Schweizer Berglandschaft mit wanderndem Paar und zwei Ziegen.

      - Aquarell und Feder in Grau, auf Bütten mit Wasserzeichen: C & I Honig (vgl. W.A. Churchill, Watermarks in Paper. Nieuwekoop de Graaf Publishers, 1990 (Reprint), Nr. 99), links unten signiert und datiert "(D)uncker del: 1775". 27,8:21,8 cm. - Löchlein innerhalb der Darstellung restauriert, rechte untere Ecke ergänzt. Provenienz: Hess. Privatbesitz. Bern, Kunstmuseum, 1990/91.

THE BIRDS OF GREAT BRITAIN Vol. I [Birds of Prey]

Melbourne: Hill House. Very Good. 1990. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Elephant Folio 0947352090 Limited facsimile edition (this copy is stamped no. 193 to the front end paper). Original maroon Japanese Saifu cloth, gilt; pp. cxl, [2]; 37 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. Endpapers with a repeating pattern of BM library stamps. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Binding very good with a little general wear, very slightly marked; minimal fading to the spine, contents clean and tight, unmarked. A very good copy. Publisher's blurb: "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board.... Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." Please see the other Gould titles we are offering in this impressive edition. This book is held in stock. .

        Photographs

[Altadena]: Twelvetrees Press, 1990. Pages noted in pencil (likely in Crawford's hand), bottom corner bumped; near fine in a near fine jacket, with the original publisher's obi.. First Edition. Folio. This copy INSCRIBED by Ginsberg on a two-page title spread to his photography assistant, Althea Crawford: "Allen Ginsberg 5/15/94 / for Althea Crawford." Accompanying this inscription Ginsberg has added an elaborate drawing in several parts: a large seated frowning Buddha figure, surrounded by auras; a signature "AH" insignia, encircled and within a burst; an Islamic Crescent with a Star of David; numerous five-pointed stars and Stars of David; and a skull with a flower extending from its mouth. Volume includes 91 Ginsberg photographs with his captions, including all the famous images of the Beats (Roth 266-267). While not uncommon with drawings, this is one of the better examples I have seen, especially in recent memory.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

[Zürich], 10. VIII. 1990. - 1 S. Gr.-8vo.

In over 140 handwritten words, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis writes notes to her horse trainer about her beloved animals - "Will he be able to go to Va. to hunt once a week ? "I imagine he'd be friskier once he felt better ?"

Chilmark, Massachusetts, [August 14, 1990]. 15.5" x 8". "Autograph Letter unsigned, 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"". Chilmark, Massachusetts, [August 14, 1990]. Matted and elegantly framed under glass to 15.5"" x 18"". To Scott, with original 6"" x 4"" envelope addressed by Mrs. Onassis to ""Scott Milne / Box 158 / Peapack, NJ 07977."" 25¢ stamp postmarked Buzzards Bay, MA, August 14, 1990. Return flap is engraved ""Chilmark / Massachusetts 02535."" Chilmark is a town on the island of Martha's Vineyard. On this page, horse trainer Scott Milne writes about three of Mrs. Onassis' horses: Frank, Toby, and Midnight. Mostly in the wide blank left margin, Mrs. Onassis has penned over 140 words beginning across the top ""Scott - good report - No Road Hacks in our Barn! It makes me laugh a bit at how competitive they all are!"" She continues about Toby: ""Why are Toby's feet so sore? Does he have shoes on? Will he be able to go to Va. to hunt once a week Oct 22 - Nov 20? I have to ask the Mellons if I can bring an extra horse, so let me know if he can or cant."" About Midnight, she pens, in part, ""I imagine he'd be friskier once he felt better - Sounds like hacking is fun!..."" Scott had told her, in part, ""Midnight ... spooks at everything, sticks, rocks all forms of wildlife everything. He is very competative he's more concerned with being first that where he is going ..."" The British Equestrian Federation defines ""Road Hack"" as ""Horses to enter ring at a walk. May be shown at a flat-footed walk with a reasonably loose rein, trot, strong trot, easy canter and hand gallop. Only 8 horses to gallop at one time. To be judged on performance, conformation, substance and manners."" Scott Milne's entire letter with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' entire reply can be read in full in the pictures above."

Freedom in Exile: The Autobiography of the Dalai Lama (SIGNED COPY) with Promo Materials

New York: Corneila & Michael Bessie Books (An Imprint of Harper & Row Publishers), 1990. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. SIGNED BY THE DALAI LAMA on the title page. 256 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Publishers three page press release and a black and white photo of the cover image (taken by Galen Rowell) laid in. Born in 1935 into a poor farming family in the northeastern province of Amdo, the present Dalai Lama was found to be the reincarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama who died in 1933. A series of auguries pointed a government search party to a monastery in Amdo and finally to the eighteen-month old child who identified people and things beloved by the deceased leader. The new Dalai Lama was removed from his family to Kumbum monastery where his lifelong religious studies began. At the age of for, the Dalai Lama traveled to the capital Lhasa, where the spiritual and political leadership of his people was conferred upon him. During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he denounced the People's Republic of China (who by that time had plans to take over the Tibetan Autonomous Region) and established the nongovernmental Central Tibetan Administration (in Dharamsala). He has since traveled the world, advocating for the welfare of Tibetans, teaching Tibetan Buddhism and talking about the importance of compassion as the source of a happy life. Around the world, institutions face pressure from China not to accept him. He has spoken about the environment, economics, womens rights, non-violence, interfaith dialog, physics, astronomy, reproductive health, and sexuality, along with various Mahayana and Vajrayana topics. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
