        Outlander

US: Delacorte Press, 1991 Near Fine book that has touch of rubbing to quarter cloth, very light soiling to edges of page block, with page block bowed a bit away from spine at top; in a Very Good to Near Fine dust jacket that has slight edge and corner wear and rubbing to both panels. Bubbling and separation of the protective mylar from the printed jacket has been a common problem with this title ?" this copy has only very slight bubbling between a few letters of author?s name at bottom of front panel. Book has been signed by Gabaldon and dated 1/8/94 on the title page and inscribed, also on the title page: For Velma ?" Happy New Year & many of them!

Cimelio Tipografico Pittorico Offerto Agli Augustissimi Genitori del Re Di Roma + The «Cimelio» of Bodoni. The work and its printer in essays.

Stamperia Valdonega, Verona. 1991. Two volumes. Folio (38,5 x 26,5 cm). 95 leaves (facsimile); 73 pages (Commentary). Facsimile bound in red leather with gold-tooled borders, gold tooled spine, and black leather spine label with title and author in gold, all edges gilt, ribbon bookmark, and headbands to match the original presented to Napoleon and Marie Louise on the birth of the King of Rome. Accompanying commentary volume is bound in red leather-textured paper covered boards with gold decoration and lettering to match. Slipcase for both volumes is covered in the same textured paper, and decorated with elaborate gold borders and the arms of the parents on the front and back. Forty verses are printed in forty different roman typefaces, surrounded by different borders. Forty copper-engraved emblematic miniatures by the Parmesan artist Antonio Pasini face the verses. The original copy presented to the imperial couple was photographed for this edition, and all details of its production were reproduced. Just as his father had done, Martino enlarged the pages of the original, retouched them letter by letter, and then reduced them back to original size. From these, relief engravings were made. Issued in celebration o the 250th anniversary of the birth of Giambattista Bodoni. Mosley's essay is entitled "Typography in England and France in the Age of Giambattista Bodoni." Martino Mardersteig's technical note is followed by a Bodoni Chronology.. "This edition, designed and realized by Stamperia Valdonega in Verona, consist of two volumes: The facsimile, for which Bodoni's texts were printed in flat bed letterpress with the frames and miniatures printed in nine color offset, on specially-made papers by Cartiere Magnani, Pescia, and the commentary, printed in letterpress and offset on Fedrigoni Bodoni Paper. The binding was carried out at Legatoria Recalcati in Milan." From the colophon

1991. CALLE, Sophie. La Fille du Docteur. [18] pp. Illustrated with 18 black-and-white photographic reproductions, 16 of them full-page on thin transparent vellum paper. 4to., 280 x 200 mm, bound in publisher's faux leopard skin over boards, purple endpapers. In cloth protective box. New York: Thea Westreich, 1991. |~||~||~||~||~| The most visually spectacular of her artist's books to date, La Fille du Docteur represents another exploration of the part autobiographical/part fictional personae of Sophie Calle. The work consists of sixteen facsimile cards of congratulation (purportedly) from colleagues of the artist's father upon the announcement of her birth. This was traditional amongst the French medical profession, and Calle's father was a physician, or was he? Each of these cards is housed in a glassine envelope, facing one of the full-page sequential images of the artist performing a drunken striptease. These images conclude with the naked, comatose Sophie (who "will be a source of joy to her parents") sprawled in a heap. One of an edition of 230 copies, this example is SIGNED by Sophie Calle on the colophon. With a new protective box replacing the original cardboard slipcase. A fine copy.

From the publisher (in 1991): "Over the last fifteen years, Friedlander has been working with a number of models to create his own way of seeing and photographing the female nude. Little of this work has ever appeared. The photographs are both highly intimate and coolly detached. The frequently surprising perspectives are balanced by the mundane backdrops of ordinary life, the real domestic interiors of the models. He appears to have taken a primary theme of Western art and re-invented it." Signed by the Artist. As New (from Friedlander's personal archive). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        BODMER'S AMERICA

London: Alecto Historical Editions, 1991. No. 23 OF 125 COPIES n. Hardcover. Bodmer's Celebrated "America," a Spectacular Facsimile withIllustrations Made from the Original Plates, One of 125 Copies. 765 x 620 mm (30 1/8 x 24 1/2"). No. 23 OF 125 COPIES. Loose as issued in five buckram folders inside a cloth solander box, paper labels. WITH 81 HAND-FINISHED COLOR PLATES, heightened with gum arabic. One corner of the (heavy) box very expertly repaired, two-inch closed internal tear to title sheet seamlessly mended, other very minor signs of use to the box, but the portfolios and their plates as new, even the tissues guards in pristine condition. Printed using the original engraved plates for "Travels in the Interior of North America in the Years 1832-34," this is a splendidly produced facsimile of a monumental work on the American West that offers a very attractive alternative to the prohibitively expensive original. Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93) was working as a landscape illustrator when he was hired by the Prussian naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied for an expedition to examine and describe the wildlife and Indian tribes of the American West. The men travelled up the Missouri River from Saint Louis to Montana over a 13-month period, and Bodmer documented the landscape and people of the region in great detail. In the words of the website of the National Agricultural Library, "although Maximilian and Bodmer were not the first to explore the American West and record their observations, they were the first team combining a trained, dedicated scientist with an especially skilled illustrator, whose collaboration resulted in a work of unique historical, scientific, and aesthetic importance." According to ANB, "for over a century Bodmer's aquatints have been regarded as one of the most significant contributions to the iconography of the western frontier." In his portraits of American Indians, Bodmer "achieved a level of accuracy and sensitivity that no other artist of the American frontier has ever surpassed. His work is particularly valuable for its detailed rendition of the Indians' ornamentation, attire, and implements. Indeed, Bodmer was far superior to his better-known contemporary George Catlin, whose work lacks the Swiss artist's fidelity and meticulous attention to detail." In addition to depictions of native Americans, the "Travels" (the work was also produced in German and French) contains a number of memorable images of flora and fauna, terrain, frontiersmen, steamboats, and more. After the printing of the original editions, the location of the plates remained unknown until their rediscovery at Castle Wied in the 1950s; they eventually ended up being donated to the Omaha Joslyn Art Museum, which then collaborated with Alecto Historical Editions in London on the present spectacular reproduction. In an effort to achieve thoroughgoing authenticity, the work on our illustrations was done using the 19th century poupée printing technique, a laborious and exacting method involving the application by hand of multiple colors on the same plate. Copies of the original editions--which seldom appear in appealing condition--are now extravagantly expensive, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. And copies of the present facsimile simply do not appear (this is the only copy we could trace that was not sold directly to institutions at the time of production). The original price of the present facsimile in 1991 was $85,000.
