So z. [FINAL TYPESCRIPT FOR HIS NOVEL "BALOOK"]

np np: np, 1990. First Edition. Very Good +. 8.5" x 11" typescript (computer word-processor-generated, almost certainly daisy wheel) on perforated printer paper. Minor creasing to some pages. A bit of toning overall. Remnants of a smoky smell (both Anthony and his wife were smokers). Two small corrections to the text, presumably by Anthony, else clean throughout. Very good plus to near fine. [2], 237, [1]. The complete typescript and author's note for Anthony's 1990 young-adult sci-fi novel BALOOK, the publisher's copy sent by Anthony to his publisher Underwood-Miller who brought the novel out in 1990. Published the same year as Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, Anthony's story also revolves around the genetic resurrection of an extinct dinosaur. A coming-of-age story of sorts comparing the maturation of the Baluchitherium "Balook" with that of his young friend Thor. Perhaps most noteworthy, however, for Anthony's "Author's Note" which closes the book (as well as the manuscript here). It recounts BALOOK's long and circuitous road to publication and remains one of Anthony most concentrated and sustained pieces on the science fiction genre, his working methods, and the writer's craft. It ends, appropriately enough, thusly: "I mentioned word processing programs. I had discovered one called Finalword that promised to be even better for me than my prior ones [...] But it was complex, and not perfectly adapted to me system or my Dvorak keyboard; it would be a monster to break in. So I decided to use [...] a short novel to break it in; once I have novelized a thing, I really understand it [...] The available novel was Balook." In other words, THIS typescript.

        Vishnu Crew Stews Vindaloo Anew

New York: Purgatory Pie Press, 1990. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 61 of 74 copies although according to the press, the full edition was not produced as their supply of perforated aluminum ran out. This copy is signed by the author, designer, and printer on stickers, which are affixed to the interior of the case. Created as a homage to the Hindu god Vishnu who is typically depicted as a blue being with four arms and occasionally with four heads. This is a sculptural book construction with moveable parts made from aluminum, brass, paper, felt, and steel. Four miniature book structures in the shapes of small heads are affixed to a large rotating circular wheel. A humanoid body which is hinged to the wheel can be positioned beneath any of the four heads. Each book is cleverly attached to the base with a screw and washer, which also serve as the eyeballs for each head. The covers of each book are metal with accordioned paper pages printed in green and orange with a verse and linocut illustrations. The text reads like a cryptic mantra: "Ganges seers fear hearing gears," "Man can't do what Katman don't," "derrick din decks Delhi duck," and "Ladakh crocs mock clox' tox." The wheel fits snugly within a repurposed film reel canister, which has been fitted with felt and adorned with labels and stickers from the press. One of the stickers bears the signature of the author in pencil. Letterpress printed on a Vandercook press on Khadi Jute Indian handmade paper. Elemental orchestration by Esther K. Smith. Linocuts by Dikko Faust. An intriguing construction that begs to be handled. In fine condition. The film canister is lightly worn with a few scuff marks. Unpaginated. ARTB/120512.

THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES with archive of engravings from the book

Chelsea, VT: Chelsea Green Publishing, (1990). Hardcover. New, still in package, shrinkwrapped. Occasional minor smudging to the art. Michael McCurdy. Specially packaged presentation including the book and an audio cassette with music composed and performed by the Paul Winter Consort and narration by Robert J. Lurtsema, both encased in a box with illustrations and text. The book is illustrated with wood engravings by Michael McCurdy. In addition to the package as it was sold in stores, there are also two large (13" x 18") illustrated advertising posters for the book, both SIGNED in pencil by the artist, as well as a collection of thirty wood engravings from the book printed on various types of paper and in various sizes, mostly 11" x 15" with many of them SIGNED in pencil by the artist and often titled with a limitation number usually one of 50 or 100 copies. The addition of the engravings and posters allows for a wonderful documentation and presentation of this title. Originally published in 1954, this story has grown in popularity along with the ecology movement. From the box: "The MAN WHO PLANTED TREES is the story of Elzeard Bouffier, a man of great simplicity and determination. Bouffier, having lost his wife and son, retreats to a remote and desolate part of France. 'It was his opinion that this land was dying for want of trees.' So, alone with his dog and his sheep, he commences his life work--the steadfast planting of one hundred acorns each day. Over the course of 30 years, laboring in peace, without interruption, and in complete anonymity, Bouffier transforms the landscape. Once desiccated, ravaged by relentless winds, and forsaken by people, the region is brought back to life by Bouffier's trees.... Paul Winter and Earth Music Productions bring this powerful eco-fable to life with music especially composed and performed by members of the Consort. Narrated by Robert J. Lurtsema, host and executive producer of one of public radio's most popular and innovative music programs, WGBH's 'Morning Pro Musica,' this special recording captures Elzeard Bouffier's determination and magnificent generosity of spirit in completing 'a work worthy of God.' More than anything, the narration and music reinforce the Story's message of hope.

The introduction indicates the images chosen were from Casson's private collection and the second volume was only being considered when the first was published. The whole project was inspired by Bernard Loates. It seems the set is very scarce in the market place, this being the only set I have encountered since it was published 20 years ago. It seems many of the sets were broken up and each print sold individually in the 1990's..

The General in His Labyrinth [Signed Uncorrected Proof]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990. First edition. Wrappers. Fine. A Fine copy of the American Uncorrected Proof, INSCRIBED, SIGNED AND DATED BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ on the half-title as follows: " “Mientras nos vemos / en Los Angeles, un / abriro par Ted. / Gabriel / [underscore] / 92”. (Translated to English, the inscription reads: In remembrance of our travels in Los Angeles, for Ted.”) Although we have not identified "Ted", the nature of the inscription indicates that this is an Association Copy at some level as the two men clearly spent time together in Los Angeles. One of the 20th Century's most significant authors, Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature --- a prestigious international Literary Prize given in recognition of outstanding achievement in poetry, fiction, or drama and conferred solely on the basis of literary merit, being awarded for a body of work rather than for a single one, and frequently called the "American Nobel". A number of Authors who have won the Neustadt Prize have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, including Marquez, Czeslaw Milosz, Octavio Paz, and Tomas Tranströmer. Marquez won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflicts", making him the first Colombian, and fourth Latin American, to win the Prize. A fictional account of Simon Bolivar's last days, "The General in his Labyrinth" traces Bolivar's final journey, a trip from Bogotá to Columbia's Caribbean coast in his attempt to leave South America for exile in Europe. This is a Fine copy of the Uncorrected Proof with the Publisher's Review letter stapled to the front wrapper's verso. Copies of this Uncorrected Proof are not terribly common, signed copies are, of course, even more scarce, and signed copies in a condition as nice as is this copy are scarce indeed. A FINE COPY OF THE UNCORRECTED PROOF, SIGNED BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ. QUITE SCARCE.

        Ubu coq *

Roth & Sauter, Denges 1990.
