Amsterdam, Netherlands: Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Silver-Gelatin Vintage Print of the classic Willem Diepraam photograph. Limited Edition of 15 signed, titled, and dated copies. Print size is 11 X 20 inches. It is elegantly framed in white matte stock paper and contrastingly rich dark wood frame. Full frame size is 29 X 23 inches. The back is mounted in Plexiglas in order to show the signature. The photograph is of a young boy being chased by a pack of wild dogs. The white craggy landscape is streaked with long, undulating gray lines (as if by design); it looms over the tiny subjects and appears to envelop them, the Universal and the particular merged in one stunning photographic image. The photograph is named after the place where the incident actually took place, was witnessed, and captured permanently on film by Willem Diepraam (he will not reveal if the dogs caught up with the boy and killed him). As one has come to expect of a photographer who is both a moralist and a formalist, the image is an aesthetic triumph as well as a genuine evocation of unmitigated horror. One of his acknowledged masterpieces, it is beautifully reproduced as a doublespread in the monograph, "Willem Diepraam" (2001). Willem Diepraam is a Dutch photojournalist who has published several books in Europe, none of which is available here. Knowledge of his brilliant work is long overdue in the United States. A "must-have" print for Willem Diepraam collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed, titled, and dated in black ink-pen on verso (visible through the Plexiglas mounting on the back) by the photographer: "Willem Diepraam LOMO DE CORVINA, PANAMERICA SUR, LIMA, PERU, 1990" . This print is a contemporary photography classic. All copies of the Limited Edition are now in private hands or public collections. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is elegantly framed, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. It was obtained from Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago, the photographer's American gallery, and a Certificate of Provenance from us comes with the print. A rare signed print thus. One of the greatest living photographers. A flawless collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLEM DIEPRAAM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

        Edwardian Tennis Match:Men's Doubles

Italy: circa 1990. Oil on copper. 12 x 23 1/2 inches. 22k gold leaf frame with veneer panel. 17 x 28 3/4 inches. Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged in polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including of course the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection.

        Typescript of Killer Diller

[c. 1990]. Two typescript drafts of Edgerton's fourth novel. One draft is warmly inscribed by Edgerton to Dudley Jahnke "with greatest appreciation for your help in the book business -- and music business -- and all else" and dated "28 March 90." Killer Diller deals with a struggling musician who forms the Killer Diller Blues Band, thus the reference to Jahnke's help with the "music business." Comb-bound in cardstock covers and titled in Edgerton's hand. This draft reproduces a number of the author's changes, which are especially heavy at the beginning of the book. A note in Edgerton's hand on the first page states that "The copy gets cleaner in a few pages." Near fine. The other draft, approximately 250 loose photocopied sheets from a dot matrix printer original, reproduces heavy editing by "SR," with SR's title page. This draft differs substantially from the bound draft, and the opening of the book [at least] is entirely different. Fine. Together with an envelope, hand-addressed by Edgerton to Dudley Jahnke, the recipient of both drafts. The novel, in a form that varies from both drafts above, was published by Algonquin Books in 1991. It was the basis for a limited release film in 2004 which won an award at the Heartland Film Festival. Edgerton, in addition to being a Guggenheim Fellow, has won the North Carolina Award for Literature. An interesting look at a work-in-progress by an important North Carolina author. . First Edition.

Adults Alphabets. Examples of English Press Alphabet Books from the last hundred years with an Alphabetical description, copious illustrations and a checklist of Press Alphabet Books

(Oxford): Hanborough Parrot, 1990. Quarto. 45, (3)pp. From an edition of 170, this is one of twenty-five copies hand-colored by Sylvia Stokeld and signed by the author. The colophon states that 85 copies were to be Pochoir colored, but in a letter to noted Irish collector Alan Clodd laid in, the publisher, Dennis Hall, explains, "My wife who was doing the hand coloring had a small mutiny with the thought of hand coloring 85 'Adult Alphabets' and 85 'Haslewood Books' as it took much longer than envisaged - so compromise was reached and we decided to do only 25 each..." He goes on to write that the remaining 60 copies would be sold as "Intermediates", with only the three woodcuts from William Nicholson's "An Alphabet" colored and the book in a slipcase. This copy is Pochoir colored throughout, to every letter that was originally published in color. Fine in patterned cloth-covered boards with a hand-colored paper label to top board and a spine label. Small smudge left during coloring process to one page. Housed in hand-colored slipcase, which is slightly worn at edges and very lightly soiled.

Newtown, Wales: Gwasg Gregynog, 1990. No. X OF 15 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES (of a total edition of 210). Hardcover. In the Special Distinctive Brockman Binding,Featuring Medieval-Style Strapped Elements. 457 x 343 mm (18 x 13 1/2). x, 33, [1] pp. Retold by Carl Lofmark. No. X OF 15 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES (of a total edition of 210). IN A STRIKING SPECIAL BINDING BY JAMES BROCKMAN, described by Esslemont & Hughes as "semi-limp honey-coloured alum-tawed calf suede boards, with toned vellum doublures, decorated with stained vellum straps laced through the covers[, and] with tablets of wood, bone and enamelled metal on the spine"; top edge stained yellow. In a fine green buckram solander box lined with brilliant red silk over padding. With 12 woodcuts by Stefan Mrozewski, 11 of them full-page. Esslemont & Hughes 21. In mint condition. This is a very fine example of a privately printed book representing the resurrected spirit of the Gregynog Press, the present copy in an innovative binding by one of Britain's finest present-day binders. Using the original Gregynog machinery on loan from the National Library of Wales, Gwasg Gregynog was begun as an effort to revive the spirit of the original Gregynog Press, which produced its last book in 1940. The present impressive folio is an English prose retelling of the major Medieval German epic poem about the knight Percival's search for the Holy Grail. The impressively large and richly detailed wood engravings were done in the 1930s by Polish artist Stefan Mrozewski (1894-1974), who was known for the intricate textures he achieved by using multiple burins. Our special copy was covered by James Brockman (b. 1946), a past president of Designer Bookbinders and the Society of Bookbinders who apprenticed as a finisher at Blackwell's, studied with Ivor Robinson, and served as assistant to Sydney Cockerell at Cambridge from 1968-73. Three years later in Oxford he opened his own bindery, which continues to provide fine bindings to discerning collectors. The oversized limp suede binding Brockman has produced for this work seems in its basic material and pointed lacings to reflect primitive Medieval weaponry and attire; in any case, we have never seen anything remotely like it. In sum, the fine printing in Bembo type done on handmade paper, the memorably animated woodcuts, and the distinctive and expertly executed binding combine here to produce an extremely attractive book in the best tradition of the original Gregynog Press.

Illustrated with 54 woodengravings depicting the birds and beasts found in Shakespeare's plays and poems, plus two portraits of the Bard: one etching and one woodengraving and one etching by Alan James Robinson. This book uses Shakespeare's original texts addressing the natural history, folklore, and mythology of the birds and beasts in his plays. The commentary was written by Arthur F. Kinney, Thomas W. Copeland Professor Literary History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The text was set at M & H Type Foundry in San Francisco and printed letterpress by Harold McGrath in black within a caramel-colored rule with caramel ink used for Shakespeare's own words on each page. Published on the tenth anniversary of the press, this is a worthy monument.
See an Image.
William Klein. Una città, i mondiali. Torino '90 (Signed)

1990 - Inscribed and Signed by William Klein. " To Rob. William Klein.Introduction by Giovanni Chiaramonte. Text by Guy Mandery. Federico Motta Editore, Milan, 1990. 176 pp. First edition. Small folio. Hardbound. Photo illustrated dust jacket. Numerous full page gravure reproductions. Text in Italian. This book by Klein was only published in Italy. Torino, being the smallest city Klein documented for a monograph, is among the most intimate of his books. It focuses heavily on the city's infatuation with soccer. The end papers are photo illustrated crowd scenes. Anecdotally, we hear that the city of Torino had published the book to celebrate the World Cup matches being held there. They were only distributed in town, and when Italy was knocked out in the semifinals, getting only third place, they were so upset they stopped handing them out and eventually destroyed many of the remaining books. An excellent copy [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
