Photograph of Henry Miller at the 1962 International Writers Conference

[Edinburgh, 1990. Landscape-format monochrome photographic portrait, signed ("Peter Keen") on the lower right margin, dry mounted. 405 x 305 mm. Fine. Candid portrait photograph of Henry Miller in spectacles and flat cap, taken at the 1962 International Writers' Conference held at McEwan Hall, Edinburgh. The conference - which was on the subject of "The Novel Today" - was organized by the publisher John Calder and featured seventy writers from twenty countries. The conference gained some notoriety from the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid, the latter calling the former "cosmopolitan scum." Miller, along with William Burroughs, sided with Trocchi, who replied, "I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy." The photographer, Peter Keen (1928-2009), was commissioned to record the event for THE SUNDAY TIMES. His other notable work includes portraiture - some in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - and the photographic illustrations to Ted Hughes's RIVER (London, 1983).

For the first time in Britain the class barriers were really down; in London, everyone seemed to know everyone. Through his association with Robert Fraser, The Stones and The Beatles, Michael met the artists, writers, poets and musicians of the time and the courtiers around them. He introduced these people to each other. Many of those who brilliantly lit up the decade on both sides of the Atlantic were photographed by him. His most well known photographic assignment was the album cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.?" (Genesis Publications)

Letterhead with a gilt presidential seal at top center above ?Ronald Reagan? engraved in black. Black flap imprinted with the gilt presidential seal, postmarked on verso. Fine condition. Includes retained typescript of Mrs. MacArthur?s January 1, 1990, letter to Dutch on verso of 5? x 7? ?Orthopedic Center? note paper. In part, ?This is the first day of a new year and I am discouraged and concerned. All my thots are on the fact that this is the first year in fifty that I didn?t receive a Christmas greeting from you ... Dear Dutch, I don?t mean to be unreasonable but always hearing from you these many year has meant so much to me. I?m sure you don?t want me to be unhappy. I could?nt resist writing this note ... Please understand...? Mrs. Peter MacArthur was 96-year-old Lydia Hupfer ?Hup? McArthur (1893-1995), widow of the man who had given Reagan his first job after college. Peter MacArthur was the program director at radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, which shared its frequency with WHO Des Moines. In 1932, MacArthur gave 21-year-old recent Eureka College grad Ronald ?Dutch? Reagan a sports announcer?s job at WOC. In 1937, sportscaster Reagan went to the Chicago Cubs spring training camp in southern California to do play-by-play for WHO Des Moines. Impressed by his confidence and good looks, an agent arranged a screen test for the 26-year-old sports announcer at Warner Bros. Reagan signed a seven-year contract and moved to California. But he never forgot Pete and Hup MacArthur whom he affectionately called ?Ma? and ?Pa? (?Maw & Paw,? ?Mom & Pop?). He sent Christmas cards and letters to them on a regular basis from 1938 until 1948 when Pete died, continuing to correspond with Hup until she died in 1995 at 101. In full, ?I?m so sorry you were disappointed by not hearing from us during the Christmas holidays. Nancy and I decided to go back to our private citizen days and not send out Christmas cards since we do keep in touch with most of our friends throughout the year. It?s certainly not because you weren?t in our thoughts, so please don?t feel slighted. Having gone from a staff of 1400 to 14 in the last year, we have had to cut back on a lot of things we would have loved to continue. Again, please be assured that there was no ?Reagan Christmas card? this year. Nancy joins me in sending much affection and warmest wishes for a Happy New Year.?
