        Edwardian Polo Match

Italy 1990 - Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged at polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including, of course, the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection. Oil on copper.

THE COMPLETE NOVELS PLUS AUTOBIOGRAPHY (Complete in 49 volumes)

London: The Trollope Society, 1990. No date but 1990's. The Novels complete in 48 uniform volumes + Trollope's autobiography; bound in the original dark brown buckram, spines lettered in gilt, and the front boards blind stamped with the colophon of The Trollope Society, top edges brown. Bindings fine and bright, the odd volume with minimal wear, contents clean and tight, no inscriptions. A fine set, virtually as new. Bibliographical information for The Trollope Society as follows: "The design and production of The Complete Novels of Anthony Trollope has been undertaken in partnership with the Folio Society, who have been famous for almost fifty years for their continuing commitment to painstaking techniques, many of which are no longer fashionable. Each title is set in hot metal, and printed lithographically by Bath Press, one of the foremost printers in England. The typeface used is the distinguished 'monotype' Bell, the first and by general consent the most attractive of the so-called 'modem' faces. It was originally cut in 1788, and used for many early editions of Trollope's novels. The text has been completely re-set in hot metal by Speedspools of Edinburgh, under the general editorship of Professor David Skilton. The paper selected by the Trollope Society is a special making, chosen for each title, of a cream tint, and is manufactured by Lancashire Mills. It is acid-free, and of archival quality. The binding is buckram throughout - still by far the most lasting casing material. Each has the title printed in gold on a black label, and the front board is blind stamped with the colophon of The Trollope Society. Each title has an introduction, specially commissioned for the series. Introducers are diverse - reflecting Trollope's enormously broad appeal - including Joanna Trollope, Mary Warnock, Antonia Fraser, A N Wilson, P D James, Robertson Davies, Victoria Glendinning, Maeve Binchy, John Mortimer, Enoch Powell, Roy Jenkins and Asa Briggs. The page format is medium octavo (9" x 5 314"). Original illustrations are used in The Society's edition only where they occurred in the first edition. Artists represented include Sir John Millais, 'Phiz' (Hablot Browne), and Frank Holl R.A. The aim is to present a series designed to the best library standards which will stand constant reading over many years. The series is published by Omnium Publishing, the publishing arm of The Trollope Society". Note this Trollope Society edition was printed in collaboration with the Folio Society edition, but with the original illustrations (where present), not the new illustrations commissioned for the Folio Society edition.. Complete Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. 8vo.

Archive of Original Photographs and Autograph Letter Signed

[c. 1990]. Sixteen original pieces of horror art (including one print and one set of contact sheets, in addition to photographs) by Potter, one of the most renowned contemporary fantasy artists. Potter uses traditional darkroom techniques to generate startling, often erotic, mind-bending, sensual images with both dramatic shock value and a dark sense of foreboding. His art has illustrated works by J.G. Ballard, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Poppy Z. Brite, Lucius Shepard, Ramsey Campbell, Clive Barker, William Gibson, William Burroughs and others. Poppy Z. Brite and Lydia Lunch are among his most frequent models. All of the photographs in this collection are from an unpublished book on his work. Most are 11" x 14", and most are signed by Potter. Together with an autograph letter signed by Potter to the would-be editor of the book, Stanley Wiater. Two pages, in which Potter weighs in on the idea of a dark fantasy children's book and works out the medium for an interview with Wiater. A fine collection from a work that was scuttled by the publisher and will never see light of day. Unique.

[Missoula: McMillan], 1990. - Artwork for first U.S. edition measures 13-1/8" x 20-1/4." The artwork is done by Joe Servello and signed by him in the lower right hand corner. The work is fine and suitable to be matted and framed. This is the story about the impact of a three years' drought on the gigantic Atlas sheep station. The hero is Feng Ching-wei, a diligent station manager of Chinese descent, who looks after the interests of his lifelong friend Frank Mayne. Mayne's intelligence and leadership qualities, sorely needed during the drought, are nullified by his preoccupation with the emotional complications of his loveless marriage. Because of Feng's strength of character and discretion, Atlas is saved from financial ruin, and Frank Mayne gets a new lease on life. An excellent story!! [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Amsterdam, Netherlands: Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990 - 1st Printing. Signed. 1 pages. Published in 1990. Rare Silver-Gelatin Vintage Print of the classic Willem Diepraam photograph. Limited Edition of 15 signed, titled, and dated copies. Print size is 11 X 20 inches. It is elegantly framed in white matte stock paper and contrastingly rich dark wood frame. Full frame size is 29 X 23 inches. The back is mounted in Plexiglas in order to show the signature. The photograph is of a young boy being chased by a pack of wild dogs. The craggy, dotted landscape is streaked with long, undulating gray lines, as if by design, giving the image a powerful, abstract character. It looms over the tiny subjects and appears to envelop them, the Universal and the Particular merging as One. The photograph is named after the place where the incident actually took place, was witnessed, and captured permanently on film by Willem Diepraam (he will not reveal if the dogs caught up with the boy and killed him). As one has come to expect of a photographer who is both a moralist and a formalist, the image is an aesthetic triumph as well as a genuine evocation of unmitigated horror. One of his iconic images, it is beautifully reproduced as a doublespread in the monograph, "Willem Diepraam" (2001). Willem Diepraam is a Dutch photojournalist who has published several books in Europe, none of which is available here. Knowledge of his brilliant work is long overdue in the United States. An absolute "must-have" print for Willem Diepraam collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed, titled, and dated in black ink-pen on verso (visible through the Plexiglas mounting on the back) by the photographer: "Willem Diepraam LOMO DE CORVINA, PANAMERICA SUR, LIMA, PERU, 1990" . This vintage print is a photography classic. All copies of the Limited Edition are now in private hands or public collections. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is elegantly framed, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. It was obtained from Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago, the photographer's American gallery, and a Certificate of Provenance from us comes with the print. A rare signed print thus. One of the greatest living photographers. A flawless collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLEM DIEPRAAM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
