp verso. Signed and titled by John Minihan. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. Santa Barbara: Neville, 1991. First edition. Hardcover. Fine (except for two small spots to rear cover and one to front cover...possibly some body fluid (or DNA) from HST???). This copy marked 'Presentation Copy' and signed, in full, by Hunter S. Thompson on the colophon page. Contains 3 pieces; Mescalito, Death of a Poet, and Screwjack. Bright red cloth with gilt decoration to front cover (HST's monster) issued without dust jacket. As for the chronological order of the three pieces, here is what the author states in his introduction: "As for the ORDER, I think Screwjack should be last & Mescalito first --so the dramatic tension (and the true chronological weirdness) can build like Bolero to a faster and wilder climax that will drag the reader relentlessly up a hill, & then drop him off a cliff.....That is the Desired Effect, and if we start with Screwjack it won't happen.       US: Delacorte Press, 1991 Near Fine book that has touch of rubbing to quarter cloth, very light soiling to edges of page block, with page block bowed a bit away from spine at top; in a Very Good to Near Fine dust jacket that has slight edge and corner wear and rubbing to both panels. Bubbling and separation of the protective mylar from the printed jacket has been a common problem with this title ?" this copy has only very slight bubbling between a few letters of author?s name at bottom of front panel. Book has been signed by Gabaldon and dated 1/8/94 on the title page and inscribed, also on the title page: For Velma ?" Happy New Year & many of them!
