Millie's Book: As Dictated to Barbara Bush

William Morrow and Company, New York, NY 1990 - Inscribed "With best wishes/ Barbara Bush / and / (paw print) / November 1999" on title page in blue ink. Barbara Bush was born in 1925 to Pauline and Marvin Pierce, who later became president of McCall Corporation. In the suburban town of Rye, New York, she had a happy childhood. She went to boarding school at Ashley Hall in South Carolina, and it was at a dance during Christmas vacation when she was only 16 that she met George Bush, a senior at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. They became engaged a year and a half later, just before he went off to war as a Navy torpedo bomber pilot. By the time George returned on leave, Barbara had dropped out of Smith College. Two weeks later, on January 6, 1945, they were married. After the war, George graduated from Yale, and they set out for Texas to start their lives together. Six children were born to them: George, Robin, Jeb, Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy. Meanwhile, George built a business in the oil industry. With Texas as home base, he then turned to politics and public service, serving as a member of Congress, U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief of the U. S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and later as Vice President. In those 44 years of marriage, Mrs. Bush managed 29 moves of the family. When her husband was away, she became the family linchpin, providing everything from discipline to carpools. The death of their daughter Robin from leukemia when she was not quite four left George and Barbara Bush with a lifelong compassion. She says, "Because of Robin, George and I love every living human more." Barbara Bush was always an asset to her husband during his campaigns for public office. Her friendly, forthright manner won her high marks from the voters and the press. As wife of the Vice President, she selected the promotion of literacy as her special cause. As First Lady, she called working for a more literate America the "most important issue we have." Involved with many organizations devoted to this cause, she became Honorary Chairman of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. A strong advocate of volunteerism, Mrs. Bush helped many causes--including the homeless, AIDS, the elderly, and school volunteer programs. Today Barbara Bush lives in a home she and her husband built in Houston, Texas, where she enjoys being part of the community. Their children and grandchildren visit them often in Houston and at the family summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Devoted to her family, Mrs. Bush still finds time to work on an autobiography, serve on the Boards of AmeriCares and the Mayo Clinic, and continue her prominent role in the Barbara Bush Foundation. The biographies of the First Ladies are from ¿The First Ladies of the United States of America,¿ by Allida Black. Copyright 2009 by the White House Historical Association.         Original Tantra Painting

1990 - TANTRA PAINTINGS selected by Franck André Jamme While they invoke the highly symbolic cosmology of Hindu Tantra, these contemporary, anonymous paintings from Rajasthan are unlike the more familiar strands of Tantric Art. The progeny of hand-written, illustrated religious treatises from the 17th century, copied over many generations, these paintings have evolved into a distinct visual lexicon used to awaken heightened states of consciousness. Made in tempera, gouache, and watercolor on salvaged paper, they are pinned to the wall for use in private meditation. Possessing uncanny affinities with a range of 20th century abstract art, the paintings also have a vibratory beauty that inspires acute attention even in the uninitiated. True to the tantric spirit, it seems that the precise meaning and symbolism of the designs is not fixed. However, some general guidelines were codified long ago and transcend this specific tradition, and so are readily recognizable: for example, ovoids represent linga (hence Shiva), spirals give a form to energy, any set of three can depict the three gunas, and the colour blue symbolizes the pure sky of consciousness which contains all phenomena and experience.         Padraic Fiacc (Irish Poet).

1990. Ireland, c. 1990. Original / Vintage Photograph on archival paper. Image: 26 cm x 20 cm / Framed: 34 cm x 29 cm. From the library and personal archive of irish photographer John Minihan. Titled and signed by John Minihan verso with his Copyright stamp. Beautifully framed. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives.nnThe work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell.nIn between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first.nOver the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer".nnMinihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality;nn 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.'nnMinihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing,nn 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'.nnAmong his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996.nHe is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. nMinihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991. Candid portrait photograph of Alexander Trocchi in profile, taken at the 1962 International Writers' Conference held at McEwan Hall, Edinburgh. The conference gained some notoriety from the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid, the latter calling the former "cosmopolitan scum." Henry Miller and William Burroughs sided with Trocchi, who replied, "I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy."The photographer, Peter Keen (1928-2009), was commissioned to record the event for THE SUNDAY TIMES. His other notable work includes portraiture - some in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - and the photographic illustrations to Ted Hughes's RIVER (London, 1983). Location/localizacao: 3-A4-B-59

First edition of this important assemblage of texts and charts, reproduced from original material in the India Office Library and Records, London and in the Department of Manuscripts, the British Library. "This is a publication of sea charts, harbour plans, coastal views and topographical descriptions produced during the survey of the shores and islands of the Persian Gulf carried out between 1820 and 1829 by officers of the Bombay Marine on the orders of the Bombay Government. Despite the long time that Europeans had sailed in the Gulf, the 1820s survey was the first systematic examination of its coastal topography" (Introduction). Cook here reproduces seven articles, drawn from manuscripts and printed sources held in British institutions. The articles are: a) BRUCKS, G. B. "Draft Chapters for an unpublished Account of the Survey of the Persian Gulf", c.1835 (British Library: Add MS 14382); b) MAUGHAN, Philip. "Plan for conducting the Survey of the South Coast of the Persian Gulf", 16 August 1821 (IOR: F/4/676, collection 18677); c) HOUGHTON, M. "Account of Part of the Southern Coast or Arabian Side of the Persian Gulf between Ras Musandam and Dubai", 1822 (IOR: X/10309). Facsimile of the original manuscript followed by a transcript. d) BRUCKS, G. B. "Memoir descriptive of the Navigation of the Gulf of Persia", c.1830; from Selections from the Records of the Bombay Government, NS, vol. XXIV, Bombay 1856, pp. 531–634; e) "Sailing Directions for the Gulf", 1836; from James Horsburgh, India Directory, or Directions for Sailing to and from East Indies (London 1836), Vol. 1, pp. 305–77; f) WHITELOCK, H. H. "Descriptive Sketch of the Islands and Coast situated at the Entrance of the Persian Gulf"; from Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, Vol. 8, 1838, pp. 170–188; g) WHITELOCK, H. H. "An Account of the Arabs who inhabit the Coast between Ras-el Kheimah and Abothubee [Abu Dhabi] in the Gulf of Persia, generally called the Pirate Coast"; from Transactions of the Bombay Geographical Society, vol. 1, 1836–8, pp. 32–54.         Billy Bathgate

London: Peters Fraser and Dunlop. 1990. Stoppard's "Revised First Draft" screenplay for the film based on Doctorow's novel, released in theaters in 1991, directed by Robert Benton and starring Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Willis, Loren Dean, and Nicole Kidman. Included is a Paramount Pictures internal memo from the year before, summarizing the novel and weighing the challenges of bringing it to the screen, and concluding, "Despite the difficulties here, if a way can be found to bring Billy's journey to the screen with even some of its force and vision intact, this could make a compelling, classy, big film." Paramount, however, ultimately passed on the idea: the film was released, with a Stoppard screenplay, by Touchstone Pictures. The memo is stapled once and folded once; near fine, laid into the screenplay, which is bradbound in plain blue cardstock covers with a small abrasion on the front and a wrinkled corner on the back; near fine. The title is written on the spine and foredge. An interesting look at Hollywood's take on a classic literary novel, and a look at an early version of the film: difficulties in adapting the material to the screen -- as suggested in the Paramount memo -- led to changes in the storyline that caused Doctorow to distance himself from the film, and presumably contributed to the film's relatively poor critical reception and commercial success. Uncommon. First Edition. No Binding. Near Fine.

        Age of Iron

New York: Random House, 1990. Uncorrected Proof. Uncorrected Proof. Fine in printed yellow wrappers. An unread copy. Set in apartheid-era South Africa, Age of Iron explores the insidious nature of complicity and reflects on the failure of language to maintain its authority in a complex postcolonial world. Like many of her white compatriots, Elizabeth Curren, a professor of classics who is dying of cancer, has remained willfully blind to the violence and degradation around her. Signed by the author. Signed proofs by this reclusive South African Nobel Laureate, who now lives in Australia, are quite uncommon.
