        Arabian Sands

London: Collins,, 1990. Octavo. Original black cloth, title gilt to the spine. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and 40 plates, 8 of them double-page, 8 maps to the text, some full-page. A very good copy in price-clipped jacket. Originally published in 1959, this the second Collins edition, with an additional, and telling, one-page preface describing Thesiger's return to the region in 1977, and again in 1990. This copy signed on the title page. This was Thesiger's first book and "and, in his opinion, his finest" (ODNB) "During the years that I was in Arabia I never thought that I would write a book about my travels … Seven years after leaving Arabia I showed some photographs I had taken to Graham Watson and he strongly urged me to write a book about the desert. This I refused to do … The following day Graham Watson came to see me again, and this time he brought Mark Longman with him. After much argument the two of them persuaded me to try to write this book. Now that I have finished it I am grateful to them, for the effort to remember every detail has brought back vividly into my mind the Bedu amongst whom I travelled, and the vast empty land across which I rode on camels for ten thousand miles" (Introduction).

Birds of Australia Supplement ( All Species Discovered After Vols.I-VII)

Melbourne: Hill House. Fine/No dust jacket. 1990. Facsimile Edition. Hardback. Elephant Folio 0947352074 First limited facsimile edition thus. Original green Japanese Saifu cloth gilt, 80 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. In excelllent condition with minimal wear only, no inscriptions. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimiles of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale (this copy is stamped no. 0128 to the front paste-down). This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." Please see the other Gould titles we are offering in this impressive edition. This book is held in stock. .

        Another Day in Paradise

Albuquerque: Mark Attwood, 1990. 1st and only edition: "This book is no. 41 in a limited edition of 50. Printed from linocuts on Rives heavyweight paper, using a Dufa flat-bed offset press." On the next page, preceding the title page: "Another Day in Paradise is a collection of images by a group of people from different countries and backgrounds. Artists, printers, students, curators, a director and a doctor participated. Each person was invited to make a linocut on the theme of 'Another Day in Paradise'. No images were edited. One book was printed for each participant." The book is lg. 8vo, bound in coarse linen with no titles, untrimmed edges. Condition vg+; the binding has been slightly distorted by the laying in of a linocut, described below. No text in the book other than that quoted above.. Attwood, whose blindstamped chop-mark appears on the above-quoted limitation page, was certified a master printer by Albuquerque's Tamarind Institute about this time; he was soon to return to his native South Africa to found the Artists' Press, which arguably has become as important to printmaking in Africa as Tamarind is in the U.S. Famous South African artist Erika Hibbert, currently published there by Attwood, contributes to this book in what may be her first appearance. Also appearing are Rebecca Schnelker, Tamarind curator since 1978 and co-compiler of the Tamarind catalog raisonne; Garo Antreasian, Tamarind's first director; Jeff Ryan, who with Attwood helped invent the technique of dry lithography; Rita Deanin Abbey, author Edward Abbey's second wife, who still exhibits in Santa Fe; Bill Lagattuta, shop manager at Tamarind; Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, a Flathead-Shoshone artist whose work is in much demand; Pawel Frackiewicz, who heads the Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw, Poland; Marge Devon, a director of Tamarind; Mary Ristow, who had a solo show in 1999; Jose Rodriguez, now a well-known plein-air painter; Valerie Arber, whose work inhabits the Rule Gallery in Denver, and about 20 others. This copy apparently belonged to contributor Martha Slaymaker, who is exhibited in the Albuquerque airport, among many other places, and was a fine artist in many media. Her son now runs the company she founded, Slaymaker Fine Art Ltd. Laid in are 2 extra copies of her litho, and also her original linocut, the piece of linoleum itself. Interestingly, she SIGNED the linoleum, but faintly, so her name cannot be seen on the printed versions. . First Edition. Hard Cover.

San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1990. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1990. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 260 pages. The artist/photographer&#39;s book-length account on subject. One of the greatest documentary photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in this New And Revised Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run in both Hardcover and Softcover Editions. The Revised Edition is now very scarce. Presents, in a beautifully produced volume, Peter Beard&#39;s sequel to his masterpiece, "The End of The Game" (1965). As their poetic title suggests, Peter Beard and Alistair Graham recount their intrepid, often "intimate" (their word), and often near-fatal encounters with the man-eating crocodile, particularly those who lie in wait in Kenya&#39;s Lake Rudolf. The self-portrait of Peter Beard writing on the ground while most of his body is seemingly swallowed up by a crocodile is world-famous, one of those few iconic photographs that people who do not particularly care about photography have seen, know, and can now photo-shop. Beard&#39;s documentary work on the irreversible devastation of the African continent was pioneering and ground-breaking. He was fortunate enough to see, as a young man of 21, the Africa that no longer exists today, an extinction that he prophesied more than fifty years ago. Beard&#39;s African romance began in America, when he first read and fell under the spell of Isak Dinesen&#39;s "Out of Africa" (1938), one of the greatest books of the 20th century, and it is impossible to think of his work without Dinesen&#39;s literary masterpiece in mind. When NASA, in its quixotic (but deeply moving) quest to reach out to other possible beings in the universe, was asked by the United States Government to send just one book to join the other earthly artifacts of "The Voyager", the time capsule flown infinitely into outer space, they chose Peter Beard&#39;s "The End of The Game". When he had to choose between marrying Princess Lee Radziwill, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis&#39; glamorous sister, and Africa, Peter Beard chose Africa. "The best book on crocodiles ever published" (The Chicago Tribune). An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Beard collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in blue pen across the title page by the artist/photographer: "Salaams, Peter Beard". There is no recipient named. Beard also stamped the page with his left handprint in matching blue color. Peter Beard often signs with either his thumb, hand, or footprint (or all three). He has said that they are the oldest human signatures, and in his case, a gesture of his African-ness. Signed copies available online command thousands of dollars. This is a reasonable and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 200 plates. Peter Beard&#39;s "The End of The Game" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER BEARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0877015392.

Les Nourritures Terrestres, Lithographies originales de Pierre Boncompain

Paris: Editions Michele Trinckvel. NF. 1990. 1st thus. Boxed. Yellow cloth covered solander box with title and vignette of a woman blocked on upper board and titles on spine, a couple of small marks to cloth, box contains sheets in original wrapper, illustrated by Pierre Boncompain with ten colour lithos and twenty b&w lithos with an additional twenty-six litho. illustrations to text, No.236 of an edition of 300 signed by the author on the colophon. , Andre Gide (1869-1951) was a French author and winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize for Literature. Gide&#39;s childhood was spent in the relative isolation of Normandy and he grew up in a family with a religious and puritanical world view. It was the conflict between the strict moralism of his upbringing and his own nature that would power Gide&#39;s writing and his work, both the autobiographical work and the fiction, explores his own battle between self realisation and the moral constraints instilled in him as a child. This work (the title translates as &#39;Fruits of the Earth&#39;) deals very directly with this conflict. Gide would acknowledge the influence of Nietzsche&#39;s Also Sprach Zarathustra on this book which was written in 1895 but the real roots of the book lie in Gide&#39;s travels in North Africa in 1893-94 where he came to accept his own attraction to boys. When published in 1897 the book, with its theme of abandoning rules and stability in favour of adventure and excess was not well received, however after the First World War it gained a considerable following, influencing a generation of young writers. Gide was a prolific writer, writing both fiction and non-fiction until his death in 1951. In 1952 the Catholic Church placed all his works in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and if Gide&#39;s work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the face of moralistic and puritanical authority then this seems almost to be a compliment., Folio 13" - 23" tall, 209 [5] pp .

Amsterdam, Netherlands: Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Silver-Gelatin Vintage Print of the classic Willem Diepraam photograph. Limited Edition of 15 signed, titled, and dated copies. Print size is 11 X 20 inches. It is elegantly framed in white matte stock paper and contrastingly rich dark wood frame. Full frame size is 29 X 23 inches. The back is mounted in Plexiglas in order to show the signature. The photograph is of a young boy being chased by a pack of wild dogs. The white craggy landscape is streaked with long, undulating gray lines (as if by design); it looms over the tiny subjects and appears to envelop them, the Universal and the particular merged in one stunning photographic image. The photograph is named after the place where the incident actually took place, was witnessed, and captured permanently on film by Willem Diepraam (he will not reveal if the dogs caught up with the boy and killed him). As one has come to expect of a photographer who is both a moralist and a formalist, the image is an aesthetic triumph as well as a genuine evocation of unmitigated horror. One of his acknowledged masterpieces, it is beautifully reproduced as a doublespread in the monograph, "Willem Diepraam" (2001). Willem Diepraam is a Dutch photojournalist who has published several books in Europe, none of which is available here. Knowledge of his brilliant work is long overdue in the United States. A "must-have" print for Willem Diepraam collectors. <b><i> This is a copy of the Limited Edition, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed, titled, and dated in black ink-pen on verso (visible through the Plexiglas mounting on the back) by the photographer: "Willem Diepraam LOMO DE CORVINA, PANAMERICA SUR, LIMA, PERU, 1990" . This print is a contemporary photography classic. All copies of the Limited Edition are now in private hands or public collections. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is elegantly framed, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. It was obtained from Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago, the photographer&#39;s American gallery, and a Certificate of Provenance from us comes with the print.         Edwardian Tennis Match:Men&#39;s Doubles

Italy: circa 1990. Oil on copper. 12 x 23 1/2 inches. 22k gold leaf frame with veneer panel. 17 x 28 3/4 inches. Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged in polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including of course the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection.

        Typescript of Killer Diller

[c. 1990]. Two typescript drafts of Edgerton&#39;s fourth novel. One draft is warmly inscribed by Edgerton to Dudley Jahnke "with greatest appreciation for your help in the book business -- and music business -- and all else" and dated "28 March 90." Killer Diller deals with a struggling musician who forms the Killer Diller Blues Band, thus the reference to Jahnke&#39;s help with the "music business." Comb-bound in cardstock covers and titled in Edgerton&#39;s hand. This draft reproduces a number of the author&#39;s changes, which are especially heavy at the beginning of the book. A note in Edgerton&#39;s hand on the first page states that "The copy gets cleaner in a few pages." Near fine. The other draft, approximately 250 loose photocopied sheets from a dot matrix printer original, reproduces heavy editing by "SR," with SR&#39;s title page. This draft differs substantially from the bound draft, and the opening of the book [at least] is entirely different. Fine. Together with an envelope, hand-addressed by Edgerton to Dudley Jahnke, the recipient of both drafts. The novel, in a form that varies from both drafts above, was published by Algonquin Books in 1991. It was the basis for a limited release film in 2004 which won an award at the Heartland Film Festival. Edgerton, in addition to being a Guggenheim Fellow, has won the North Carolina Award for Literature. An interesting look at a work-in-progress by an important North Carolina author. . First Edition.
