San Francisco: Arion Press, 1990. First edition. 44 loose sheets in red silk clamshell box; text bound in stitched paper wrappers in pocket of portfolio. A near fine copy, contents fine but for crease on half-title, in a clamshell box with a soil spot on front cover and faint edge wear to corners; booklet is a fine copy. Folio. Bill Berkson, essay. Illus. with 42 lithographs. No. 36 of 150 copies (of a total edition of 180), signed by Dine. "'Biotherm' is the last long poem of Frank O'Hara, whose accidental death in 1966 at age forty deprived America of one of its most vital and innovative poets. The poet and critic Bill Berkson, to whom the poem is addressed, provided an essay and compiled a glossary to explicate the references in the poem and to recount the circumstances of its writing. The artist Jim Dine knew O'Hara and admired his work. Challenged by O'Hara's brilliant experimentation in 'Biotherm', Dine's prints pay a vibrant homage to the poet and engage themes in the poem. Biotherm, a true livre d'artiste, is the sixth collaboration between Jim Dine and Andrew Hoyem" (Arion Press catalogue).

Survey of the Shores and Islands of the Persian Gulf 1820-1829

Cook. 5 volumes, octavo, comprising one volume of text and 55 folding charts, maps and tables in four book form boxes. Publisher's boards, spines ruled and lettered gilt. Folding map in volume one, with 55 folding maps and charts. In excellent condition. First edition of this important assemblage of texts and charts, reproduced from original material in the India Office Library and Records, London and in the Department of Manuscripts, the British Library. "This is a publication of sea charts, harbour plans, coastal views and topographical descriptions produced during the survey of the shores and islands of the Persian Gulf carried out between 1820 and 1829 by officers of the Bombay Marine on the orders of the Bombay Government. Despite the long time that Europeans had sailed in the Gulf, the 1820s survey was the first systematic examination of its coastal topography" (Introduction). Cook here reproduces seven articles, drawn from Manuscripts and printed sources held in British institutions. The articles are: 1. Draft Chapters for an unpublished Account of the Survey of the Persian Gulf by G. B. Brucks c. 1835 (BL: Add MS 14382]. 2. Plan for conducting the Survey of the South Coast of the Persian Gulf, by Philip Maughan 16 August 1821 [IOR: F/4/676, collection 18677]. 3. Account of Part of the Southern Coast or Arabian Side of the Persian Gulf between Ras Musandam and Dubai, by M. Houghton 1822 [IOR: X/10309]. Facsimile of the Original Manuscript followed by a Transcript. 4. Memoir descriptive of the Navigation of the Gulf of Persia, by G. B. Brucks c. 1830 [From Selections from the Records of the Bombay Government, new series vol. XXIV (Bombay 1856), pp. 531-634]. 5. Sailing Directions for the Gulf, 1836 [From James Horsburgh: India Directory, or Directions for Sailing to and from East Indies (London 1836), Vol. 1 pp. 305-377]. 6. Descriptive Sketch of the Islands and Coast situated at the Entrance of the Persian Gulf, by H. H. Whitelock [From Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, Vol. 8 (1838) pp. 170-188]. 7. An Account of the Arabs who inhabit the Coast between Ras-el Kheimah and Abothubee in the Gulf of Persia, generally called the Pirate Coast, by H. H. Whitelock [From Transactions of the Bombay Geographical Society, vol. 1 (1836-1838) pp. 32-54].

Poems of W. B. Yeats. Selected and Introduced by Helen Vendler & with Six Etchings by Richard Diebenkorn

4to. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1990. 4to, xxv, 171, (1, colophon)pp. With six full-page etchings. Original quarter red morocco & dark green cloth, matching cloth & board slipcase. As new. Limited to 400 numbered copies signed by Diebenkorn, this copy complete with the prospectus and the extra pamphlet by Vendler ?Yeats?s Paradises?. A beautifully designed and printed version of Yeats, perhaps the best of all and certainly the finest illustrated edition, with haunting etchings by the world-famous artist Diebenkorn. ?In one of his last ambitious print series, done in 1990, he represented variations on the theme of a coat on a hanger. The late etchings, meant to illustrate a luxury edition book of poems by W.B. Yeats published by San Francisco's Arion Press, constitute a kind of valedictory gesture.? (Diebenkorn Foundation). One of the scarcest of the Arion Press books, and surely one of the best.

Photograph of Henry Miller at the 1962 International Writers Conference

[Edinburgh, 1990. Landscape-format monochrome photographic portrait, signed ("Peter Keen") on the lower right margin, dry mounted. 405 x 305 mm. Fine. Candid portrait photograph of Henry Miller in spectacles and flat cap, taken at the 1962 International Writers' Conference held at McEwan Hall, Edinburgh. The conference - which was on the subject of "The Novel Today" - was organized by the publisher John Calder and featured seventy writers from twenty countries. The conference gained some notoriety from the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid, the latter calling the former "cosmopolitan scum." Miller, along with William Burroughs, sided with Trocchi, who replied, "I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy." The photographer, Peter Keen (1928-2009), was commissioned to record the event for THE SUNDAY TIMES. His other notable work includes portraiture - some in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - and the photographic illustrations to Ted Hughes's RIVER (London, 1983).
