        Autograph letter signed

1990. Signed. KENNEDY, Jacqueline. Autograph letter signed. [New York], January 16, 1990. Single sheet of white unlined Doubleday stationery, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches. $1850.Desirable signed autograph letter written entirely in Jackie Kennedy's hand on her professional Doubleday stationery to art book publisher Georges Herscher suggesting how he might find photos of a Cole Porter party and offering phone numbers for Italian actress Valentina Cortese, who Kennedy's web of famous contacts thought might be helpful. The letter, dated ""Jan 16 1990."" and written on a sheet of Doubleday stationery, reads: ""Dear M Herscher—Peter Duchin informs me that the way to find out if photos of the Cole Porter party exist is to call the actress Valentina Cortese, who knows someone very old who may have some. Her numbers are in Milan ———- in Venice ———- Her son, Jack Baseheart, will tell Mr Duchin if he finds anything—but I thought it might be quicker if you called too—Good luck. Sincerely Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis."" The recipient, Georges Herscher, was an important art book publisher. Though he was the CFO of Hachette in the 1950s, he had more specialized aspirations. In 1971, he founded Editions du Chêne, publishing many groundbreaking works thereafter, generally in limited runs of 300-5000, including books devoted to André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, Robert Doisneau, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Diane Arbus, and Rem Koolhaas (including his first work). In 1980, he founded his own eponymous publishing concern, which he also ran. He produced fine art books until 1987. Peter Duchin, mentioned in the letter, was an American pianist, bandleader, and Vice-Chairman of the New York State Council on the Arts. Valentina Cortese, the suggested contact, is an Italian actress, nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for her performance in François Truffaut's Day for Night. She had a son (mentioned in the letter) with Richard Basehart, her co-star in The House on Telegraph Hill. Jack[ie] Baseheart, the son, was also an actor before his untimely death of a rare paralyzing brain disease. Fine condition.

        Animal

1990. First Edition . Signed. KOUDELKA, Josef. Animal. Photographies de Josef Koudelka. (Amiens, France: Éditions Trois Cailloux, 1990). Quarto, original glossy black paper-covered portfolio, original metallic silver sleeve, 18 heliogravures (9-1/2 by 12 inches), loose as issued, 4-page booklet signed on the rear page. $1600.Signed limited first edition of the fourth volume in the acclaimed Trois Cailloux “porte-folio” series, number 536 of 700 copies signed by Koudelka on the booklet limitation page, with 18 exhibition-size heliogravures, an exceptional collection by the “most potent and powerful photographer alive today” (British Journal of Photography). This exquisite portfolio of 18 exhibition-size heliogravures by Josef Koudelka imagines a world where isolated animals roam, soar or linger in a landscape free of humanity—though not its imprint. Featuring iconic images such as KoudelkaÂ’s “photograph of a dead crow hanging from a horizontal barbed wire, the very image that Robert Delpire had chosen for the cover of Josef Koudelka (1984)” (Afterimage), this elegant edition of Animal confirms the profound vision of “the most potent and powerful photographer alive today” (British Journal of Photography). As in works such as Gypsies (1975) and Black Triangle (1994), KoudelkaÂ’s distinctively “rich, dark-toned and sumptuous photographsÂ… [are] melodramatic and tragic, serious in the best sense of the word” (Parr & Badger II:75, I:230). Signed limited first edition, number 537 of 700 copies (with an additional 26 reserved copies, lettered A to Z). Text by Ludvik Vaculik in French. See Open Book, 304. A fine signed copy.

[Edinburgh, 1990. Landscape-format monochrome photographic portrait, signed ("Peter Keen") on the lower right margin, dry mounted. 405 x 305 mm. Fine. Landscape-format monochrome photographic portrait, signed ("Peter Keen") on the lower right margin, dry mounted. 405 x 305 mm. Candid portrait photograph of Alexander Trocchi in profile, taken at the 1962 International Writers' Conference held at McEwan Hall, Edinburgh. The conference - which was on the subject of "The Novel Today" - was organized by the publisher John Calder and featured seventy writers from twenty countries. The conference gained some notoriety from the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid, the latter calling the former "cosmopolitan scum." Henry Miller and William Burroughs sided with Trocchi, who replied, "I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy."The photographer, Peter Keen (1928-2009), was commissioned to record the event for THE SUNDAY TIMES. His other notable work includes portraiture - some in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - and the photographic illustrations to Ted Hughes's RIVER (London, 1983).
