Observed Behavior of Highly Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering" WITH "High-Energy Inelastic e-p Scattering at 6(deg) and 10(deg)" in Physical Review Letters 23 Issue 16, October 20, 1969, pp. 930-939

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE FIRST EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE OF THE EXISTENCE OF QUARKS WITHIN THE ATOMIC NUCLEUS. In demonstrating that quarks are real particles, Friedman, Kendall, and Taylor confirmed Murray Gell-Mann's hypothesis on their existence; for their discovery, the trio were awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physics. Gell-Mann's landmark work positing the 'idea' of quarks was based on the assumption that strongly interacting particles he classified (called hadrons) were all "built up from more elementary constituents" - that he famously called 'quarks' (Levinovitz, The Nobel Prize, 44). Few people, however, "believed that quarks were real particles. Despite many searches in accelerators and in cosmic rays, no one had found an isolated quark… As Gell-Mann himself said: 'Such particles [quarks] presumably are not real but we may use them in our field theory anyway'" (Alan Lightman, The Discoveries, pp. 457-). Friedman, Kendall, and Taylor proved the existence of quarts by using "high-energy electrons from the then new accelerator, and [showing] that they bounced back in an unexpected way from the protons and neutrons in a gas target" (Quinn, The Mystery of the Missing Antimatter, 97). "Friedman's group was startled… to observe that the scattering pattern suggested not that the positive charge of the proton was uniformly spread out, but rather that charges were confined to point-like centers within the protons. Further experiments determined that the source of these point charges existing within the protons (and neutrons) were indeed evidence of the recently proposed elementary particle, the quark" (Manhattan Rare Books). "The electrons ricocheted off hard point-like objects inside the proton. These were soon shown to be identical with the quarks, thus simplifying the physicist's picture of the world; but the results could not be entirely explained by quarks alone. The Nobel Prize-winning experiment indicated that the proton also contained electrically neutral constituents. These were soon found to be "gluons," particles gluing the quarks together in protons and other particles. A new rung on the ladder of creation had revealed itself and a new epoch in the history of physics had begun" (Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, 1990). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: The American Physical Society. (10.5 x 9 inches; 263 x 225mm). Physical Review Letters, 23, 16, October 20, 1969. Fine condition inside and out.

The box opens to an original etching, framed by the box, by d'Arbeloff with the title, author and artist. Box size when folded: 13-3/16 inches x 11-15/16 inches x 2-1/16 inches. The 40-page text is handwritten in red and black calligraphy by Sally Johnson, printed by photo litho by Atelier Rosenstiel The images within the book were printed by d'Arbeloff from collograph plates with relief and intaglio images over text. There are six separate loose etchings included with this deluxe copy, each numbered and signed. The cassette recording of the play was produced and recorded October 4, 1979 at Elephant Recording Studio, London, with Charles Turner in the role of Fungus and Jack le White as Curmudgeonly. The play, "Fungus & Curmudgeonly," was written in 1976 and performed for the first time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that year then in Stratford-upon-Avon at the Macbeth Room, Shakespeare Hotel in summer 1977. Gerardo Guerrieri, Theatre Critic for "Il Giorno" Milan wrote, ".The play emerges as a formidable parody of Homo Shakespearianus, to be put in a Museum of Natural History. The Man-Showman, half actor with his unstoppable desire for applause.and half voyeur. The play has density, authenticity and originality." This is certainly one of d'Arbeloff's most important works. She has had a one- woman show at the Victoria and Albert and her books are in the Tate, Rijksmuseum Meermanno Westreenainum, Kunstgewerbe Museum, Biblioteca Nazionale, Australian National Library, Library of Congress, Newberry, Bridwell, Humanities Research Center, Houghton, Firestone, Grunwald Center, etc. See an Image.         Edwardian Tennis Match:Men's Doubles

Italy 1990 - Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged in polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including of course the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection. Oil on copper.

Raguagli d'alcune missioni fatte dalli padri della Compagnia di Giesu nell'Indie Orientali, cioè nelle provincie di Goa, e Coccinno, e nell'Africa in Capo Verde.Rome, Bartolomeo Zannetti, 1615. Small 8vo (14 x 9 cm). With woodcut "IHS" device in scrollwork cartouche on title, woodcut decorated initials, and tailpieces built up from arabesque fleurons. 18th-century(?) sheepskin parchment.

De Bakker & Sommervogel VIII, col. 1337, item 1e; ICCU (9 copies); Lach & Van Kley, Asia III (part 4), p. 1990 (citing Streit); Streit V, 75; WorldCat (3 copies). One of the two or three editions, all dated 1615 and all rare, of a collection of documents in Italian, reporting on Jesuit missions in the East Indies, Goa, Cochin China and Africa undertaken by the Jesuit Society. After a two-page letter from the printer (particularly mentioning reports from Ethiopia) come reports from the Ottoman realms, incorporating the two letters from Jerome (Girolamo or Hieronymus ) Xavier (1549-1617), grand-nephew of St Francis Xavier, the first Goa in India (undated) and the other dated 1611. Next comes a report from Monopotapa in South Africa, one from the Cape Verde islands off the coast of West Africa, and finally a collection of miscellaneous reports including ones from Madura in Indonesia, Cochin in southwest India , "San Tomaso" (in Madagasgar?) and the Maluku islands in Indonesia. Lazzaro Scoriggio published a Naples edition in the same year and the British Library seems to have a Rome edition without the publisher's name, also from the same year, but the present edition seems likely to be the first. No editions are recorded in later years. With a contemporary owner's inscription on the title-page (partly trimmed off) and an 18th-century(?) list of missions on an endleaf. Trimmed close to the text, often shaving the signature and catch-word, and with a small tear in 1 leaf and a couple minor stains, but still in good condition.

Fungus and Curmudgeonly. Images by Natalia d'Arbeloff

London: [ NdA Editions. 1990]. First Edition, one of 10 deluxe copies only all on J. Green, Rives, and Arches paper from a total issue of 35, all signed by the author and artist. Page size: 12-1/8 inches x 5-1/8 inches. Bound: blue cloth over boards hand-printed in black by d'Arbeloff, binding executed by Jen Lindsay, collograph endpapers by d'Arbeloff. Housed in a hinged triptych "stage-box" designed by d'Arbeloff and executed by Dorset Bookbinding Co., covered in mulberry Japanese paper with decorated side panels containing the book and cassette recording of the play. The box opens to an original etching, framed by the box, by d'Arbeloff with the title, author and artist. Box size when folded: 13-3/16 inches x 11-15/16 inches x 2-1/16 inches. The 40-page text is handwritten in red and black calligraphy by Sally Johnson, printed by photo litho by Atelier Rosenstiel The images within the book were printed by d'Arbeloff from collograph plates with relief and intaglio images over text.. Gerardo Guerrieri, Theatre Critic for "Il Giorno" Milan wrote, "...The play emerges as a formidable parody of Homo Shakespearianus, to be put in a Museum of Natural History. The Man-Showman, half actor with his unstoppable desire for applause...and half voyeur...The play has density, authenticity and originality..." This is certainly one of d'Arbeloff's most important works.

        Canal Street

Whitney Museum, New York 1990 - Published by the Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum of Art. First in the series "Artists and Writers: American Journals", organized by May Castleberry. Printed by Stamperia Valdonega in Verona under the supervision of Martino Mardersteig. Folio, black morocco spine, gilt-lettered and yellow linen boards. Fine. A very amusing collaboration and a handsome production. Two color woodcuts , one of which is initialled by Steinberg, hand-painted by Michael Berdan, and 16 tipped-in offset lithographs. They depict the traffic, architecture and noise of Canal Street, which was Frazier's neighborhood in New York for twelve years. Canal Street leads to the Holland Tunnel, the first Hudson River vehicular tunnel, of which Frazier describes the building history. Canal Street is a vivid hodgepodge of architecture and shops, both open air and enclosed, selling everything from designer knock-offs to fruit and vegetables, and an amazing array of hardware and auto parts.
