Stand, The: The Complete and Uncut Edition

New York: Doubleday, 1990. Book. Illus. by Bernie Wrightson. Fine. Full-Leather. Signed By Author and Illustrator. 1st Edition. First edition thus, FORGED LETTERED STATE. Signed by King and Bernie Wrightson, the book's illustrator. This book was originally limited to 52 LETTERED copies and 1,250 NUMBERED copies. With about 20 out-of-series (unlettered and unnumbered) copies produced to provide back-up in case of damage to in-series copies. This copy was one of the rare (20 or less) out-of-series back-up copies to which someone added the letters "AP" to the limitation page, in an attempt to make this copy look like one of the 52 "LETTERED" copies. The forger did not know that the lettered copies had been marked "A" to "Z" and "AA" to "ZZ". No "AP" copy was ever produced. What we have here is an authentic limited edition, with authentic autographs, but which is a FORGED "LETTERED" state (or an authentic but altered rare out-of-series copy). Bound in full leather, all edges gilt, and housed in a red cloth-lined wooden box with lid. The plate on the lid is in the "black with brass lettering" state. Fine in original glassine dust jacket and fine publisher's box..

Leitsymptome unserer Materia Medica 10 Bände [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Constantine Hering (Autor), Constantin Hering (Autor), O Eichelberger (Vorwort), Renée von Schlick (Bearbeitung, Herausgeber, Ãœbersetzer)

Schlick, Renée von, 1990. Auflage: 1991-1998 (1990). Hardcover. Good. On page 6, an arrow by Hasford points to the paragraph in which "the Phantom Blooper has wasted Lieutenant Kent Anderson..." A surprisingly uncommon book for a sequel to what Newsweek had called "the best novel of the Vietnam war," but Hasford had by then fallen out with the people with whom he won an Academy Award for Full Metal Jacket, and he had served time in jail for his book thefts. He wrote, at one point, that this book was "born dead" because his editor had "gone insane" but it's easy to imagine that by this time Hasford was an erratic and unreliable character, from the publisher's point of view, and the publisher cut back on the book's print run to minimize its losses. It is especially scarce signed, and probably the only signed copies are, like this one, association copies. Fine in a fine dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Middle Passage

New York: Atheneum. 1990. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Warmly Inscribed by Johnson to a fellow author, and former colleague at Bennington: "For Nick Delbanco, with profound admiration & lifelong friendship. Charles Johnson. 1/28/92." Laid in is an Autograph Postcard Signed from Johnson to Delbanco, as well as Delbanco's printed introductory notes to a reading by Johnson. An exceptional novel, a tour de force about a freed slave who, to his horror, stows away on a slave ship headed for Africa. National Book Award winner. A wonderful association copy. .

WALLS: A JOURNEY ACROSS THREE CONTINENTS

Santa Cruz: The Quail Press, 1990. First Edition. hardcover. Fine in a Fine slipcase. A beautiful and ambitious book. Tom Killion. Folio (10-1/4" x 13") bound in half russet morocco and linen sides and printed on hand-made Japanese Torinoko paper. [v], 103 pages. Nine years in the making, this beautiful travel diary (North America, Europe, and Africa) was written and illustrated by Killion with relief engravings, linocuts, monochrome woodcuts, and 21 multi-colored woodcuts. On the colophon page the artist/author describes the process of making this book: "WALLS is the product of a long gestation—even for a book. I originally intended only to reproduce an illustrated travel diary from a journey I made in 1976-1977. I began carving the blocks for WALLS in 1981 and, in a burst of impetuosity, I printed a dated title page in 1983. The book fell victim to more pressing demands, however, which included further travels in Africa--and as I traveled WALLS continued to grow. I finally designed the present book in 1988, but in the meantime I had printed many of the multi-colored woodcuts. WALLS was completed in January 1990 at the Quail Press in Santa Cruz. Every book required one hundred and ninety-nine pulls on my Asbern proof press." Of a total edition of only 131 copies, this is #63 of 100 numbered copies. Tom Killion founded the Quail Press in Santa Cruz in 1977. His multi-colored woodblock printing shows the influence of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
