Each volume is housed in a purpose built fold over suede box with matching endpapers and blind stamped medallions on the covers. Each volume includes a separate certificate of ownership and has the original packaging material. Limted to 300 copies and 60 Artist's proof's this being AP18. Each volume consists of 51 images produced by the Bertone lithographic process, hand numbered, titled and initialed by A.J. Casson, for a total of 102 images in total. The introduction indicates the images chosen were from Casson's private collection and the second volume was only being considered when the first was published. The whole project was inspired by Bernard Loates. It seems the set is very scarce in the market place, this being the only set I have encountered since it was published 20 years ago. It seems many of the sets were broken up and each print sold individually in the 1990's. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bd.2: Schiele & Schön, 1990. 1990. Hardcover. Good. 21,5 x 15 x 1,5 cm. Richard Nixon, who opened diplomatic relations between the United States and communist China, congratulates a Republican congressman on sustaining George H. Bush's veto of a bill to protect Chinese exchange students in the United States only six months after the Tiananmen Square Massacre

Typed Letter Signed "RN," 1 page, 7.25" x 10.5 on his personal letterhead, Woodcliff Lake, NJ, January 26, 1990, and adding his holograph salutation "Dear Bill," to Representative Charles Wilson "Bill" Young (1930-2013) of Florida. One horizontal crease, stamped receipt date at left, else very fine condition. Nixon writes in full: "This is just a note to tell you how much I admired your political courage in joining that small band of Republicans in the House to sustain the President's veto on the Chinese students bill. Your vote may be unpopular in the short run, but will prove right in the long run both in the strategic interests of the United States and in the human rights interests of the Chinese people. I am enclosing a memorandum (not present) I sent to Al Simpson setting forth my views on the issue. You may find it useful in answering some of your hate mail!"

The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, Sugar Street.

Doubleday 1990-1992., New York - Uncorrected proofs of author's most well known work; a trilogy originally published in Egypt in the 1950's and which garnered him the Nobel Prize in literature decades later in 1988. Octavo, 3 volumes. Original illustrated wrappers. Each volume is signed by Mahfouz and in near fine condition. Books signed by Mahfouz are exceptionally rare as he left Egypt only twice during his life, each time only but for a short time. The Cairo Trilogy traces three generations of the family of patriarch Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, who rules his household with a strict hand while living a secret life of self-indulgence. The Trilogy is the achievement of a master storyteller reminiscent of Tolstoy. Laid into Palace Walk is the publicity from Doublday. "Naguib Mahfouz is not only a Hugo and a Dickens, but also a Galsworthy, a Mann, a Zola, and a Jules Romains" (Edward Said). Naguib Mahfouz's epic trilogy of colonial Egypt is the captivating story of a Muslim family in Cairo during Britain's occupation of Egypt. Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad is a tyrannical patriarch that governs with a strict hand while secretly living in self-indulgence. His actions doom him to witness over the course of three generations the wane of his familial influence against the themes of rising modernity, and he witnesses against his will his offspring spawn followers of Communist, Muslim fundamentalist, and powerful politicians. The Cairo Trilogy is a compelling drama with remarkable insight that deserves the Nobel Prize it won in 1988. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA (SUPPL.) (AUTHENTIC FACSIMILE EDITION) All Species Discovered after Vols. 1-7

Hill House. New;. 1990. Hardcover. 0947352074 . 80 Plates. BRAND NEW! This is not a mere reproduction. This is an exact facsimile of an original held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. It is not a reproduction, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the originals. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. This facsimile carries faithfully every spot, mark or stain as the original. It also carries the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. The color printing is so accurate that, from behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile. This facsimile is exactly the same size as the original (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). It is cased-in and bound between 4 mm. The boards are covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the book, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. This book is individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. .

Typed Contract Signed ("Katharine Hepburn") between Hepburn and Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., for the terms of publishing the Knopf and Ballantine printings of her autobiography, ME: STORIES OF MY LIFE. With an archive of associated materials, including memoranda, letters of agreement, amendments, royalty statements, copies of contracts between Knopf and foreign publishers, press clippings, etc

New York, june 18, 1990. Folio. 4 pp. (Contract) + 7 pp. of Riders to the contract, initialled by Hepburn + an attached 2 pp. Letter of Agreement between Knopf and Hepburn regarding further inducements to an agreement. Vey good. From the estate of Hepburn's agent, Freya Manston . The autobiography of Katharine Houghton Hepburn (Knopf, Ballantine 1991), America's best-known actress, whose professional career spanned over 5 decades in an era when most women's acting careers are over after the age of 35, promised from the very outset to be best seller - which indeed it was. The negotiations with Knopf over the terms of their contract (handled by Freya Manston) were complex, and were revised several times, but when the deal was done the rumor in the publishing world was that Hepburn's contract set a new record. The evidence is to be found in this archive. Certainly one of the more revealing items, however, is a characteristic letter from Hepburn to her agent, offering to revise the contract in a way which would allow Manston to collect her commission immediately - which was to be based on a percentage of the advance. As Hepburn wanted to forego the advance, an adjustment needed to be made in the contract to accommodate her agent - one that Hepburn insisted on. An important and revealing archive

        Another Day in Paradise

Mark Attwood, Albuquerque 1990 - 1st and only edition: "This book is no. 41 in a limited edition of 50. Printed from linocuts on Rives heavyweight paper, using a Dufa flat-bed offset press." On the next page, preceding the title page: "Another Day in Paradise is a collection of images by a group of people from different countries and backgrounds. Artists, printers, students, curators, a director and a doctor participated. Each person was invited to make a linocut on the theme of 'Another Day in Paradise'. No images were edited. One book was printed for each participant." The book is lg. 8vo, bound in coarse linen with no titles, untrimmed edges. Condition vg+; the binding has been slightly distorted by the laying in of a linocut, described below. No text in the book other than that quoted above. Attwood, whose blindstamped chop-mark appears on the above-quoted limitation page, was certified a master printer by Albuquerque's Tamarind Institute about this time; he was soon to return to his native South Africa to found the Artists' Press, which arguably has become as important to printmaking in Africa as Tamarind is in the U.S. Famous South African artist Erika Hibbert, currently published there by Attwood, contributes to this book in what may be her first appearance. Also appearing are Rebecca Schnelker, Tamarind curator since 1978 and co-compiler of the Tamarind catalog raisonne; Garo Antreasian, Tamarind's first director; Jeff Ryan, who with Attwood helped invent the technique of dry lithography; Rita Deanin Abbey, author Edward Abbey's second wife, who still exhibits in Santa Fe; Bill Lagattuta, shop manager at Tamarind; Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, a Flathead-Shoshone artist whose work is in much demand; Pawel Frackiewicz, who heads the Academy of Fine Art in Wroclaw, Poland; Marge Devon, a director of Tamarind; Mary Ristow, who had a solo show in 1999; Jose Rodriguez, now a well-known plein-air painter; Valerie Arber, whose work inhabits the Rule Gallery in Denver, and about 20 others. This copy apparently belonged to contributor Martha Slaymaker, who is exhibited in the Albuquerque airport, among many other places, and was a fine artist in many media. Her son now runs the company she founded, Slaymaker Fine Art Ltd. Laid in are 2 extra copies of her litho, and also her original linocut, the piece of linoleum itself. Interestingly, she SIGNED the linoleum, but faintly, so her name cannot be seen on the printed versions. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Archive of 30 letters from Ernst Mayr to Ernst Caspari (University of Rochester) and Arthur J. Cain (University of Liverpool)

Ernst Mayr 1980s-1990s - 30 letters both ALS and TLS some 1 page, others 2 or more pages. from Ernst Mayr to Ernst Casperi (University of Rochester) and Arthur J. Cain (University of Liverpool). Cain mostly attached his answer, in photocopy, some serveral pages long. Some content: to Cain from Mayr: "thanking you for your reprints, particularly the analysis of Bauhin's Pinax. It is certainly important for the history of taxonomic methods to have a perceptive analysis of the forerunners of Linnaeus. Of course every time I deal with Linnaeus I am impressed how strongly his approach is dominated by the principles of logic"Letter dated 16 Dec. 1993 with enclosures: "As far as Maniola is concerned, the enclosed copy of my letter to Turner will tell you what is involved. In his presentation of the case Ford did not make nearly as careful an analysis as he should have and instead distinguished rather sweepingly a western and an eastern type. I am sure someone will make a more careful study in the near future. I am also enclosing a copy of the Gmelin speech as well as a draft copy of my paper on Scientific Revolutions. The amount of interesting papers being published these days is enormous. What pleases me is that they all support the Darwinian paradigm. No matter how much certain people try to claim otherwise, this is demonstrably true."another letter "This is why Mendel was so frustrated in his later work, when he tried to apply the rules of hispea crosses to species crosses "Aren't they all hybrids?". Letters dated in the 1990s. "Locke's species concept was rather similar to one defended by Mill and now usually referred to as his "nature kind" concept."To Ernst Casperi he writes: "When one compares thewritings of contemporary embryologists and evolutionists of that period one realizes how completely different the conceptual framework of the two groups were. It is particularly clear whenever the embryologists criticize the thinking of the evolutionists. This is evident not only in the writings of Spemann but also from Boveri's famous speech when he was rector of Wurzburg University. I am planning to write this spring a paper with the title with the title of"Richard's Goldschmidt's Unanswered Questions. It is usuallyignored that Goldschmidt in his 1940 book raises quite a fewproblems which the reductionists "beanbag" geneticists are quite unable to answer."Ernst Mayr letter to Caspari dated 1986, mostly chatty about wife, grand-children "I presume you are please about Rita Levi-Montalcini got the Nobel Prize. All her early research was done with Viktor Hamburger. If he had continued this line of research, I presume he would have shared in the honor! But he got interested in other things."Included in the archive: Offprint: Systems of Ordering Data reprint from Biology and Philosophy, 1995. Author's Proof: Systems of Ordering Data. Photocopy of Disciplining Evolutionary Biology: Ernst Mayr. by Vassiliki Betty Smocovitis Feb. 1994. at dedication Ernst Mayrhas added " For Arthur with best wishes!         Parables & Pieces translated by Michael Feingold. Illustrated with photogravures after photographs by Judith Turner.

Vincent FitzGerald and Company, New York 1990 - First Edition thus, one of 50 copies, all on BFK Rives paper, all signed by Turner and Feingold. Page size: 11 x 13". Bound: collaged Japanese grey paper over boards, housed in black silk box, fine. Illustrating Kafka's 15 short fictions are 25 photogravures, a delicate process little used since the 19th century. The process, in which original prints are made from a photograph etched by ultraviolet light on an engraved copper plate, is used in an innovative contemporary way to reflect the great Modernist author's distinctive 20th century sensibility, with its inexplicable fears and haunting sense of helpless isolation. Rather than standing aloof from the text, Turner's images enfold it, combat it, or weave their way across it. Gatefold pages, aquatints adding almost subliminal touches of colors, and collages employing a variety of fine papers in various textures and colors, are among the techniques which add to the effect of a visual environment specially created for Kafka's lost souls to inhabit. See an Image. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
