Bones of the Book: An Oblong Identity

Colfax, WA: , 1990-[2015]. Colfax, WA, 1990-[2015]. Unique. Timothy C. Ely. Planetary Collage Standard binding with hand-sewn hand-dyed Irish linen end- bands and half loose guards. Elaborately blind-tooled brown goat skin spine; resin and pigment encrusted boards. Decorated endpapers by the artist. Manuscript and letterpress title page signed and dated by the artist. Twenty- four double-page spreads. 34 leaves total. Drawn and painted throughout by Timothy Ely in ink, dry pigment, watercolor, and graphite. The boards incorporate six works of art on paper; resin, rivets, paint, ink, and wax; gilt, colored foil, and blind tooling. Housed in a custom drop back box by the artist.44.5cmx30cmx3.5cm Bones of the Book is the second in a three-book series that differs significantly from Ely’s other art. These books are both biographical and autobiographical. Each honors the important influence of family members in Ely’s life, and combines it with an aspect of bookbinding—the format Ely has chosen to house his artwork throughout his career. In each case, there is also a third narrative that plays a significant role in Ely’s identity as an individual and as an artist. The series began with Binding the Book:The Flight Into Egypt in 1985. Egypt is about Ely’s grandfather, the journal he left behind about his mysterious trip to Egypt between the wars, bookbinding, and the geography of Egypt. For much more information about Binding the Book: The Flight Into Egypt, see The Flight into Egypt: Binding the Book (Chronicle Books, 1995).In Bones of the Book, the visual narrative combines Ely’s origins (Snohomish, WA, his parents, and their hardware store), and the close relationship between book structure and human anatomy. The third book has yet to be made. Ely plans for it to be about his Uncle Jack and his work as a combat photographer in the Pacific during WWII. In addition to the three-fold, co-mingled story line in Bones, as in all of Ely’s art, there are layers of references drawn from alchemy, mathematics, mythology, geography, and geology.Artist’s statementIn the early part of the last decade of the 20th century, I wished to contemplate my origins, especially the early and all-consuming attraction to the form of the book and how that might have evolved for me. Beyond deep reading, I have found that the best way to become informed about an event or gather a bit of enlightenment is to make an expressive book. Bones of the Book began as a thought structure aimed at the skeletal system of the body and of the book, as they seem to me to contain functions that echo each other. I also wanted to fuse the influences of my parents and their choice of livelihood into the book by referencing the location of their hardware store and its impact on what I have chosen to do as an artist. My parents, Everett [b. 1914] and Frances [b. 1918], met at a paper mill where they both worked, then married at the outset of America’s involvement in World War II. In about 1948, they opened a hardware store in Snohomish, Washington (a map in the book drawn from memory is an attempt to locate the store in space), which set the tone for my entire life until they retired in 1978.The hardware store.... I long to travel back through time and view it again, for until I began this contemplation, I was not really aware of how much that family business, the community it served, and the tools and materials it contained affected me. I was introduced to the hardware business around the age of 11, not knowing how connected to the arts of the book this would be. It was to be my first real training in the process of building things, and, coupled with the local library where I practically lived when I wasn’t at the store, really became the focus of my interests. When I first began to work this out, I came to believe that there was an inextricable link between what influenced me, and how I came to know the craft of making a book. There seemed to be in place an existing gnosis which acted as both a guide and a set of techniques—a skeletal anatomy was at hand.I began drawing bones in graduate school after a trip to a forbidden beach at the mouth of the Hoh River yielded up a hoard of bird, fish, and crab remains. Though the Hoh Reservation was off limits, some cigarettes gave us entry. That same summer a second pile of bones from draft horses in central Washington gave me a new scale. Then, my Uncle Jack, living in Alaska, would provide the third leg of the bone ‘tripod' of visual clues by sending me boxes of bones from a lonely beach near Hoonah, Alaska. These bones would provide both visual inspiration and material for inks. (Bone black ink is especially bluish and potent!)Bones of the Book reflects both my identity as a maker of things, and bones as structural supports, and how that metaphor maps itself onto the cultural object/artifact of the book. As parts of the book traditionally have names of body parts to identify the book terrain, this seems apt. Books have a dorsal structure—a spine—and just as in a humanoid, if this is damaged the book is compromised. A book has a head and tail, and sometimes this head is crowned in gold, gilded, or otherwise given an ornamental treatment. As the names of a book’s parts and their function lend connection to bones and anatomy, so also does the chosen structure of this book. The search for both an appropriately robust and workable binding, and one that properly expresses my artistic intentions, provided a series of opportunities to examine a sampling of medieval books that satisfy these requirements. The structural skeleton of Bones of the Book is supported by a continuous membrane of aged gampi, a Japanese paper possessed of astonishing properties. This paper forms a long, double fold along each folio and is known as a “half loose” guard. Being somewhat impenetrable to adhesive, this paper reduces the friction of the folio so that it facilitates, without drag, the mobility of the book structure. Put simply, it opens well without adding stress to the binding. In tandem with the sewing supports, cotton textile, and tissue as metaphoric muscle mass, the book begins to resemble an intelligent and projective body. The Doctor said ‘‘It’s alive!’’Bones of the Book was finished as of June 11, 2015. It puts to rest and completes a long examined set of ideas, and its own initial structural challenges provoked a method of working that i can see to have a multiplicity of future uses.T.         Miller's Crossing Costume Reference Photographs Archive (Original Polaroid photographs and ephemera)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1990. An impressive, extensive archive of costume design materials used during the making of the 1990 film "Miller's Crossing," directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Created and compiled by costume designer Richard Horning and costume construction supervisor Jacque St. James, this archive offers a rare insight into the typically secretive production of a Coen brothers film. Notable highlights among the hundreds of photographs include Polaroids of Steve Buscemi, Gabriel Byrne, and Sam Raimi in costume, as well as a photograph of Albert Finney dressed in a maid's outfit, a costume in which he made a brief cameo in the film. The archive contains 109 loose Polaroid photos, 734 Polaroid photographs organized by scene in manila folders, twenty 35mm prints, two holograph sketches for costumes, three color photographs (including one of the directors and the crew), and a black and white photograph shot during production, twelve color slides of production stills, an office placard, a memento booklet, an invitation from the wrap party, and 389 pages of photocopies of 1920s era fashion advertisements and references. Shot in New Orleans, and set in an unnamed Eastern city during Prohibition. A story of gang rivalry where an outsider upsets an established order which, by the Coen brothers' own admission, pays homage to two of Dashiell Hammett's novels, "The Glass Key" and "Red Harvest." "Miller's Crossing" is, in terms its American orientation and dialect, the most direct translation of the latter work, and has taken a place in an important pantheon with a number of films that used the same source material, including Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961) and Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964).

Peter Fischli and David Weiss: Airports

Edition Patrick Frey and Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Zürich (Zurich) 1990 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Gray paper-covered boards with title printed in blue on cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Fischli and Weiss. Unpaginated (88 pp.), with 40 four-color plates. 12 x 16-3/4 inches. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. Near Fine (very faint small damp stain and the slightest of sunning to 1-1/2 inches from spine on front and rear cover, else As New). An extremely rare Near Mint copy, with minimal and barely noticeable small band of sunning. This title is rarely found without significant sunning to the covers. This is the very finest example we have ever seen. From Parr and Badger: "In Airports, [Fischli and Weiss] examine the means by which the 'Grand Tour' -- once the province of a privileged class -- has now become available to the common man. However it is not the social aspect of airports that attracts the artists' attention, but the means of transport itself -- those silver birds sitting on the runways, waiting to whisk the global traveller off to another culture. Although airports are the gateways to other countries, they themselves, and the sleek jets, conform to a global, rather than local, model of culture. It is this that Fischli and Weiss take note of, revelling in the sameness of, rather than the differences between, airports -- staging posts between cultures, yet, like other aspects of the contemporary culture of consumerism, in themselves largely anonymous and devoid of culture."         Autograph letter signed

1990 - KENNEDY, Jacqueline. Autograph letter signed. [New York], January 16, 1990. Single sheet of white unlined Doubleday stationery, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches. $1850.Desirable signed autograph letter written entirely in Jackie Kennedy's hand on her professional Doubleday stationery to art book publisher Georges Herscher suggesting how he might find photos of a Cole Porter party and offering phone numbers for Italian actress Valentina Cortese, who Kennedy's web of famous contacts thought might be helpful. The letter, dated "Jan 16 1990." and written on a sheet of Doubleday stationery, reads: "Dear M Herscher""Peter Duchin informs me that the way to find out if photos of the Cole Porter party exist is to call the actress Valentina Cortese, who knows someone very old who may have some. Her numbers are in Milan """"""- in Venice """"""- Her son, Jack Baseheart, will tell Mr Duchin if he finds anything""but I thought it might be quicker if you called too""Good luck. Sincerely Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis." The recipient, Georges Herscher, was an important art book publisher. Though he was the CFO of Hachette in the 1950s, he had more specialized aspirations. In 1971, he founded Editions du Chêne, publishing many groundbreaking works thereafter, generally in limited runs of 300-5000, including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas (including his first work). In 1980, he founded his own eponymous publishing concern, which he also ran. He produced fine art books until 1987. Peter Duchin, mentioned in the letter, was an American pianist, bandleader, and Vice-Chairman of the New York State Council on the Arts. Valentina Cortese, the suggested contact, is an Italian actress, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for her performance in François Truffaut's Day for Night. She had a son (mentioned in the letter) with Richard Basehart, her co-star in The House on Telegraph Hill. Jack[ie] Baseheart, the son, was also an actor before his untimely death of a rare paralyzing brain disease. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Eigenh. Brief mit U. [Zürich], 10. VIII. 1990.

1990. 1 S. Gr.-8vo.

Bones of the Book: An Oblong Identity

Colfax, WA, 1990-[2015]. Unique. Timothy C. Ely. Planetary Collage Standard binding with hand-sewn hand-dyed Irish linen end- bands and half loose guards. Elaborately blind-tooled brown goat skin spine; resin and pigment encrusted boards. Decorated endpapers by the artist. Manuscript and letterpress title page signed and dated by the artist. Twenty- four double-page spreads. 34 leaves total. Drawn and painted throughout by Timothy Ely in ink, dry pigment, watercolor, and graphite. The boards incorporate six works of art on paper; resin, rivets, paint, ink, and wax; gilt, colored foil, and blind tooling. Housed in a custom drop back box by the artist. 44.5cmx30cmx3.5cm Bones of the Book is the second in a three-book series that differs significantly from Ely?s other art. These books are both biographical and autobiographical. Each honors the important influence of family members in Ely?s life, and combines it with an aspect of bookbinding?the format Ely has chosen to house his artwork throughout his career. In each case, there is also a third narrative that plays a significant role in Ely?s identity as an individual and as an artist. The series began with Binding the Book:The Flight Into Egypt in 1985. Egypt is about Ely?s grandfather, the journal he left behind about his mysterious trip to Egypt between the wars, bookbinding, and the geography of Egypt. For much more information about Binding the Book: The Flight Into Egypt, see The Flight into Egypt: Binding the Book (Chronicle Books, 1995). In Bones of the Book, the visual narrative combines Ely?s origins (Snohomish, WA, his parents, and their hardware store), and the close relationship between book structure and human anatomy. The third book has yet to be made. Ely plans for it to be about his Uncle Jack and his work as a combat photographer in the Pacific during WWII. In addition to the three-fold, co-mingled story line in Bones, as in all of Ely?s art, there are layers of references drawn from alchemy, mathematics, mythology, geography, and geology. Artist?s statement In the early part of the last decade of the 20th century, I wished to contemplate my origins, especially the early and all-consuming attraction to the form of the book and how that might have evolved for me. 1918], met at a paper mill where they both worked, then married at the outset of America?s involvement in World War II. In about 1948, they opened a hardware store in Snohomish, Washington (a map in the book drawn from memory is an attempt to locate the store in space), which set the tone for my entire life until they retired in 1978. The hardware store.... I long to travel back through time and view it again, for until I began this contemplation, I was not really aware of how much that family business, the community it served, and the tools and materials it contained affected me. I was introduced to the hardware business around the age of 11, not knowing how connected to the arts of the book this would be. It was to be my first real training in the process of building things, and, coupled with the local library where I practically lived when I wasn?t at the store, really became the focus of my interests. When I first began to work this out, I came to believe that there was an inextricable link between what influenced me, and how I came to know the craft of making a book. There seemed to be in place an existing gnosis which acted as both a guide and a set of techniques?a skeletal anatomy was at hand. I began drawing bones in graduate school after a trip to a forbidden beach at the mouth of the Hoh River yielded up a hoard of bird, fish, and crab remains. Though the Hoh Reservation was off limits, some cigarettes gave us entry. That same summer a second pile of bones from draft horses in central Washington gave me a new scale. Then, my Uncle Jack, living in Alaska, would provide the third leg of the bone ?tripod' of visual clues by sending me boxes of bones from a lonely beach near Hoonah, Alaska. These bones would provide both visual inspiration and material for inks. (Bone black ink is especially bluish and potent!) Bones of the Book reflects both my identity as a maker of things, and bones as structural supports, and how that metaphor maps itself onto the cultural object/artifact of the book. As parts of the book traditionally have names of body parts to identify the book terrain, this seems apt. Books have a dorsal structure?a spine?and just as in a humanoid, if this is damaged the book is compromised. A book has a head and tail, and sometimes this head is crowned in gold, gilded, or otherwise given an ornamental treatment. As the names of a book?s parts and their function lend connection to bones and anatomy, so also does the chosen structure of this book. This paper forms a long, double fold along each folio and is known as a ?half loose? guard. The Doctor said ??It?s alive!?? Bones of the Book was finished as of June 11, 2015. It puts to rest and completes a long examined set of ideas, and its own initial structural challenges provoked a method of working that i can see to have a multiplicity of future uses. T. Ely/ July 2015/ Colfax, WA

Superb displayable White House letter of Pres. Bush to a 14-year-old high school student: "I did eat Broccoli. Although I didn't like it … I always ate what my Mother served at meals. I enjoyed hearing from you and hope that our paths will cross again someday. President Bush had three brothers (Prescott Jr., Jonathan, William), but only one sister, Nancy.Margaret Hupt had sent President Bush a ""Ban Broccoli"" button.Maureen Dowd reported in ""The New York Times"" on March 23, 1990, '''I do not like broccoli,' the President said, responding to queries about a broccoli ban he has imposed aboard Air Force One, first reported this week in U.S. News and World Report. 'And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli!'''"

Taking a more provocative and confrontational stance than many other activist groups, they used guerilla art tactics to promote a pro-queer-sex message in the wake of Jesse Helms' 1988 amendment banning federal funding for AIDs education programs. More than 4000 posters (several documented here) were pasted around San Francisco by BWAA and their work spread throughout the country. An early adopter of DIY and anti-copyright aesthetics, the encouraged appropriation of their texts, projects and iconography- including their eponymous logo. As the Queer Cultural Center noted when they included BWAA in their 2011 Queer it Yourself exhibition: "The group also welcomed and documented the informal contributions of passerby who improved, defaced or otherwise modified its street graphics." Included are:Sheet of 10 "Sex is /Just Sex" stickers; One 57.7 x 43 cm poster for a Canadian Micah Lexier exhibition poster on newsprint prominently reproducing the Boy With Arms Akimbo motif;Five double weight gelatin BW photographs, one 10" x 8" , the others 16" x 20" (with one duplicate, but processed at a different exposure with different parts of detail shown) all showing various interventions at (and on) the Phillip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco; A small (12pp) 16mo. Xerographically reproduced pamphlet Boy with Arms Akimbo: His Story (San Francisco: Healing Tales 1989). [Attributes: First Edition]
